Bought a Nokia 3100 Hand Phone with Maxis 012 line for wife. Could not send SMS.. Follow the "MESSAGE" instruction word for word and try "SEND", but get a promt that reads "Number Not In Use".

Do I need to go to Maxis to register for the SMS service?

Or it is just that I need to set the hand phone right?

Please help.

maybe you got the prefix wrong?

best to just call maxis.

SMS is standard, you don't need to apply.

EJ.,

I know I can count on your help. Thanks.

Are you referring to the telephone number prefix? Say I want to send to a maxis 012 number, and my phone is also a 012, do I need to put the 012 prefix?

Happy New Year to you and bf. !

You must be new to handphones -
For ALL handphone calls, you need to use the prefix eg 012, 019, 03. Yes, even for standard phone numbers, regardless where you may be (even in the same building).

The reason for this is simple, you are "mobile" hence the handphone need to identify the destination or service it is calling to.

i would like to add on..

if you're using 012 and the number u wanna call is also 012, you don't need to put the 012 prefix.

however, for sending SMS, u need to put in the prefix, even though it's sending from 012 to 012.

I suspect the problem is because the phone's messaging centre number is not set up properly. This is normally setup in the phone first time by the vendor. For MAXIS, their SMS messaging centre number is +60120000015. You should set up your phone to send and receive your SMS through this same centre number.
