A week ago, Romi asked me to start a thread on books. Won't it be good if we can share our views on books we have read? Or even if we are not that good at writing reviews, we can still obtain reviews from other sources and merge them with our own thoughts? This thread would also 'prevent' us from crouching into the thread on Chin Peng as already there were snippets on Tanamera etc inside there already!
Let's start. Anybody read Boris Pasternak's Dr Zhivago? It was made into a great movie starring Omar Sharif and Julie Christie in 1965. The movie also gave us 'Lara's Theme' - a haunting piece of music which is still be played all over the world in jazz bars. The DVD is still been sold around town. This was one of the rare occasions where the movie was better than the book; mainly because of the powerful imagery of flowers, wolves and snow. Directed by David Lean. However, to me, it has always got to be the book. I studied Pasternak when I was a student way back many many many moons ago.
Film Review: Doctor Zhivago, based on the Nobel prize-winning novel by Boris Pasternak, is set against the backdrop of the Russian Revolution and stars Omar Sharif and Julie Christie as two idealistic lovers who are alternately separated and brought together by fate and war. The whole story is framed as a flashback, as an aging Alec Guinness interrogates a young woman from a work gang. He's hoping to solve an old family mystery..what happened to his niece after the death of his brother, the doctor-poet for whom the movie is named? The movie is a visual marvel, with some breathtaking cinematography which includes some of the most stunning vistas ever captured on film. David Lean (Lawrence of Arabia, The Bridge over the River Kwai) was a master of creating large scale epic dramas that never lose their focus on characters. Dr. Zhivago is a film about regrets, missed opportunities, tragedy and love. It's one of the all-time greats. -Review by Aaron Caldwell
