View Full Version : SUGGESTION: Member Intro ?
I've been hanging out in this forum for few months, seen some cool people with cool posts and comments (of course, there are some very "sakar-stick" :p or unique people around here). Therefore, I suggest site creates a separate forum called "Member Introduction", allowing new or active members to introduce themselves. Of course, we don't need to review our DOB, how many wifes we have, how much we make, etc, but maybe a brief intro on ur background, the reasons we are hanging out here, etc. I guess when we know each other better, get more aquaincted with one another, that will help create a more fun community site. Yeah, we might enjoy reading those complaints and trashing of crazy things/people/events, i think we need more fun...friendlier atmosphere! ;)
Just a suggestion...:D

Jeff & Co - What are your views about having a web-based chat so that if we happen to meet online, we can talk to each other? Thanks.

Or chat like as though it is ICQ but via the forum. Well, I don't own this place.

I think that a chat-based forum will definitely draw traffic. Getting replies instantly and a constant flow of discussion will make it a lot more exciting. Jeff's wife will not be happy if he spends any more time online than he already does.. hehehhehe

we can always experiement with it.
Just that, this forum engine may not be able to support an IRC-type of chat that cluster all chatters in one panel.
Let's see if El Ho has time to explore on this. We need to find something that syncs well with our Open Source config because nothing that we use at the back-end is Microsoft.
We also need the class monitor as, Debbie is right, my wife will strangle me if I spent too long on the chat room.

RE my previous posts....
I brought up the issue of using "real" names at our e_community,
to be more informal..nn such....
A lot of people were against it..Therefore, it wud be quite difficult
to interact wz the other in our Forum if we are still using "handles". Say we decide to meet at WengSoonJaya..
I have to go forward and ask..are u "sky"..if the real sky is the one, no prob..but imagine another person..he will say...
"no..I do not belong to the "sky", i live on the ground!

Satish - I disagree :D Handles are interesting. Apart from Jeff and a few others who use their real names or a combination of their surnames and initials, the rest prefer to live in mystery. It is a lot more fun chatting to Angelina Jolie or Brad Piit or Idiot Luke than Wong Siew Siew or Siew Siew Wong. Let's give the chat some thought. We can all chip in to help if it is needed. Anyway, you do not want to know my real name. It is Harry Potter.

Good for you. You obviously have less skeletons in the cupboards than I have. I cannot afford to have 15 loan shark agencies, 4 banks, 56 friends whom I owed money to and my long lost uncle to know where I am!

good one, luke :D
yeah, won't it be nice to have jackie chan, bruce lee, other than Ah Kau (not offending, i hope):)
just make sure they have valid name n address when register....
I don't think chat room is a good idea, unless u have a moderator moderating the chat room. Bcos you don't want to repeat what FM988 is doing http://www.usj.com.my/bulletin/upload/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3709
I was just suggesting a place where members can intro themselves (if they choose to), tell us about yourself. How much u want to review urself is entirely up to u! That way, we can get acquianted with one another (for those who want to be acquainted! )
Just start a forum in this community called "Member Intro", that will do the work. Don't waste time integrating a chat room into this site, bcos this is not a common practice anymore, especially now we have all kinds of Instant Messaging services like MSN, Yahoo.....which are much much cool and fun!

My idea on a chat forum is so that it can be answered whenever someone gets online. This is so that people can come at their most convienient time to chat albeit the response is not instant. I agree MSN, AOL, YM, etc. are good for instant chat and we do not need to re-invent the wheel. As for revealing our real names, I am Snoopy a.k.a. JoeCool.
I am Smart Ass a.k.a SKY! :D

In a way, what I am suggesting is already what is happening here. Quite a fair bit of chatting in the forums here going on anyway.

A chat room or forum is good because people are usually not that comfortable in the beginning to get into a person-to-person MSN, Yahoo and ICQ. A common chat room would be good for a group of people meeting online to throw ideas around and become friends. I don't know - maybe I am getting old and out of touch (at least that was what my daughters said), I feel that MSN etc is 'personal', in that I know the person really well already. But then I may be wrong and need re-education in that!
Cool Hand Luke, yeah...u r really getting "old"!!! :D (just kidding!)
Nowadays, strangers chat to each others using different IM (Instant Messaging) services. Besides their cool built-in features like voice chat, video conferencing, online games, application sharing, etc, people use these IM bcos they have a common interest or topic! Yeah, the bottom line is "same interest, same topic, same click!" I use IM to discuss computer/programming stuff with different people from around the world, I use IM to discuss Msia stuff with Msians from around the world, ....etc ( I think I am abit off topic here...:p )
Anyway...up for the admin to decide!
But I would like to first get to know those people here with a "COOL" as their surname or firstname! Like "Cool Hand Luke" and "JoeCool", their names sound COOL, and I think they are COOL too! :D

Hey, people, I was busy and missed this whole thread of discussion. Mind if I say something?....
Sky is suggesting
a separate forum called "Member Introduction", allowing new or active members to introduce themselves
I think that is a good idea... however, just like handles, anyone could make up any profile and it is still up to the others to decide if it is true. For example, I could tell you I'm actually from HongKong (I really hate people calling us "hongkees"), having gotten my PR since the Govt required some expertise on computers which I acquired since Steve Jobs cranked out his inedible apples. So I'm in my early 40's and am running a web-publishing house and training centre for budding web-designers. For my pasttime I build tiny computers, not very different from the PDAs that you see nowadays. They are pretty crude, and resemble calculators with a simple LCD screen....
So, what's your profile?
kwchang,
Sorry, I didn't get it! Was that ur real profile you tried to share with us, or it was just an EXAMPLE??? And are you going to create a forum for MEMBER INTRO?
And u better visit and participate more (though u r busy) !!!!!! Else, u will miss lots of fun here! :D

Kwchang - You see, there is so much doubts in cyberspace Sky is not even sure whether you are kidding or not :D
My profile: Real handsome devil. Looks like Brad Pitt but only better looking. Will appear with Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider 3. I would be playing the hero whom she falls madly in love with. I have three Ferraris and one Jag. Occasionally I fly my own helicopter. I only eat in expensive restaurants - my favourite food is air-flown whole lobster from NewFoundland and I drink Chivas. My last holiday was with Fann Wong. We went skiing in the Swiss Alps. Actually, she didn't think much of Jacky Chan, her co-star in 'Shanghai Knights'. She said she preferred me. Man, oh man.
Mmm... interesting.
Or shall it be:
I am a middle-age man. Ordinary. Have to work in the gym like mad not to put on weight. Losing my hair. I have a old Proton Tiara (awful green colour). I usually buy my nasi lemak biasa in USJ 2 (you ask the fat lady la, she knows me). My last holiday was two years ago in Melaka. I stayed in a budget hotel above a cendol stall. Every day I sit in my old armchair and look out of my small window at my small patch of council land to make sure that the colonial gentleman does not let his doggie fertilise my plants. Fann Wong? In your wildest dreams, mate.

After reading Chang's 'profile' i wondered too if it was for real. Cool Hand Luke's multiple profiles were really interesting too. But as anyone who's cautious on the net, we can never really be sure can we, as to how much truth is provided.
So, how about the member intro be done at some nice relaxed location, maybe on some special day like the anniversary of USJ.com.my's floating in cyberspace? Everyone who contributes to the forum can attend and introduce themselves face to face. Or does that seem too 'open'? Would everyone just prefer to hide behind this mysterious veil of handles/usernames?

For a start maybe member who which to let others to know them better can update their profile in www.usj.com.my
Sky,
my new handle is now called JerichoKewl :D

Hmm. Here's a go at my profile.
Male. Middle aged. Used to enjoy life to the maximum but nowadays holding back to ensure daughters gets proper attention. Likes driving fast but have not received a single speeding ticket yet (touch wood!). Enjoy food all type and all the time.
Could be anyone?
Cool Hand Luke

It is still back to 'it could be anyone' type of profile. I think it is difficult to get people to reveal more than necessary in a public forum as such. The only route, perhaps, is for the individual member to contact those whom they want to communicate with to start a online friendship. But again, all the online chats and profession of undying love :D would still go back to the basic - whether they are willing to tell the truth in the first place!
Me? I always tell the truth. Wait for Tomb Raider 3 and you will see what I mean. I am the real handsome devil standing next to Angelina Jolie, in the first 3 minutes of the movie, peering at the plot of council land to investigate whether the colonial gentleman has been trying to sabotage our plan of saving the universe.
Really funny!!! I saw so many Msians' portals or sites required people to provide their IC numbers, address, some important personal info during member registrations, no privacy was repected and honored! And the personal info requested were totally unrelated to the site! Yet people were willing to give out those important info without second thought...never thought of privacy, frault, impersonation, etc. But now, when it comes self introducing, people were so reluctant to give out any brief REAL intro....! :D
Come on.....start introducing urself! We don't need details but some real brief profile! :p
p/s: does this has to do with old school thinking Vs new school thinking? Hmmm..I have few friends who married their husband/wife whom they met over the Internet....and I also have some real good friends whom I met over the Internet!!! So...people whom we met over the Internet can be REAL BUDDIES too...!!! :D :p
Mr. Luke...continue to dream on! :D

Firstly, let me clear it, I got nothing to do with Isreal or Palestine.
And NO, even if you performed the ritual of walking/dancing around me for 7 days or 7 times (as if I have the time for you to do the ritual :D ) , I still won't collapse in front of you.
My profile - Go read Federick Forsyth's The Fist of God to find out :p
=========================================
Jericho's Wall
Moses lead the Israelites from slavery in Egypt to God's promised land, but when they got there, there were scary people who looked like giants. The Israelites got scared and ran away. God was so disappointed in them that he made them stay in the desert for forty years. After that time had passed, Moses had died and Josh became the leader. Josh was leading his people to the promised land but there was one little thing that he overlooked... Jericho's giant walled city. The guards insist that Josh and his people must go away. Josh stands his ground telling them that God had given the land the Israelites and that they would have to leave. Since the Israelites don't have anything to knock down the wall with, the people of Israel decide to leave for now and think over their strategy.
Josh decides to talk to God. He left the camp by himself and after he had walked for a while, a messenger from god came to Josh and told him that to knock down the wall, him and the Israelites would have to walk around the wall for 7 days. On the seventh day, the priests should play trumpets made from ram's horn and everyone should walk around the wall seven times. The priests will sound one long blast on their horn, the Israelites will yell and the walls will collapse. Josh goes back to camp and tells the Israelites the plan. They are skeptical but Josh points out that God always knows what he's doing and that they'll just have to trust him. They follow the directions and the walls of Jericho fall down leaving the Israelites free to move into the promised land.

Jolly good show. Now we are into psychoanalysis and it is cool. Forget about what is 'real' - name, occupation/prison term (same thing), hobbies etc but go deeper to analyse a person's name. When we use a particular name, something deep inside us may have urged us to use that particular name and very often it reflects what we really are or want to be :p Jericho's walls, huh? Vivid imagery.
Now as for Cool Hand Luke. It was arrived at from a cross fertilisation of intense emotions. I heard a song by Nick Cave called 'Red Right Hand' and I like it. The very spooky lyrics went like this - and hence the 'hand' in my name:
Take a litle walk to the edge of town
Go across the tracks
Where the viaduct looms,
like a bird of doom
As it shifts and cracks
Where secrets lie in the border fires,
in the humming wires
Hey man, you know
you're never coming back
Past the square, past the bridge,
past the mills, past the stacks
On a gathering storm comes
a tall handsome man
In a dusty black coat with
a red right hand
He'll wrap you in his arms,
tell you that you've been a good boy
He'll rekindle all the dreams
it took you a lifetime to destroy
He'll reach deep into the hole,
heal your shrinking soul
Hey buddy, you know you're
never ever coming back
He's a god, he's a man,
he's a ghost, he's a guru
They're whispering his name
through this disappearing land
But hidden in his coat
is a red right hand
You ain't got no money?
He'll get you some
You ain't got no car? He'll get you one
You ain't got no self-respect,
you feel like an insect
Well don't you worry buddy,
cause here he comes
Through the ghettos and the barrio
and the bowery and the slum
A shadow is cast wherever he stands
Stacks of green paper in his
red right hand
You'll see him in your nightmares,
you'll see him in your dreams
He'll appear out of nowhere but
he ain't what he seems
You'll see him in your head,
on the TV screen
And hey buddy, I'm warning
you to turn it off
He's a ghost, he's a god,
he's a man, he's a guru
You're one microscopic cog
in his catastrophic plan
Designed and directed by
his red right hand
And before that when I was - many moons ago - in university, I loved Alice Cooper and the word 'cool' was taken from his song, 'Cold Ethyl' and the haunting lyrics went - and hence the word 'cool' in my name:
One thing I miss is Cold Ethyl and her skeleton kiss
We met last night making love by the refrigerator light
Ethyl Ethyl let me squeeze you in my arms
Ethyl Ethyl come and freeze me with your charms
One thing
No lie
Ethyl's frigid as an eskimo pie
She's cool in bed
Well she oughta be 'cuz Ethyl's dead
Ethyl Ethyl let me squeeze you in my arms
Ethyl Ethyl come and freeze me with your charms
Come on Cold Ethyl
Freeze me babe
One thing - it's true
Cold Ethyl I am stuck on you
And everything is my way
Ethyl don't have much to say
Ethyl Ethyl let me squeeze you in my arms
Ethyl Ethyl come and freeze me with your charms
Come here Cold Ethyl
What makes you so cold? Ooh so cold
Cold Ethyl
Cold Cold Ethyl
If I live 'til ninety-seven
You'll still be waiting in refrigerator heaven
'cuz you're cool
You're ice
Cold Ethyl
You're my paradise
Forget about the 'Luke'. Nothing dramatic. I mean, I can't hardly call myself Cool Hand Wong Ah Chong, can't I? It just doesn't jive!

Sigh. My nick only came about from my love of the Charlie Brown comic strip. Story about a boy and his love for his dog called snoopy. Snoopy is one great character. And obviously highly commercialized but still highly lovable. One of Snoopy's alter-ego is Joecool. Yeah. That's me. Lead a dog's life but with high hopes of being a fighter pilot against the cursed red baron. Toasting to the sweet french girls in a tavern in french. Bon Jour!
