I usually go to Summit or the IT center at Pyramid. No particular shop though. They kept closing and opening again with different names. :(

AFAIK, Laptop repair have its limitations by 3rd party computer shop. Its not as universal parts like desktop PC. Only HDD, and ram modules are easily available plug on replacements.
Screen defect and motherboard defect are probably the worst nightmare for any laptop owner, which only 2 choice, go back to authorised service center or buy a new laptop. I've been there, done that...I used to be in the PC business.
Coincidently I just finished "repairing" a i5 Sony Vaio laptop which went blank after boot. Pre diagnosis is HDD probably kaput. After diagnosis HDD certified OK and Windows 7 cannot boot, save all the data, reinstall back to factory condition, Voila!.. 1 bloody WHOLE DAY WORK!..
How much I earn?... say 100 bucks oso people may mumble grumble..thats why I don't want to do this kind of work.

What do you think, bslee?

Eventually the lap top market will die off, right? Tablets are so much more versatile and just as useful. If you need anything heavy duty, the desktop is still far better than the laptop.

Nope, the laptop will not die off, it'll be around for many more years or decades, as the tablet or anything slimmer may not replace a Windows or Mac based PC with full functionality that a desktop can do. The only obvious issue with a desktop PC is size and mobility that a notebook can offer. Electronics are very delicate items, which many factors have to be taken into most serious consideration in the design. It have to be slimmest, lightest, most durable and reliable under most working conditions. This isn't easy to achieve. We all take things for granted that its probably so easy to produce or design a new model with more appeal and eventual best seller. Look at those very slim notebooks..nice look, very chic, BUT..it have inherent ventilation issues and run hot. HEAT is the worst nightmare for electronics. Did you know that your Intel CPU emit consume about 75 Watts (approx) of power and give out heat around the same incandescent bulb?. just that it have a heat sink to cool it off and allow it to operate normally. So when a notebook gets slimmer, there's going to be compromise in certain areas. Its not about electronics going micro or nano. Not quite yet in everything.
Lastly, NO LAPTOP, NOTEBOOK, TABLET or desktop PC IS BULLETPROOF!.. they're all with the same delicate electronics that are sensitive to heat, moisture and electrical issues. You can only hope it will last for miles to what you paid for.
Simple analogy...is today's car perfect and immune to breakdown despite space age technology and rocket science?..certainly not! Maybe you should peek at some authorised service centers for notebooks.. you'd see stacks of them for repair. Any brand the same scenario...bulletproof or not! :grin2:

Buddy... question: NO "graphics" display or the lappy does not start up at all?...

check and see if the HDD is running.. the Dell has a LED indicator that blinks intermittently (as when the registry loading and eventual startup) when you switch it on.... and then if the screen is still blank - chances are the graphics ribbon-cable (behind the screen/lid) has come loose...

Pray it is the ribbon that is loose instead of the GPU that is fried ( if fried, you can literally throw away the motherboard as it is an intergrated GPU chip on the whole motherboard, .... PM me if you're not sure... I can drop by to look/see for you...

Oh ya... another thing... how old is your lappy??. in 2008-10, Dell was using a bunch of faulty Nvidia GPU chipsets which they had recalled... most apparently got fried after a while like on my XPS.... I called Dell ~ sent them an email and they replaced the whole motherboard since they could not replace the faulty chip... :)
