My daughter has set her goal on a scholarship since form one, she said she wanted to do a degree on her own effort. She doesn't want to use our money.

Lately, she asked about applying for JPA.

I recalled when I went for registration at a local U for my degree, I have only about RM800 of saving. My dad didn't agree to me doing a degree; I just went ahead despite his objection and not knowing where to get more money. Later I found out many of my campus mates were from poor family, mostly farmer’s children. There was one guy, his father was a trishaw paddler, another guy from single parent family, the mom does odd jobs,…. Many of them earn money by joining reserved army in Uni. Most of us, eventually got a scholarship, or a loan or grant to carry on.

Fortunately, most of my friends now don’t need a scholarship to support their children’s study. A few of them have children accepted by world top 5 universities (2013/14 ranking). Non of them apply for scholarship.

However, I knew of at least 2 parents who allow their children to apply for JPA, got it and dump it because they didn’t get their preferred Universities/course. Would you do the same –apply for the JPA scholarship knowing that you might end up giving up that chance because you could afford something better?

No harm applying. Final choice is still yours. But if you did not apply, you have effectively closed one door of opportunity.

Well, I hope others don't share the same thought..

If you
1) can afford the cost of tertiary education for your children
2) don’t want your children to spend their best 5-7 years after graduation in the public sector
3) are confident your children have what it takes to make it into good overseas university by themselves

Please do not apply the JPA scholarships.

Let those who really need the scholarship to apply. There are many who have no other alternatives apart from scholarship to further their education.

I wouldn't simply because I have no faith with the selection criterion.. and I have no confidence of the future of this country for the younger generation.

The financial strain to parents (if any) and the challenges to the children for the 3-4 years in university WITHOUT gomen scholarship is worthy if you look at the long run… :)

JPA is a need based financial assistance. inequality aside -- Apply if you NEED it. Don't if you WANT it but do not NEED it.

MsJenny, I feel its best you sit down and review everything carefully with total consideration of your own unique circumstances and do whats best you feel is right. All you find here is mixed opinions, based of their own experience, thoughts and perception of the whole idea. Obviously no-one is responsible for any outcome following anyone's advice or suggestion or bias on the matter. For better or worse its ultimately your decision after due consultation with whoever involved directly in this. The decision is entirely yours to make...I hope for the best for you all. Every sane parent wants the best for their kids and shape their future. A lot of things are a gamble these days, not knowing what the outcome or future may be. We do what we can and able to.

i'd get my kid to apply for a scholarship BUT only from a prestigious outfit/org/mnc/Govt (not bolehland) etc...And by 4ll4h, if my kiddo can get it and thus save me RM'000000s in fees etc...then that same amount savings will be the kiddo's graduation gift, to do whatever the kiddo wants...:heheheh:

JPA? unless you cant afford the kid's Univ, leave it be for the needy ones.

Three years at Econs Faculty UM, I gave tuition to secondary students in Sections 11, 13, 14, 16, 17 and 19, SS2, Sea Park and even in United Estates Plantations (UEP) now known as USJ on a Honda C70 and later Honda CB100 and later Suzuki TS185.... richer than the scholarship holders.... berdikari!

Rhiga, Allswell, Tupai. I agreed with you, I told my daughter, very good of you want to be independent, but no, some poor kids need it more than you do.

If you have been there, you know how much the scholarship meant to a poor student. I definitely hope another poor student( like me before) get the chance. Though yes, many of them will find ways to support themselves like SM did.

So its now a problem or issues related to selection procedure or other accused unfair practices in this land? More reason for me to loath and puke at the kind of things happening behind our backs in this land!
But then...obviously, all who've lived through it all, survived it all, now successful due to reasons of more perceived opportunity or less competition in the past can enjoy it all as fortune and fate permit it all. Now not so easy anymore..for all obvious reasons and factors this and future generation have to face or slog it out to be on par with successful people of some past era. God willing...just pray and work extra hard to achieve your ambitions.

We have pressing issues in our backyard that need addressing in the best interest of all here...right here on this land. Housing affordability woes and income disparity for a start. For all those who already not affected by woes, they surely aren't worried much anymore, but a good majority of rakyat are very very concerned as what to do next or how to resolve the woes right here in the face. I wouldn't give a crap about numerous names, slurs or how demonic about that place or its governance. My 1 sen worth.. :)

Errr...your governors leave them in the backyard till dunno when!...can say dunno how to solve them..and you're right..its all in our face like it or not. More and worse may come. Like I sympathise with those also affected suddenly by floods or the recent Bertam Valley incident. COMMON PEOPLE CANNOT AFFORD MATERIAL LOSSES ANYMORE!... loose your belongings and whatever slogged for in this life..loose everything just like that...One may simply ask again if life is with fairness and justice? On another note, I noticed my car insurance now offer "flood" insurance cover..Maybe I should take it. I just cannot afford to buy and replace my old car if lost through some calamity. Hou kor mou!..
All said and done, I really can kneel and thank fate and the Almighty that I've passed the phase of my 2 son's education and graduation..I thank GOD for his grace and kindness I may not have to face current predicaments like other parents in the same vicious cycle.
