This must be the first of many jokes that our newly minted gomen has for the fellas who voted for them. The minister for international trade has declared that prices for cars would be reduced in 5 years time, just in time for the next erection when it would be promised again (and again) that car prices would be reduced if they win the erection. Damn funny la.

I would NOT and NEVER hope too much in this land. My own dirty feelings is the effects will be little or not really felt, if not it'll be negated by other hidden costs or whatever increase that we thought will be paying much less for a car FORGET IT LAH and don't hope too much. They don't exist to give you back a whole lot to the average Joe. Just earn more in future to afford and buy when the time comes. Already lots of imported stuff even if bottled or packed here(not those cheapo MIC stuff) are expensive and at category R.

In five years I will make him Tun.

Actually they can't even if they want to, thanks to their spendthrift ways. Remember 50% of Gomen revenue comes from oil and import duty and excise duty from cars form a big part of the balance 50%. If they collect less here they must make up from somewhere else. GST maybe? So they just buy time by delaying.

If they really wanted to do it they should have started reducing ten years ago by 3% per year. Prices would be 30% lower now. A painless way and it does not cause the market to collapse.

Bear in mind drastic reduction in car will have serious consequences to the used car market...
Used car prices relate directly to new car prices. New car prices go up, used car also will go up and vice versa. So if new car prices go down, used car prices will adjust downward automatically.

Remember the Kia Carnival? When it first went on sale, it was something like RM160k... Then it was revised to RM120k... So those who bought earlier are basically stuck with the car as RM40k paper value vanished overnight. Then when Naza rebadged it as Naza Ria, another RM20k went out the window.

Now imagine across the board all prices come down 20% or 30% overnight. Most car owners servicing their HP loans will be stuck with the car as the outstanding loan will be higher than what the car is worth in the used car market. Those not affected are first time car buyers.

Of course I'm not saying not to reduce car prices but it has to be done in few stages. Otherwise, the auto sales will go from 5th gear down to 2nd gear.

Really? They promised that 5 years ago? Don't remember it :p because it never happened.
*sigh* well, in the states, most teenagers would be able to afford a third hand BMW by the time they're 16. Here, the adults can't even afford a second hand one.

The cumulative inflation 5 years later would be just about to match the so-called reduction in car price. Hence, 5 years is just about the right time to for the price reduction…. ;-)

Well, if you are not happy about the car price in this land, you can always migrate…

Sound familiar…

Yes, we can 'migrate' to either Langkawi or Labuan where cars are tax free. :D

I am not sure about the teen in the states... maybe you are right.

But I have doubt the adult here can't even afford a second hand BMW... Are you speaking of your own/family experience.. ;)

Take a slow drive in an average income neighbourhood like Sj/Usj, you would find not just second hand but plenty of brand new BMW or other sleek continental automobiles around...not to mention other more aflluent neighbourhoods...

So, please don't generalise...

I did not say they promised 5 years ago. Mustapha is promising now (what I can see from his media interview). They are promising now that they would reduce in 5 years time.

Can you all please don’t second-guess the good intention of musstapa… ;-)

He delayed the “reduction” in car price because he cares of this country…

He does not want the auto industry to experience hard-landing and thus cause major layoff and unemployment..

He also cares of people like you and me because if the car price is too cheap, there would be massive traffic congestion on the already congsted road…

All his comments can be found from a Chinaman newspapers today…

Come on !! Car price will be reduced 30% in 5 years time, apa lagi you mahu… !!

Hear-Hear!!....Yeah!....can't wait for the petrol price to go up tooo ;)......too many cars and 'tanks' on the road....taking me hours to get where I need to go and when I reach there....can' find a bl@@^y parking place......Yeah!.....and tell them to double the parking fee too

'Bout time people need to drive out only when the need too .....

Oh Ya, BTW!.......don't forget to increase the gas prices too.......all the makan shops are full to brim during lunch.....no place to sit and eat....and if you go after 2.30pm, most times, have to end up eating Kaya Bread

What ever happened to packing some lunch to work to save time and money??.....I did that often - back then......even when lunch would only cost me 2 bucks, instead of the 7 I need now

Bolehlanders still have lots of spare money I think......time to TAX EM!

Meanwhile, somewhere remote, airport limo services from Penang Airport to Batu Ferringhi was increased very quietly from RM69 to RM74 (add 50% after 12 midnite! = RM111!) This is compared to the fare of RM67 from KLIA to Mid Valley.... ini lah janji ditepati.... whack those fellas who supported Lim Guan Eng kau-kau sampai kaki patah....

Woooo.....hoo....... Yeah, implement GST now.

20% GST rate lagi best. All Malaysians including those whom I have been subsidizing with my tax money will suffer like me. That's the spirit of sharing.

Used car prices relate directly to new car prices. New car prices go up, used car also will go up and vice versa. So if new car prices go down, used car prices will adjust downward automatically.

I remembered selling my old 8 year-old Toyota KE-70 for RM11,000 years ago (in 1991 I think) when I bought it new for RM13,000. During that transition period, it was a sweet deal for me!

:( tell me about this....

Our hardly 3yrs (sep2013) 61,000km baby Mazda 2 Hatchback is only valued at 50k... for a trade in.... a 30k loss/depreciation, no thanks to the news about the pending price reduction.... when, is anyone's guess but already the used car market is slowly feeling the effect...

Trading in my Mazda for a Prius C before the excise duty tax exemption ends (very soon!) .... little bird hinted that they would reinstate the excise duty first - then reduce the tax on the car prices... (perhaps just like how some mega sales promotions are done... ;-) ) and let the suckers think that they got a bargain....

ps:
1. Prius C ~ 30km+ per liter.... 1.5lit FULL HYBRID multi mode cannot go wrong here.... :)
2. Insight ~ 25km+ per liter ....1.3lit IMA - Intergrated Motor Assist... google for more details
3. Mirage ~ 20km+ per liter.... 1.2lit regular engine - not sure how they do it,...

Can't wait....

Anyone looking for a well maintained baby Mazda .... perhaps for wifey or girlfriend or mis******:p going for only 50k... less than 24,000km per year !!! Sakit hati, to see a trader take it and then hike up the price by another 5k +/- .... might as well, let someone get it at a trade in price...

Where got thlee wan egg now ?? I thought cheap cheap entry level is thlee too ooh … :p

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nowadays, regardless of what car (conti, pseudo-conti, nippon, chorea, etc) keep it for more than 10 years…

Pay attention to the car....maximise the coverage during the warranty period… maintain the car to avoid major breakdown.

After 10+ years, no point keeping as more and more irrating problems will surface and wallet will bleed..

After 10+ years, most cars will have about the same depreciation rate (not depreciation value as the purchase price is different). Sell it and it won’t hurt that much in depreciation over the total period.

The depreciation rate per year is about the same after 10+ years, regardless of make.
