View Full Version : SMK USJ 12 - PPSMI story....

My daughter will be going to Form 1 at SMK USJ12...

.... and with all the apprehension and anxiety about the abolishing of PPSMI put aside (soon after the DPM had said PPSMI would continue for those that started in English - will end their subjects in English), it now looks as though we, (the parents of our kids who would be attending Form 1) have just been taken for a DAMN RIDE .... by the PPD, MoE and the DPM

Why - because the school had decided to distribute the books in BM only! When confronted by the parents for answers, they came up with the lamest excuse "that they did not have enough books to cater for the 530+ students coming into Form 1". What they did not mention was, they also had received "arahan dari PPD" to distribute only the BM books.... Only when we confronted them if this was true - they admitted it in front of 15+ parents!!!

Whilst the principle/asst principle and other teachers had said that subject would be taught in English, they would be using the BM books. I find this totally a totally illogical way to teach. How can you teach a subject in English with a BM book. Went home, sat down and realised/found out the meaning of MBMMBI... ( simply put: Putting BM first and supplement the subjects with English ). This is probably exactly what PPD is subtly trying to do, by instructing the schools to distribute the BM books only.

In the first place, while the kids were being registered, the school actually had us believe that they would be giving us the option to choose the MEDIUM of instruction when the registration was divided into CHOICE for English classes and BM Classes. (NO PRIZES to guess which had the LONGER queue).

Being a "CLUSTER" school or "sekolah pintar", I'd expected more of this school but on this very first day, am now utterly disappointed and angry with what is happening....:mad::mad:

Go ahead, my forked tongue Minister... your days are NUMBERED!

Mebbe this is why the MoE left the decisions in the hands of the Principal.... so that the PARENTS will TEMBAK the principals, instead of the MoE or PPD....

Have checked other schools in the vicinity, and guess what - "BUKAN sekolah pintar" but both (SMK USJ4 and SMK USJ13) have both classes in either English or Malay med. The teacher in one school even actually said - "off the record - we prefer to teach and have classes in English but we cannot say... Principle decides"

Oh ya... one more thing: I so liked when what one of the teachers said " kalau tak nak pembelajaran dalam dwi bahasa and buku BM, boleh transfer anak ke sekolah lain, tak ada masaalah.... " You should have seen some of the parents mouth drop... WIDE OPEN! Seriously, I half expected one of the fathers' to go berserk on this teacher, but thankfully he did not....

The teachers are smart enough to teach with dual translations to the oblivious kids who may not understand hati means liver that proses metabolisma dalam manusia , jantung means heart yang beroksijan dalam manusia bukan jatuh cinta or Luv.

Teaching in Dual Language or Pengajaran dalam Dwi Bahasa....
~ why am I getting the feeling that it is a subtle or sneaky way of implementing the MBMMBI format... ???

Oogway

My feelings exactly when they announced the dual language teaching. They said the language chosen for each class will be based on the language that the students will be proficient in! What is the point of this? The kids have been taught in English for the last 6 years and the majority of parents have also made the choice to have the subjects taught in English! Why do they still need to make an assessment? If they want to have the subjects taught in BM, then choose only those kids whose parents have chosen BM as the medium of instruction for the class.

Concerned Parents of Selangor do not understand why in spite of the majority of the parents wanting the teaching and learning of Maths and Science to be in English, the principal of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan USJ 12 has decided to do it in Dwi Bahasa for reasons known to herself. To add salt to our injury, they are only giving the students the BM books although they have the English books in stock. When questioned, the Assistant Principal confessed that the State Education Dept has directed them verbally to give out only the BM version. The parents were also doubtful that the teaching will be conducted in dwi bahasa in the true spirit.

Thus, many parents have approached their ADUN YB Hannah Yeoh to intercede for them. They have also approached us as Concerned Parents of Selangor for help. With that in mind, we have planned to have a gathering of all concerned parents to meet in front of the school this Saturday, 7th January at 10am. We will be distributing the notice calling for the meeting at the school gate at dismissal time tomorrow and again Friday. We were assured of a good turnout as all parents treat education of their children as key for their future development and advancement. We have invited all major Press and NTV7 and Astro Awani news team to cover this event as we hope to draw the attention of our beloved PM to hear our cries.

Time and Date: 10.00am Saturday, 7th January 2012
Place: Outside the school gate of SMK USJ 12

We will be there with banners and placards. Please invite all parents you know to come out in strength.

Thank you

I understand the Ministry of Education will be holding a Press Conference either on Thursday or Friday to address all the issues that have surfaced since the Dep Prime Minister announced the reinstatement of the PPSMI policy. Hopefully it will be good news.

It would be great if PYYeoh can coordinate with the rest of the schools who should be facing the same predicament either by the little Napoleans or maybe discreet direction from the ministry over this forked fiasco. If this happened in the hot area like Subang Jaya schools, it should be happening across the State. Just wondering aloud, why this is not reported by the MSM? As a concerned parent, I fully SOKONG banner and TINDAKBALAS placards ;)

not reported by the MSM? cos it is not a positive news for the ruling fed gomen.

Books were already printed in BM and was sent to schools last year.
and yes, books in English are kept in the store rooms.

High time for many parents to make more effort and invest their time to join/participate in thee school PIGB activities instead of 'boh chap'!
It is the indifferent attitude to allows the existence of 'Napoleon'!

All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing!

Sjk usj17 , form 1 students were given books in BM (new) and English (old ). I think the schools were only provided with BM text books since the direction is to end PPSMI eventually. The English text books r already old, used since the first batch. Anyway, I don't understand how you can have it in dwi bahasa. Same amount of time but teach in 2 languages?

SMK Seafield had been giving out both BM and English textbooks for the older classes so I presume likewise for Form 1 too.
The school too claim to do in dwibahasa, but in practice the maths and science subjects would be taught primarily in English, allowing a bit of BM in the explanation if needed depending on the teachers, especially the younger generation. Likewise, the students are also given the right to answer in BM or BI. In other words, not a strict implementation.

I guess it really depends on the school, the principal and the teachers conducting the lessons.

UPDATES
I have checked with a few parents and they confirmed that their children were given the English textbooks on Wednesday and those who still have not got theirs were told that arrangements have been made for fresh supplies. Lately, bravo to some of the parents who have been putting pressure on the pengetua. If not, the school will buat tak tahu about handing out the English textbooks. Anyway, they have been faithfully following the arahan from the State Education Dept. without given much thought whether they made sense or not.

The gathering will still be held tomorrow to demand that PPSMI be reinstated in full for not only this school but all the schools in the country. In the case of SMK USJ12 where the principal has decided that the teaching and learning of Science and Maths will be in dual languages, the students were told that the lesson will be conducted in English but the Bahasa Malaysia text book will be used as a basis of teaching. This is their defination.

Today being the end of the first week, I spoke to 2 Form 4 students who were taught Sc & Math in English and using the English textbooks while in Form 3 last year. For Form 4 this year, they will still be taught in English but this time they will be using the Bahasa Malaysia textbook. They said that the students are finding it illogical to follow their lessons. What they heard in English is not in sync with their BM textbooks and much time was wasted and confusion arises. And their school bags weigh a ton now. They even said, "Our principal is bodoh punya Pengetua." When I asked them whether they are willing to repeat what they said about their principal regarding her 'bodohness' which is the truth to the Press and NTV7, they replied "No uncle, you want her to give us demerit points and even sack us from the school?"

I know the boys are speaking for the majority and I was only joking with them. I do not wish to drag them into trouble. Afterall, they are the pawns caught in this game between this DPM Muhyddin who also happens to be the half past six Minister of Education and the parents.

You guys should demand for English textbooks for Form 4 and classes must be in English not dwi bahasa. Don't wait till the class started to see what happen. These students don't need BM for these subjects in the future. Their next level will be University or colleges or STPM(if not mistaken, suppose to be in English).

Updates
It looks like some students are Twitting from their classes! Late this afternoon, the Form 1 students were told not only they will be taught in English, the school has decided that they will use the English textbook as their bible. Did I say the correct thing? I don't want Datuk Dr Hasan Ali or Jesus ...... er er I mean JAIS to come after me.

The following is extracted from the SMK USJ12 website

Rasional memilih Dwibahasa:

1. Melaksanakan dasar kerajaan Soft Landing PPSMI serta MBMMBI (Memartabatkan Bahasa Malaysia Memperkukuhkan Bahasa Inggeris).

2. Persetujuan bersama guru-guru di mesyuarat pada 18/11/2011.

If this has been decided, then why the hell want to conduct a survey among the parents their choice of language for the Teaching and Learning of Science and Maths? In the decision on 18/11/2011, were the parents consulted? And having conducted the said survey and the findings showed nearly 90% wanted it to be done in English, then why does the school still insisted in dwi bahasa or dual languages?

Blaming not having enough English textbooks is a damn lame excuse. And teaching and learning of Science and Math is not to improve one's English or downgrade one's Bahasa Malaysia. It is all about the seeking of knowledge and to prepare oneself in the global economy. It is a known fact that when one proceeds one's education to tertiary level, most of the available resources and scientific findings are in English. We don't want our children to look like a blur sotong in the global world.

If the Ministry of Education wants MBMMBI or BAMBI or what not, there are proper route to take. Just don't confuse people with all those jargons or else I would like to tell them to ..........

Fortunate that my children school at SMK Subang Utama have been upholding PPSMI with only English textbooks been given out from day 1. Even heard that new Guru Besar have been driving the teachers to perform, split up the teachers room into several locations so that teachers do not end up congregating in one area and lose visibility of students in other parts of school. School also finally leapfrogged to IT age with blog been updated and student's knowing what their classes are, sport house etc even before classes recommenced. Kudos to the school !

The turn out this morning to support the parents stand on reinstating PPSMI was overwhelming. There were about 200 of them present. For those of you including the school who think this is a illegal gathering, then I am afraid you are wrong. There was a patrol car there with 2 police officers watching and protecting us. A few days ago, the Balai USJ 8 has been duly informed and we have their blessing to have a peaceful assembly. Only the school has no faith in us as they locked up all the gates into the school. One reliable source even told me that the school has warned the teachers that strict disciplinary action will be taken against them should they be found attending this gathering. Even the teachers who are parents and whose children may be studying here have no democratic rights to be concerned parents. The principal can now look forward to a new promotion for so faithfully adhering to the arahan dari atas.

Our ADUN for Subang Jaya YB Hannah Yeoh and MP for Kelana Jaya Loh Gwo Burne were there to support us. Together with the coordinator for Concerned Parents of Selangor, En. Shamsudin Hamid, they were the main speakers to address the charged up crowd which punctuated their speeches with loud applause.

YB Hannah Yeoh was the first to speak was pleased that the principal at least has seen the light and has distributed the English textbooks two days ago which were earlier withheld back. Her only concern now is how is the school going to carry out the dwi bahasa option. She asked, "Is it going to 10% in English 90% Bahasa or what?" She advised the parents to monitor the situation closely.

Shamsudin Hamid, the coordinator for Concerned Parents of Selangor was the next to take over the mike which by now was hot after Hannah's speech. We, the Concerned Parents of Selangor (CPS) are making a stand here that the choice of the language to be used in the Teaching and Learning of Science and Math must be the joint decision of both the parents and the school and NOT leaving it entirely to the school principal alone. He added. "I myself have 4 children, two of them are dong it in English while the other 2 are doing it in Bahasa. This is sheer madness." He then told the crowd, "You are very fortunate to have a hardworking and concerned ADUN like YB Hannah Yeoh and an MP Gwo Burne who listened to you and are here this morning to bring this issue up at this Press conference so that the power that be knows what is happening down here." In other areas in the Klang Valley including Puchong, Kajang and Rawang, the parents there are suffering. As for CPS, I am pleased to announce that there will be a rally at the Taman Timur mini stadium opposite AmCorp Mall on Saturday, 3rd March at 10am. Our application for a permit is being submitted. Be there."

The last speaker was YB Gwo Burne who was very upset by now and he expressed his anger that our Minister of Education is screwing up our education system big time with this nonsensical policy which is so inconsistent. He brought laughter to the crowd when he said a 63 year old taxi driver speaks better English than our 23 year old graduate!! He challenged the Education Minister who unfortunately is also our Deputy Prime Minister (God bless us) to step aside for others who can do a better job than him.Someone in the background even shouted, "Resign resign." Instead of politicising the PPSMI issue, he asked the minister to focus on a solution to solve all these confusion.

On this note, the gathering pun bersurai as we have told the police that this gathering would not be long. NTV7 next had a field day interviewing some of the parents who spoke boldly and freely on their grievances. One or two of them I believe will not be aired as it will be edited out. We are afraid that the school will award maximum demerit points to the students on what their parents had to say about the school!!

This father brought a stack of Bahasa version of his Form 4 son's Maths and Science textbook which he wanted to "throw" back to the principal. He said, "My son has been taught English from Std 1 to Form 3 and scored a couple of A's in between will now be taught completely in Bahasa. He together with the rest of his schoolmates in Form 4 are caught completely offguard. What nonsense is this? This is not I want."

When our PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak went to Vatican and met the Pope last year and he asked the Papal, "Lord, how can I get all Christians in Malaysia to vote for me?" His Holy See replied, "I can't ask you to sin no more. But you can buy them lunch and get closer to them."

So we read last week, that our PM hosted a grand luncheon for the leaders of the Christian Federation of Malaysia (CFM) and announced several measures to address issues raised by the Christian community.

In his speech, we read that the prime minister among many other things said, "The government gave due recognition to the tremendous contributions by mission schools to the development of education in the country. We recognise the wishes of mission schools which are owned by churches which want to maintain their traditions and ethos."

And one of the most important ethos is the appointment of the principals for mission schools. In his speech, Najib gave the assurance that the Education Ministry (and I don't think he can get the Minister of Education to agree on that) adhere to the practice of full engagement and consultations with the respective school boards so that the principals are suitable and acceptable. This means that the principals of mission schools should adhere to the directive of the school trustees or board of governors. In the words of Muhyddin, "Mission school first, MoEd second.

So here comes the interesting part that I found out today. One of the parents, a lawyer whose kid is studying in the Methodist Boys’ School in Petaling Jaya was fuming mad when he found out that the principal directed the teachers to teach in dwi bahasa and use the Bahasa Malaysia textbooks. He called me for help.

The next thing saw the principal switching to PPSMI using English only for BOTH teaching and text book faster than he changed his underwear. I don't have to tell you what really happened.

Action speaks louder than words of assurance. This case is not isolated but found from West to East. Politicians should be made to sign in black and white whatever they announced. Why must it be ]1Malaysia 2Stop 3Look 4Gone?I[/U]f the Education Minister or Ministars of the schools are required to sign the directives, how is it possible for them to do the Flip Flop if they really read and sign it? No civil servants would ignore anything they read and had to sign it. And this is being done in the many private sectors too. For a job not done, ignorance is not an excuse then.

Read a comment in The Star asking DPM to give up his job for the professional. Yes, I was thinking why are Malaysians so patient with these kind of nonsense politicians. If this happened in Japan or US, I wonder whether he would still have his seat. We Malaysian are really different. We tolerate all sorts of nonsense, from drivers who drive against the one way traffic flow, to drivers park his car on the road and totally block the traffic, doctors who kill peoples' time(life) by kept them waiting for hours, teachers who don't know how to teach, police that stay aware from crime prone area because worried about their safety, .....

The protest you help to organize at usj12 school bring immediate results. My son in form 4 has got his maths and science text books in english. Thank u for all the hardwork done.

The above is one of the many sms (which I have forwarded as and when I received it to the ADUN Subang Jaya YB Hannah Yeoh) that were sent to me by parents many expressing how grateful they are but more importantly how relieved they were. All Form 1 and Form 4 students are now taught in English for Maths and Science and they were given the English textbooks for both subjects which the teaching will be based on. They will NEVER NEVER NEVER revert to the Bahasa Malaysia textbooks which were handed out to them when they began school last week because all them have returned* their Bahasa Malaysia textbooks to the school as requested by the school!! Praise the Lord. So it is PPSMI all the way and no turning back. However, the workbook will be in dwi bahasa (meaning the same question is asked in English and Bahasa Malaysia) which the students can opt how they are going to answer the questions. That I feel is OK.

I strongly suggest that all parents now pay particular interest and attention in their children's study and report here if there is any deviation which there should not be. The Minister of Education has empowered all school principals to make a decision on the language used and it is our duty to ensure that this decision by the SMK USJ12 school is final and is followed strictly.

* In my earlier posting No 24 where the man in orange striped T-shirt who said he wanted to 'throw' the Bahasa Malaysia textbooks back on the principal, well, he didn't do that. You must excuse him for during that time he was very angry. But he is a gentleman and his reason for wanting to do so makes sense. Honestly speaking, I was ready with my digital viewcam and looking forward for him to do that and then upload my video on You Tube. I understand his son happily and gladly has returned the Bahasa Malaysia textbooks to his teacher. Habis cerita.

I do not think the ADUN will just turn up on the spur of the moment if she was not consulted much earlier and it is likely that our dear member PC was just the messenger who informed us of the gathering? My apologies if i had misunderstood but let us give credit to the right person where it is due.

Nope - he didn't start the demo... he HELPED pass the information to a lot of concerned parents and had liased with LGB and HY in his capacity with CPS (Concerned Parents of Selangor)
Hope this clarifies a bit of what happened...
Nevertheless, he deserves a pat too, for keeping us parents updated every now and then with the sms & phone calls...

When I read this, I was peeing in my pants. I don't want to spend 3 days 2 night in the Hotel Balai USJ8 courtesy of the police.

But when I saw this, it brought back the smile on my face :)

Thank you USJ27Resident for saying I was not the one who started the demo. It looks like someone wants my innocent 15 year old daughter to be awarded demerit points.

It was not even a demo in the first place. It was a PC (Press Conference) no doubt by a Yeoh and it is Hannah Yeoh. What I was doing is still a PC but with the prefix K. The gathering of concerned parents at the school gate was to hear what our ADUN Hannah Yeoh has to say and hoping that someone with authority from the school perhaps the Guru Besar would update the parents. But neither she nor anyone from the school was nowhere to be seen.

For the group photographs, the press wanted some expressions and what better way to do that than by showing the placards which I gladly supplied them. A picture paints a thousand words and what you see are words expressing the parents wishes for their children studying here.

Exactly!
These days passing info & putting it on the net can be a scary thing!

From what I've been told, the Principal was "pretty" rattled, sampai semua pintu dan gate sekolah dirantai dan dikunci..... :D Mebbe PPD and MoE gave her, some demerit points instead... :p
