is there any other way beside laser for permanent hair remover?how much is the cost for laser hair remover and will the laser treatment bring side effect to our skin and part of our body?i would like to know more can u give me the Dr Lim contact num,her clinic address and her email?
Firstly, there is no permanent hair removal ,we talk about permanent hair REDUCTION these days. Statistically, about 20% of hairs can grow back after 2 years but it is usually fine hair.
There are no permanent side-effects.. Cost depends on size of area covered. e.g. Rm1200 for armpit hair (4 sessions) - Doc

how much for both leg half of the leg and hands coz i am bit hairy.
Total cost for 4 sessions of hair removal of legs (below knee) is RM3200
Back of hands would cost RM1200. If this person is referring to the entire arm (below elbows) 4 sessions cost RM2400 - Doc
I would suggest you make appointment to get a more accurate cost estimate and also to further ask any questions that may arise before you commit or make a decision - Patrick

Our Doc has sent me some information brochures on low level laser therapy which is a home use device for adjunctive therapy of a lot of health ailments including joint pains, wound healing, high blood pressure, poor peripheral circulation (e.g. diabetics) , weak immune system.
She has also asked me to announce that she has 10 units which are going at dealer's price on a first-come first serve basis. Please contact her if you are interested to know more about this device or if you know anyone who might be interested.
And if you wish to browse the brochures which are in pdf files, please email me your email address so that I can forward them to you.

what is the difference between LHE and IPL??
LHE uses light & heat, IPL uses only intense pulsed light. LHE is no longer popular because results are inferior (esp wrt hair removal). IPL is more enduring. - Doc

Hi,
What is the best treatment for acne scar(slight) open pores and dull skin? Best here means effective and not too painful, have seen my friend doing IPL and judging from her reaction it was very painful!

Someone asked:
"Hi Patrick,
In one of the previous posts, the doc mentioned that the Brava system was quite effective but advised to get it only when they've improved on the design. I wish to know if they have done that yet?
Many thanks!"
The Doc says "Yes, they have updated some design features. They now sell it with one set of domes first (cost abt RM4K), and if you want to increase size, 2nd set of dome cost abt RM1.6 -2 K - have to check the price though."

Totally non-painful treatment would be some creams and microdermabrasion. Botox injections are very effective to shrink pores. IPL is NOT painful because numbing cream can be used. - Doc

Skin Needling for acne scars - Anyone tried it?
Could anyone share your experience and your results? How much of an improvement did you obtain? How many treatments? Does its effect vary with dark skinned individuals?
I'd like to try a session (6 treatments) but I really need to know how effective it is. I've been dissapointed before with various treatments that claim this and that but resulted in very little, not to mention the expense!
Please any info?

may i know how much it costs just to remove a small 2milimeter mole?
Doc suggest best to see a plastic surgeon for excisional surgery (i.e. cutting mole out) if you want guaranteed removal. Laser may not completely remove the whole mole as they can be quite deep. Cost of laser would be RM100.
But donkeykong, maybe you may want to try an old grandmother's trick but which often works! If the protrusion of your mole is significant, use a a thread and tie around it very tight when you go to sleep at night. It hurts slightly, but then no pain, no gain! You may have to do a few sessions. What the process does is to deprive the mole of blood and kills it. Worth giving it a try. Doesnt cost you anything!

Patrick. How much does laser resurfacing cost at Dr. Lim? I know many will answer and say its different depending on this and that, but I am hoping not a question for my question. Just a rough estimation would do.
By the way, does microdermabrasion does anything for acne scars? Need an answer urgently cause really thinking of going for it. Some people say micro is only for removing dead skin cells only. If so wouldn't exfoliating scrub do the same? Why pay hundreds?

Well, I did go for the needle abrasion (6 treatments) for my acne scars and the results are remarkable. Out of 100%, I gave it a 75-85 percent. My family members and friends noticed the improvement and asked what did I do to my skin. The results still varies with each individuals so I reckon that you should give the doctor a visit. ;)

DOC - Laser resurfacing implies either CO2 or Erbium Yag resurfacing i.e. laser that burns off top layer of skin leaving it nice & raw then leaves post-inflammatory pigmentation in Asian skin. This I don't do. So can't give cost estimation.
Microdermabrasion can be done to varying depths. For acne scars, one has to go quite deep - slight pain is experienced. Too deep ---> see above laser resurfacing. Too shallow, just like a facial. So one has to know how deep to go. That's why I charge RM120 per session. Market rates for docs vary but legally, we're allowed to charge up to a ceiling price of RM300.
Generally speaking, microderma only good for shallow scars. For treatment of acne scars, please refer to a previous post on treating acne scars. Rgds.

microdermabrade quite deep to get scar improvement.

Someone posted:
hey there, just wanna ask for a few advise. Since i've been through microdermbrasion for like 7 times already. As i read those older post, its written there that discolouration can be removed with microdermabrasion. Well, all i see is that my skin has improved in term of getting smoother and shinny. thats good of course, but the scar is still there. The reason why i post this is because i'm going to get the 5-6 microdermabrasion package for like rm500-rm600? well, i hope these money won't go to waste and so i ask you here. hopefully that you will help me out asap. thanks.
Doc has replied:
Microdermabrasion doesn't improve depressed (indented) acne scars unless you go much deeper in which case it won't be "micro" anymore - deeper dermabrasion does help superficially indented scars.
Microdermabrasion does help remove discolouration (post-inflammatory pigmentation) but you have to be very patient. It's faster and best combined with topical lightening and/or peeling creams. You should already see some lightening by 7 times if you've diligently combined with lightening creams. In fact, if you want to save money, first priority would be to get some good creams. If you have extra budget, then add microderma
Hope this helps.

Hi would like to find out more on how to remove keloid scars and how much it would roughly cost me and how long it would take to recover.
Doc says Keloid scars are difficult to remove per se. The only way of removing them is to surgically cut them out but there is of course the risk of inducing another keloid from the surgery.
One can flatten keloids by using Cica-care (check price in pharmacy - abt RM100 I think) combined with kenocort injections (RM165 per session) - no. of sessions rerquired unpredictable. Done every 4-6 weeks .

Scar treatment takes at least 3 months to START seeing improvement, good results take 9-12 months. No instant miracles, I'm afraid!
If a temporary improvement in appearance is required (lasts only 1 week or so) - can do laser but temporary improvement is only due to swelling. Multiple sessions (abt 5) needed for long term improvement, and patience up to 1 year! - Doc

Sounds like this is a case of a variety of atrophic (depressed) scarring. There are various methods involved - subcision, spot peels, needleabrasion, laser for collagen stimulation. Upon review, I can better advise what are the best methods based on type of scar, degree of intervention patient wants (and how much downtime you can accept) and budget. - Doc

Doc says it's not a problem to go back on doxycycline. If the breakouts worsen, you should stop micorderma for awhile.

Doc says the type treatment & how often you have to come depends on the type & depth of your scars. She has lasers, microdermabrasion, chem peels, needleabrasion. It's best that you see her for a consultation so that she can answer your questions properly, and also quote your correctly.
Patrick - Dont worry, as USJ.COM members, she wont charge you just for consultation.

Sweetpea asked: I wish to have Dr. Lim's contact details. I am also interested to find out if Dr. Lim does eyebags removal. I heard about an anti-aging vaccine which is available at a clinic in Mont Kiara but wish to find out more about the products as I'm afraid of side-effect. Is there any website which I could surf to get more info?
Doc: I don't do eyebag removal per se - this entails surgery (done by plactic surgeons) to remove the fats in th eyebag. What I have are lasers to tighten up loose skin under the eye.
If there is such a thing as an "anti-aging vaccine", it won't just be confined to a clinic in Mont Kiara. Good luck with your search for the fountain of youth. For heaven's sakes, don't get sucked into believing things like the existence of an "anti-aging vaccine"!

doc, do brown spots (the ones that are visible after a pimple is removed and the area healed) improve after regular application of 100% vitamin C? why does the bottle advises that 100% vitamin C can be used for max 30 days and then we have to revert to 60-70% vit C?

Doc says the above new laser called Elite is capable of skin tightening & improving skin laxity even better than an RF device like Thermage.
Not only does it generate new collagen, it also improves rosacea (condition whereby face has many red vessels) and superficial broken capillaries.
This skin tightening procedure can be combined with BOTOX and dermal fillers to give optimal anti-wrinkle results.
Although 1 session can give very good tightening results lasting 2-3 months, 5 sessions done monthly is recommended for optimal results lasting at least 1.5 years.
Doc has an introductory offer for members until June 30th 2007.
Please email/call/SMS for your appointments or for more details about this new laser procedure.

Deep scars will need combination methods to treat, e.g. scar excison, subcision, needling, laser, etc....depends on type of scar, says Doc.

Hi Patrick!, I have 2 questions:
1) I have googled up and read about BRAVA and I'm very interested in getting it for myself....in my case, I lost 70 pounds when I was a teenager, I'm 22 now, although my breasts are not saggy, they definately need more volume and firmness...I am a small 36C cup (I was a full 38D cup when I was overweight), and I want to fill them out to a full 36D cup or atleast to a full C cup. I'm 166cm tall and currently weigh 61kg. I am planning to lose another 4-6kg. Is Brava suitable for me (no one in my family has a history of breast cancer and etc). Can I use BRAVA while losing weight to prevent further tissue loss from my breasts AND to increase the size at the same time? is this possible? how much does the BRAVA system cost, where can I get it, and is it cheaper than cosmetic surgery?
2) My cousin has some pigmentation around the areolaes of her breasts (they look like light brown freckles or something...she got it checked and it was nothing serious, just a case of pigmentation) and she has tried all sorts of creams to lighten them but to no avail. Is there a quick and effective way to get rid of this pigmentation, what kind of peels of lasers would be suitable, how long will it take, and around how much will it cost? its just a circular area around the areolaes of her breasts.
3) Will Dr. Lim be able to help us? We live in KL....Please leave me his contact number and address at tickledgreen@yahoo.com
thank you in advance! :)

I also have some dark pigmented spots on my back (from acne before) and buttocks and a few on my thighs...I want to lighten and even out my skintone in these areas...what can I do to wipe them all out out that isn't too expensive (below RM1500) but will deliver results within a month or less? is there any kind of doctor-prescribed lotion or body wash that will make them peel off and disappear quick? I've been prescribed hydroquinine creams but they don't do a thing and it's such a hassle applying them to hard to reach places!
thanks again.

Doc's answers to your questions:
1) You're advised to lose all the weight you want 1st before starting Brava. Beinf nutritionally deficient will compromise Brava results.
Cost is abt RM4.5K, cheaper than surgery. If you only want full C, achievable with Brava. If you want D, you need surgery
2) Some degree of pigmentation ON the areolae is common. Skin in this area is so sensitive, I wouldn't use lasers or peels on it. If the pigmentation is NOT on the areolae, you can try laser/IPL

Doc says :
If you are skin type 3-4 , i.e. not too dark, you can try IPL.
If you have dark skin, IPL is risky - can burn & cause more pigmentation. In this case , you'll have ot be more patient & use more potent peeling & lightening creams. Can combine with microdermabrasion +/- transderm to penetrate lightening agents thru the skin.

Thanks for your prompt response on my request, Patrick.
Just wanted to check on something. I have seen few docs for my acne scars and done more than 12 cooltouch laser, couplke of microderm and few chemical peels. After all these treatments, I found that my skin only improved about 20% - 30%.
Recently, I was introduced to another doctor who said that I need 1 strong chemical peel and 2 weeks later to have fillers on. Did the peeling for an out of this world cost of RM 600. After more than 1 week, my skin didnt peel at all. Is this normal? When consulted, I was told that it only peel deep in the skin. I was also quoted about RM 2000 for the fillers. So before I proceed further with this dr. I'd like to know if you think the doctor is cutting corners or overcharging me for the treatment.
Am really interested to switch to Dr Lim's services and plan to stick to her. At the sametime, I just need to know the answers to my doubts before I proceed.
Thanks so much.

It's a free market ( willing buyer, willing seller) but here are ceiling prices set by the government for doctors:
Chemical peel RM255
Price of filler will depend on type of filler material & brand.
At present, it's easier to control doctors than beauticians but it's still a "free market" mentality out there.
As for whether you skin should peel or not.... generally, "strong" chemical peel would imply you should see skin peeling. Never heard of "peel deep in the skin". There are home peel creams/lotions whereby the peeling is very mild & may not be visible. But for RM600......
BTW, however strong a chemical peel , it doesn't remove depressed scars, only discolourations. Some may claim improvement in very very slightly depressed scars but in my experience if you want to do a peel deep enough to improve that very slightly depressed scar, you're more likely to burn the skin b4 the scar is improved! - Doc

I don't know about Q3 but Quanta systems is a company that manufactures lasers to your specs i.e. they come with what you want. So Quanta laser is not a specific laser.
But this is a fact: NO LASER WILL SHRINK ICE PICK SCARS, tighten pores temporarily , yes, but definitely not ice-picks.
There will be many people who make lots of claims about what their machines can do but just beware - Doc

Doc/ Patrick,
Need your views and advise on this.
Do you think is a good idea that I immediately opt for Fillers to minimise the pitted acne scars on my face?. At the same time,go on for other treatments to actuallytreat the scars eg needling and microdermabrasion? Can this be done? How long after having the fillers can I start on the needling & microdermabrasion? I have an idea on the cost for the other treatments but can doc provide an estimate for the permanent fillers eg aquamid per, say 1cc, which she usually charge? I know that for my case I would at least need about 4 ccs.
Thanks for your assistance.

Doc's comments and advice: Frankly, I haven't had great results with fillers for pitted scars. Reason being - if the scar tissue underneath is not excised (cut), the pit will still be there, even if one pumps in filler underneath. I've also seen fillers done by other specialists for pitted scars - the pit is still there plus a palpable lump underneath.
I'm not a fan of permanent fillers because it can give permanent problems. They may advertise that it can be removed but don't bet on it being completely removable. Moreover, safety beyond 6-8 yrs has not been proven as these permanent fillers haven't been in use longer than that. Besides, I've heard of people forgetting they had permanent fillers done, then had surgery or injection at the filler site, puncturing the permanent filler and causing gross infection.
I belong to that school of doctors who use ONLY temporary fillers (i.e. safest being hyaluronic acid)...."first do no harm". Charges start from RM1000 for 1 ml, depending on brand.

Hi...i'm a new joiner, i have a few skin problems which are very irritating, hoping to get advise from doc. :)
I’m combination skin type, which is very oily on T zone and dry on both cheeks. Last time, I visited a clinic and the doc recommended me to take the medicine which can actually control the oiliness on my face, but the side effect is my lip would be very dried. :( I stop taking the pill quite some time already as I’m afraid of other side effects. Is there any other way to control the oiliness on my face, tried using oil control gel but it did not help much.
1. I have chicken pox scar on my nose, can it be removed permanently? Please suggest what type of treatment would help on this. How much? How many sessions need to take?
2. What treatment can cure large open pore, I have this problem on both of my cheeks, can it be cured? How much? Usually how many session will only see the result?
3. Any cream of gel can cure dark circle, I have seen one brand in market which is hylexin, has anyone tried this brand? I have tried using so many products to cure it, however my dark circle still look serious. What treatment would be recommended for dark circle, and how much?
4. Lastly, what treatment can lighten up freckles? I have freckles on my upper cheek which is getting serious. Any cream can reduce it? Any recommended sun block? How’s biotherm product, as I’m thinking to change the product that I’m currently using (recommended by beautician, and it’s too pricy)
Appreciate if you could provide me the contact number and location of the clinic. :D

Doc's response to your questions:
1. Depth of scar can be lessened. Permanent would suggest
subcision/needling. Cost Rm150. No. of sessions varies, upto 6x .
2 No permanent cure - pore size is genetic. There are laser, peels etc to give
temporary results.
3. You just have to try different products until you find one that works for
you.
4. Laser works best. Just use a reputable sunblock. Biotherm is expensive too!

Hi Patrick,
I'm new to this forum and I would be grateful if you can provide an answer to some questions I have. Just a lil' background on myself: I am 23 years old and I had acne since I was 16. With some help from a drug called Roaccutance, the acne is now controlled but my face is still ALWAYS red and it gets redder when I go under the sun or drink even the slightest bit of alcohol. Upon searching the net, I realised that I could be suffering from Rosacea. Hence my questions below:
1. I read that IPL is one of the best treatment for Rosacea eventhough it's not a guaranteed success for every individual. Do you know of any dermatologist in Malaysia who does IPL? And if yes, what are the usual charges?
2. What are the side effects that one might experience from IPL?
On the other hand, if I do not have Rosacea (I hardly experience flushing like most Rosacea sufferers experience) but am still always red, what could the cause be?
Thank you :)

Doc says IPL can reduce redness by at least 30%. Usual charge for whole face ranges from RM300 - RM1300 , depending on brand of IPL.
In wrong hands, IPL can burn & scar

Thousands and one people have advertised how miraculous laser can help scars. Personally I have very bad scars. I went to a doctor has a clinic in klang and bangsar I forgot her name. Few months back, where she promised at least 80% improvements. I was so disappointed to throw all my money there come out I can say, I only see 5%. I really need help as the scars is so bad, I am already at my depression mode. I don't know how long more I can handle this. Patrick, does Dr. Lim charge for consultation like all other doctors? I just want to hear his opinion on my situation and true results. I don't expect 80%. If I can see about 50% I think I am also happy. I wanna make an appointment, kindly provide me with contact details as soon as possible?

wkf, Doc has this to say:
Sorry, can't help here. Anyway, prices really vary between plastic surgeons because it's a procedure that requires skill hands to get a nice result. Even competence level varies between plastic surgeons. Can't recommend any because don't know who's the best at neck liposuction.
A possible option is to visit a plastic surgeon and ask for photos of his/her work to get an idea of his/her achievement.

Thanks Patrick for the info. I went to see Dr. Lim today, very soft spoken professional caring sounding doctor. She seemed real and I hope its true what she speaks of. I haven't really see anyone giving feedbacks on improvements after going to Dr. Lim. Or maybe I didn't see or read it. But anyways, I am starting on the whole course with Dr. Lim and will keep this forum updated on the progress.

Dr. Lim did not made me buy expensive useless cleanser like how I was previously persuaded to by other doctors. The advice I get was to use what I already has, the right way. Helps me save some money. Next appt is in two months, shall look foward to it. I am hopeful!

In view of many questions posed by our forumers, our Doctor has kindly agreed to do a little write up for the benefit of those who may be interested. Here it is:
I am constantly bombarded with questions from clients about acne scars & I've read about miraculous cures of acne scars even more in the media. What I will cover below is by no means a complete summary of the topic. My aim is to answer common questions posed to me & merely to separate out some of the truth from the hype that is being advertised out there.
Advertising "inaccuracies"
1) Before & after pictures shown are often their best pictures i.e. top 10% of their results (assuming they are real & not "doctored" pics) so don't ever assume that you will get such wonderful results as depicted.
2) Of course, some pictures are digitally altered - one of them which keeps getting repeat press is the TOTAL elimination of laughing lines by light therapy done by one Company. The after photo is so blurred, it is obviously altered!
3) My clients often ask me about YAG light therapy for acne scars due to aggressive advertising by another Beauty firm. Well, their YAG light is short pulsed & will do almost nothing for depressed acne scars. Optimistically, combined with carbon, it may give one temporary pore tightening (not acne scars) but I don't see this as being superior to microdermabrasion which is much cheaper.
Misconceptions on the consumer's part:
1) When the consumer hears about improvements ranging from 30-100%, they often hear the "100" & not the "30". Believe me, I have often been asked "Can my acne scars be completely restored back to normal skin?" The answer is a flat "NO".
2) different types & depth of scars will respond differently to different types of treatments - fillers, lasers or chemical peels.
3) there is much individual variation to the degree of improvement - factors involved are not just type & depth of scar, concurrent skincare, concurrent treatments (combination treatments always give best results but of course there is added cost) smoking habits, age of patient, etc all play a role
Gold standard - ablative lasers
The gold standard of acne scar treatment is CO2 laser resurfacing - a laser that literally burns off a whole layer of skin leaving a raw surface that takes about 10 days to heal. This is rarely done here because of the potential side-effects of scarring & permanent pigmentary changes in our Asian population.
Erbium Yag laser - another ablative laser, but burns off less skin, hence lesser benefit but same side-effects as above.
Fillers
Done by skilled hands - gives nice results but they are temporary, lasting 3-8 months at best. I would never try permanent fillers as skin laxity changes with age so you can imagine the permanent lumps under scars left behind as your skin thins & sags with age.
Chemical peels
TCA chemical reconstruction of scars can improve scars by 30-70% . Again, please bear in mind, the 70% figure is for the more superficial scars. The deeper they are (e.g. deep ice-picks - but this method works best for ice-picks) the more difficult to improve.
Non-ablative lasers
These lasers do just that - they do not ablate (remove) the skin but stimulate new collagen growth hence tightening the skin.
COOLTOUCH - dinosaur for acne scars. Was popular 5 years ago, but now abandoned by doctors in favour of fractionated lasers. Anyway, several people who have had a course of Cooltouch laser done report to me no more than 30% improvement in depth of scars. My personal opinion (based on what I've read & hearsay from people who've had the procedure): Good adjunct to subcision of scars i.e. after freeing up scar tissue tethering the skin with subcision, the laser will stimulate new collagen to help flatten the scar.
SMOOTHBEAM - still a good laser to reduce active acne & knock off oil glands. But for acne scars, some reports say up to 85% improvement but so far, people I know who have had a course of treatment only report <20% improvement. My personal opinion (based on what I've read & hearsay from people wo've had the procedure): Good to reduce active acne for people who don't like side-effects of oral drugs but please note the expense. Dinosaur for acne scars.
Long-pulsed Nd YAG laser - Personal opinion (based on what I've read & personal experience with the laser) - good adjunct to subcision. Please see Cooltouch above.
Fractional lasers
New kid on the block - very confusing array of lasers even for doctors.
Fractional lasers are divided into :
1) fractional ablative &
2) fractional non-ablative.
No prizes for guessing fractional ablative will give better results (See gold standard - ablative).
Fractional ablative just means removing skin by punching little holes vertically in the skin. The deeper the punch, the better the result (& the more painful!) for acne scars (many many different brands have flooded the market but basically, they have different depths of penetration). Fewer side-effects cf. ablative lasers but lesser benefits as well.
Saw some writeup quoting 50-100% improvement for scars, but a prominent speaker in a recent international meeting in Bangkok said expected improvement is in the range of 30-50%.
If I had RM12.5K (cost of 5 sessions) to spend & had acne scars, I would pick this laser - maximum benefit with minimum side-effects. From what I've read, works wonders for rolling scars, not so well for deep pitted ice-pick scars.
Needleabrasion +/- subcision ("poor man's fractional laser")
Multiple tiny needles punch small holes in the skin - cuts scar tissue & stimulates new collagen. Works almost as well as fractional laser if done aggressively enough but much cheaper! (RM1800 for 6 sessions but I heard some other places charging RM3500, even up to RM4800). Overall, 30-50% improvement can be expected.
Different types of treatment work differently for different types of scars so one's expectations & results have to be tailored. There is no "one size fits all" kind of treatment.
My apologies if it is still confusing but this is just something I've penned in an hour. You're most welcome to call or come for consultation if you still have unanswered questions.
Yours sincerely,
Doc

hello..im new 2 this forum n id like to know more about Intense Pulsed Light Hair removal and if dere is a minimum age requirement 4 this procedure..thx
Doc says:
"Laser hair removal (many different types of laser - Elite is the safest for dark Asian skin types) is much more effective than IPL hiar removal. There is no minimum age requirement per se. It's safe even for teenagers but hormonally teens are not "stable" yet so hair may regrow. Hence, if done during your teens, then the procedure may APPEAR ineffective.

tina, Doc's response to your queries:
1) Unfortunately the myth of whitening vitamin C injections has now been entrenched as the gospel truth. Vitamin C is just a vitamin - it doesn't have any bleaching properties despite what you've read in the media hype. Just take high dose oral Vit C (1200 mg/day) if you wanna try- same effect as injections but costs less, less painful, no complications!
2) There is no way you can completely get rid of stretchmarks but there are treatments to make the appearance less obvious. e.g. laser or IPL to reduce the redness. Laser, microdermabrasion, needleabrasion to stimulate collagen to tighten the skin.

Doc says it's an expensive chemical peel. Only suitable up to Chinese skin, not for darker skin types. Therefore she had returned the machine.

I have sent your our Doctor's contact. As for placenta treatment, please read the following from our Doc:
Jan 11, 2005
Placenta beauty treatment leads to liver disease
TOKYO - A WOMAN injected with human placenta essence for cosmetic purposes had to be hospitalised after developing acute liver disease.
Ironically, the doses she received at a Tokyo beauty clinic were of Laennec, a proprietary form of human placenta authorised to be used for treating liver and other diseases.
The woman, in her 40s, developed exhaustion and jaundice in July and was diagnosed with acute hepatopathy, a condition in which liver cells are destroyed by mutated white blood cells.
The condition was believed to have been caused by adverse reaction to the placenta essence, which caused her white blood cells to develop abnormal forms.
Like generic human placenta essence, Laennec is used for cosmetic treatment in Japan.
Placenta treatment is popular here for its purported effectiveness in combating the effects of ageing and menopause. -- YOMIURI SHIMBUN/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
Our Doc commented:
There are still many people out there who are still duped into believing that such injections are the elixir of youth and without side-effects. Apart from the side-effect mentioned in the Japanese newspaper article above, anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction with breathing difficulties & drop in blood pressure i.e. the type that can kill you..e.g heard of people dying from bee-sting allergic reactions?) is another very real side-effect.
If it truly were the elixir of youth, I would be injecting my parents & myself for sure, but I'M NOT. And I'm saying this as a doctor who is involved in the beauty trade.
Please circulate this email to your friends who need to know the facts so that they can make an informed decision about their lives. Unfortunately, this has degenerated into a "multilevel marketing" type of business where friends will tell you how wonderfully beneficial it is because they are getting a cut out of referring you to the injecting doctor or beautician. BTW, there are also a lot of legitimate MLM companies selling bona-fide products but the image has been tainted by many bad apples. There are too many bad apples in the cosmetic medical industry too. There is nothing I can do about it except to raise awareness where I can but there will still be many people who will risk their lives to look good.

Hi,
I have a patch of bluish grey birthmark on the side of my cheek the size of a 20sen coin and people always ask if I've got a blue black from falling. After searching on the net, I think it is Naevus of Ota. May I ask how can I have it removed? What is the latest and safest method of removal todate? How many sessions needed and what is the estimated cost? Kindly let me have the Dr's details, Tel No, Address, Name etc so that I can visit her for consultation.

It would be appreciated if forumers post any questions etc that they may have right here in this thread. Please DO NOT send me private mails. With immediate effect, I will only tackle issues, questions that are posted right here, and I will ignore questions sent to me by PM.
The whole objective is that questions and answers posted on this thread will benefit everyone who is interested in Health & Beauty. Administratively, it's also easier for me to monitor and moderate. If everyone were to start sending me PM, then it becomes private messaging and benefit only the writer! Besides, my PM Inbox will be clogged up in no time. Please use my PM only for confidential matters like you want to give me your email address, phone number etc. Or perhaps you wish to invite me for dinner....hey, I was joking of course!!
So, please post all questions on this thread so that everyone can benefit out of it. We must learn to share, ok?

"I'm getting married soon and I have ance scars on both sides of my cheek...very obvious and I wish I could look normal on my wedding day....can microdermabrasion & Lyra laser help reduce the scars or maybe you can advice on other treatments. Please help. - J"
Doc says "How soon is the wedding because collagen remodelling takes at least 1 year when you do laser, etc to stimulate collagen.
Alternatively if you haven't got much time, you can do 1 session of dermarolling - the 2 weeks b4 the big day. The immediate collagen contraction makes the scars smoothen out a lot, but of course, this effect is only short-term - just to pull you through the wedding."

Doc's reply: You can try to have the birthmark removed by laser but it may grow back. The only definitive way of removing it permanently is by surgical excision by a plastic surgeon.
As for the BCG scar - I can do injections to flatten it & later IPL to lighten it

She is not a plastic surgeon. For the benefit of our forumers, our doctor is qualified as follows, in her own words:
"1. MBBS (Uni of Melb, Aust)
2. Dip Prac Derm (Uni of Wales, UK)
3. Dip Cosmetic Science (Society of Cosmetic Scientists, UK) - This is not a "medical degree" - it is the basic degree that cosmetic chemists (the guys who formulate all the cosmetics in the market place) have to gain entry into the workforce of cosmetic R&D labs.
Australia has a society of cosmetic physicians and a society of cosmetic surgeons. France has a course in cosmetic dermatology, just to name one. I can assure you that "cosmetic medicine" doesn't have a "royal" recognition but it certainly doesn't stop a lot of doctors (not just dermatologists and plastic surgeons, gynecologists, opthalmologists, cardiologists, psychiatrists too!) and beauticians from practising "cosmetic medicine" simply because it is lucrative and in high demand.
The lines between cosmetology and medicine are blurred these days and I don't think anyone should have disdain for the highly trained aesthetician who performs low concentration chemical peels or microdermabrasion AS LONG AS THEY ARE PROPERLY TRAINED. They are doing so in US.
Nor should anyone have disdain for any doctor with an entrepreneurial spirit who chooses to practise cosmetic medicine (which involves handling lasers, Botox, etc, etc) AS LONG AS THEY ARE PROPERLY TRAINED.
Where did I get training for such procedures? Just like all other doctors, I attended courses and conferences, both local and overseas. Mostly paid for out of my own pocket and some paid for by drug companies."
Trust that helps... Patrick

Doc says: Oral anti-oxidant supplements do play a role in "anti-aging" but b4 you look into investing in them, look at your diet & lifestyle first. No point taking supplements if you smoke, eat junk food high in sugar, don't exercise, etc

Dear Doctor, i've been very interested in the above for treating a liver dysfunction i was diagnosed with recently. From what i've gathered thru consulting with other doctors, the product is indicated for liver dysnfuction and not for beauty purpose. What is your opinion on the matter? Your input is appreciated.

Dear SSTan,
You're right. The indications for this product is indeed liver dysfunction & menopause if you read the product insert.
I know someone undergoing such injections (at great cost) with another doctor for the purpose of alleviating her monopausal hot flushes. She has done 25 jabs & the hot flushes are still the same.
I don't get why she is doing it because the rationale behind doing the jabs was because she "didn't want to take artificial drugs such as HRT". Are jabs not artificial too? The doc who is doing it for her managed to convince her that placenta injections are "natural" but HRT tablets aren't. The same doctor is also encouraging her to inject Botox & fillers into her face. If that isn't a gross contradiction, I don't know what is.
You could try injecting the product but just be aware of the potential side-effects.
If anything untoward happens to you, insurance companies may not even cover you as they will of course look for excuses not to pay out as placenta injections are not registered with Ministry of Health Malaysia.
There are many oral supplements (registered ones) to support liver dysfunction - I would try those first.
If your liver problem is serious then you need to see a hepatologist - gastroenterologists who specialise in livers.
Hope this helps - Doc

Hi doc,
I've lost quite an amount of fat for the past years through dieting and exercising. And I noticed that due to this, my skin had loosen especially on my arm and thigh area. I'm now very interested in procedures to tighten my skin, without any invasive procedures. Appreciate if you can advice me the types of procedures that's available for me to consider.
I've searched around and noticed procedures such as Thermage and Masotheraphy. But I don't seem to understand the clear difference between each. Is both the procedures suitable for skin tightening? If yes, what's the price I'm roughly looking at? Do u provide such service? Any maintenance and how soon can I see the results?
There's also a procedure that I found on the web called MesoLift-RF. Is this procedure new and is there anyone in Klang Valley providing this service?
Thank you for your advice!

First of all, let me salute you for taking the only sure route to losing fat weight & along the way regaining your health.
For the benefit of others in the forum, please elaborate on the type of diet/food you ate & what kind of exercises you did to achieve your healthy weight goal.
Send a clear message..."There is no substitute for diet & exercise". Nothing else works for the long term - not liposuction, not body wrapping, not RF, not painful lipodissolve injections, not "slimming creams". Even if one does liposuction but eats like a pig over a festive period, guaranteed you'll go back to square 1 like I've personally witnessed in a fair number of my clients.
OK, enough ranting & going back to your question, there are lots of machines & procedures to tighten skin.
Skin tightening technology has not peaked yet & what I say today may be outdated in a couple of months time. However, there is SOME result for some technologies out there.
First of all, I don't know what you mean by your loose skin as I can't see you. If you have loose skin like a cow's dewlaps, then no non-invasive procedure is going to help - this needs surgical excision. If this is not the case, then read on.
All the technologies for skin tightening is all about delivering enough heat to the dermis layer of the skin to stimulate collagen & hence long-term skin tightening. We have
1) Radiofrequency e.g. Thermage, Accent, Tenor & a whole bunch of made in China & Taiwan mini RF machines which deliver nothing but the salon owner can claim to have RF! There is also division into unipolar RF versus bipolar RF - bit too technical for this forum.
2) Infrared heat -e.g Titan, Novaplus
3) Radiofrequency cum Infrared i.e. Syneron's machines including Velasmooth. Emax, etc
4) Long pulsed Nd Yag laser e.g. Gentleyag, Elite
5) Fractional lasers e.g Fraxel, Mosaic, Profractional, Starlux, etc
6) 1320 nm Cooltouch laser
Can't think of anymore off the top of my head. In this list (not exhaustive), RF & Infrared probably work best for body skin tightening.
Re: mesotherapy - I've gone to France to check out for myself first hand what the hype is all about. Mesotherapy is the technique of delivering substances into the skin, fat or body via small injections using small doses of drugs. This has been practised in France since the 60's & is a recognized branch of medicine in the French medical schools. when done correctly & within safe recommended parameters, it can deliver some real results for a lot of ailments - not superfantastic, but yes, some results can be seen.
Unfortunately, the rest of the world (esp. US docs who think $$$) has adulterated it & inject all sorts of new drugs at megadoses to
"slim your whole body down in 1 day!" - well, 1 chain clinic in USA which does a lot of lipodissolve jabs is looking at a class action lawsuit
Promises of "mesolift" - definitely exaggerated & misleading - no mesotherapy procedure can give you a facelift - some skin firming yes but definitely no "lifting" for sure.
Looking at Thermage - you'll be spending abt RM20-30K for body tightening & get a 20% chance of getting a good response
As for mesotherapy, personally, I'd rather spend on getting a good dermaroller & do needleabrasion only without spending a bom on skin firming serums/ampoules - cheapest. Cost abt RM1-2K & 3-6 sessions in 6 months.
What service do I have? Velasmooth - RM4K & 8 sessions to see result in 1 month
Whoever is offering mesolift RF will probably be delivering substandard results because if they have a good RF machine, they wouldn't need to pad it out with "mesolift" which is a misnomer anyway.
Phew, what a broad topic & so much more to say ..... Too much to type! Call me!

SSTan, our Doctor has replied to you:
Firstly, do not take my advice over that of a hepatologist - they know best! But you want to know what I know so here it is:
There are 2 brands of placenta commonly used in Japan - Melsmon & Laennec.
7 years ago, when placenta injections were getting popular in M'sia (used for anti-aging purposes), I asked my Japanese friend Dr. Ozeki, a very famous gastroenterologist in Aomori, northen Japan, about it. He retired last year because of health problems but apparently all taxi drivers in Aomori know "Ozeki Clinic".
Anyway, 7 years ago, his comments on Melsmon & Laennec were "It is good medicine but Rin-chan I would advise you not to use it because it has a risk of anaphylactic shock. I, myself have also stopped using it for this reason."
For me, after hearing it of course I wouldn't inject it into my patients. But, it's because I'm a doctor who would rather not risk litigation.
I suppose in your case, I don't know what liver condition you have - you have to make an educated decision about whether to use it or not. Your hepatologist may have recommended it because there is nothing else that works.
If you decide to use it:
1) Get the placenta straight from the source i.e. Japan manufacturer. You don't know what you're getting from runners here as they are all brought in illegally. It will still be cheaper for you to fly in there, buy it & hand-carry it home yourself as the black market placenta price is really jacked up +++. (Have an overseas holiday at the same time )
My colleagues who do placenta jabs would kill me for saying this... but it's true - I did my sums before.
2) Please do it in your specialist's office/hospital where there is emergency equipment on standby should you develop anaphylactic shock.
I think with these 2 provisos, you should be quite safe.
Do let me know if your liver condition improves with placenta jabs. We all learn by sharing & Patrick has done Malaysians a great service by starting this forum.
Let me know if you need help with buying placenta in Japan e.g. if you need doctor's recommendation, etc. I still have practising doctor friends in Japan who can help.
But if runners can buy placenta, you should be able to do so without doctors' prescription.
Take care & let us know how things turn out for you

Our Doctor wish to advise forumers the following:
My office will be closed from Nov 29th -Dec 2nd.
I will re-open on Dec 3rd with new opening hours i.e. Mon - Sat 9.30 am - 6 pm. I will be working on Thursday again which I previously took off. My new assistant, Yin, will also be starting work on Dec 3rd.
Attached are 2 articles which are only published in medical journals but I felt should be available for consumers to read. It is about fat-dissolving injections popularly known as mesolipo or lipodissolve. Please read all about the pros & cons.
The New Technologies Subcommittee on Fat Transfer & liposuction of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery issued this statement "Although mesotherapy may ultimately prove to be a viable adjunct or option for fat loss - further study is warranted before this technique can be endorsed."
There is an ongoing FDA-supervised placebo-controlled study of lipodissolve & I welcome the publication of its results. In the meantime, I would stick to non-injection forms of fat loss treatments.
I have a new Velasmooth machine which is FDA cleared to reduce cellulite & contour the body. Thousands of patients have been treated & 100% of patients have some sort of response to this treatment.
Velasmooth features 1. bipolar radiofrequency
2. infrared light energy
3. negative pressure & tissue manipulation to achieve
a) cellulite reduction
b) skin smoothening & firming
c) body contouring with improved circulation
d) relief of muscle aches & pains
Areas such as the neck, bra line, arms, hips (saddle bags), tummy (love handles), buttocks, thighs & calves can be recontoured.
To improve results from Velasmooth:
- please remove all body creams, shave & use a body scrub before the treatment
- maintain a stable body weight by not overeating
- do some regular exercise
The initial number of treatments are 8-16 done 1-2 sessions per week. Thereafter, 1 session is done every 2-3 months to maintain. Each session takes approx 1 hour.
Best candidates are those with a Body Mass Index (weight/height2) of 20-30.
This treatment is perfect for toning up the skin tissue after liposuction or toning up flabby skin after delivery.
Expect modest improvement after 6 sessions, best results after 16 sessions. Velasmooth doesn't help you lose weight but up to 2 inches loss can be seen. Treatments in most areas just feel like a warm intense massage.
Please email or text me for queries on procedures or ongoing promotions.

Hi Doctor,
Thanks again for your advice. My hepatologist tells me the product is now being tested here in malaysia for licensing purposes. My email to the manufacturer was replied but its at home. I'll post it here when i get home for the benefit of all. The gist of the mail was that the translation i took from here is wrong. The case was referred to the Ministry of Health and it was found that the patient had abused some kind of antibiotic used to clear skin (i'm not sure what its calle, but will post here later) She had been taking the antibiotics for more than 4 years continuously daily. They also sent me the copy of report which they say is available on their website (i cannot read japanese, blur!!)
Another important thing mentioned is that the product should be used for liver function improvement only and can only be used by doctors. They also have a regional office in Malaysia which i have requested information about.
Can i have your address as well doctor? Thank you.

Hi SSTan,
Thanks for the info. Good to get another perspective. The placenta you are referring to is Laennec? Is their Malaysian office called JBP or something?
The drug that the woman took - was it Roaccutane? - can cause liver problems too.
If your hepatologist has full confidence in the product for your liver ailment then you should consider it especially if there are no viable alternatives. Do you mind giving me the name of your hepatologist? I would like to call & talk to him about his opinion of this product. He is definitely more open- minded that our Director General of Health who is also a hepatologist but a terribly blinkered one. - Doc

Hi Doctor,
Thanks again for your advice.
Thank you.
Regards,
sstan
"After reading SSTan's post, I did some calling around & called the JBP Sea company which has been newly set up in Malaysia. As they are a subsidiary company - their Laennec product should be bona fide. However, they said over the phone that they only sell to doctors & they did specify that they are seeking registration approval only for liver conditions, not for anti-aging which is what it is used for 90% of the time.
They may not sell direct to end-user but no harm calling them to try. I think it's www.jbp-sea.com their phone contact is there on the website.
I may not have given the best advice earlier with regard the purchasing of Laennec placenta." - Doc
Patrick - Thanks Doc. Often we give advice to the best of our knowledge, though not necessary the best. We still appreciate your sincerity in giving free advice to our forumers here.

Most of us past the age of 20 are variously inflicted with hair loss at some time in our lives, be it due to genetics, stress, pregnancy, illness etc.
Hair loss treatment first starts with ascertaining the cause i.e. a consultation & if determined to be necessary , some blood tests. If the consultation & tests do not reveal any reversible hormonal causes then a multi-therapy approach is best used to halt hair loss & reverse some of the changes.
I think most people are familiar with established medical treatments for hair loss which includes:
1) Oral propecia for male pattern balding
2) Topical Regaine for both male & female pattern balding
Low level laser therapy is well-established in Europe for treating hair loss. It is effective but it is costly (RM15K per year) & inconvenient (twice weekly visits to the hair salon are necessary). This technology is now available in a home-use unit which is both affordable & effective. Please read about the details below.
Radiant hair rejuvenation lasercomb is now available locally. This unit can be used for a lifetime with only a single battery as running costs. As I advocate a multi-therapy approach, for those who purchase Radiant lasercomb from my clinic, I am offering synergistic medical treatment at very special prices on a long term basis:
1) Propecia
2) Regaine
3) Ballvic shampoo while stocks last
This hair care programme is done in the comfort of your own home, saving you time & money.
Please call or email if you have further questions or would like to make an appointment for a complimentary consultation before Chinese New Year.

Doc

Doctors do not enjoy special priviledges to run sales promotion.
This is a specific doctor who kindly help provide answers, solutions, guidance etc to our forumers on this thread for free. This posting is not her doing directly. I received a copy of her general email on the latest products, technology etc and sometimes with her special offer to forumers. I have used my discretion to disseminate such information for the benefit of forumers but at the same time, I have removed prices so far as possible so as not to be seen to be doing a "sales" promotion per se. Nonetheless, if forumers who participate on this thread feels uncomfortable with such information etc, then I can stop such postings in future.
I trust that answers your question.

Dear Patrick,
I fully understand your kindness and sincererity in helping the community.
and I am sure that there are many kind hearted people who would do the same.
Dont get me wrong, I am not here to stop such information from reaching the community. Go ahead and continue to do it.
It is just that I am a layman like you, but I know of a professional nutritionist from Australia who has 25 years experience in that field.
He has helped many from all over the world through nutrition to regain health after medical schools have given up hope on them.
Therefor being a compasionate person, I would like to share it with the community.
I was nursed back to good health by him and as such I wanted to share the benefit with all by inviting people who are interested to see him.
Therefore I posted my contact number, so that people can make appointment to see him.
By doing so, (maybe my method was wrong) , I was given a warning and my thread was deem to be sales promotion.
If you were me, and you have a good 5 star product which is superb, will you want to share with others? I am sure you would.
Probably the mistakes which I made was to tell my personal experience, of how I was cured(which is the thruth) but was deemed to be false health claims and will mislead the people (as claimed by a doctor which is not fair because he does not know my condition)
The problem with this world is that everyone think that a doctor is always right. but I would like to tell the people that there are more death through wrong prescription by doctors prescribing legalised drugs, than the death caused by the usage of illegal drugs. (scary isnt it?)
Nutritionist and pharmicist are not given much respect and recognition in Malaysia, but I can tell you with conviction that what the doctors does not know about nutritional medicine may be killing you. ( dont get me wrong I still respect doctors and I still have faith in them) It is just that most doctors are not well inform of nutritional products and drugs and may rely on companies to prescribe their medication.
I was prescribed high blood pressure tablets for the last 15 years by doctors, and the tablets was killing my liver by the years.(as per my yearly blood test).
(I am not blaming my doctor for the presciption because to him it was the best medical advice he could give to me at that point in time) but now, having learn more about nutrition from the australian, I have stop using the tablets for the past 2 months and my pressure remains good at 120 plus over 70 plus.
Having gone through this experience, I wanted to share with the world, but sorry to say that I am not allowed to recomend the product that is so good to me.
Thanks Patrick and keep up the good work and thanks the doctor also for me.
regards to all.

I appreciate your intentions related above. What you say is correct in that sometimes the way we put things across can create that subtle shade of difference making it a sales pitch.
At the same time, we do hope you appreciate that the small team of volunteers here are just trying to do their jobs to the best of their ability. There is no discrimination nor incrimination here whatsoever. As I said, we all do the best we can but sometimes, if in the course of our earnest duty, we are perceived otherwise, then we do extend our apology if anyone had felt offended.

Patrick,
Could u pls ask your doctor if he could advise on wht to do next??
My wife went for IPL at Beyond Beauty in Lot10 & Mid Valley branch.
They burnt her legs. She has now patches of burnt marks caused by the intense light. They refused to reimburse/compensate/re-treat the skin.
They told me to "sue" them if I could!
Long story cut short... After 1 month, since she was trying Aloe-Vera treatment, we went to a skin specialist who gave her some cream to apply and he said that these scars might just be permanent.
It's been 1 month since we visited the specialist, but no difference in the scars.
I am hoping if there is some kind of laser treatment she can go to clear the scars off.
Any chance of healing?

I had my spider veins removed by a nice softspoken lady doctor recommended by Patrick of course, and it worked great. Too bad i didn't have time to go again. This doctor was cautious enough and explained all the possible side effects of treatment. Getting treatment the 1st time should be slow and minimal to allow time for the skin to react. That way you will really know if that course of treatment is suitable for you or not. We all want instant results but it can come at a high price.
In Srindy's wife's case.. if she signed any waiver.. read again before trying to sue. I do hope she finds a way to recover from those scars. Good luck to Mrs Srindy..

If the burnt person is of darker skin type i.e. Indian or Malay, then the burn marks may be permanent; in fairer skin types, they are rarely permanent.
I think IPL should be banned because it is the main culprit in causing burns - the light is too broad spectrum hence can burn superficial layer of skin which you don't want to. Laser hair removal (long pulsed Ndyag is the safest in Asian skin) is much much safer & actually more effective than IPL for long term hair removal. But beauty centres will never buy good quality lasers because 1) they are expensive 2) reputable laser companies will not sell good lasers to beauty centres. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.
Anyway, I digress. The answer to this person's question is... there is no laser that can help post-inflammatory pigmentation. In fact, laser will make it worse. The best method of treatment is to use a good lightening cream together with a daily home-use fruit acid lotion (buffered, no more than 15%) to peel it gradually. Some gentle microdermabrasion will speed up the process. Scar improvement will take at least 6 mths to 1 year
srindy, I hope Doc's response above is of some assistance. Regret to hear of your wife's "mishap" - Patrick. And sorry for the late response. Just got back from overseas and still trying to get over my jetlag.
