Hi !
This is my first post to the site. I wonder if anyone could provide me with some information!
I have been looking on the net for somewhere that I can go and get lazer tattoo removal treatment, and approximate costs. Cant find anything!
I am a male, and have a small homemade tatoo on my finger which I would like to remove. It was done with a needle and ink, and is a darkish blue colour, approximately 1 inch in size.
Any suggestions as to a reputable clinic would be most helpful!
Thanks.

Good news. Doc says since yours is an amateur tattoo, the the Medlite laser which will remove it in one session. It shouldnt cost you more than 250. I have sent you her contact by pm in case you wish to pursue the matter further.

I would like to post this question to Dr.Lim because I can't seem to get any advice regarding accutane users. I have been on accutance for about 4 months now and I was wondering if accutance users could undergo IPL. Several answers I received (when I asked around) was no but the dosage I am on now is very low compared to the first 2 months. I only take 2 pils (20gm) a week and my skin feels normal again (minus all the previous side effects and oil production). Previously when I first started the accutane, my skin was very sensitive and looks inflammed and the list goes on so now my skin has healed about 80% (no acne anymore) but the remains of acne marks. I just want to know if I could go for IPL (I have done the treatment before) and is there any gentler and speedier method which could help me lessen my acne marks. I'd really appreciate it if I could get your advice. Thanks a bunch.

Ideally we would like IPL patients to be completely off Accutane for 6 weeks before attempting IPL which is really efficient for removing acne marks - this IS the fastest way of removing them. Accutane impedes skin healing. - Doc

Doc says "Nothing can "cure" stretchmarks, even the most up-to-date lasers but a variety of treatments can help improve the appearance of stretchmarks. Costs vary according to size of area treated and type of treatment. See me for an exact quote."

I am posting below an email received from one of our readers, and the doctor's reply for the benefit of everyone:

"Hi doctor,

Is it true that I heard fr my fren whose her sister and brother in law are
doctors in which they claimed we can get cancer from the spot of the
injection or the place somewhere in our skin where we get the injection. I
hope u'll know what I mean.

Ur explanation on this is highly appreaciated since I heard about ur famous
clinic fr my frens and interested in meeting you soon actually.

Tq very much."

Reply from doctor:

"Thankyou for your enquiry.

If your doctor friends are spreading this kind of information, then they are either very misinformed or they just want to scare you off Vitamin C injections.

The truth is you DO NOT get cancer of any sort from vitamin C injections. Cancer patients (or patients with a bowel absorption problem) who are malnourished and wasting away always get vitamin supplement injections to support their nutrition. So will doctors give cancer to cancer patients?! Utterly ridiculous, isn't it?

There has been a lot of anti-vitamin C injection sentiment highlighted in the press because of a lot of abuse both by beauticians, doctors and totally unqualified people who are overselling vitamin C as the elixir of youth. The truth is that vitamin C is something which is essential for our body function in many ways e.g. anti-oxidants to clean up free radicals, supporting our immune system, aid wound healing, building collagen in skin, etc , etc. What Vitamin C DOESN'T do is make you younger or bleach your skin white. With regards to "skin whitening", UV rays cause a lot of sun damage and dyspigmentation on our skin. Taking vitamin C supplements will help mop up the free radicals generated by UV damage and hence prevent pigmentation caused by UV exposure, not bleach you white.

The other way of delivering vitamin C is via mesotherapy - a technique of making multiple small pricks in the skin to deliver vitamins, hyaluronic acid, sin lightening agents, amino acids, etc directly into the skin. Safety depends on what you prick into the skin - stick to safe ingredients which are commonly used in cosmetics. Mesotherapy is merely a way of enhancing skin absorption of cosmetic ingredients! Nothing fancy! Problems arise when it is performed by untrained people who don't know what they are doing. So, please choose a doctor you can trust to perform this for you.

So, in summary, I am not an avid supporter of rampant abuse of vitamin C injections, but it does have a specific role to play in the medical field. Otherwise, large drug companies like Roche will not be manufacturing Injectable Vitamin C. Ministry of Health Malaysia does have one brand of injectable Vitamin B&C approved for use (but not Roche brand!)

I hope this answers your question and please feel free to Cc this answer to all your friends so they will not have misconceptions about this issue.

Sincerely,
Dr"

Hi Doctor,

Currently I'm on skin medication. Earlier on, my skin is oily at the T zone and my skin type is combination type. After taking the medicine, there is improvement on my skin. But there's a small problen. Skin 1/2 inch under my eye and nose area is kind of rough. When look closely it is like there's a lot of whiteheads pending to pop out but could not so there'll be an area which look rough with a lot of tiny tiny pores with bumps; it just semms like the pores are clog.

Is there any methods or applications which can get rid off the clogged pores?

Thank you.

Our panel Doc has cultivated a new found luv and would like to share her message with you. I guess there must be a lot of good in this because I have heard of the goodness from many a source now. But even if you dont happen to live in Mt Kiara area, it doesnt really matter. It's still food for thought. Anyway, read on....

Dear folks,

I can finally share with you a weight loss and management programme that everyone can adhere to AND sustain without making too many excuses. The usual excuses about not having enough time, gym too far, cannot exercise because of injured joints (all my excuses), slimming drugs having too many side-effects, cannot resist food, cannot afford healthy food, no time to cook healthy meals therefore can only eat outside food, etc, etc can be surmounted in this program that I am offering.

I started this program myself about 3 weeks ago and I have already lost 3 kg and have become stronger, healthier and fitter in the process. At the risk of sounding like a Marie-France ad, this program promises no strenuous exercise, no drugs and no dieting. But it doesn't cost you an arm and a leg. I spend an extra RM100 per month to achieve what I have said above.

Now, what are the components of this mysterious programme? Simple:-
1) Food replacement
2) Qi Gong type kung fu - fat people with joint problems, please don't squirm - even a 200 kg patient of mine can do it! BTW, these classes are conducted by the anointed 33rd generation kungfu Grandmaster himself, not by some novice who learnt a few steps and decided to teach

For people who work and live in Mont Kiara (all you sluggish overweight Sunrise employees included), I am waiving the RM100 registration fee because I need 20 people to start a class right here in MONT KIARA. There are also other classes held around KL.

This is a chance to change your lifestyle forever. This program places equal emphasis on physical, intellectual and spiritual development. It has changed my life in so many ways. Those of you who know me personally are seeing it already.
So, please call to find out more if you are interested in finally losing weight and keeping it off and develop yourself in other ways you never imagined.

Rgds,
Doc

Bad news: More than 80% of the world's population is affected by acne at some point in their life and there still seems to be no permanent cure.
Good news: A variety of topical and oral medications and new light based technologies are now available to prevent and treat this common skin problem.

What do we know causes acne?

- increased oil production in skin
- bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes
- inflammatory cells
- stress
- hormonal fluctuations e.g. puberty, woman's menstrual cycles
- certain foods

Acne is by no means a life-threatening disorder but severe acne can lead to permanent disfigurement and lifelong poor self esteem issues. To prevent long-term mental and physical harm, severe acne (especially the nodulocystic variety) should be treated with oral isotretinoin - a drug related to vitamin A. This drug has to be used in combination with birth-control pills in sexually active females as it can cause severe birth defects. No such problem in males. Used carefully, it can stop acne in its tracks.
Other medications that can be used are antibiotics and birth control pills. As always, combination with topical creams will yield best results.

As for light based technologies, studies show that twice a week treatment for 4 weeks can reduce acne by about 60% for as long as 3-8 months. This is effective for mild to moderate acne. For people who do not like to take or cannot take drugs, this is a good alternative with no side-effects.

You can call or email in if you have any questions regarding suitability for this type of treatment, and other details. As always, you can obtain my details from Patrick.

Rgds,
Doc

One should also be cautioned of the side affects of high dose concentrated Vitamin A. I presume you are referring to Accutane (also known s Ro-Accutane). Although some are debatable side-effects, but the patient should be pre-warned. Such as depression, hair loss, bone and muscular pains, internal organ damage, etc…

Being from India, it may be very difficult to treat your skin because of risk of pigmentation . Erbium Yag laser might leave post-inflammatory pigmentation. Microderma plus IPL probably safer in terms of side-effects. But for IPL must use 640 nm head otherwise risk of burns. - Doc

Although some are debatable side-effects, but the patient should be pre-warned. Such as depression, hair loss, bone and muscular pains, internal organ damage, etc…

The good Doc would like to add further to the above comment:

Please note that isotretnoin (aka Accutane, Ro-Accutane, Nimigen, Oratane - all brand names from various companies around the world) is NOT "high dose concentrated Vitamin A". The structure of the drug is chemically related to vitamin A but it is most definitely not the vitamin A that you find in your regular multivitamin.

My article was not meant to encompass everything about isotretinoin nor about treatment of acne in general.

The 2 take home messages were:
1) Severe acne leaves severe scarring - treatment with isotretinoin may be warranted.
2) There is new blue light technology which can help reduce inflammatory acne count - new treatment which I'm inviting appropriate candidates to try out in my clinic.

Re: side-effects of isotretinoin - I don't have to elaborate on all the side-effects of this drug. Type in any of the names listed above and you'll get a million hits. One thing to note is that most side-effects are dose-related and that most will disappear on cessation of the drug. I certainly do not advocate the careless prescribing of this drug nor witholding any information from patients before prescribing this drug. Someone from this forum was prescribed this drug and was told that it was "vitamin A10" - an obvious attempt to hide the identity of the drug from the patient.

As I was saying, severe acne (esp nodulocystic type) which leaves horrendous scarring - ice-pick, volcanoes, whatever description you like - may need isotretinoin to stop the progress. Those who harp only on the bad side-effects of isotretinoin haven't encountered the diffident patients of mine with severe acne scarring ( and extremely poor self-esteem, often male with no girlfriend) who come in hope of a cure for their scars - there is none for severe scarring. Or the parents who bring their children in for treatment of acne scars. They often voice that they didn't know there was treatment for acne otherwise they would have consulted doctors earlier - some are tearful as they speak.

Everyone should be given options and it is up to each individual to weigh the risks. Cancer patients are given 10-20% chance to live and you see them sign their lives away with chemotherapy.
There are very strict prescribing guidelines for isotretinoin - starting low dose, monthly follow-up, blood and urine tests and all patients have to sign a consent form before starting the medication.

So in summary, yes, all patients should be informed of all aspects of any drug - both pros and cons - as with any decision in life really. But the reality in life is that there will always be those who want to hide the truth from you...will housing developers tell you that a cemetary or an oxidation pond or freeway will be built right next to your luxury condo? :-)

Thanks doc for your further enlightenment ! - Patrick

Dear Patrick,

Can i know the procedure and cost to remove this tattoo?

http://img57.imageshack.us/img57/7296/shoulder3vg.th.jpg (http://img57.imageshack.us/my.php?image=shoulder3vg.jpg)

Medlite laser should do the trick.

Medlite laser is a 1064 Ng Yag laser that blasts the tattoo ink. Firstly , a local anaesthetic cream is applied under occlusion for 1 hour for adequate numbing. The laser session will usually take abt 30 mins depending on size of tattoo. The easiest colour to remove is black, other colours more difficult - takes more sessions. Some professional tattoos use multiple colours so it is difficult to predict with certainty how many sessions are required and how much of the tattoo will be removed. If it's a pure black colour, usually 1-3 sessions is all that is required.
After the procedure, the skin scabs up and will heal without any scarring after abt 1 week. The tattoo will continue to fade for the next 3 months. The next session is 3 months later. Cost per session for such procedure is about RM500. Please contact me for quotes or pm Patrick - Doc

Yes, I do perform punch excision. This procedure is good for isolated ice-pick scars. Usually can't do more than 5 in one go. If multiple ice-pick scars - this procedure is not feasible (not enough skin to cut out!) - prefer subcision and/or needle abrasion. - Doc

Thanks for your reply.-- I didnt went for peel-- or else as per your mail I would have filed a law suit :)

I wanted to ask one more thing. What is Photofacial. Can this be done at a gap of a week --as I am also taking Erbium Yag laser.

"Photofacial is face rejuvenation by broad spectrum light, or more popularly known as Intense Pulsed Light or IPL. It is best to leave a gap of 2-3 weeks in between ablative procedures. e.g. Erbium Yag is considered ablative because it removes a few layers of skin. It is possible to have clear bright complexion but you need to stop hopping from one clinic to another or you will get burnt in the process, both physically and financially! Just stay with one doctor you can trust." - Doc

I found out that the cost of microdermabrasion is about RM120 per session or Rm600 for 6 sessions. As for Dr Lim's contact, I trust you have received her contact? Rgds.

Hi.. I'm new to this forum and the service provided by Dr Lim seems promising. For your info, i have pimples mark ( discolouration left by pimples) for quite some time oredi and have tried many many whitening products but it doesn't work and would left me pimples. Wonder if IPL or microdemabrasion help? righ after microdemabrasion being done, will i have bruises all those? how long will it goes off?

btw, can i have Dr's lim add and contact number?

Thanks!

patrick

Doc says IPL helps a lot - reduces it abt 50%, subsequently chemical peeling or gentler home-use peeling creams would fade it further. Microdermabrasion done gradually does not cause bruising or downtime.

As for her contact, I have sent you by private mail - Patrick

Summer, Doc says "Deep acne cars should be treated with subcision, needleabrasion, dermotoxin. Can consider microdermabrasion for more superficial scars." Trust that helps.

I have sent you directly her contact.

Doc subtlely advices "Side-effects are pretty self-explanatory. This person has to make an informed decision about whether to take the drug. Weigh up pros & cons himself/herself."

I believe it is the medical practice not to give advice on top of another doctor's advice. You have obviously done some research on the subject and should be able to make an intelligent decision on the matter. If you still wish to pursue the matter further, I could provide you the doc's contact for follow up. But I believe you should be able to make a decision on your own here since you already have all the facts.

I've read the Peak magazine recently and they have a column on skin cosmetic. One of the method is through mesolift treatment using needle. But according to other mesotheraphy websites, mesolift can also be done needleless. Is this true? How effective is this method compared to the one using needle. I also notice that most of the cosmetic medical practioner from malaysia uses needle to do mesolift.

Hi sorry to have kept you waiting for so long. Just got back.

Doc says" It's an appealing procedure - harvesting your own tissue to graft back into one's own skin. Don't know about duration of effect - probably something like fat grafts .Yes, it's certainly longer than fillers like Restylane but more complicated procedure - need to harvest from another site before injecting into wrinkles - adds to cost & side-effects. Cannot replace Botox."

Trust that answers you!

There have been so many private mails on botox etc, I asked the good doc to do a brief write up for the info of those interested. Thanks doc!

"I know there are many of you who are absolutely terrified of Botox injections given the bad press that it is sometimes given. However, Botox is actually very safe if administered judiciously by trained doctors. The trend is to use more diluted formulations and newer techniques of injection which all lead to much safer administration of Botox without side-effects such as droopy eyelids.

Sometimes, only light-based or laser treatments alone are not sufficient to eradicate wrinkles. A study publised in Dermatologic Surgery in March 2004 showed superior results in reduction of wrinkles, sunspots, pore size, skin texture in patients treated with both intense pulsed light (IPL) and Botox compared with IPL alone.
Another study in 2003, published in Dermatologic Surgery showed combination of Botox and hyaluronic acid filler doubled the effectiveness of filler injection alone for deep wrinkles.

Botox has traditionally been used to reduce
- frown lines between the eyebrows
- horizontal forehead lines
- crows' feet

Botox can also be used for: (NEW APPLICATIONS!)

- pore size reduction
- eyebrow reshaping
- reducing eyebags (if it caused by hypertrophied muscles)
- reducing lines under eye
- reducing bunny lines (between eyes & nose)
- reducing nasal flare
- softening laugh lines
- reducing lines around lips
- lifting up droopy corners of lips
- reducing a popply chin
- softening horizontal neck lines
- facial slimming, calf slimming
- reducing sweating on palms & armpits

For those interested, Doc will make a special offter till May 31st.

Please don't hesitate to call or email if you have further questions. Advanced bookings are required for Botox injections. Thankyou."

Trust you all find this little write up useful. Rgds.

Mesotherapy is merely the method of delivering active substances through the skin, traditionally using very fine needles injecting stuff at various depths into th eskin , up to the fat layer of skin to treat cellulite. "Virtual mesotherapy" i.e. no needles, instead uses an electrical gadget to transport active substances thru skin. I have such a transdermal machine - it is quite effective. It has about 70% efficacy of needling thru the skin. Itis good for superficial wrinkles. But cannot penetrate deeper than dermal layer. - Doc

Can you please elaborate?
I'm not sure what you mean by needling - mesolift kind of needling? or just plain needleabrasion without using active substances?

Prices can vary between 150 -400 per session depending on active substances. Downtime depends on depth. YEs, improvements after every session. - Doc

I've had needleabrasion with Dr. Lim several times for acne scarring ( ice picks, rolling scars ) and have gotten very good results. They're not 100% gone but the scars are a lot "softer" and the edges not as sharp. I don't have deep ice picks though. My scars are mostly deepish big pores and several rolling scars. I usually start with a microdermabrasion first and then the needleabrasion.

During the needleabrasion, she applies a numbing cream on your face for 30 minutes. Then using a needling tool, she'll go over your face targeting the scarred areas. The sensation is slightly painful/moderate depending on the person. For me, the slight discomfort is worth it after seeing the results. After the needling, the areas needled are reddish like you have a pimple there, but not so bad that you can't walk back to your car. I usually go shopping after my session as I'm from out of town and take the opportunity to do my shopping in KL. The next day, the area looks worse as the scabs get darker so I stay at home. After 3-5 days, my face is back to normal. As for aftercare, other than the anti-bacterial cream that Dr. Lim will give you, I sometimes use Vitamin C cream after all the scabs come off. Not sure if it does anything though.

I plan on continuing my needleabrasions with Dr. Lim every couple of months until I'm completely satisfied. In my opinion, she is one of the best doctors I've seen as she is really down to earth and straightforward. She never seems rushed and really takes the time to go through each problem. I've been to a well known beauty clinic in KL and all they do is try to push their products on you or sometimes comment on how your skin can be improved by doing this or that treatment.

Hope this helps anyone who's planning to do something about their scarring. It's minimally invasive, not much downtime and affordable.

Hi,

My name is crys and i stumbled upon this thread by pure coincidence but ended up registering myself straight away after i finished reading all the posts including those as old in 2003 because i believe it might be able to help me.

You see, I've never had any problems with my skin before, but it started changing a year ago and i had to resort to going for facials often almost everyweek to prevent it from aggravating. It did subside after i completely changed my skincare but my skin was still very much dependent on the facials becoz it was very unstable even if i miss one week of treatment.

then came late last year, i left overseas for my studies, and my skin completely went chaos and it left me plagued by serious acne problems that got me really depressed with the usual withdrawal symptoms.
It has been a hard time like most of us who's plagued by acne i trust, and it continued on for few months until my sister got me to change into a completely new set of skincare again.

Miraculously, that skincare worked for me, very well indeed that my acne dimished slowly but surely, and now almost 6 months into using it, i can safely say that 90% of my face is acne free save for the occasional pimple or two.

But like any other post-acne case, i'm left with some scars and red-spots to remind me of my depressed days, which i'm still waiting patiently to fade. During my course, i've educated myself on all the cures and preventions but then again, no one way works for everybody, and after reading this thread, I am intrigued like everyone else, but skincare services are really sensitive issue especially if it doesn't come cheap as well.

There's so many methods and places out there providing hopes but do they all guarantee tried and proven results? Because I am indeed interested in seeing Dr. Lim as well hoping for some solutions but seeing that there's this super-long thread dedicated just for that, does anyone who has been there already have any tried and proven story to share? If you do, please do share it around Because I think in the end that's what we are all looking for. A solution that actually works.

Hoping there's still hope.

Can i kindly get the contact details for Dr. Lim please? Thanks.

I have a keloid scarring at my chest area and its a bit reddish now. I have heard of steroid injections and IPL for keloid scar treatment. I just want to find out if this is a proper treatment ? How efficient is the IPL in restoring skin colour ? How much does an IPL sessions cost and how much does it cost for steroid injections for one session ? Are there any other more suitable treatment than these ?

By the way, could you please send me the contact and address of Dr.Lim's clinic. Thanks.

"The best treatments I find for keloid scars are still silicone plaster which one can buy in the pharmacy (works best applied early in the scarring process) combined with steroid injections.
Steroid injs cost RM80-150 depending on size & number of keloids.

As for IPL, I find some lightening of the redness, but takes 2-3 sessions, even so, one should only expect abt 50% lightening (if you get more, it's a bonus). Best laser is pulsed dye laser, not IPL for decreasing the redness. I have IPL but not the pulsed dye laser - don't know who in Malaysia has it." - Doc

It seems like the only option I have is IPL to reduce the redness. How much does it cost for an IPL sessions then ? I got an advice from a doctor to have 6 steriod injections and 6 IPL sessions. Do you think the IPL sessions are too much for a 2cm to 3cm scarring ? Furthermore it is not very much elevated.

By the way, does the silicone plaster helps in reducing redness and for old scars more than 3 years as it is still growing or does it only flatten the keloid. Thanks.

IPL cost persession is RM100 -need abt 3 sessions to reduce redness. It's not much good for reducing the hypertrophic (elevated) bit.

Silicone plaster is supposed to do both and yes, supposed to be good for old scars too but response varies.

As for steroid injections - the number of injections required varies depending on how active the keloid is. There are some stubborn ones which regrow despite multiple sessions and there are some which flatten out completely (and not regrow) after just 1-2 sessions. It may therefore be more prudent not to buy a "package of 6 sessions for both" when one may not need all 6 sessions. Conversely, 6 sessions of steroid injections may not be enough to control the regrowth of the keloid.

Treating keloids is not like rejuvenating the face where one needs 5-6 sessions of treatments (good to commit a client to a package here because it takes that number of sessions to get a good result and it doesn't need more than 6). - Doc

I stumbled upon this quite accidentally as I am searching for some professional advice regarding acne scars, pigmentation and I am thinking about doing IPL.

I have acne scars, pigmentation and a shallow complexion, however I am not too sure about what sort of treatment I could do and the price of the treatment as well.

Dr. Lim sounds like a professional and caring doctor thus I would like to sought for her advice regarding the condition of my skin and the treatment available as well.

Our Doc will be out of town on June 19th -20th (Mon & Tue) so she will not be taking appointments on those days. She would only be back to work on Wed June 21st. This also mean any questions posted here will not be answered during those few days.

Simultaneously, she has email to address some questions which she has been asked very often. Here are some answers to queries many have raised and which may be of interest to you:

Question: Why does the price of IPL vary so much between beauty salons &
also amongst doctors?

Answer: We have been given ceiling prices for most medical procedures by
the Ministry of Health. The recommended charge for one session
full face IPL is RM800. But you are right the price range is
tremendous. From RM1300 (Puan Sri in Gleneagles is paying this
price) to RM150 (Ah Soh in a Klang beauty salon paying this price).

The wide variation is due to many factors:

a) the quality of the machine - if you get treated by a low end made in China
IPL costing RM30,000, don't expect to get the same results with a made in
USA machine costing upwards of RM300,000

b) location of salon or clinic

c) how much the beautician or doctor wants to charge

d) extras thrown in e.g. shoulder massage

So, do the treatment in a place you feel comfortable with and with a person you feel comfortable with and at a price you are comfortable with. Like the Chinese saying goes, you get what you pay for.

Oh one more thing Patrick,

I have tried IPL before about 3-4 sessions last year as I have diffuse facial redness (very diffuse telangiectasia) on certain areas of my face. Previously I consulted one laser doc who told me my capillaries are too small for laser to destroy and I would be wasting my money.

I tried IPL and found that the redness did improve, about 30 -40 percent. Since as I get older, I find the redness 'spreads' I would like to treat this redness further.

The IPL machine used was ELITE brand which according to the palce I went, is a doctor's standard machine. I tried the red light and yellow light ones.

Do you think if I went for more sessions, my redness can improve? The IPL person I go to says that it is not likely. She has suggested that I go to a doctor for laser.

Does pulsed dye laser address diffuse telangiectasia?

Hope you can help with my queries. Thank you very very much!

Appreciate your help, Patrick

Hi. I would like to obtain some info regarding scars removal on legs.

I always have repeating wart growth on both my knees.
After applying cream for the treatment, there are very obvious scars that stay on my knees and i am very concern about that.
Besides that i also got many small spots cause by mosquito bites and injury on my legs.

Early last year i went to see a plastic surgeon and all he prescribed me was only scar removal cream (MEDERMA) and it is taking really long time to remove the scars.
I am eager to know what other ways that can help me to get rid of the scars faster.
I would also like to know the approximate cost of the scar removal treatment and any further relevant information.

Thank you.

Does pulsed dye laser address diffuse telangiectasiM

Sounds like you have rosacea. Whether an IPL can treat telangiectasia depends on the quality and wavelengths of the IPL machine. ELITE is not so specific therefore limited effects on telangiectasia. Pulsed dye laser is perfect for vascular treatment. Please call me to set up an appointment for FPL - very specific for telangiectasia - Doc

[QUOTE=ashley]Hi.

Ashley,

This kind of post-inflammatory pigmentation is best treated with a fruit acid peeling lotion applied daily. Can be combined with a hydroquinone lightener for best results. - this combination gives best results. No laser or machine can treat this problem if that's what you're looking for - laser is also another "injury" which can cause more problems, as healing on legs is poorer than on the face - Doc

I am interested to seek Dr Lim's consultation for IPL. Can you pm me her contacts and charges persession? Does Dr. Lim offer botox treatment for face(jaw) contouring? If so, how much?
Maya

Charges for IPL depends on how many shots are fired. Whole face cost per session is RM500 (or RM1200 for 3 sessions). If you only want to treat certain areas (e.g. pigmented spots or facial capillaries) then you will be charged proportionately less. For greater details, I suggest you contact the doctor.

And yes, the doctor also offers Botox for jaw contouring. Cost is RM1000 per session.

Hi,

I have a 13 year old who will be reaching puberty soon, I need some advice on how to prevent or take necessary precautions before acne/pimples starts appearing. Both with oral and external medications.
There is a strong possibility he might suffer from this condition since I have been having breakouts ever since I was a teenager till now.
Appreciate your help. Thank you.

Microdermabrasion uses a diamond surface or crystals ejected under pressure to abrade the surface of skin - more for superficial scars. Needleabrasion is using a needle point to make multiple pricks into skin good for deeper scars. Microderma removes blackheads but both are not good for inflammatory acne - chemical peel here better - Doc

Can't start drug treatment until acne appears - treat early when it starts appearing. Why suffer possible side-effects of drugs when you don't have a medical condition?

Keep him on healthy diet - i.e. lots of water, veges, fruits. Cut down sweets, junk food, etc. - Doc

Hi, I'm rather new to the forums, but this thread caught my eye. There's a couple of things I'd like to know, namely:

1) What are the approximate costs for electrolysis, laser and IPL hair removal?
2) Approximately how many sessions are required for each treatment?
3) Which is the most effective?
4) Side effects and other relevant information.

I'm quite tan, and I've read that the melanin in my skin may interfere with electrolysis and laser hair removal. I'd also like to know where the clinic is, and how I may get in touch with Dr. Lim. Please e-mail me at gi_nyah@yahoo.com.

Thank you.

In respond to your questions above, the doctor says:

1) Electrolysis can be expensive as they do strand by strand. Rm100 per hour or so, covering small area, very time consuming .Laser & IPL hair removal about same cost - depends on size of surface area. e.g. armpits would be approx Rm1200 for 4 sessions

2) Averagely, 4-6 sessions for total hair removal. Very variable - depends on many factors, e.g. male v female, thickness, density, hormonal balance....

3) Laser or IPL? Both equally effective (provided choose right laser and
appropriate IPL machine - layperson won't know)

4) Electrolysis - S/E mainly infection. Laser or IPL - skin burns if inappropriate power level used. Tanned skin use lower power - again - operator dependent - need to go to someone trained to use machine.

Finally, more melanin means more prone to post -inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Trust that answer your questions!

Very often the problem could be right within our house...bed bugs and dust mites! Best is to do your own diagnosis. When you say living here...you mean in the same house? Or in Malaysia? Have you been sleeping on the same mattress? Is your house/room carpeted? How often do you vacuum your mattress, carpets etc? Do try to locate the cause(s) of your problem.

When you visit the docs and clinics, what they do is treat your itch. But the cause(s) have not been tackled. So you are back to square one!

Since born till 12years ago, I been “normal” never face any allergy. Now strictly no prawn, crab, can expose to long in the sun, can’t do lots of housework (hooooray!!) can’t sweat, etc

There have been some members requesting for info regarding treatment of cellulite. Well, our good doc has done a brief write up below which you may find useful:

CARBOMED is a CE approved medical device for treating cellulite, body contouring and stretchmarks.

Plastic surgeons in Italy have done studies to prove its effectiveness in reducing fat accumulation and improving skin elasticity or skin irregularities after liposuction.

Carbon dioxide gas is slowly infused into the fat layer via a very small needle. No anaesthetic is required. Total time per area takes approximately 30 minutes. Minor side-effects include minor discomfort, crepitus (crackling sensation under the skin) and bruising. Side-effects usually disappear in 1-2 days.

Areas that can be treated include chin, arms, abdomen, back, thighs and calves. 4-6 sessions are required to see appreciable reduction in circumference. Usually a total of 12 sessions are needed, even up to 20 sessions for very fat areas. Sessions are spaced out once or twice a week.

Treatments can be combined with radiofrequency for better and faster results. And of course, a sensible diet and exercise are important aspects of weight control.

Hi Patrick and Dr Lim,

I am new here. I have read through the posts and everything sounds positive so far. I have been overseas for the past few years and eversince then my skin has been prone to break outs(nothing serious) with the change of weather.

When I arrived back in Malaysia a year ago the breakouts occured again. So I consulted a very famous dermatologist who came very highly-recommended and she prescribed me with a neo strata cleanser and some un-identifiable liquids in amber bottles to apply to my skin.

After a few weeks of application I was horrified to see the disastrous results. My skin was peeling and cracking, I started developing fine lines on my forehead (which never happened before) and my whole chin area and the underside discoloured to a dark brown with many raised bumps.

I stopped using the products immediately but the damage has been done. It has been 6 months since that incident. My skin has improved considerably and it is considered normal skin (not dry, not oily).

But I noticed that my skin now scars everytime I get a blemish (this has never happened before treatment). I also have loads of underground bumps or milia under my skin (can't be treated with facial as it is not whiteheads). Discolouration and scarring on my cheeks and chin. And fine lines on my forehead (I'm only 23) :(

Please could you reccommend the best course of treatment. I am praying that it is not too expensive as I have just started work but I am willing to pay for results.

Ps: Patrick could you please pm me Dr Lim contact details and any other dermatologists who could assist me. My e-mail is jing.wjh@gmail.com

I would greatly appreciate all the advice and help I could get at this point. I am in total despair and suffer from low self esteem due to my skin problems...

Jinxy,
The doc can only make very general comments here as she hasnt seen in person. I am sure you would appreciate that.

"It sounds like your skin is very sensitive and peeled too much due to the "unidentifiable liquids in amber bottles". I'm not saying that wrong things were prescribed - what I'm saying is that your skin is too sensitive to accept standard acne treatment and you may have applied too much leading to a "chemical burn" effect. Most acne treatments cause some degree of peeling ( a desirable end point actually) but it becomes undesirable when it is overdone and the skin is injured.

I'm not sure that your current scarring after blemishes can be attributed to the overpeeling you experienced. One usually gets discolouration and scarring from inflammatory acne which becomes cystic. i.e. the more severe the acne, the more likely long-term scars will be left behind.

Your problems can be solved but one needs to take a slower, gentler approach. If you do come to see me, please bring along all the stuff you've previously used and are currently using (identifiable or not!) - then I can match treatment to your skin tolerability."

Jinxi, I am no doctor but if I may add another comment. Sometimes patients too have allergy to certain medications and it is just not possible for doctors to know what we could be allergic to. Sometimes even we ourselves do not know! That's why when using or consuming new medication/prescription, it's always best to be a bit cautious to see if we are allergic to them. Just a thought if that might have been the cause of your problem. - Regards, Patrick

Just to share with you that our doctor has now acquired a new handpiece for Intense Pulsed Light hair removal. This new equipment is safe to perform even on dark-skinned individuals. It is also less painful as compared to the older handpiece. With this new handpiece, she is now offering a special deal for our community members for the month of August.

Sorry but the Doc doesn't have fraxel laser. Similar results with needling done with dermaroller (cost extra RM500) or free-hand (no extra cost). Procedure cost RM200 - anaesthetic creams post-care creams etc all inclusive. If more information is required, suggest you contact the Doc. - Patrick

Hi Happy. Here's the Doc's reply:

No one can guarantee complete hair removal because if you have a condition like for example, polycystic ovaries, your overactive hormones will make you more hairy than normal and hair can regrow. But I do offer a 2 year hair removal package for RM1800 for armpits i.e. unlimited sessions to remove armpit hair within that 2 year period. Hope that answers your question.

You cannot pm. You have to send an email and the attachment. For attachment, you have to 2 choices:

1. Take a normal analogue photo, then scan it into jpeg format and attach to your email

or 2. Take a picture with a digital camera and upload it into your pc. Then attach it to your email.

If still not clear, suggest you consult a friend who is familiar with IT.

Wilson, different experts will have differing opinions and each may not necessarily be the best or most correct. But it is always given to the best of their knowledge. So I trust you will take doctors' opinion in that context.

With that in mind, I post here the doctor's respond to your question:

Laser resurfacing price varies from RM350 to RM3800 per session depending on which laser you use. Even if a high end laser like Fraxel is used (a proper treatment costs RM3800 i.e. USD 1000) , a doctor can give you inferior results by using less energy and cheaper consumables (hence you have to go back twice). Cheaper lasers don't give very obvious results, you're right.
I can't tell you if RM500 is a reasonable price because I don't know what laser you are referring to - Fraxel? Smoothbeam? Cooltouch? LP NdYag? ????

A fair result would be 50-60% improvement. 85-90% improvement would be an exaggeration unless you have VERY superficial scars.

I hope this answers your questions. - Doc.

Thanks doc. Hope that helps, Wilson - Patrick

Thanks alot Patrick.

Hi there! Recently found this thread, and I'm very glad to see there's microdermabrasion treatment available in Malaysia. I have acne scars on my face, back and chest ... but they are more like flat, smooth and small discolorations. Can microdermabrasion completely remove these discolorations? I am also interested in lightening darker skin, especially on my underarms, and hair removal.

Please do PM me the doctor's email address and contact details. I appreciate it. Thanks! :)

Microderma can completely remove acne discolourations but it takes multiple sessions, abt 10 or so. Best combined with a fruit acid peeling lotion to be applied daily.
Hair removal of underarms can also lighten up the discolouration at the same time. Please call if you want more info. - Doc

As I expected, Doc said "Chickenpox scar is usually a depressed scar or a discoloured one.Same treatment as in acne scars."

So please read the earlier posting by our Doc in this thread. Alternatively, I suggest you make appointment for the Doc to take a look at your scar.

I've heard that a cream called Mederma is a good scar remover, anyone tried it with success?

monty
13-09-2006, 12:08 AM
I've tried mederma on a raised keloid scar (BCG scar on arm) and been using it for the past month. So far the scar looks maybe 10% better but that could be due to a steroid injection or from silicone sheets I've used on it prior to Mederma. My scar is more than 15 years and I've heard it works better on newer scars. I've also heard that it may be more beneficial for post acne scars that aren't pitted but just red marks.

With how cheap mederma is over here, it's worth a try. I've bought in the US before for almost $30 us dollars and over it's only around RM 30 at watsons.

You're welcome Patrick! It's my pleasure to provide some reviews on the procedures or creams I have used in the past. When I joined the group, I read through all the pages and gained a lot of information from other forumers. It would be great if other forumers would also post their reviews.

I had moderate acne scars before and have tried many procedures but without very good results. Recently a pharmacist at watsons recommended a cream called Skinoren and I really like it. I have combination skin with huge pores. It is used to control breakouts and not as drying as Retin-A or Renova and seems to suit my skin. Combined with the needling and microdermabrasion, my scars seem to have improved a lot lately. If Dr. Lim has heard of this Skinoren cream, I would love to hear what she thinks of it.

This is just my opinion. I wouldn't recommend trying an over the counter cream without verifying if it suits your skin as you may cause more harm than good especially if you have very sensitive skin and the product is drying or harsh. I used to go crazy with tretinoin creams and when I saw that it worked good with a little cream, I thought it would work better if I put it on several times a day and double the amount. I don't know for sure but I think it weakened my skin too much and caused me to scar. So make sure that you follow the instructions carefully and don't go overboard.

You are absolutely correct. The was our original objective. To get forumers to come share their experiences etc. Our Doctor in the "house" is more for those who seriously need professional "consultancy" and assistance.

As for the Skinoren cream, normally docs will normally adopt a neutral stance, so I dont want to pose the question. Cream, medications etc can be very personal and subjective. Further, one's condition may dictate different treatment and product. Just like antibiotics. There is no one brand to suit all.

Can I check with the doctor about chemical peel?

I'm using a range of product called Dermalite for my freckles. It's quite good, as my freckles decreased a lot.
However, maybe due to sun exposure, the freckles are back again.

Can I check how long should I let my face/skin rest before I use the products again? - anonymous

patrick
15-09-2006, 03:38 PM
Doc says "Freckles always recur after sun exposure because UV exposure IS the cause of freckles.

Peeling the face can be done on a regular basis provided the face can tolerate it i.e. no pain or sensitivity."

the instructions mentioned that for new scars, it takes about 8 weeks. and for existing scars, it takes about 3-6 months.

i would like to ask the doc, how do old does the scar has to be, to differentiate new and existing?

Our Doc's definition of scars: "New scars are ones which have just healed i.e. wound recently closed."

I guess that means scars which have healed and closed for a few months can be considered old scars!

I am going thru laser resurfacing treatment and I am rather disappointed so far. it doesn't cost me little, and I have already done 4 treament so far. And I frankly don't see any difference. I am left with 2 more treatments, I don't think I can get anything out of the two more left if 4 does nothing. Is Dr. Lim here able to give me some light on this issue? I thought I am suppose to see improvements on 1st treatment itself. To be fair maybe there is slight improvement, but it is so little till not even a single soul notice it, and my father just asked me lately of why didn't I take care of my skin, they don't know I went for the laser. If my dad can ask me that, it really means, nothing is happening. Please advise, under severe depression because of this.

Thank you for sharing your experience with our Forumers here.

I too used to sneeze every morning until I started taking Vit C consistently. Then, I also had the problem of mouth ulcers very often. solved that problem with B complex.

I reckon there are many health problems that could be prevented if we all knew how to take better care of ourselves. And dont forget regular exercise which I feel is THE single most important factor to good health.

Wilson, can you please provide more details on the kind of laser you are being treated with? Usually laser resurfacing means CO2 or Erbium-Yag laser but results and downtime ARE noticeable! Doc suspects you may not be undergoing resurfacing in the true sense.

Yup, sounds like rosacea. If there is an acne component, creams & oral meds will help. If it is just flushing then, IPL will help. - Doc

Dermabrasion leaves your skin raw and bleeding - so, no, it's not done on Asian skin. Microderma is the micro version i.e. gentle, just removes upper layer dead skin. - Doc

Hi Patrick,

My sister has really bad acne and her menstrual cycle has recently become more erratic. Now her pimples are appearing at the base of her jawline (which has never happened before) and she fears that it will spread even further than that. I'd really like to know Dr. Lim's address and phone number to see if any help can be done. Thanks

It is for the initial brief consultation. Assuming you want her to take a look at your condition and then to provide you the options. Then you decide you needed time to think about it. She wont be charging you for that pre-consultation. Now....isnt that free? How can she build in the cost IF you decide not to get any treatment! Got the idea? I read your post in the forum saying that you have a new machines in your clinic that can remove leg veins.

Do you mean that it can treat "varisoce veins"? I am suffering from this unsightful illness on my legs, it would like to seek treatment and advice from professional.

Do you mind explain it further? Such as the treatment, price, side-effect and etc. - Anonymous

Doc says "It removes flat veins up to 1.5 mm in diameter, not "varcose veins:" (look like worms). Perfectly safe. Price - 50% discount now for 2 weeks. i.e. both legs usually RM1K, now RM500. Only 1 session required"

Hi adrienne and indcisive, I forwarded the address to you as received from Patrick. Hope he doesn't mind me doing that. E-mail address needed to forward the map attachment but I suggest waiting for Patrick if privacy is an issue. Hope I helped.

Suggest you have a chat with Dr Lim on costing. Doubt she could just give you a straight x$. Anyway, wont cost you anything to have a chat with her.
Rgds.

Depends on how many layers of skin you want to remove. Usually abt 15-20 mins but longer if you add on mask etc - Doc
