I kicked a corner and my toe nail split right down vertically in half :( Do I need to see a doctor or just leave it and let it grow back. Does it grow back? I'm sure we all had our share of nail injuries. Please share.

Better go see a doctor or a podiatrist (foot doctor) ... just in case

normally the doctor will remove the toe nail immediately...
but if you can take care of the hygiene and don't mind walking around with a half fell toe nail, the new nail will slowly grow back and the severely damaged nail will drop out by itself in 3~4 months time (my experience).

Yes, it does grow back. :)
Kid dropped something and hit the big toe. Part of the Nail eventually turned black and dropped. Went to the doctor and was prescribed the purple pink solution (potassium?). Dilute and soak daily which helped the healing very quickly.
Nail looked just as perfect as before. :)

i remember my daughter having ingrown toenails removed from both big toes, her screams could be heard for miles as he injected the anesthetic, then she still screamed again when he removed the toenails.

So i thought, silly doctor, why not just pull the nails out without anesthetic?
Then only need to scream once instead of twice

How deep/long is the split??

I have the same misfortune with my toenail some time back (kicked the side of the staircase!) and my buddy came and "super glued" the toenail back in place while it outgrew the split.... mebbe you could check with your doctor on this 'method'....

ps: It worked for me though,... although the initial miniscule drop of super glue BURNED LIKE HELL for a short while.... :o

In my case, I had an unfortunate accident when moving furniture which caused my whole big toe nail to be accidentally knocked off. To my surprise, when it finally grow back, it was still an ingrowing toe nail!! How does removing the toe nail stop it? Mine certainly did not.

I read somewhere that we can use nail polish. Maybe I'll try that method first.

The simple answer it that it does not. The new nail would grow back the same (i.e. ingrowing). You need to remove part of the "root". That would make the new nail narrower and thereby not cut into the flesh anymore. There is no need to remove the entire nail.

The last little toenail (the "pinky") on my right foot is split
- the right margin, about 1 mm, is growing out separately
from the rest of the nail, for the last several years.

Initially, I think when it first started splitting a few years ago,
that split edge became caught in the right corner and became
ingrown. So I went to Dr Anantha, a surgeon at Sentosa Medical
Center in Ipoh Road, who used his pliers to pull out the whole of
the split edge. He said the new nail should grow out as a single
piece again.

It hasn't, and is still split to this day. Sometimes I use a file
to trim the corner and file the split margin flatter, so it is not so
obvious and hopefully does not get caught in the corner and
become ingrown again.

These two weeks, it seems to be even more split than before.
I tried using moisturizers like coconut oil, but doesn't seem
to work.

Maybe I'll get one of those scar softening creams like Mederma
or Hirudoid to see if it helps.

for the pinky, my nails too are splited, both sides.
I can't remember when it started but it look like its born like that naturally...
not really caused any trouble, I trim them like other toenails and some time file them to smooth the surface...
