1. Handphone is a neccessity though not the most expensive one
2. Laptop is part and parcel of life
3. Car is no longer a luxury with our public transport system and motorbike is too risky. But no need "a brand new imported car lah"
;)

You sure not??? you said NOT RICH??? Then why buy....

Pelepasan cukai pendapatan perhaps?
Or betta yet... to dispose of illegal kickbacks or payoffs

Seriously speaking, buying these 'essentials (in advance) for the kids would only spoil them rotten as they would not know the value and meaning of hard earned money... but then again, if the parents chooses to spoil their kids... it their money ma...

I would love to give examples of perhaps politicians who are "not rich" but can afford these luxuries (and more ) but I better not... nanti Chang will SELL me instead... :p :D

Frankly speaking, instead of an imported car, I would rather pay d/p on an apartment near LRT or his workplace. Installment is borned by him of course since papa is not rich

Define expensive. RM500-1K also expensive considering parents aren't from rich family. Kepping up with the Joneses?.....nurturing good, strong self esteem is priceless!....your call..

2. Parents buy laptop to their child whom is still in college?

Yes please. Less than 1K oso got from popular brands and by interest-free installments too, if you like...

3. Parents buy brand new imported car to their child whom just found first job?

First do an honest evaluation of your child's driving standards. I've got no problem if he/she got killed in an accident (sorry for being blunt and morbid). It is when he/she got maimed or killed someone else, that I am more concerned with. Myvi would be a more prudent choice, if you wish to purchase one. And for goodness sake, don't be taken in by marketing talk of more than 5 years loans...!

IMHO

1.) Basic Nokia - less than RM100 will do - prepaid - pay his own bill.
2.) Get him a few THUMBDRIVEs and go use the college computer lab PCs !!
3.) This one - think SAFETY - ABS, airbags - MyVi (second hand)

Ask him to find a job overseas – Singapore, Shanghai, Hk…..

No need to buy car, handphone and laptop is cheap relative to income.

What happen to the "not rich" parent after buying all this stuffs to their children? They can't survive? Have to secure loan? Mortgage their house?

If the "not rich" parent still affortable for all this, then what is the problem?

Some parents buy them a house in addition to all the above. This is called progress. ;)

In that case. who needs education to make a living anyway....
I pad with imported car with high rise condo where i can i phone my faecbook buddies to party with me all night long in the swimming pool where I can Skype my friends who couldnt make it here.
All under the courtesy of progressive parenting who says the degree earned at the college is to be framed on the main hall as a decorative ornament. :p

It would be foolish to buy something that one cannot afford.

But it's hard to put a price on the love for your children.

Old aged guidance from the wiseman - Give me a fish - I eat for a day, teach me how to fish, I eat the rest of my life. ;)

Old Mean Chef guidance to the young man - Fry you a fish , you eat fried fish, teach you how to cook and sliced fishes - you/ll be eating Shashimi, Baked Fish 2 Rock, Fish 2 Roll, Triplex Fishes Steamed Fish with wolfberries and ginger infused olive oil, Tuxedo Fish, and the list goes on ....... :D

Regarding the hp.....I do not agree with buying a new hp for the kid. When my nephew wanted a new funky hp, he had to save up his own money to buy it himself. (It took him almost a year!) My brother only agreed to partly pay for his monthly pre-paid.

As for lap-top. Nowadays especially for those studying, its become a must.

As for car, kids nowadays are so pampered. Take a bus lah! That's what we all did.

An acquaintance was declared a bankrupt after trying to finance 2 kids who insisted must go to UK for studies. Both graduated and started working there but claimed that they have no money to help the poor father out. To me, the parents are sooo.. silly. But then again, they must have loved their children very much. One can't really judge but shake head at the situation. The kids are so spoilt, no filial compassion or appreciation at all! :(

It is a question of Parenting responsibility to ensure that the kids especially after 18 years old is guided to pay for his needs and wants.

My busboys in USA - from 16 years to 29 years, from high school to college kids paid for thier own handphones, laptops and cars. as for the college fees, they are taking federal loans to finance it. One even intended to join the marines and upon 2 years of service - he is qualified for free college fees. All these while, they are working in the restaurant which is considered even less glamorous than the dish washers. They had to clear the mess of the meals, wipe it, and set up tables while stacking the plates to glasses to the kitchen , run back to filled water when the guests are seated. All these upon waiters orders to stand down or heel and withstand the abuses from the Chefs and even nonsense from dishwashers! And these kids worked 2 days a week , one of them was staying in the center city penthhouse , while the other drove a brand new BMW on loan from his dad with emptied gas tank!

Here at USJ, I couldnt even hire a waiter as the Parents deemed it is no class or demeaning for thier kids to serve customers food and drinks. Spare the caning experience, spoilt the child. :(

IMHO
maybe parents nowadays dont want their kids to experience the hardship they endure. They wantred the best for their child… as they seems that they are more than capable to provide more!!!
It is the parents’ choice tho…. But if it is from a not-well-to-do family…. Pity the parents lerr ….

The best education the parents can give is GUIDANCE , not GIFTS just like the degrees earns from thier colleges - Not just the glamorous title frame degree of PhD or Dr but the knowledge of how to diagnose, treat and prescribe accordingly with the knowledge they gained from their lectures and internships.
Just imagine what sort of education the kids learnt in respect of responsibilities where they forsake and neglect thier own bankrupt Dad? If you are the Boss, would you employ them and entrusted them as an accountant and a manager based on thier paper qualifications and personal accountability?

IMHO, all the 3 I-tems - like I-phone I-pad I-(mported) car are preventing the children to value further education in a true sense.
