I thought they only did that in China. The process to make it is very time consuming. Dont know if it would be worthwhile to do that here because labour costs are not cheap.

i wonder would they be sending for a chemistry testing, which should reveal a better perspective to the news.

Any reason to produce fake eggs?

Is it something similar concept to that of vegetarian meat?

This may be a harsh statement but I have personally resolved to avoid all food made (risk of artificial product) and grown (risk of chemicals and heavy pesticide levels) in China. Can't trust the mainland Chinese entrepreneurs ever since their melamine venture (and I read that they haven't even bothered to stop adding melamine to milk products after the discovery)

Sounds like you will not travel to China, and if you do likely you have to bring along all food and drinks required for the trip…

let us not belittle our neighbours with the little knowledge of history that we have learnt. Not everyone was a convict in the past and that statement suggest inheritance of bad genes ... totally unacceptable and insensitive. Also breaks our rules in the Forum

kwchang,
Above is the comment from you on one of my posts in other thread…

Surprisingly, I found a lot of similarities of the above comment (in blue font) with the quoted post and hope you don’t mind I borrowed it (with slight modification) to comment you…

If you look at the intensive labor required to produce one egg, one would know that there's no way a fake egg could cost less in production than just buying the real hen eggs...and exporting and storage from China will was also incur high cost

Hahaha .... I wish it WERE that SIMPLE :p :D - it was mentioned in the newspaper article (see first post) that the yoke and the white are not "properly" separated - normal eggs, the yoke are held in a tight sphere by chalaza (whatever that is) ... ;)

Extracts below:

"When cracked, there was no sign of chalaza, the structure inside the egg that keeps the yolk in place.

“The fake egg white and yolk quickly mixed together, unlike that of real eggs,”

Interesting to note the chemicals listed ... wow ...

Extracts:

"The e-mail had claimed that fake eggs were full of chemicals, which could result in metabolism disorder, liver diseases and dementia. These were also said to be harmful to brain and nerve cells.

The chemicals used in the so-called “eggs” included glucolactone, benzoic acid, calcium chloride, cellulose, alum amino acid, food colouring, sodium alginate and gelatin.

According to some sources these eggs are manufactured by the millions for consumption to the poor third world countries but it managed to be smuggle into to Penang.

Not only PENANG, it is much closer to home than you think - I heard so many stories at school just now about "fake eggs" being found at SS15 market as well !!!!

One parent even told me, she saw, felt and touched one -she said if you shake it gently, you can feel that it is like "watery" sloshing inside.

Well, I shook my eggs at home, pretty solid eggs from LTK !! :D

There is only one stall selling eggs at the SS15 wet market. Surely they will not risk selling fake eggs here. Maybe those hawkers in night market will sell (hit and run) but I don't think the permanent fellas will.

I have no idea about SS15 markets and I really hope so ... you may be right that it may be the night market as the lady did not specify and since I don't patronise the SS15 markets or area - I have absolutely no idea except to note the method she described on how to "spot" a fake !! - SHAKE THE EGG & FEEL for the watery sloshing - if it feels "solid", should be ok.

Entrepreneurs in China are at it again!
Three children have died in north-west China from suspected poisoning after drinking milk from two local dairies, state media says.

Thirty-five others, mostly children, are being treated at hospitals in Gansu province, officials said.

An initial investigation showed that the victims were poisoned by nitrite, a chemical used in the curing of meat.

The two farms have been sealed off and an investigation is under way, Xinhua news agency reported.

... I suppose China takes the lead though... 'FAKE STEAKS'....well, the 'meat' real though, but 'glued' together to make them look like nice chunky prime cuts...
Sorry, this time, the use of "meat glue" is not a Chinese invention. It was initially done in Europe and when the EU allowed this to be done, the consumers in some north European countries protested.

The process uses thrombin, a protein (taken from cattle or pigs) which is found in blood. You know how blood clots when you have a cut? Well, thrombin is released and it is nature's way of closing the wound by "glueing" the cut skin together so it can heal. This is the same protein used (in powder form) to allow the small chunks of meat to bind together.

In a way, there is no danger because we are not exposed to some chemical but a natural protein found in blood. The issue with the west is that the nice piece of steak they eat is usually rare or medium rare. When you have chunks of meat joined together like that, the meat chunks were handled by hand and exposed to bacteria like salmonella... so the glued meat is contaminated inside. Eating such a rare steak will have the danger of getting food poisoning. If the steak is not from 'glued' pieces, there is no chance of food contamination because the internal part of an entire piece of meat is sterile unlike glued meat. As for Asian cooking, this is not of concern because everything is well cooked. The only concern now is whether the thrombin used is from pigs - then we have a halal issue on our hands.

Brother.. there are 2 stalls selling eggs lar, side by side only.

Hmmm... we can avoid buying fake eggs by paying more attention but what about those hawkers? They will just buy and cook, who knows those eggs can be fake and it's not their intention to cook those fake eggs! Arrrghh... what happen to our world?

Sometime back, we bought some eggs from one of the local hypermart, and the eggs have easily broken shells. When broken, the egg yolk easily break as if the yolk already broken or so it seems. Looks like 'sub-quality' eggs, although they are not fake eggs. Believe if we have fake eggs in our midst, they cud be detected by careful examination (hopefully), and then perhaps confirming wiz a half-boiled egg test. It will be scary and a nightmare if the fake eggs cud not be distinguished from genuine ones. Well, when that happens, will have to stop eating eggs altogether. :o With innovation and entrepreneural brains, am not discounting that this can happen in the future.

Perhaps, the day indistinguishable fake 'eggs' cud be literally manufactured in the factories, we will have to rear our own chicken in our own backyards to get our regular daily supplies reliably. :p Hope these factory-manufactured 'eggs' will not see the light of day. :D

Believe the 'fake eggs' have not reached the shores of this country as yet, that those eggs cud just be sub-quality ones, of which the hen might have been fed with low quality chicken feeds and hence produce sub-quality eggs, which is quite possible.

'Fake eggs' that are being 'manufactured' in China are experimental ones that have not been perfected to the extent they cannot be distinguished from the ordinary ones, and that they still need the manual process of 'making' them. Hence unprofitable and unsellable.

The Chinese in mainland China are just simply brilliant but subtle when it comes to innovation. They have not reached the stage where the eggs are 'equal' but may look alike in some characteristics, hence still in experimental stage. The day may come when the 'manufactured' ones become at par with the genuine ones (organically produced) to the extent it may takes an experienced hand to separate them apart. But before they reach the shores of this country, they must be able to withstand the tests of the local consumers.
