Wonder if anyone knows where to buy a grass trimmer, one that is similar to those used by the MPSJ contractors to trim the lawn?
Thanks.
I bought one from Carrefour. Also get to know that Macro once also selling it. BTW, Tesco Puchong also seen to have it.
The price is around RM 105 - RM 150.

Thanks CH. Just saw one for sale at Giant Shah Alam for around RM90. However of unknown brand. But features seems better than the B&D ones selling at Carrefour. Still undecided.... but have to get one soon as the garden is turning into a jungle already.

tohca,
the grass trimmer is solely meant for trimming. if the grass at your lawn is too thick and long, I'm afraid the grass trimmer you saw might not be ideal for the job. the grass trimmer will not be powerful enough to drive the motor and might get jammed if the grass are too thick and long.
you might need to get the bangla to cut the long and thick grass first and after that maintain your lawn with the grass trimmer.

Don't buy the cheapo ones. Anything got to do with motor, invest in the robust ones that are more reliable. It is not everyday that you are buying one. B & D is one of them. You should also look for light weight ones since you are going to hold it in your hand and the job is not a quickie one. Also, look for one that automatically dispense the nylon thread. I have the SPIN (RM 229.00), a manual type which I need to stop every now and then to do the threading. I lost rhythym and at times dampened my DIY spirit. But I am still happy with it as I have it with me for the last 5 years. I used it every 6 weeks in trimming my 20 ft x 20 ft lawn. By the way, don't ever buy the wheel type if your lawn is small and have corners you need to get into. You will exert more energy and storage will be a major problem. I hope I have given you a perspective view of a good machine. e

I do ageed with PC Yeoh, Get one that automatic dispense the nylon string ad also make sure you can get the replacement string easily otherwise you will have to buy the glarr trimmer each time the nylon string runs out.
I am using the manual type and each time the strings breaks , its a hassle doing it.

I have a manual B&D trimmer which I used for about a year. It's a hassle to change the nylon, but it worked till lately when the 'catch' no longer holds the nylon, rendering it useless. No point reparing it as it would cost almost the same as a new one, it think.
You are right on the auto thread loaded type. It should be a natural choice. However, as I don't have such good experience with the B&D trimmer, am very tempted to try the cheapo instead. It has auto loader and also double threaded (cutting nylon on both ends, just like the ones used by the Banglas. So maybe faster too.

You have just touch the nerve centre of my DIY when you mentioned the problem you have with your grass trimmer. I have the same problem (very common) as you and guess what. I used a Mcgyver solution (using two small screws) to fix it and it has been working perfectly for the past 3 years. Things that are made of plastic break easily and there are many ways to fix that unless it is beyond repair. When I first enquired the price of a reel of original nylon thread (transparent colour), I was shocked that it cost RM 19.80. The sadder news is that the first reel lasted only 400 sq ft of cutting. I could have paid a Bangla that amount while I laze in the garden sipping my fresh orange and reading the New Sunday Times. So, being a handyman ( and a kedukut one as well), I found that I could use the B&D nylon (much much longer) and just thread that into my original empty reel that came with the cutter for just 20 sen more. At the rate I am using it, I guess it will last me another 5 years. Serious.

I can't take it any more...LOL:p
I thought tohca was looking for a trimmer similar to the ones used by MPSJ contractors. Do you know that those trimmers running on "petrol" cost close to RM1000.00. (I know cause I have enquired). If you are talking about the electric trimmers, now that's another story.
I have an electric trimmer and also an electric lawn mower (no cheapo stuff), problem is I don't use them at all. They are just sitting pretty in the garden shed. I bought these appliances on the insistence of my wife, who had this idea of us doing the garden oursleves, well it never happened. I think we used them max 3 times. It's a case of buying the whole cow so that we can have a milk drink.
We now get this freelance grass cutter to trim the grass every 1-2 months for about RM40.00. The amount of money that I spent on the trimmer and mower would sustain this for more than 4 years.
Think again if you are on the market for a trimmer or lawn mower, but should the DIY demon in you insist and you "die die" must buy maybe you can take them off my hands at a reduced price.
Heh, did I mention that I also have one of those useless highpowered jet sprays .... LMAO
No wonder there are so many hardware stores in Taipan.

Robertec has reminded me of my experience too. I had a trimmer and a lawn mower when I was staying in SS18. Ended up getting the cutters to do the job. Why?
First, it was tiring using the trimmer. Also, it always gets tangled up with the long grass.
So decided to buy a lawn mower without the catcher (trying to be prudent!). Then found that the cut grass was flyling all over the house and car. Not to mention also yours truly! The cleaning up was so tedious, decided to give everything away and employ the free lance grass cutters. Anyway, let people cari makan lah!
The ball is in your lawn!! ;-)
Regards.
I am using the manual type.
When the original string runs out, I just go and get those with wired string cost about RM 8.00 over the reel.
Not an easy task to keep the garden tidy. Recently I loan the trimmer to my sister and she returned to me 2 months later, I have to pull the "lalangs" before I can start using the trimmer again!
If you really have the pesistancy and DIY mode is high, then go ahead, else pay RM 20 for a peaceful afternoon is better. Even though sweating thru this exercise is great.
Robertec, why not just loan yours out ... ?

The trimmer of mine is one of those auto loader type and the lawn mower has a big basket attached behind to collect the cut grass.
Both are in perfect working condition.
On the one hand, it would be pointless to loan the items to people who will not take care of them, on the other, the pressure of utilising a "loan item of value" is most times too great for people who do.
I would prefer to sell the items at a cheap price to someone who would appreciate it.
Make me an offer!! say One half the original price?

Robertec, how much would you consider to part with your grass trimmer? I would have no use for the mower as my lawn is not so big.

Lawn mowers and grass trimmers are like underwears. Never loan them to anyone. The reason being their lawns could be "infested" with weeds, lallang and "unfriendly" grass and the seeds of all these "aliens" will get stuck to your mower or trimmer and the next thing you know, your carpet grass is being sowed with wild oats when you use it. Mind you, nobody can win the battle against these wild grasses. The best is don't ever introduce them to you well behaved Taiwan or carpet grass. Thus, even how tempting it is to invite the Bangla to do a quickie job for me, I am afraid that he will introduce VD (very damaging) grass to mine.

PC's comments are funnier than the sunday comics. I wonder if they treat their beloved Taiwan grass here in Taiwan as well as M'sians do. Come to think of it.. I don't see much Taiwan grass here in Taiwan.
Way to go PC!! :D

The trimmers MPSJ use are of two types: bladed (very dangerous and virtually obsolete now) and the plastic string type. They run on petrol.
They should cost somewhere in the region of RM600-900 or more.
There is a shop in section 20 PJ (Paramount Garden) which faces the exit of TOPS supermarket that specializes in lawn mowers.
There are also shops in Jalan Ipoh which have them.
A word of caution- you need to start them regularly and some of them come with non-standard spark plugs!!!! Hard to find.
As for the plastic string, consider buying 50lb fishing line from a fishing shop. No need for the expensive stuff, just ask them for the cheapest. Works. Tennis racquet strings work too!!!!
Good luck! :)

Sorry for the delayed reaction to your question tohca.
I think a fair price for the trimmer would be RM100.00 and RM400.00 for the lawnmower.
I still have the original packing.

So at that kind of prices, the ROI (Return on Investment) for the handheld trimmer is 5 months and 20 months for the one on wheels. It will be shorter if every weekend you offer to mow your neighbours' lawn for a fee. In western countries where their summer dressing can be very very liberal, I don't mind offering free service as there will be many sight shows that will raise the temperature further. But not in USJ lah.....

The Lawnmower is being taken for a test drive and probably sold.
Leaves only the trimmer, any takers?

Gosh, this is better than eBay.com or our local lelong.com. So Robert, what else for sale?

Wah, maybe we can start our own local lelong/for sale forum area!!!!!

As I was saying earlier, I also have one Highpowered Jet Spray.
There is also a Metal frame single bed with another that tucks under on rollers, all come with additional mattresses, this is my guest room set, but I hardly ever have guests. Problem is wife went ahead and bought one of those sofa bed to replace.
Hey, how about a semi auto washing machine?
Come to think of it, I want to get rid of my Daihatsu Esprit to make room for a Kancil, any interest?
Shhhh..... don't let me wife know until it is too late....LOL

Digging up an old topic but relevant to me.
Anyone knows if there's a machinery shop that service engine type grass trimmer?
Inherited one from kampung, a "expensive" Made in Japan HONDA engine model. Trouble, is the engine is in a state of need of some spares like air filter and some ori parts to fully put it back in perfect running order. The cutter head assembly also needs replacement. Prepared to spend a decent sum to put it back in full working condition, a complete new one is slightly more than a GRAND!.. sorry, made in PRC don't last and limited lifetime.
A total waste if thrown away.
Anyone can point to any nearby machine shop specializing in this kind of stuff?

Visited one such machinery shop with grass cutters at Jalan SS2/30 Petaling Jaya. This road is behind ESH electrical store at SS2. The shop in on the 2nd row (behind ESH) on the OTHER end of SS2/30. Its shop selling these kind of machinery, sorry, can't recall the name. They offer budget to mid priced cutters are now sourced from China. Most expensive one costing a grand is a Japan Mitsubishi engined cutter. For Honda, call UMW Industrial Power S.B (http://www.umwip.com.my/brush.htm), for their dealer contacts. Yes, I did call them once and directed me to their dealer at Jalan Kuchai Lama. I suppose some machinery hardware shops around Klang Valley have these machines for sale, just have to drive around and visit them, afterall these are likely categorized as specialiaty machines.
My Father in law who gave me this Honda machine, said its of superb reliability for years, till it broke..and I had to DIY overhaul the engine myself recently..only replacing one major power take off shaft ball bearing (worn and noisy) costing RM10 which I easily bought from a nearby auto spares shop. Its now running fine, only the end cutter assembly have to be entirely replaced. Fortunately the engine service manual was also easily found on the internet enabling me more insight to tackling the engine mechanics.

Somebody told me Masport is good, is it true?
It seems UMW stopped bringing in Honda since 18 years ago, so none is available in the Malaysian Market.
It seems Masport uses Honda's engine?

Yup, couple of doors away from Lobsterman.
Daytime working hours presumably.
No phone number recorded, was just passing by to another restaurant in that area.

I reckon you'd have to do own research finding some of these shops retailing or servicing these machines.
All I know is if the engine are made by Honda, Mitsubishi or Kawasaki, they're reputable alright since they've been manufacturing small engines for decades.
I believe UMW still carry Honda brand engines as part of their industrial product range. Give them a call and ask them for leads to the right people or dealers.
