i hv thus far get fair & balanced views from many...

So, in the interest to 'go slow', maintain healthy lifestyle, get enuff exercise without impacting any olde' joints...i am seriously contemplating taking up some kinda bicycling.

So I beg to ask for opinion what bicycle to buy. My aim is NOT to buy a NASA designed RM10000 or even a RM5000 or rm3000 bicycle..This is to prevent a sheer wa$tage of hard earned money juct in case, i give up this hopbby afetr 2 laps around my neighborhood.

This ELcheapo under RM2000 bicycle must have
- gear shift
- ability to be used for long distance (like touring around the country with panniers)
- Under 15kg and easily to take off front wheel for a possible transport by AAsia to say, Chiangmai? Vienntien? Sulawesi?

Any expert here?

MAny thanks...

How about a hybrid? a mountain bike with normal road tyres and different gears for road use exercise. There is plenty of choice between RM800 - RM1500.

Road bikes seem to cost more, lightweight road bikes very expensive

Just to play, play, no need to spend so much. You can get a road bicycle with 15 or 18 speed gears for about RM 600. Of course won't come with gas-filled absorbers, air-cooled seats or massager. :D

I dont see why not. I guess it boils down to position and comfort, do you want your head down for speed or do you want to be more upright?
A road bike can have dropped, flat or raised handlebars, a mountain bike has flat or raised handlebars.
I put an adjustable stem on my bike so i could get a more upright position and see what is going on around me, i lose speed but the bike is for my waistline not racing :D
Being more upright will also give you a wider choice of saddles.
Is weight really critical? If so you will spend a small fortune.
As far as i know you can fit panniers to any bike.
I got my hybrids from USJ Cycles in USJ4, they were friendly and quick to swap handlebars, brakes, wheels and saddles around for me to find what felt comfortable even though i was not looking at their more expensive bikes.

If you go below RM1000 or known brands, make sure parts are readily available for repair or upgrade, no weird fastner sizes are used etc.

What about foldable bicycles ? Saw some on display at USJ 19 City Mall about a week ago.

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know where they have unicycles ?

Uncle Tupai....my pile of rusting metal is also a ton in weight. I think, it's most likely, you would have to slow down for me.

Hiliary got it right! It's a new generation bike, lightweight and multipurpose. If you think a mountianbike ,it is good for off road and if you try to cyclye long distance ,your butt will sore like a cucumber in your a**.coz the tires cause alot of friction. If you have a budget around RM3-5K buy 2 bikes. :D

The hybrid or touring bike would fit your criteria with gear shift. Not sure if you can get it under 15kg though. Most of the bikes now hv quick release for the wheels, so your front and rear wheel can be removed within seconds.
The KSH Bike shop in Tmn Tun might hv what u r looking for.

Hey hello there Lato Tupai... maybe get one to go round your neighborhood first lah before thinking of a bike for long-distance touring. Not that I want to put a dampener and pour cold water on your enthusiasm but I thought you said it was just to have a healthy lifestyle - at our age, I presume we are of the same age group, pushing it a wee bit too far is pushing the envelope lah... for touring, I suggest you stick to your Harley Davidson Sportster 1200 vroom vroom... :D

Tupai is going greenlah turning into Incredile Hulk with the recent govt hike on gasoline. Moreover, they might cut down the trees at Subang Ria for Sime Derby development and he is going more envioroment free with the protest. :D
BTW, he is already going into vegetarian as he is abstaining from shark fin soup lately.
