SHAH ALAM, Feb 14 (Bernama) -- The Bahasa Melayu subject in schools should rightly be called Bahasa Malaysia for better acceptance of multi-racial Malaysians, Deputy Minister of Information Datuk Zainudin Maidin said Friday.
He said this request was made by Malaysia's Father of Independence, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, during his time but it had been forgotten.
"Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad also mentioned it yesterday and reminded us of our origins.
"There's nothing to lose by calling it Bahasa Malaysia and in fact, the language will be better accepted by the other races in the country," he told reporters after a forum on the leadership and struggles of the Tunku in conjunction with his 100th anniversary.
I totally agree. I always say Bahasa Malaysia or BM. BTW, when was it officially called Bahasa Melayu .....

In the good 'ol days when we studied in "English" schools, there were "Malay" schools. The Malay schools catered for Malay kids and they offered Bahasa Melayu as the default language subject. The non-Malay (vernacular and English) schools' default national language was Bahasa Malaysia although students with good command of Malay can choose to take the Bahasa Melayu paper. Obviously, the Bahasa Melayu paper was the tougher one.
Now we don't have English schools, only Kebangsaan schools and vernacular schools. I guess Bahasa Melayu went out with the times?

This is a little step forwards and we should all be proud of ourselves.
I always make it a point to educate my two sons that our national language is Bahasa Malaysia and we should all be proud of our language. The Chinese and English languages are two foreign languages we learn to better able to compete in real life. In another word, knowing extra languages give us that extra edge in everything we strike to do better.
Now that BM is Bahasa Malaysia, would KTM be Kerata Api Tanah Malaysia?

when i first came to italy and got acquainted with some ppl here my bfs dad asked me, "how do you say good night in malaysian" and i told him well sir, there's no such thing as malaysian. then he asked me how i said good night at home. and i said, "good night." and he was puzzled and i explained that the great majority of malaysians these days speak english. i then told him i could say good night in cantonese, mandarin, hokkien, tamil, hindi, sikh, or ibanese to him because malaysia is diverse in culture and heritage. but our national language is malay, and good night in malay is "selamat malam".
uchang is right, it is a point of pride.

I've been following this topic for a while now and still can't figure out when BM was called Bahasa Melayu. When i was in school, it was always known as Bahasa Malaysia. When was it ever called Bahasa Melayu? In case anyone's wondering, i'm in my mid30's now , so go figure when i was in school.

Ah... in that case, better put it back to being Bahasa Malaysia. That way it won't seem like everyone's learning the malay person's language, but the 1st language of the country. Any bored politician out there wanting to make changes, pls find some other area that really needs fixing like the quality of education, and finding ways to keep students in school long enough to hv proper education.
