I was just wondering how many amongst us actually buy newspapers to read these days. I am not referring to the freebies from the office but rather using your own hard earned money to buy newspapers. I do not buy any and have not bought any for more than 12 years but i do buy the Edge although it would not qualify as a msm. I do not even take the free papers. Maybe I am a bit extreme but i would like to know amongst the people in this forum,

Given up buying any for 10 years now. You know how much I've saved?
Glad I did! Of course and unless ITS REALLY NECCESSARY and I want to cut out some article for saving.
Morever knowing such companies are you know who controlled and own.. I LOATH BUYING ANY!

Not amazingly, I think no-one around me have papers delivered to home like long past trend. Newspaperman profession probably near extinct. Mahu beli...nearest petrol station lor! :)

No Star (or any newspaper if I am overseas) no sh*t .... :o :o

I do and I buy two Chinese papers on every Sunday.

I only interested on the articles from the overseas columnists and international correspondent. Those views present another angle to look at current affairs.

For example, the stories around the current Nobel peace winner....

I think NST (& Utusan) sales must have plummeted recently. They resorted to giving my golf club (KGNS) free daily. We got The Sun already free every morning. It's a stack each of them now every morning.

I'd estimate it to be at least 100 copies. Ok it's not much but I think it's reflective on the NST group sales drop.

Sheez...I thought it was just me ;)

Yep, I still need my Star...sometime back, when the Sun was being delivered for Free to SJ homes...I decided to stop the Star [save money after wifey grumble]....regretfully it didn't workout well. The Sun just does not have enough in it to last through my morning coffee all the way to the Throne :D

Hehehee ... now you know why I always call The Star - a "Shitty" newspaper :p - esp when I read Wong Chun Wai editorial when he starts going lyrical in promoting his paymasters - scared the "sh*t" out of me to read so much "bullsh*t".

Luckily, I stopped reading NST group papers (since 1980s) - with all the "verbal diarrhea" on the "good deeds" of their paymasters ... I will be suffering from diarrhea also ... :p

Had stopped buying local newspapers and watching RTM for many years. Initially it was hard but now I cannot bear to read or watch them. Those years, RTM will start with the PM's name, followed by the DPM's name and then next depending who is the flavor of the day. Do they still do that? It makes me feel like I am in North Korea or old Iraq.

currymee, get a netbook lah. Very good for reading when seating on your throne - especially if you take long time to do your business. :o

If you still need to read the star you can go for their online star. Its free some more. I used to buy star for its av supplements and that was many many years aga when they had a few fellas doing reviews. There used to be a big following until the 1997 crisis took the wind out of everything. There are still some agents catering to a very specific niche market and generally higher end so i guess they think that it is not worth while to have full time av writers. I dont know what they are doing now, there was this guy Sujesh and an Anthony Lim if i remember correctly.

I always adhered to the good advice - DON'T BRING ANY ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES INTO THE BATHROOM/TOILET unless you are looking for trouble :) - maybe I will try with my favourite Asterix or Tintin comics in the future instead .... ;)

What used to be a money spinning business for the newspapers owners basically turned into a deadweight around the newspapers once the politicians decided that it would be a good idea to turn the newspapers into their official organs and purveyors of their rubbish. To me it serves them right. Look at what happened to all the msm in malaysia, in all the languages it is the same. The political parties try to keep it afloat because of pride sake and we have these people who call themselves journalists bending their backs for their political masters.

I do not really read it per se. I just look at the advertisements and have never really sat down and read the papers for a long long time. a quick glance at some of the articles would make one turn away. Its all propaganda. They might as well call it suara em see ay or suara yumno. No difference. At least the rocket and harakah are upfront about it. It is a party organ and they do not disguise the fact.

OMG! OMG! That's the reason why I asked my wife not to tapau the fried mee hoon or the "orr kueh" from the aunty selling from a stall at a corner coffee shop in SS19. She still uses old newspaper to wrap the food for takeaways. I'm sure for those who read papers in the loo, surely you have to put it down somewhere - on the toilet floor, shaft behind the flush wc etc when you want to wipe your backsides right? Have you seen old newspapers shaft between the toilet doors when you visited a toilet in a coffee shop before?

I've told the English speaking aunty about this before and the last I know she is still using old newspaper for tapau. I'm just wondering where she got the old papers from.

Not really about newspapers but newsprint paper.

Decades ago (likely still a practice in the West, especially Europe)
Fresh meat is wrapped up in quality newsprint paper thats in practice all over, perhaps thats the approved wrapping practice.
Ok..now here.. We have used NEWSPAPERS??? for wrapping your food..NO WONDER THIS LAND NEVER NAIK STANDARD!.. or if naik standard, PRICE OSO NAIK!.. ROSAK!...

There's only ONE restaurant I know which I've patronized that use PROPER WRAPPING NEWSPRINT PAPER, like in the west to wrap your take away food.
That shop is none other than Restoran Victory Arab Street Murtabak at USJ9 Subang Business Center. NO BLARDI OLD TOILET STORED NEWSPAPERS!!!!

This country is still with FILTHY PRACTICE AND HABITS in the food industry!

Can get a more balanced view online.

Hmmmm!..this phrase is subjective and debatable. Its always the reader who forms own conclusion on a given newsfeed. We're all endowed with brains to choose. :)
