According to the MMA [Medical Assoc.] Newsletter Editorial....seems our GP's are now making less money than before.

The GP business seems no longer lucrative

Quoting the Editorial:

"A prominent GP in Klang Valley could see more than 150 patients a day during good times, but now it is down to about 20," it added.

Well....I wonder what they consider lucrative?

Doing a little Math...even if the average visit to your city based GP costs RM50.00[something that's rare these days]......then at 20 patients a day, gross takings = RM1,000/day. :)

I can only imagine what the GP's were making back when they were seeing 150 patients/day. Assuming average charges back then were RM30.00, then my calculator says its RM4500

These sort of statements don't come to Press without a reason....be prepared to start paying more the next time you visit your friendly doc!

The Editorial also went on to say:
"Insurance premiums might be raised in future making it less affordable for patients thus reducing clients in the private hospitals," it said.

Sad :(

I bet those belong to specialists and surgeons of high repute, nothing less and who's fees can make just about make anyone's heartbeat suddenly go irregular or puke.
But of course there's always those who may still insist living without flashing their wealth or live in style.
Whatever it is... private hospitals WILL charge a high fee otherwise you just have to so with gahmen hospital. Its take it (afford it) or leave it and die quicker.. thats Malaysia for all!

Just not too long ago, cousin of mine living in S'pore told me, Don't ever get sick in S'pore...
Another story, unsure whether true or not.. there's a private hospital at Malacca, near Mahkota Parade..they're doing well with patients from Indonesia who come for various treatment. Nearer than Jakarta.

heck! so what?

My income also dropped like free fall lah  but then again, i think the main reason is that i am a professional unemployed beach bum biker in seeketh of minimum working hr with maximum pay :D

But honestly, doctors deserve their high income as they do save lives...i am talking the well trained specialists* here...the gp? a dime a dozen lah, with many are just so so only lah...some spend more time in run down clinic seking out mozzies to wallop as they have no walk-in patients. Ditto the run of mill dentists lah. kesian only or not?

Yang BerSelf doctoring latotupai :p

* Note that there are also sneaky conniving money faced 'doktor-kotor' specialising in scaremongering u into taking all sorta expensive & unnecessary tests. Only to see results and say "semo Ok" AFTER u hv paid the fees dll:eek:

This is true...they also go to hospitals in Penang, possibly KL too as I have seen patients being boarded on to planes from ambulances, when I fly back from Medan.

Most of these patients are from North Sumatra cities like Medan and Pekan Baru...M'sia is a lot nearer. Jakarta is 3 hour flight away.

Like any products, there are good and bad GP too. Knowledge, skill and customer service play a big part.

Just imagine this.... there is 6-8 flights a day between Aceh, Medan and Penang with Firefly, Air Asia, MAS and one other airline the name is too long to remember. It is estimated 60% of all patients at specialists centres in Penang (ie Island, Adventist, Gleneagles, Loh Guan Lye, Lam Wah Ee, Pantai etc are all Indonesians...)

Penang's population definitely cannot support the number of private hospitals on the island. Other than Indonesians there are also a large number of patients from Kedah, Perlis and North Perak (mainlanders :D )

On another note, doctors professional fees have not increased since 2002. Hospital fees, on the other hand have increased many times. So before you complain about high private doctors fees, please check your bill to see who is charging what.

Agreed - studied medicine 20 years ago, and now is pay back time.. can drive Bentley and has no time to manage the money.

My sister works in the bank and she often tells me interesting stories of the specialist doctors how they manage their money.

But, time has changed, Study medicine now and thinking of flashy life in bolehland, think twice.. likely can't even breakeven and if can breakeven, will be long long repayment years.

The biggest nightmare for mid-income parents is - when your children tell you, "'Papa, I like medicine and pursuing a medical degree in Northern Island is my mission in life". One child maybe can still survive, two or more kids, OMG

GP's are making more money than they will ever let on.

1. There are those whose main patients are drug addicts - imagine the amount they make by selling sleeping pills to the drug addict - and the drug addict comes every day. These clinics (believe me) are right in front of our eyes...

2. They make another ton of money from medicine. Buying from the pharmaceutical companies (local, gov't controlled, and foreign) and reselling it (with high mark-ups) to you. How many times have you gone to a doctor with a flu and they give you a backpack of medicine when you leave? Most of the time, you only need 1 or perhaps 2 meds. But with 5-6 meds...makes you wonder
