Zee Avi is just 23 but she's an old soul. A huge talent in a petite frame bringing a universal message from the unlikely birthplace of Borneo, an ancient island east of Malaysia which remains an untouched, natural paradise, an apt description of her songs.

How Avi came to record her debut album in L.A., the first joint release from Ian Montone's Monotone Label and Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records, is a true 21st century tale of the way the Internet has transformed the music business and shrunk the globe in the process.

Born in the tiny town of Miri in Sarawak on the island of Borneo, Zee grew up near the South China Sea in a liberal, encouraging household where her father owned an energy consultancy. "I was bred to be a lawyer," she says, but music was in her blood. Her father's father sang and played double-bass, accordion, violin and guitar in bands.

At age 12, Zee moved from Borneo to Kuala Lumpur where she has been based since. At 17, Zee started locking herself in a room for hours on end to learn to play guitar. Guitar took a back seat for 4 years while she was studying fashion design in London. When she returned to Kuala Lumpur, she picked the instrument back up and began writing songs and performing with a band.

Zee began recording her songs on a webcam and posting them on YouTube for a friend to hear. "I remember getting so excited when there was one new comment from some random person I didn't know... One read 'I'm lost for words - I shall favorite it and ponder if that's OK,' " which was written by Kris Rowley, a U.K. singer-songwriter with a YouTube following under the name Zzzzzzzzap. He began posting her videos on his site, which began a viral snowball effect.

The day before her 22nd birthday, Zee posted what she intended to be "my last video," a holiday song, "No Christmas for Me." By the time she checked her e-mail Avi had almost 3,000 messages including a slew of label offers. One email came from Ian Montone, who had been shown the YouTube clip by Raconteurs' drummer, Patrick Keeler, prompting Montone to get in touch and offer to release her music on the Monotone Label.

Before she knew it Zee was on a plane to L.A. to record her debut with producer Robert Carranza at Brushfire's Solar Powered Plastic Plant. "No Christmas for Me" was then featured on the holiday charity album, This Warm December, A Brushfire Holiday, Vol. 1.

*LOL*....Thanks Sentinel, for this hilarious piece. This guy is creative...:D:D

I googled the man himself and discovered he's the same man who wrote that Ai-yo-yo Samy song in the 90s. No other information available. Anyone who knows anything about the singer are welcomed to share.

Melaka born, he has been singing for over 20 years but lacked publicity. He even has gone to the extend where he has recorded his own album in his own mini studio at home. :D

He then makes CD's and sell them to his Fans over the Internet....amazing guy :)

He became popular after doing duets with Datin Orkid Abdullah, Zaiton Sameon and Aspalela Abdullah.

Agree, akiyoshi. Do check out her other songs. I like her "arrangement" And she's far, far better than Ning Baizuri, IMHO.

"Bitter Heart", I was told, had been used in a number of commercials abroad.

Strange, that you are not able to access the clip directly. Why, Sentinel had the exact complaint too. :( Did you also see some Chinese words? If so, what does it say?

I have no problem at all accessing all the youtube videos embedded here.

Nope, no Chinese words. Something like .." contains UMG content can't playback ..Watch at Youtube"
and clicking that opens up a youtube session with that clip.

Zee Avi is a natural, yes definitely better than Ning.

-An increasing number of ppl are experiencing this problem. I have however never had this problem with any of venuspop's youtube videos. :D

It is not the 'arrangement' but Zee Avi's style, kinda bouncy raggae-ish feel to her songs that is reminiscent of Jason Mraz. Who knows, maybe Zee Avi was influenced by the likes of Colbie Caillat and Jason Mraz.

Songs affect us in a myriad of ways and this one just makes me feel good, rather uplifting. :)

Not a song but an instrumental featuring Pachelbel's masterpiece 'Canon in D' a brilliant piece of music. This commercial made me smile!

Gee, Marc0, thanks for coming by. You've described her style beautifully, me thinks.

And yes, Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours" was one of my all time favourites, like 2 years ago? Here's another piece from him which I absolutely adore.

Yes I think it's in Thai. One name springs to mind ...who could come out with such inspirational commercials but unfortunately her genius is no longer with us, Yasmin Ahmad.

Its a thin fine line between fun songs and funny songs! Maybe you should have named your thread 'Great songs' or even 'Timeless songs'. ;)

*ROTFLMAO* --- I can't believe I'd just spent the last 3:28 minutes of my time being steadily horrified by this 'entertainer'.....*LOL*......It's people like him who makes me contemptuous towards karaoke in general. Yes, it is good for laughs but the singer had better not entertain any other aspiration. (And no, I haven't seen this before)..thanks for sharing....:D

"Fun" - "Funny" ~~~ makes little difference to me. Bottom line is entertainment.

I had never heard of the group Aqua nor the song Barbie Girl until about 3 years ago when someone brought to my attention the song Turn back time. I thought it was just quite ok. Then I heard the song Back to the 80's and read that Aqua was trying to make a comeback. They announced a reunion tour in 2007. I love the lyrics of Back to the 80's especially the part about Michael Jackson! :D Since then I have fallen in love with the group and another song of theirs Aquarius.

I'd never used to think much of Aqua. Thought they only had that one hit "Barbie Girl" which didn't last very long, catchy song that doesn't impress. Used to find her voice annoying. But this one you posted, "Aquarius", hmm....nice. I think she should stick to the slower numbers. :D

Yes, Shakira's "Whenever wherever" is truly something else. There's something about her vocals which reminded me of another old singer in the 80s. Is it Alanis Morissette?

"Table For One", love the melody. Thanks. Haven't heard this before.

Another 80s favorite of mine. Madonna's "Take A Bow". She's controversial, but she does deliver.

Thanks for Jake Shimabukuro's beautiful piece. After this, I'll never look at a 4 string ukulele the same way again. It IS 4 strings isn't it? I froze the frames to check. No wonder ukulele is so 'in' these days.

This one was originally written for the guitar by Mason Williams. Vanessa Mae's interpretation blew me away. At 1' 55" into the clip she walks over to the guitarist and gestures that he is playing too soft for her to hear. :)

Caravansary
Once in a while, you come across a song/music for the first time. It makes you stop in your tracks. Your hair stands on ends and all consciousness back away as you focus intently on the piece. Words failed me and I know this is a weak attempt to explain the emotions going through me but that was how I felt the first time I heard this piece way back when. I don't prefer the vocal version though. Found it too distracting.

That piece by Vanessa Mae is one of my favorites too. :D

wow! Caravansary almost sounds like a religious experience for you. I'm glad you had your epiphany! :p

Saturday Night Fever kind of epitomizes the disco culture for me. I guess for most of us guys, many an hour was spent trying to reproduce John Travolta's slick & sensual moves only to arrive at the disappointing realization that there was going to be just one John Travolta ever! :D

I am heavily into the songpoets and most of you would be familiar with songs like Vincent, American Pie, And I Love You So etc so I would like to highlight his less well known but equally amazing compositions. When it comes to songs from the songpoets the genius is all in the words!

Castle in the air
Lyrics are meaningful but too bad the tune doesn't really complement it, if you know what I mean.

To make a good composition (IMHO), the music by itself must be enthralling and that is the case in Caravansary. In Vincent, American Pie, Piano Man and Bella Luna for example, it is rather the combination of both words and music that brought out the magnificence of the piece. Am I even making sense to anyone? :D Songs/music touch us all in very different ways, doesn't it? :D:D

I kinda like Cusco's "Flute Battle" though maybe it isn't really that popular...

I think the song you're referring to is called "A Place, Far Far Away".
This is the very famous Chinese folk song with melody originally from Kazakhstan and rewritten in Chinese by the world-famous Wang Luobin who is acclaimed as the father of Chinese folk music.

If I'm not wrong Papalotti diden record this song. I have the CD "Passion" by Jose Carreras and one of the songs included in this CD is "A Place Far Far Away".

I searched for Carreras' version in Youtube but couldn't find any.
One of the best renditions found in Youtube is this version.
The music arrangement in Carreras' interpretation closely resembles this version here:

Yes, yes, yes! ~~~ You are right. This is the one because now I remembered the "ku niang" part. I may have been mistaken about Pavarotti (bless his soul, he's dead, right?) vs Jose Carreras. It was, like 20 years ago but I preferred their version as compared to this singer. Deeper resonance, is that what it's called? :D:D

Yes. This is one of my favorites too. Had forgotten all about this. I remembered that Yasmin Yusoff used to run this on her morning show and I used to be pretty awed with their Indian accent. Loved the part where they go "Boom Bi Di Boom Bi Di Boom Bi Di Boom ..." ~~~ TFS. :D:D

First off from the superstar they called the Oriental Mau Wong, the Cat King himself, Mr. Cheng Kwan Min! :)

Yit Kap Hot. Hotter Than Hot: Cheng Kwan Min.
This song best epitomises all the hits recorded by him.
A repertoire of silly love songs, gambling blues, drinking blues and the hard life in HK then.
Comical lyrics rewritten with melodies borrowed from popular western songs at that time. :)

Found another version for you Mr. Chang.
A live medley of Can't Buy Me Love, I Saw Her Standing There and I Started A Joke. :) ....
Thanks Choopy, that's the 2 songs I remember and was trying to locate. Michael Hui isn't in that video but come to think of it, Michael probably never did that song because he does not sing ... only talks a lot. The 2nd tallest guy is Sam Hui. BTW, if i am not mistaken, the tallest singer should be Cheng SiuChow. Not sure if the short guy was Ricky Hui.

The 3rd song was actually imitating the BeeGess - did you see Sam Hui with the artificial buck teeth? He was doing "Robin Gibbs" :)

After doing some more 'digging' on google I think I have identified the mysterious 3rd singer in that video clip. I don't think it's Adam Cheng. It looks more likely to be Stanley Hui Koon Miu. His pic at here: http://www.hkcinemagic.com/en/people.asp?id=11855 This must have been the 'Hui Brothers Show'.

@venuspop: Scorpions is simply absobloominglutely brilliant! :D

Hello Vietnam - Xin Chŕo Việt Nam - Phạm Quỳnh Anh For LK... See quynhanhmusic

Tell me all about this name, that is difficult to say.
It was given me the day I was born.

Want to know about the stories of the empire of old.
My eyes say more of me than what you dare to say.

All I know of you is all the sights of war.
A film by Coppola, the helicopter's roar.

One day I'll touch your soil.
One day I'll finally know my soul.
One day I'll come to you.
To say hello... Vietnam.

Tell me all about my colour, my hair and my little feet
That have carried me every mile of the way.

Want to see your house, your streets. Show me all I do not know.
Wooden sampans, floating markets, light of gold.

All I know of you is the sights of war.
Hello Vietnam
A film by Coppola, the helicopter's roar.

One day I'll touch your soil.
One day I'll finally know my soul.
One day I'll come to you.
To say hello... Vietnam.

And Buddha's made of stone watch over me
My dreams they lead me through the fields of rice
In prayer, in the light...I see my kin
I touch my tree, my roots,my begin

One day I'll touch your soil.
One day I'll finally know my soul.
One day I'll come to you.
To say hello... Vietnam.

One day I'll walk your soil
One day I'll finally know my soul
One day I'll come to you
To say hello...Vietnam
To say hello...Vietnam
To say xin chŕo... Vietnam

iinm this song, the original by Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin, was actually banned by RTM. The instrumental version was however allowed. Back then we used to refer to this song as 'Love at first sight' cos we had great difficulty pronouncing Je T'aime Moi Non Plus as most of us weren't French! mannnn ....this song was huge at parties back then, we'd jump up looking for dance partners as soon as we heard this song start to play. Can't understand kids these days what with the loud music with the guy and gal doing their own thing on the dance floor oblivious of each other!

@siewdanny: Yes, that duet of Jake Shimabukuro & Tommy Emmanuel is great! Mind if I ask what instruments you play?

@loderunner: Sam's Heart of a Loafer happens to be a favo of mine too but then again almost all of Sam's songs are my favos.

@akiyoshi: Is that a Yamaha keyboard, what model? Is your younger son a piano student? Nice rendition of Canon in D, soothing.

@venuspop: "The lady in white is on Astro now between 7 to 9pm" - Are you referring to Wah Lai Toi? i don't subscribe to WLT so I wouldn't know.

@choopy: Orianthi is great. I'm not a big fan of Steve Vai, I like his sifu more.

I prefer Cliff Richard's version of Devil Woman. The lyrics carries the melody and if you recite the lyrics instead of singing it then you have removed the melody, so what's left?

I don't think I will go with Cradle of Filth, I'll stick with Connie Chan instead. :p

Almost forgotten him. Used to watch his weekly show on RTM.
Amazed at his fast drawing skills too. I liked also his other hit "Two Little Boys". I actually found "Two Little Boys" first but I thought the 3-legged piece was more interesting. Will post the "Two Little Boys" video later tonight (if I have the time) for all to share.

I was also trying to find his painting videos but couldn't find a good one to show ... then I remembered the sand-animator and that was why it followed Rolf Harris in my earlier posts.

Colors of the wind is a beautiful song. I like the Vanessa Williams version which is a little slower and I'm not sure if the soundtrack was sung by her.

@venuspop: iinm Within you'll remain is an original English composition, it was never a cover of a Chinese song. The prominent use of the pentatonic scale giving it the characteristic 'Chinese sound' probably convinced a lot of people that it was a cover of a Chinese song.

Venessa Williams is the first Afro-American to win the Miss America title in 1983. However a nude photo scandal pressured her to surrender the beauty title but was allowed to keep most of the prize money. "Save the best for last" was her biggest hit to date.

Don't know a lot of Mandarin but Wen Bi doesn't sound like a Goodbye Kiss, which was the youtube title. Goodbye, if I'm not mistaken is "Chai Chien" and kiss ~~~ kiss is ~~~ err.....:D

Anyway, wen bi sounds like stubborn. :D ~~~ to me. ;)

Could you please post the version with Jacky's voice? I'll like to compare his version and MLTR and see which one is better. Thanks.

I preferred the Chinese version sang by Jacky Cheung than the English song by MLTR. There are more musical instruments involved. However MLTR version is easier to sing along and is a karaoke favourite.

Seal - Kiss From A Rose - "Batman Forever" Soundtrack - Multiple awards winner record.

Lyrics:

There used to be a graying tower alone on the sea.
You became the light on the dark side of me.
Love remained a drug that's the high and not the pill.

But did you know,
That when it snows,
My eyes become large and,
The light that you shine can be seen.

Baby,
I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray.
...kiss from a rose on the gray.
Ooh,
The more I get of you,
Ooh...................
Stranger it feels, yeah.
And now that your rose is is in bloom.
A light hits the gloom on the gray.

There is so much a man can tell you,
..there....................woa...
So much he can say.
there's so much inside.
You remain,
you.......
My power, my pleasure, my pain, baby
To me you're like a growing addiction that I can't deny.. yeah.
Won't you tell me is that healthy, baby?

But did you know,
That when it snows,
My eyes become large and the light that you shine can be seen.

Baby,
I've...
I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the gray.
been.............. kissed from a rose on the gray.
Ooh, the more I get of you
...ooh...........the..
Stranger it feels, yeah
stranger it feels, ...yeah.
Now that your rose is in bloom.
A light hits the gloom on the gray,

I've been kissed by a rose on the gray,
...I've been.......................I've...
I've been kissed by a rose
...been kissed by a rose on the gray.
I've been kissed by a rose on the gray,
...I've been.......................I've...
...And if I should fall, at all
I've been kissed by a rose
...been kissed by a rose on the gray.

There is so much a man can tell you,

During the Anshi Rebellion, as Emperor Xuanzong was fleeing from the capital Chang'an to Chengdu, she was killed because his guards blamed the rebellion on her powerful cousin Yang Guozhong and the rest of her family.

However there is also another story that goes like this:

A Japanese rumour state that Lady Yang had been rescued, escaped to Japan and lived her remaining life there. In Japanese, she is known as Yōkihi.

It was reported in a Chinese newspaper that Momoe Yamaguchi's ancestry can be traced back to Yang Yuhuan, later to become Yang Guifei (713-756), one of the few women whose beauty has caused the downfall of monarchs and nations.! Momoe retired at the height of her fame and stardom to get married. This is the last song from her final concert aptly titled "Last Song For You". She is a stunning beauty but this video clip is none too flattering cos she was on the point of a breakdown. Incidentally with the rise of canto-pop in the 70's, with the exception of artists who wrote their own material like Samuel Hui, record producers and singers 'borrowed' wholesale from Western songs and J-Pop. This song was covered by Leslie Cheung in the canto version called Fung Kei Chuk Chui (wind continues to blow)

Momoe Yamaguchi has Chinese origins
Latest Updated by 2003-11-06 16:28:04

FAMOUS Japanese actress Momoe Yamaguchi is a des-cendent of a Chinese family surnamed Yang, a family of the same origin as a well-known ancient concumbine of China's Tang Dynasty (618-907), some recently revealed documents show.

Yamaguchi believes that this is more evidence that she is related to concubine Yang Yuhuan, one of the legendary "four beauties"of ancient China. In an interview last year Yamaguchi claimed that she was related to Yang.

A village called Xitouyang in Sanmen County, Zhejiang Province is where the Yamaguchi line originated, the family history books of both Yamaguchi and Yang show.

A 1690 version of the Yamaguchi's family history book showed that Yamaguchi was descended from Yang Mingzhou. Legend has it that Yang had lived at a village called Yang Village, which is located near a stream in Zhejiang Province. On his way to Ningbo, Yang was blown to Okinawa after his ship was hit by a typhoon and drifted on the sea for 28 days. Yang then settled in Okinawa.

This record coincides with the history book of the Yang family in Xitouyang Village, Zhejiang Province. The village is inhabited by a large clan surnamed Yang, and Xitou means "near a stream."

According to the book, "Anlei, whose literary name is Mingzhou, was lost on his way to Ningbo."

More than 300 years after Yang Mingzhou's disapperance, some members of the Yamaguchi family went to Zhejiang to look for their origins. In February 1998, the Yamaguchi family was finally written into the Zhejiang Yang family history book.

Yang Mingzhou, who was well-educated, became a Chinese-language professor of the then Japanese Government. Yang got married in Okinawa and had two sons and one daughter. His second son was widely known as the ancestor of the Yamaguchi line.

Momoe Yamaguchi was one of the most popular singers and actors in Japan in the 1970s. She retired from show biz at the height of her career at age 20 in 1980. A TV series starring the actress brought her name to China in the 1980s where she became a household name.
