..... She is a stunning beauty but this video clip is none too flattering cos she was on the point of a breakdown. I....
Any idea why?
Thanks for posting this interesting write-up on Yang Kuei-Fei. From what I've read about her, it was her incompetent brother who led to her downfall. To appease his generals who wanted the Yangs' blood, the poor Emperor finally agreed to have his favourite concubine "5 horses divide the corpse" :D:D
BTW, the first video you embedded "Last Song For You" could not be accessed. Appreciate if you could post a replacement. Thanks.
Also, if you could post Leslie Cheung's "Wind Continues to blow", that'll be mighty nice of you. :)
P/s: Wasn't there a story about the Japanese people descending from 100 youths that Shih Huang Ti sent to japan to look for the elixir of youth?

"Last Song For You" could not be accessed at the time of my last post. The reason given had something to do with licence. However, I am able to access it now so there's no need to post a replacement. First thing I saw was a weeping beautiful Momoe. TFS.

Does anyone remember Footloose? This special edition of the movie that shot Kevin Bacon to the stratosphere of fame features the actor playing Ren McCormick, a decidedly urban teen who's transplanted to a small Midwestern town where dancing is outlawed. Recruiting his best pal, the quiet Willard (Chris Penn), and his girlfriend (Lori Singer), a clergyman's daughter, Ren starts a revolution by moving to the beat. Includes commentaries, footage from the musical and more.

One of the most under-rated singers in Malay pop who never quite achieved the fame enjoyed by her other sister Azlina and are the children of superstars in the Malay film world Aziz Jaafar and Normadiah. Used to spot them moving around the SS14 Subang Jaya area where I believe they used to stay.
Sepeninggalan Mu: Liza Aziz.

I remembered Danny Summer from Hongkong had also recorded Fantasia Bulan Madu in cantonese in the early 80s. But nothing beats the original version by Search which to me is one of the greatest Malay songs ever. :)
And if you noticed the original by Search, only acoustic guitars and keyboards were used in the recording, no drums at all. And Amy's voice sounds similar to Klaus Meine from Scorpions.

Kassim Selamat and The Swallows from Singapore achieved what no other Malay pop band from Singapore/Malaysia could, until this day. During the 60s it was reported that La-O-Be was released in Europe and became such a huge hit in Germany that it even managed to top the pop charts there! The other hit besides many from them, that I could recall is 'Ngak Lompak Ago Go'.

Leonard 'Satchmo' Tan I got oso bumped into him once in a neighbourhood mamak on a late lazy afternoon many years ago. There I was enjoying my roti telor bawang n nescafe tarek and he sitting alone in another table facing me. We 'locked' eyes. He didn't smile and I also dare not smile. I know who he is but he must be wondering also whether I know who he is or why I'm 'eyeing him (le kua-simi!). :p
In fact, you won't go wrong if you tell your friends you are living amongst the stars. I've even heard from friends that the hilly ss19 area where all the luxurious mansions are located is nicknamed the Beverly Hills of Subang Jaya. :D
The closest to rubbing shoulders with the stars was living 2 doors away (somewhere in Subang Jaya) from the superstars of the Malay silverscreen, Dato' Mustapha Maarof and the late Roseyatimah. Through the years, I've seen quite a number of the who's who in the Malay filmworld who came visiting frequently.
And if you're wondering, and which many of his fans do not know; Dato' Mustapha speaks perfect English, very humble and down to earth in real life. A super nice guy I would say :)

Roger Hodgson - Breakfast In America (From "Take The Long Way Home" DVD)
Roger Hodgson is the writer and composer of this jewel that is as fun today as it was when released years ago. He is the voice of Supertramp. Co-founding the band in 1969, he was the lead singer and writer of nearly all their hits throughout the bands heyday in the seventies and early eighties. Since leaving Supertramp in 1983 he has had a series of critically acclaimed and successful solo albums and come through a major accident in the late eighties that threatened his entire career. A new Supertramp best of Retrospectacle was released in 2006 and has sold over 600,000 copies in the UK alone. This DVD, the first live release from either Roger or Supertramp, was filmed in Montreal and catches Roger Hodgson at his very best.

Roger wrote this hit when he was still in his teens, before he even met Rick and co-founded Supertramp. This classic is just as relevant today as it was when it was released. Probably most of us, if not all of us, can relate to the lyrics in one way or another. Questioning - wondering who we are.

Anyone heard of Alfred Ho? Found this quite by accident.
This is another of my compositions which I wrote during the early 70's and it tells about my travelling experiences at Foch Avenue, a street in the heart of Kuala Lumpur which has now had it's name changed
Alfred Ho is the consummate entertainer with over three decades of performing experience at numerous stageshows, shopping complexes, private functions and nightspots across the country.
This is his song. "Foch Avenue" (Petaling Street)

Music's most famous sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson have been successfully writing and performing chart-toppers since their 1975 debut album. From acoustic and folk to hard-driving rock n roll, the ladies instill emotional energy into every song. Many hits followed including Crazy On You, These Dreams, Alone, Barracuda, Dreamboat Annie and many others.

讓我歡喜讓我憂- 周華健 Emil Chow
You Give Me Joy, You Give Me Pain.
When love comes to an end, it's like a river of no return.
Unending love results in unending remorse!
Why is it that when you are no longer here,
would I recollect your loveliness?
You give me care, you share my burdens.
Yet you give me so much pain!
IN the stillness of the night, I had waited in vain for you.
I cried alone and I kept it all to myself.
How I long to say, "I really love you."
How I long to say, "I'm so sorry."
In tears, you say, "Our love is over, I cannot go on. I just can't go on."
I beg of you, give me more time, give me a little bit more of your care and concern.
Don't take it all away from me.
Give me more of your space, give me more of your tenderness.
Don't make it all so hard for me.
A woman like you, you give me joy, you give me pain!
You make me willingly sacrifice everything I am for you!

Reshmonu (born Hiresh Haridas, Malayalam: born 26 May 1976 in Malacca) is a singer-songwriter from Malaysia who does mostly-English songs. He is known for songs such as "Walk Away", "Cintaku Pergi", "Hey Waley" and "Superfine", as well as for his hairstyles. Of Malayalee descent, he became a father in 2005. (Wikipedia)
I thought his "Hey Waley" music video was great but don't know if Mr Chang will approve so dare not post here. ;)

Why, it's the same for me too. Sometimes you hear a song you like on the radio but the DJ either don't announce the title or pronounced it so badly you can't figure out what they say. A lot have changed since then, IMHO. Nowadays, if you only know one sentence of a great song, Uncle Google will tell you the title of said song. Miracles like this don't happen during our time. ;)

Before Jack Neo, Moses Lim and Pua Chu Kang, the Kings of Chinese Comedy in Singapore were Wang Sa and Ye Fong.
Source: Youtube user fhlew: http://goo.gl/n0qIY.
The late Wang Sa (real name Heng Kim Ching) (1924 - 1998) and Ye Fong (real name Xiao Tian Cai) (1932 - 1995) were well known comedians on local TV in the 1960s and 1970s with their mix of dialect and Mandarin jokes. Chinese Variety Shows such as Sharp Night were produced by Television Singapura.
In their heyday Wang Sa and Ye Fong were always good for a barrel of laughs with their cross-talk routine. They were the local version of Laurel and Hardy - the grand old men of Singapore comedy affectionately known as Ah Pui and Ah San (The Fat and Skinny Ones).
They met in the 1960s on Xin Sheng Ge Tai or live theatre and never looked back. They performed in theatres as well as on national TV programmes. The two also recorded some songs in dialect which sold very well then. Their unique mix of Teochew, Hokkien, pasar Malay, mumbo-jumbo Cantonese and pidgin English never failed to raise a laugh in the 1960s and 1970s.
Many youngsters today may not understand their then catch phrase: Tee ah, agak-agak chiu ho (Brother, take it easy!). They worked together from the 1960s till 1972 and then split to try their luck at movie-making in Hongkong.
Ye Fong and Wang Sa went to Hongkong in the 1980s and appeared in several Cantonese movies there. The two are Singapore's only Asian movie stars. The huge box-office success of their 1974 Hongkong debut The Crazy Bumpkins spawned three sequels. Ye Fong was the most outstanding comedian in the 20th Asian Film Festival.

Choopy ~~~ You did it again! Thanks for the above write-up. I remembered these two comedian too but very vaguely. The fat guy on the far right in your picture for "Let's Go Clubbing. Bebop-A-Lula."? He is very familiar. I remembered a time when I was too young to understand the teo chew. And there was one particular "show" we would listen to every other day (vinyl) because it is funny. The adults used to laugh and I only vaguely understand. It had something to do with pidgin English, something about "You something wrong, mispronounced as long etc" ~~~ Please tell me you knew which show that is ~~~~ *VP pleads* :D

There was also another 'Sha la la' type song which was a hit in Malaysia in the late 60s.
Sha la la I Love You by The Shuffles
Great song. Playing the bass line along with the vocals works even better than strumming/finger picking the chords if accompanying yourself on the guitar.

Here's the wikipedia info on Lao Fu Zi: http://goo.gl/z7zV7
It was created by Alphonso Wong from Hong Kong in 1962 and serialised from 1964. And there's the interesting info that Alphonso copied it from the original cartoonist Peng Di from China.
Lao Fu Zi's comic strips are available here: http://www.oldmasterq.com/

Robert Lee Helms (August 15, 1933–June 19, 1997), better known as Bobby Helms, was an American country music singer who enjoyed his peak success in 1957 with his hit, "Jingle Bell Rock".
Born in Bloomington, Indiana, into a musical family, Helms began performing as a duo with his brother, Freddie, before going on to a successful solo career in country music. In 1956, Helms made his way to Nashville, Tennessee, where he signed a recording contract with Decca Records. The following year was filled with astonishing successes. Helms' first single in 1957 titled "Fraulein" went to No. 1 on the country music chart and made it into the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Later that same year he released "My Special Angel", which also hit No. 1 on the country charts and entered the Top 10 on Billboard's pop music chart, peaking at No. 7.
Released just a few days before Christmas 1957, his song "Jingle Bell Rock" was a big hit. Uniquely, it also re-emerged four out of the next five years, and sold so well that it repeated each time as a top hit, and became a Christmas classic still played to this day. It took five years for this song to become a second million seller for Helms. It reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent 21 weeks in the chart. The record gained gold disc status. Accounts that Helms wrote and recorded the song with legendary guitar player Hank Garland seem to be apocryphal—ASCAP and Allmusic list the writers of the song as Joseph Beal, Joseph Carlton, James Ross and James Boothe.
Helms continued touring and recording for the next three decades. His pioneering contribution to the genre has been recognized by the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
Helms spent most of his later years living just outside of Martinsville, Indiana until his death from emphysema and asthma at the age of 63 in 1997.

Fraulein, Fraulein, look [D] up toward the Heaven
Each [E] night when the stars [E7] start to [A] shine

To the sweetheart that I left behind

Fraulein, Fraulein, walk down by the river
Pretend that your hand's holdin' mine
By the same stars above you, I swear that I love you

Beautiful lyrics - "Piano Man" Billy Joel
"Piano Man" is a fictionalized retelling of real people Joel met during his days as a piano-lounge singer in Los Angeles, after the failure of his first album, Cold Spring Harbor.[1] Joel's own personal feelings about this failure are expressed in the failed dreams of the characters in his song. At the time, Joel was trying to get out of a bad deal with the record company Family Productions, so, according to Joel, he was "hiding out" at the bar, performing under the name Bill Martin while Columbia Records tried to get him out of the deal.[2] At the end of the song it tells of his very good success in his bar performances, but not quite making it to the big time.
The verses of the song are sung from the point of view of a bar piano player who focuses mainly on everyone else at the bar: an old man, John the bartender, the waitress, businessmen, and bar regulars like "real estate novelist" Paul and US Navy sailor, Davey. Most of these characters have unfulfilled dreams, and the pianist's job, it seems, is to help them "forget about life for a while". The chorus, in bar-room sing-along style, comes from the bar patrons themselves, who plead, "Sing us a song. / You're the piano man. / Sing us a song, tonight. / Well, we're all in the mood for a melody, / and you've got us feeling all right."

Heavy metal or no metal at all whimps and posers go on get out
Leave the hall

Manowar is an American heavy metal band from Auburn, New York, United States, formed in 1980. They are known for writing lyrics with an emphasis on the heavy metal genre itself, fantasy (particularly sword and sorcery) and mythological topics (particularly Norse mythology).
Manowar's sound is loud and bombastic; in an interview for MTV in February 2007, bassist Joey DeMaio lamented that "these days, there's a real lack of big, epic metal that is drenched with crushing guitars and choirs and orchestras... so it's nice to be one of the few bands that's actually doing that."
In 1984 the band was included in the Guinness Book of World Records for delivering the loudest performance, a record which they have since broken on 2 occasions. They also hold the world record for the longest heavy metal concert after playing for 5 hours and 1 minute in Bulgaria in 2008.
Although the band has never been a mainstream commercial success in the United States, they maintain a strong cult following there. In contrast, they are extremely popular in the heavy metal scene in Europe, Japan, Australia and South America. Dedicated fans are known and referred to by the band as "Metal Warriors", "Manowarriors" or "Immortals", and collectively their fans are known as the "Army of Immortals". The band has sold over 9 million albums.

They can't stop us
Let 'em try
For heavy metal
We will die!
Quit my job this morning said forever
I would hold my head up high
Cause I need metal in my life
Just like an eagle needs to fly
So I walked outside into the street
From a hall I heard thunder and screams
I walked inside so I could hear
And the guy beside me gave me a beer
He had his fist up in the air
And called me brother said my friends
Are over there
They call themselves immortals
They're the truest of the true
And in that very moment
I was born again like you
They said hold your head up high
Raise your fist up in the air
Play metal louder than hell
Louder than hell
They can't stop us
Let 'em try
For heavy metal
We would die!
Brothers stand beside me, there's a battle on
Know my words are true
There's a battle for true metal
They're marching; they're marching on
Me and you
Ten thousand strong are here tonight
With twenty thousand fists up in the air
The power of true metal's calling you
It's everywhere
Hold your head up high
Raise your fist up in the air
Play metal louder than hell
Louder than hell
They can't stop us
Let 'em try
For heavy metal
We would die!

Manowar, manowar living on the road
When we're in town speakers explode
We don't attract whimps 'cause we're too loud
Just true metal people that's Manowar's crowd
They wanna keep us down
But they can't last
When we get up we're gonna kick your axx
Gonna keep on burning
We always will
Other bands play - Manowar kill
Other bands play - Manowar kill
We like it hard, we like it fast
We got the biggest amps, man they blast
The true metal people wanna rock not pose
Wearin' jeans and leather, not cracker jack clothes
They wanna keep us down
But they can't last
When we get up we're gonna kick your axx
Gonna keep on burning
We always will
Other bands play - Manowar kill
Other bands play - Manowar kill
We're the Kings of Metal comin' to town
When we light up, have the roof nailed down
Don't try to tell us that we're too loud
'Cause there ain't no way that we'll ever turn down
They wanna keep us down
But they can't last
When we get up we're gonna kick your axx
Gonna keep on burning
We always will.

I mushed from Port Barren through a blizzard of snow
Been out prospecting for two years or so
Pulled into Fairbanks, the city was a boon
So I took a little stroll to the Red Dog saloon
As I walked in the door the music was clear
The prettiest voice I had heard in two years
The song she was singin' made a man's blood run cold
When it's springtime in Alaska it's forty below
It was red headed Lil who was singin' so sweet
I reached down and took the snow packs off my feet
I reached for the gal who was singin' the tune
We did the Eskimo hop all around the saloon
Where the caribou crawl and the grizzly bear hug
We did our dance on a Kodiak rug
The song she kept singing made a man's blood run cold
When it's springtime in Alaska it's forty below
I was as innocent as I could be
I didn't know Lil was big Ed's wife to be
He took out his knife and he gave it a throw
When it's springtime in Alaska I'll be six feet below.

The lightning express from the depot so grand
Had started out on its way
All of the passengers that were on board
Seemed to be happy and gay
But one little boy who sat by himself
Was reading a letter he had
You could plainly tell by the look on his face
That the contents of it made him sad
The stern old conductor then started his round
Taking tickets from everyone there
And finally reaching the side of the boy
He gruffly demanded his fare
"I have no ticket" the boy then replied
"But I'll pay you back someday"
"Then I'll put you off at the next stop we make"
But he stopped when he heard the boy say
"Please Mr. Conductor
Don't put me off of this train
The best friend I have in this world sir
Is waiting for me in pain
Expecting to die any moment sir
And may not live through the day
I wanna reach home and kiss mother goodbye
Before God takes her away"
A girl sitting near was heard to exclaim
"If you put him off, it's a shame"
Taking his hand, a collection she made
The boy's way was paid on the train
"I'm obliged to you miss for your kindness to me"
"You're welcome," she said, never fear
Each time the conductor would pass through the car
The boy's words would ring in his ear
"Please Mr. Conductor
Don't put me off of this train
The best friend I have in this world sir
Is waiting for me in pain
Expecting to die any moment sir
And may not live through the day
I wanna reach home and kiss mother goodbye

yes i think Petula Clark's version is better. Vocal wise I have to say Judith Durham comes out ahead of Ms Clark, my 2cts.
ahhhh I really hate this song - Olive Tree. The melody does nothing for me and leaves me cold! Infuriatingly mediocre and pedantic. Maybe the beauty lies in its lyrics and unfortunately I don't understand Mandarin. Melody wise - ugh!
