As the topic suggests....I nearly became a victim of mugging today.
It was raining cats & dogs this evening about 4pm+ , and as I was walking past my college, there's this open air parking bay I was passing by, about 1/2 the size of a futsal soccer pitch. It's next to Taylor's College. Just right at the end of the shoplots, there's this carpark which becomes a Western food restaurant at night. Usually lotsa people pass by that particular section, but because of the heavy rain, only a handful went pass that place.
It was raining heavily so I walked under the shade. Was alone at that time and suddenly, someone shouted from behind asking me to stop. Obvious reaction would be to stop and see what's the matter.
There were two adults, twenty-something, one quite well-built(A) about 5ft 8",the other plump(B) & about 5ft 6".
They asked me whether I passed by that place yesterday and "pao" (= mug) anyone. Then they asked me which gang I'm from. Unfortunately, I don't participate in those activities so I said 'no' and A passed me his hp (Nokia 6510) & asked me to talk to the guy on the phone.
Meanwhile, the other accomplice,B, wanted to have a look at my phone to check my number (duh?). Silly me, I passed the phone to him thinking that I've got the "insurance" with the other guy's 6510.
The man on the phone asked me questions like which gang I'm from, where I live,my age and name.Which of course I failed to answer correctly & have to deny that I don't participate in any of those activities.
Later on I passed the 6510 back to A and then he immediately demanded to see my college ID card, which only then I suspect something amiss.
I said "for what" and then noticed at the same moment, B was gonna put my hp into his pocket. That's when the alarm bells started ringing and I said "woi, what you doing?".
B then said "nothing" and took my hp and wiped on his shirt saying "i'm cleaning it". I then realised what their true intentions were at that point !
I asked for my hp back and B didn't respond. Then I said.. "you know who am I". Then A said "who?". I said "my father is a policeman". I think those few words shocked them cause.....
Immediately I sounded them damn loud (can hear from 1 end of a football field to another) I said "Don't f*ck around with my phone". I managed to grab it away from B and repeated even louder the same sentence. At that time,a few passerbys were approaching.
I then walked away from the shade under the rain with my umbrella. B then came forward towards me with a fist in the air. I was prepared for an attack, but thank God that didn't have to happen.
I pretended calling my so-called "gang" with my hp and they pretended like they were gonna follow me all the way. Suprisingly, A asked B to stop following me after taking about 10 steps and they fled towards the residential area soaking wet under the downpour.
Some facts :
a) I know they're talking a load of BS regarding the gang thingy cause I never did mug anyone the previous day (not like I would've mug on any day for that matter) nor do I participate in any form of gangsterism.
b)Their tactic was sneaky...sly like a fox..and quite trusting...by letting me hold his hp and taking mine at the same time & pretending like I'm some sort of mistaken identity.
c) I was outnumbered, 2 to 1, under the circumstances that if I were to put up a fight and end up on the receiving end(in case they've been practising their 2 in 1 combo or are just as good as me if not better) nobody would even know what's happening cause the sound of raindrops falling down hard like a monsoon successfully drowned the whole incident.
d)I'm no Jackie Chan and if they had a knife with them it'll be a more complicated affair under those environmental conditions.
e) My mistake was passing my mobile to them. If I were to show them my ID,they' probably rob me off my wallet.
f) I quote Sun Tzu's Art of War ..."If equally matched,we can offer battle,if slightly inferior in numbers,we can avoid the enemy;if quite unequal in every way, we can flee from him.
I chose the second one. If they whipped out a knife or gun,I'd go for the third option & flee like a cat to water.
Cos previously a friend of mine (he's well-built & has a taekwondo belt, rank just below black) got mugged while he was walking at nite in the SS15 residence next to Taylor's College. Someone came up to him & tried mugging him with a knife. He quickly made a dash & fled to safety. I asked him why didn't he show his skills & whack the fella ?? He said "my master used to tell me, never show your stuff eventhough you can do it cos 'safety first', and if no other options, then only use it in self-defense to protect yourself".
Moral of the story is, if the same thing were to happen to you in future, you'd know what these individuals are up to cause "I lived to tell the tale"...
At the end of the day, two muggers got washed out under the downpour using wits vs. muscles, and I get to keep my 3310...
Take care folks !
Cheers,
Allan
