What action can I take when the problem is loud machine noise in a residential area?


You can take it up with the local state DOE office.

The Planning Guidelines for Environmental Noise Limits & Control 2004 specifies the following limits under Annex A - Schedule of Permissible sound levels

DT NT
Low density residential 50 40

suburban residential 55 45

urban residential 60 50

commercial buss zones 65 55

designated ind zones 70 60

Unit = dBA
DT = Daytime 7am - 10pm
NT = Nighttime 10pm - 7am

DOSH can also put some pressure on the industrial activity to reduce the noise output.

Reg 15 Noise Exposure Regulations 1989.

Mandatory use of engineering control e.g. silencer/acoustic box etc.
