Next question: While on vacation in Europe, Inspector Smart was touring some of the ancient castles. The tour went up a long flight of stairs, until they came upon a huge wooden door. The guide pulled the door open and shone a light inside. There was a long shaft with four walls ending some 40 meters below. The guide explained that this room had served as a disposal system for those who were out of favour with the castle lord. As the group made their way back down the stairs, they heard a loud scream and a thud. Inspector Smart and the guide ran back to find a suicide note pinned to the large wooden door. They swung the door open and shone a light down the shaft. A woman from the tour lay dead at the bottom. "This was no suicide," declared Inspector Smart, "this was murder." How could he be so certain?

akiyoshi
22-07-2010, 03:38 PM
If it was suicide, after jumping down, the door would remain open :)
Since it was closed, that means somebody pushed the woman and closed that door & pinned the note.

Next question (really easy):

Jack swam up to the bar and ordered a drink. He leaned over to Inspector Apanama and introduced himself. "It sure is great to be back in the city," said Jack. "I just came from the barber who shaved off my four month old beard, and then I ate till I was ready to burst. I've been at sea searching for a sunken Spanish galleon for the last four months, and two days ago I finally found her. With a few thousand dollars I'll secure the salvage rights and bring up a fortune." While gazing at the bathing beauties, Jack rubbed his tanned chin and added, "by the way, if you're interested, for a few grand I could cut you in on a piece of the action."

"Sorry Jack," replied Inspector Apanama. "I'm afraid your credibility is rather low."

Why would Shadow say that?

How can this be? Please explain.
The error is ...
Study + No Study = Study (1 + No)

How can you break up "No Study" to "No (Study)" ?
You are creating mathematical rules out of thin air and the math logic is also flawed.

In reality, "No Study" should be negative of "study"
Hence forth the equation should be ...
Study + No Study = No Fail + Fail
Study + (- Study) = - Fail + Fail
Study (1-1) = Fail (-1 +1)
Study x 0 = Fail x 0
0 = 0

Basically a positive plus a negative cancels everything out la :D :)

Very good logic there! I have another explanation:

Study + No Study = No Fail + Fail
Study - Fail = No Fail - No Study
Study - Fail = -No Study + No Fail
(Study - Fail) = -No (Study - Fail)
1 = -No
No = -1
1+ No = 0

If we apply to the previous formula:

Study = No Fail
No Study = Fail

Therefore:

Study + No Study = No Fail + Fail
Study ( 1 + No ) = Fail ( 1 + No )
Study = Fail

Currymee, the famous magician, turned to Birdy and announced that he would turn water into wine. He went to the fridge, pulled out a tray of ice and filled a wine glass with the cubes. As an afterthought, he took one of the ice cubes from the glass for Birdy to taste. He then put a velvet box over the glass as Birdy crunched the cube, satisfied that it was frozen water. Currymee claimed he had to concentrate on the glass for a period of time to perform this feat. Later, Currymee lifted the box and Birdy drank the contents of the glass. Sure enough, it was wine. How did Currymee do it?

A man was found assassinated in his 53rd floor hotel room which had been locked from within by the dead bolt. He was slouched in a chair in front of one of the windows in the room. The carpet below the window drapes was damp. The only sound in the room was the steady drone of the air conditioner. A bullet had entered the back of his head and was lodged in the base of his skull. It was determined he was shot and killed exactly where he sat, and that the bullet had been fired from well over 30 meters away. The man had been dead for several hours. killer was not in the room - the bullet had been fired from well over 30 meters away ... room cannot be longer than 30 meters

On the 53rd floor, his killer was in the next building ... bullet went through the air-conditioner (window unit) - that was why the floor was damp ... due to air-conditioner's condensation dripping to the floor

technically, if he was shot from a close range, the bullet would have gone thru his head. As the bullet was lodged at the base of the skull, it meant the bullet had lost its momentum by going thru an object - the air-conditioner

are you saying that the air-cond is above the drapes?

kwchang
02-08-2010, 06:32 PM
are you saying that the air-cond is above the drapes?
window unit airconds are sited at the base of the window - carpets below drapes being wet could be due to water from aircond unit which need not be above the drapes.

To have a bullet at the base of the skull and the victim in a seated position would mean the bullet came from below the window level - consistent with a window unit air-cond sited below the window's level. The windows were locked and no glass was broken so no passage through the windows.

However, my answer is not the right one otherwise it would have rung the bell earlier :D

It is not possible for a native to say "One of us is a native." because it was declared in this game that there is 1 native and 1 visitor.
So Sandy must be a visitor since she is telling the truth - Sandy is a visitor

isn't it the same? Isn't 10 power of 2 the same as 10 square?

Sorry la....have given back all the maths knowledge to the school.....

not the same le..

10 power of 2 is 100.
10 square is abt 3.16 (3.16 power of 2, you'd 10 back)
They are opposite:D:D:D

Thinking abt it. I may be wrong too
A bit confused now la..:p

Samy was vacationing in the Middle East. While walking along the shore of the Dead Sea, Samy noticed a body wearing only a bathing suit floating face down in the water. The autopsy reported the cause of death as drowning. There were no physical marks or scars found on the body. It was this noticeable absence of physical damage that caused Samy to be certain the person was murdered and dumped into the sea. What would lead Samy to this conclusion?

Since you can't sink in the dead sea, therefore you can't drown?

When you use large fonts or capitalised and bold, you are shouting on the Internet.

Please do not shout. Get back to normal sized fonts please ... I used to send people to the plantation for shouting :mad:

ps - I was offline since noon ... hence did not see all those loud words

Chang, isn't that we normally will shout out when someone strike the answer? So, what's wrong by shouting out "BINGO"

I wonder if this job of yours have made you judgmental in any way. I agree that using caps is generally considered as rude but I always thought that it depends on the subject matter of the discussion. When people are not seeing eye to eye, caps when used showed a degree of anger, probably disdain or contempt in the thread.

In a game thread such as this, where the underlying objective is entertainment, caps add revelry to the fun and especially so, when somebody have a eureka moment. You shout or clap hands when you rejoice.

You have certainly taken away the fun out of this thread.

I say once again, Chang, I beg to disagree...... :)

come on chang..i think you are being too harsh here..

of course i do agree shouting should not be condoned on the forum but i would think for this thread, it's in the spirit of merriment and fun rather than being rude. can't see how and why you would take offence at that.

Hiya ... come , come next puzzle please :D - don't blame Chang lah, he is supposed to administer the forum dispassionately and robotic in implementing the Rules .... and based on the Rules, it is classified as shouting, even though I understand it is within the context of game in Chatterbox, but Chang cannot be seen or act differently in different sub-forums .... I had this arguments with him before .... I accept his style even though I still think I don't deserve a banana many moons ago for calling Najib a bul**** .... coz he is really ONE !! :p :p :p :D :D

currymee
04-08-2010, 03:29 PM
CORRECT - 43
coz
26 = 5x5 + 1
50 = 7 x 7 + 1
37 = 6 x 6 + 1
17 = 4 x 4 + 1
81 = 9 x 9 + 1

birdy

Got where you are coming from .... you got the answer right.

Except 43, the rest is Square of number plus 1.

26 = 5 x 5 + 1
50 = 7 x 7 + 1
37 = 6 x 6 + 1
17 = 4 x 4 + 1
82 = 9 x 9 + 1

Smartlar you, Umadavid.
