Hillary Clontin and Nancy Bus, two popular politicians, met at a club to discuss the overthrow of another politician. Each ordered a scotch on the rocks. Nancy downed hers and ordered another. She then drank her second in a gulp and decided to wait before she ordered a third. Meanwhile, Hillary, who was sipping her drink, suddenly fell forward dead. Both ladies were setup for an assassination. Why did Hillary die and Nancy live?

Depends if your tree is an old one or a young one.

Old ones don't grow its trunk whereas new ones would. So the answer is 60cm if it is a young tree and none if it is an old tree.

Jeyanthy ~~~ :D ~~~ Just checked my set of encyclopedia. I was about to write 10,000 pages but knew it couldn't be that simple.

Okay, here's the logic :-

# of pages eaten on Vol 1 = 1 (bcos Pg 1 is on the far right of said volume)
# pages eaten from Vol 2 to 9 = 8000
# of pages eaten on Vol 10 = 1 (bcos last page on far left of said volume)
(Sorry, I'm hopeless at long explanations)

Total = 8002

I agree with venus on this argument (I don't have a set of encyclopedia so I cannot say how it is arranged) ... I would say the first volume is on the leftmost end. But where the individual volumes are placed, with the spine facing us, then in the first volume, the pages start from page 1,000 on the left to page 1 on the right.

..A bookworm eats from the first page of an encyclopedia to the last page.. Be careful that page 1&2 are back to back. Hence if worm starts from Vol1,pg1, it cannot eat Vol1,pg1 without eating Vol1,pg2 ... hence it starts from Vol1,Pg1 but does not eat it. Similarly, at the last volume, it cannot eat Vol10,Pg1,000 without destroying Vol10,Pg999 so it needs to stop at 1,000 without eating it as well
By that reasoning, the worm only eats through Vol2-Vol9 (8 volumes) hence 8,000 pages ONLY :D

Great job guys!!!

Published answer:
On a book shelf the first page of the first volume is on the "inside"

.. __......................... __
B|...|.......................|...|F
A| 1 |.......................| 10|R
C|...|.......................|...|O
K|...|.......................|...|N

----------------------------------

So the bookworm eats only through the cover of the first volume, then 8 times 1000 pages of Volumes 2 - 9, then through the cover to the 1st page of Vol 10. He eats 8,000 pages.

Dog would cover 3 meters.

Explanation:
When the man reaches the top, he would have covered 3m, the dog would have covered 1.5m. When he returns, he meets dog after covering 1m, so dog covered 0.5m.
Then he goes down 2m, and dog would have covered 1m.

So total distance covered by dog when the man reaches down is 1.5 + 0.5 + 1 = 3m

Jeyanthy is correct up to the last 1Km

Use common sense la (I am sure Jeyanthy thought the same way but did not mention the directions the dog walked) ...When Forrest meets his dog, the dog will follow him down ... what la, you think the dog will walk up the hill when Forrest is going downhill? Forest Gump may be a bit simple-minded (in the movie) but the dog isn't and thus wouldn't carry on up the hill would he? :D Therefore ...

Forrest walks to peak, dog walks halfway up the hill (=1.5Km)
Forrest walks down and meets dog and since the distance covered by Forrest = 2x and dog walks -x (negative value because of opposite direction) and this gives 1Km + 0.5Km hence dog walked a total of (1.5 + 0.5) 2km when both meet.

Remainder distance downhill at the meeting point is 2Km (distance walked by dog). Since Forrest walks downhill, dog follows and continues till he reaches the bottom of the hill ... Hence total distance walked by dog is 2+2=4Km.

Note, when Forrest reaches the bottom, dog does not stop, what-la, you think the dog will stop? It needs to get to bottom of hill

--Daughter(3).......Son (George)(4)
-------|

1. George is the uncle of Bill and Bill is the nephew of George
2. If Bill marries sister (2), Bill becomes uncle of George and George is Bill's nephew.

This is very possible. My aunt married when she was only 13. My grandama married when she was only 15. At one time they were both pregnant at the same time :eek: Hence, my aunt is younger than her nephews ;)

Two men, A and B marry each other's mother. One son was born to each marriage, in this case, Bill and George. Bill's father is A and his half brother is B. George's father is B and his half brother is A. Therefore Bill and George are both uncle and nephew to each other.

i take it that the castle is surrounded by a square moat..and it's 5m wide and 10m deep.
if it's just a 5x5m sq..then it cannot be called a moat!

The castle is surrounded by the moat, which was described as a huge square with the castle in the middle. the 5 m wide refers to the width of the moat surrounding the castle. By "huge square" they meant that all four sides are equal. The puzzle did come with a little sketch. I thought it was not necessary to post the sketch since the instruction seemed quite clear.

You are right. If it's just a 5 X 5 sq, it cannot be called a moat. But then again, there also won't be any issue of having to cross such a structure without getting wet. Right?

Formula to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit is:
F = 9 x C/5 + 32
= 9 x -40 +32
= -40

So -40 degrees F = -40 degrees C

Naka
06-11-2010, 08:45 AM
C = ( F -32 ) x 5/9
C = (-40 -32 ) x 5/9
C = -72 x 5/9
C = -40 °

F = (9/5 x C ) +32
F = ( 9/5 x -40) +32
F = ( -360/5) +32
F = -72 + 32
F = -40 °

One morning, Merry and Pippin went for a walk on the outskirts of The Shire. By mid afternoon, Merry collected five bushels of dandelion and Pippin collected three. Next, they stopped at Bag's End. Frodo Baggins promised to bake them muffins in exchange for one third of the dandelions picked. Not sure of the fairest way to divide the eight bushels, they put them into 24 baskets, each keeping eight. In exchange for his eight baskets, Frodo made them eight muffins. The problem began when Merry and Pippin disagreed on how to divide the muffins. Merry said he deserved more since he picked five bushels to Pippin's three. Since they each have eight baskets of dandelions, how should the muffins be divided?

Jeyanthy
06-11-2010, 05:08 PM
Originally 24 baskets of dandelion. 1/3 of 24 is 8 given to Frodo. They now have 8 baskets of dandelion each. But that should be divided in the same ratio as they originally picked the dandelions as well. So ratio of Merry and Pippin should still be 5:3.

Merry should get 10 baskets of dandelion and 5 muffins. Pippin should get 6 baskets of dandelion and 3 muffins.

They now have 16 baskets and 8 muffins giving a total of 24 things. Ratio of 5:3 is 15 things to 9 things.

Since Merry already has 8 things, she gets 7 muffins since hers is the higher ratio having collected more dandelions, and Pippin gets 1 muffin to total 9 things.

You are a cook in a remote area with no clocks or other way of keeping time other than a four minute sandglass timer and a seven minute sandglass timer. (The kind you turn over - hourglass shaped) You do have a stove, however, with water in a pot already boiling. Somebody asks you for a nine-minute egg, and you know this person is a perfectionist and will be able to tell if you undercook or overcook the eggs by even a few seconds. What is the least amount of time it will take to prepare the egg? And how will you prepare it so that it is neither undercooked or overcooked?

Dervish
07-11-2010, 07:36 PM
Least time needed to prepare egg is 9 minutes (as established in your question)

Method:
1) Drop egg into boiling water. Invert both sandglass timer.
2) When 4M timer up, invert again. (Time lapsed = 4 mins)
3) When 7M timer up, invert again. (4M timer left 1 min still running. Time lapsed = 7 mins)
4) When 4M timer up at 1 min later, invert 7M timer (Time lapsed = 8 mins)
5) 7M timer once inverted runs only for 1 min and when this ends, total time = 9 mins.

Wow! You are a real fan of numbers, aren't you? Did you major in Mathematics?

Published Answer:
The next number in the sequence is 1113213211, because the rule for creating the next number is to simply describe the previous number. For example, you start of with 1, with is simply one 1, so the next number is 11. Now you have two 1's, so the next number is 21. Now you have one 2 and one 1, so the next number is 1211. The solution is to simply continue describing the previous number using only numbers.

Forrest Gump was on a hunting vacation. One day he left camp and headed south. At about half a km, he saw a bear, but it disappeared. After another half km, he spotted the bear again. The bear saw him and headed east. Half a km later, Forrest caught up with the bear, only to realize he hadn't loaded his gun. The bear continued east. Forrest followed. Half a km later, he spotted the bear, took aim, shot, missed and cursed. Disgusted, Forrest walked the one km north to his camp to sulk in solitude. What colour was the bear?

The bear was black and it was getting dark and it was a moonless night, so it would be difficult to track the bear and shoot him. So Gump headed back to his camp.

BTW, Venus, only Chang deserved the stamp for the previous puzzle if that was the published answer.

Wait a minute.... He had gone 1 km down south, 0.5 km east and then 1 km north. So he still has to go 0.5 km west right???? This can only happen if its done on a circle. So where is Forest Gump? Could it be in North or South poles? So the bear is a polar bear and it's white????

Krishna, Balaram and Sudama, truthfully report their grades to their dad, Nanda Maharaj as follows:

Krishna says, " If I got through Archery, then so did Balaram. I got through Wrestling if and only if Sudama did. Each of us got through at least one subject."

Balaram says, "If I got through Archery than so did Krishna. Krishna did not get through Sword Fighting. Each subject was passed by at least one of us three."

Sudama passed less subjects than any one of the other 2, and since K failed on the swords, the max K can pass is 2.. so Sudama can only pass 1 subject ... OK, see how far you can extrapolate from there

If you give RM2
a) he may give RM3 --> he must also give RM1 for the bet, so net you make is RM2
b) he may give nothing --> you have to give RM1, so you loose a total of RM3

It's a small amount to loose or make, take the bet for the fun of it....

How is this scenario:
Since the bet is only RM1, you will gain RM1 if he takes up the offer. He gives you RM2, you pay him RM1 for the bet and pocket the other RM1. Since you only bet him RM1, he cannot demand that you pay him RM3.

No. This is a situation where you lose even if you win. Assuming the other person is being wise, they would take your RM2 and say, "I lose", and give you RM1 in return. You win the bet, but you're out RM1.

Now I see :D
"I will bet you RM1 that if you give me RM2, I will give you RM3 in return. Do you think it is wise to take on this bet? "

The options are whether "I will give you RM3 in return or not"

Option 1:
If I don't give you RM3, You get -RM2(your original money) + RM1 (you win) = -RM1 (So you loose one RM1) although you actually win the bet

Option 2:
If I give RM3, You get -RM2 (your original money) + RM3 - RM1 (you loose) = 0 (you loose the bet but no money is lost)

There are only 2 likely ladies in the turquoise saree (Y or P)
P, who agreed with the turquoise saree lady, therefore can't be wearing turquoise. Therefore Y should be the turquoise lady.
If Y is the turquoise lady, then P must be the yellow lady.
That leaves T who had to be the Purple lady.
~~~ Process of elimination.
My guess is:
Y = Turquoise saree
P = Yellow Saree
T = Purple Saree
Clouseau said, "About two hours ago, the 'Purple Cow Arcade' was robbed. Apparently, the robber's description fits you" Edmund laughed as he laid back on the hood of his pickup truck. "I just returned in this truck from Sweet Cove just ten minutes ago. That is over 600 km away and you know it. You can call the friend I was visiting if you like. She'll verify my story." Clouseau looked at his watch and said, "It's 4 pm now. What time did you leave Sweet Cove?" Edmund checked his watch and replied, "I guess it must have been about 7 am."
"You're obviously lying," accused Clouseau. Why?
Ram wanted to marry the king's daughter, Sita. The king didn't like the idea of his daughter marrying a pauper, but he wanted to appear fair in front of his subjects. The king said that he would put two pieces of paper into a box, one reading "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" and the other reading "TO BE WED".
Later that day, the pauper overheard the king saying that both pieces of paper would read "OFF WITH HIS HEAD", thus ensuring that the pauper would be out of his way for good.
The pauper remained undaunted and, as arranged, arrived at the king's court where a large crowd gathered for the big event. The pauper then did something that assured him the hand of the king's daughter. What did he do?
Total of half, one third and one ninth does not equal to one. So there is some fraction left.
He gives his horse to the wives and says whatever horses left will be his.
So the first wife get half of 18 = 9 horses
The second wife gets one third of 9 = 3 horses
The third wife gets one ninth of 9 = 1 horse
Remainder horses 18 - (9+3+1) = 5 horses which now belongs to Wyatt Earp.
Total of half, one third and one ninth does not equal to one. So there is some fraction left.
He gives his horse to the wives and says whatever horses left will be his.
So the first wife get half of 18 = 9 horses
The second wife gets one third of 9 = 3 horses
The third wife gets one ninth of 9 = 1 horse
Remainder horses 18 - (9+3+1) = 5 horses which now belongs to Wyatt Earp.
sorry, incorrect. ;)
Just a small math error in the first solution
So, quickly -
Wyatt gives his horse to the wives to make it 18
So the first wife get half of 18 = 9 horses
The second wife gets one third of 18 = 6 horses
The third wife gets one ninth of 18 = 2 horses
That is 9+6+2=17
Wyatt takes back his horse and they all lived happily ever after ! :D
Edmund Blackadder, the editor of "USJ Today", returned to his office to find Clouseau waiting for him. "Your co-editor, Murphy Brown, was found dead in the parking lot," said Clouseau. "Her handbag has been rifled and all that's left behind is her business card." "Oh no!" cried Edmund. "It must be those foreigners I saw hanging around in the parking lot this morning." Just then, Clouseau noticed a private message on Edmund's computer screen. It read: Dear Edmund, I know we had plans to work on our "Save Subang Ria Report" at 1:00 pm and I apologize for any inconveniance my temporary absence will cause. I had to return to the restarant immedietely since I forgot to pay my tab. Signed, M. Brown. "This wasn't a chance mugging," said Clouseau, "this was pre-meditated murder!" Why did Clouseau make this statement?
Finally!...I think I know. the message was not typed by M Brown as she couldn't have made such gross spelling errors in her message to EB. She IS his co-editor! It must be the murderer who typed it.....Betul ka? :p :p
The murderer seemed to know about the meeting as well. So it could have been planned by Edmund himself :eek: Plus, Edmund should have been in the office if the meeting was to take place then....
Clouseau received a call from USJ university women's residence, regarding a suspected prowler. The Assistant Head accompanied him as he inspected every room in the residence. At the end of his inspection, Clouseau surmised that the subject was probably on the 5th floor and quite likely a friend of the girl in 5C. Several minutes later, another officer found the intruder and confirmed Clouseau's suspicion. What clue led Clouseau to suspect the intruder to likely be a guest on the 5th floor?
He found something that can only belong to a guy in room 5C. Since there was no forced entry into the room, the guy was probably a friend of the girl in that room.
This is an unlikely state in a
women's residence. A prowler
would not stop to use the washroom,
but an invited guest (Boyfriend) would.
