But where the individual volumes are placed, with the spine facing us, then in the first volume, the pages start from page 1,000 on the left to page 1 on the right.

The castle is surrounded by the moat, which was described as a huge square with the castle in the middle. the 5 m wide refers to the width of the moat surrounding the castle. By "huge square" they meant that all four sides are equal. The puzzle did come with a little sketch. I thought it was not necessary to post the sketch since the instruction seemed quite clear.

You are right. If it's just a 5 X 5 sq, it cannot be called a moat. But then again, there also won't be any issue of having to cross such a structure without getting wet. Right?

Wow, Jeyanthy ~~~ Thanks for this old classic. The 'original' puzzle BTW was my very first 'matching puzzle' and I tackled it, let's see ~~~ when I was still in my primary school, either Primary 5 or 6. It was tough back then but it's such a good workout. When you finally get the answer, it gives you such a sense of achievement.

So this time, I'll let the others try. Those who haven't tried this sort of puzzle before should begin with this one.

Later that day, the pauper overheard the king saying that both pieces of paper would read "OFF WITH HIS HEAD", thus ensuring that the pauper would be out of his way for good.

The pauper remained undaunted and, as arranged, arrived at the king's court where a large crowd gathered for the big event. The pauper then did something that assured him the hand of the king's daughter. What did he do?
