There are one thousand lockers and one thousand students in the school.

The principal asks the first student to go to every locker and open it. Then he has the second student go to every second locker and close it. The third goes to every third locker and, if it is closed, he opens it, and if it is open, he closes it. The fourth student does this to every fourth locker, and so on.

After the process is completed with the thousandth student, how many lockers are open?
This principal must be too free with nothing better to do.
If the closing and opening of the locker is 2 different actions, then
2a should be less than or equal to 1000 (i.e the times the locker swing)
So, how many lockers open in the end?

My guess is 500.

If 31 is the answer,
maybe it's

square root of 1000 = 31.62, round off to 31?
You got it! But let me explain the logic behind ....

The only lockers that remain open are perfect squares (1, 4, 9, 16, etc) because they are the only numbers divisible by an odd number of whole numbers; every factor other than the number's square root is paired up with another. Thus, these lockers will be "changed" an odd number of times, which means they will be left open. All the other numbers are divisible by an even number of factors and will consequently end up closed.

So the number of open lockers is the number of perfect squares less than or equal to one thousand. These numbers are one squared, two squared, three squared, four squared, and so on, up to thirty one squared. (Thirty two squared is greater than one thousand, and therefore out of range.) So the answer is thirty one.

An Arab sheikh is old and must will his fortune to one of his two sons. He makes a proposition. His two sons will ride their camels in a race, and whichever camel crosses the finish line last will win the fortune for its owner. During the race, the two brothers wander aimlessly for days, neither willing to cross the finish line. In desperation, they ask a wise man for advice. He tells them something; then the brothers leap onto the camels and charge toward the finish line. What did the wise man say?

Switch camels. ie ride the other brother's camel so that if he reach the finish line first, it means that his camel finish later and wins the fortune.

Danick and his wife invited four other couples to a party. During the course of the conversation, it is discovered that, prior to the party, each person except Danick was acquainted with a different number of the people present.

Assuming the acquaintance relationship is symmetric (i.e., if he is acquainted with someone, that person is also acquainted with him), then how many people did Danick's wife know prior to the party? How many people did Danick know then?

Start with the assumption that everybody knows their own spouses -- which means that everybody there knew at least one person. Discounting Danick, everyone knows a different number of people, which means that (again, discounting Danick) one person knows one, one person knows two, one person knows three, etc., up to one person who knows nine people (everybody else). Number the people (besides Danick) according to how many people they know, so that person 1 is the one who knows one person, person 2 is the one who knows two people, etc.

Now pair up people with their spouses. If person 9 knows everybody else, s/he must be the only person who knows person 1, because person 1 only knows one person. So they must be married. Person 8 knows everybody except for person 1. Person 2 therefore knows person 8 and person 9. Person 9 is married to person 1, so person 2's spouse must be person 8. Person 7 knows everybody except for persons 1 and 2. Person 3 therefore knows persons 7, 8, and 9. Persons 8 and 9 are married to persons 2 and 1 respectively, so person 3's spouse must be person 7. Person 6 knows everybody except for persons 1, 2, and 3. Person 4 therefore knows persons 6, 7, 8, and 9. The only one of those not yet paired up is person 6, so person 4 and person 6 must be married.

This leaves person 5, who knows everyone except persons 1, 2, 3, and 4. These five people, therefore, must be persons 6, 7, 8, 9, and you. Since Danick is the only one of these five not yet paired up, person 5 must be his spouse. So his spouse knew five people prior to the party.

The above also determines that the people who know Danick are persons 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. So Danick knew five people prior to the party also.

The first 1000 will create extra 100 candles
The next 100 candles will create addtional 10 candles
The last 10 candles will create another 1 candle

So, the total candles that could be made will be 100 + 10 + 1 = 111  ;)

In Mensa puzzles, there are usually no
single correct answer, only the individual
logic that comes with it.
Other factors like age and exposure etc
usually influences your IQ.
Since your choice is logical, I have to
agree that your answer is also correct.
However, the published correct answer is
"D". At each stage, when the same circle
appears twice, both disappear and are

In Mensa puzzles, there are usually no
single correct answer, only the individual
logic that comes with it.
Other factors like age and exposure etc
usually influences your IQ.
Since your choice is logical, I have to
agree that your answer is also correct.
However, the published correct answer is
"D". At each stage, when the same circle
appears twice, both disappear and are
replaced by two different symbols.

Yes, answer D is correct as per your explanation :)

A chief of detectives had three likely candidates for an opening in his department. To test their powers of reasoning, he pulled out a red and black marker and told them, "I am going to either make a red or black mark on each of your foreheads. At least one will be black. Without any help other than your own reasoning skills, I want you to determine the color of the mark on your own forehead. The first to do this and give me a satisfactory explanation at how you arrived at a conclusion will get the job."

He then blindfolded the candidates and proceeded to put a black mark on each of their foreheads. After he removed the blindfolds, the three stared at each other for a few seconds, each seeing that the other two marks were black, then one of the candidates said, "I have a black mark."

How did the candidate arrive at this conclusion?

Each saw that the other two marks were black. Therefore there can only be two possibilities: -

1) 2 black 1 red OR
2) All black

If anyone of them saw 1 black and 1 red, he would deduce that his own is black. If the other 2 is black, his will also be black. Therefore his mark must be black.

I think there is a flaw in the deduction ...

...At least one will be black...

Each saw that the other two marks were black. Therefore there can only be two possibilities: -

1) 2 black 1 red OR
2) All black

(a)If anyone of them saw 1 black and 1 red, he would deduce that his own is black. If the other 2 is black, his will also be black. Therefore his mark must be black.
(b)If anyone saw 1 black and 1 red, how can he conclude that his must be black? "At least 1 Black" could mean BBB, BBR, BRR

Therefore
seeing BB means BBB, BBR (as given by Venuspop part b)
seeing BR means BRB, BRR (not as concluded by Venuspop part a)
.. or did I miss something there?

Let us agree that since there are two blacks, it can only be BBB or BBR. BRR is out of the question.

If he sees B and R, he can conclude that he's a B (BBR). However, since he saw B and B, you are right, he could be a B or a R.

If he is a R, there would be some reaction from the other 2 person, right? They would deduce that they are B. Since the other 2 didn't respond quickly, it follows that they themselves are not sure if they are B or R. That being the case, he had to be B.

God I hate long explanations. I get so confused reading my own explanation. I wonder if it makes sense....

OK la, he is either holding "b", "q" or "9"

As for the BBR thing, your last answer is very clear and better than the first one - the crux of the matter is that there cannot be a RR because the 3rd person will know he is B

A better explanation:
The winning candidate reasoned as follows: If I saw two red marks, I would immediately jump up and say mine is black since at least one is black. If I saw a red and a black mark, and the one with the black mark did not immediately jump up and say, "mine is black", then I could assume I do not have a red mark. Since both of these candidates are smart, they must be facing the same situation as I, and all three of us have black marks. :D

20 g is very light. The truck would have used some of its oil when driving to the mid-point of the bridge, at least 20g. So the bridge didn't collapse.

Finally, from the master neck-wringer !!

I said "pack" buy did not say where (my apologies) ... but anyone should have figured out that if I needed to bring 3 pairs of pants, I wasn't going on an overnight trip, henceforth I must have a check-in bag as well. That's where most people would pack their clothes. NOT in the carry-on bag - that's where I keep my reading materials, toiletries, medication and the notebook.

By the way, Venuspop was right about 3 pants (that's why I said it was half-correct). The gramma part was the red-herring ... couldn't resist the opportunity to strike when you were all distracted with grammar - that's how magicians work their illusions :D

Each of her four suitors were put in one corner of the room with a small box to stand on. The first one to touch the Princess' hand would be the winner and become the new King.

The rules were the contestants could not walk over the carpet, cross the plane of the carpet, or hang from anything; nor could they use anything but their body and wits (i.e. no magic, telepathy, nor any items such as ladders, block and tackles etc). One suitor figured out a way and married the Princess and became the new King. What did he do?
