Shadow and his men searched the frozen tundra for escaped convit Sid Shady. Just as they were about to give up, one of Shadow's men spotted a body. Shady was found lying dead in the snow. There were no tracks leading to or from the body. The cause of death was partially due to the unopened pack on his back. Shady did not die of thirst, hunger or cold.
What was in Shady's pack that led to his death?

Edward Blackadder hailed a cab. While being driven to his destination, he started chattering non-stop to the driver. The cabbie realized that Edward would not shut up so he resorted to an old cab driver's trick. He looked into his rear view mirror and said, "I'm sorry mister. I can't hear a word you're saying. My hearing aid broke down this morning. I'm quite deaf even when it's working, but believe me, when it's not working, I'm totally deaf." At his destination, Edward paid the fare and got out. A few moments later, Edward realized the cab driver had lied to him about his hearing problem. How did Edward know the driver was lying?

Initially I use a mathematical formula:
Ham born= HB, Ham died = HD, Sargon born = SB, Sargon died = SD

SD-HB=120
(HD-HB) + (SD-SB) = 100
HD = 40BC
With the 3 equations, we get SB = 40BC+20 years = 20BC

However, on hindsight, really we do not need any equations as we were told that the combined age that they died is 100 years and the difference between the year Sargon died and Ham born is 120years, so logically Sargon had to be born 20 years after the year Ham died ie 20 years later than 40BC. Hope the above make sense.

What the rationale behind?
Well, Birdy, lly is probably gone by now so I'll answer on her behalf.

If the first statement is true, then so is the last statement, which cannot be, since there is only one true statement. Also, if the last statement is true, then so is the second statement. Since we know that two statements cannot be correct, we can disregard both the first and the third statements. This leaves us with only the middle statement. If John owns any cars at all, it will make the third statement correct, so the only number of cars that John can own is zero. Hope this answers your question.

Let Uma's share be U, Akiyoshi's be A and Xinrong's be X
Then, 2/3U = 8
Hence U=8/2X3=12 which is 2/3A

You did not say if he took multiple crossings ... but I take it that crossing with all the gold could mean a single trip? I am tempted to say he juggled the 3 gold bars, hence only 2 were in his hands at any one time while the 3rd was in the air (thus only 80Kg was contributing to the total weight at any one time) but Copperfield is a magician, not a juggler :)

But the force when it is coming down will add on the weight .. :p I am speaking from logic only .. I am not good with my Physics either. I stand to be corrected. Let's move on ....

Here is a new puzzle :-

A man awoke one morning to find that he had a flat tire. Undaunted, he
immediately drove the car 100 miles to his destination and then
back again without changing or fixing the tire. How is this possible?

Yes, F = ma. I remembered this formula like the back of my hand. Birdy is however also correct, in that, the fallen gold will increase the total weight to 81 kg so logically, the bridge will collapse.
But no, (just reread Birdy's post) the falling gold cannot be more than 1 kg  How can? Mass is constant!

When dealing with Physics, we must remember the laws of physics ... cannot rely on "logic" because then you bring in perceived ideas which are not correct. That is why many students do poorly in Physics, when they do not stick to the laws.

Clouseau approached Blackadder and said, "I have reasons to believe you are the man responsible for the holdup at the "Purple Cow Tavern" two hours ago. You fit the description given by several key witnesses. They described a man who had been drinking heavily before robbing several customers and fleeing the scene."

"Of course I'm drunk. I happen to be a professional wine taster and I've been plying my trade for the last five hours."

Clouseau studied Blackadder and questioned, "What time is it now?" Blackadder replied, "It happens to be 7-30 pm." Clouseau continued, "Tell me then, approximately what time did you start working?" Blackadder looked at his watch and replied, "2-30 pm." "You're obviously lying," accused Clouseau. Why?

Edmund Blackadder took DCI Barnaby up to his study and told his story. "I was away on business for the day. I got home about 7:00 this evening to see the ex-heavyweight boxer, Cassia Clay, sliding down a rope outside my house. He saw me and ran off. He must have broken into the house, alarmed my dog, and found his only escape was out the window. My priceless stamp collection is gone."
Barnaby looked around the study for clues. A magnifying glass and a pair of tweezers lay on the heavy desk. The rope, which was tied around one of the desk's legs, led out the window and down the side of the house. Just as Barnaby's partner climbed onto the end of the rope, the desk slid away from the wall revealing one of Blackadder's priceless stamps.
Barnaby picked it up and said, "You can hide this one with the rest of them. The insurance company won't believe this act."

Why not?

If the desk could slide away from the wall under Barnaby's partner's weight, that means the rope was tied by Edmund and not used since if Cassia is a ex-heavyweight boxer, he should be pretty hefty...

2nd sale is 1/4Y+1/2, balance 1/4Y-1.5 etc
at the end of it just add up the sales to be equal Y and solve the math.

Maybe it was aeroplane/helicopter cabin...so they were crash victims. They crashed landed and died there so as they did not climb up the mountain, Mike and fellows were indeed the first to climb up the summit.

This being Monday, let's have us a real easy puzzle:

Edmund Blackadder has a cottage situated on a well treed lot in Northern Ontario. He enjoys keeping his lot in top condition by fertilizing, pruning and removing deadwood and broken branches. However, Edmund has a rather strange habit regarding his little forest. Every once in a while he'll chop down a perfectly healthy tree and put it in a large pot. He'll water the tree and fertilize it etc. and a short time later when he grows tired of it, he burns it. Could there be any rational explanation for this seemingly strange behavior?

Clouseau watched in horror as the convertible sports car seemed to lose control. It crashed through the guard rail, causing the driver to be thrown out of the car and down a 60 meter cliff. Clouseau scrambled down the incline to the body. The bloodied driver was pronounced dead. About ten meters away the car lay on its side. Clouseau examined the car and immediately noticed several things; the buckle from the driver's seat belt was missing, the driver's seat was covered in fresh blood, and one of the four new tires was punctured by a large nail. Clouseau was certain the driver had not been killed in the car accident, but was already dead. Why?

Totoro2010
04-10-2010, 12:56 PM
because when the car crashing, the driver has been thrown out of the car, the driver's seat couldn't be covered in fresh blood

A donkey travels a certain distance each day. Strangely enough, two of its legs travel 20 kilometers each day and the other two legs travel nearly 21 kilometers. It would seem that two of the donkey's legs must be almost a kilometer ahead of the other two legs, but of course this is not the case. Since the horse is quite normal, how is this situation possible?

Edmund Blackadder owns a vacation house in northern Ontario which has an A-shaped roof. One side of the roof faces north and the other side faces south. The prevailing winds from the north are usually quite strong. The strange thing is that the stronger the north wind blows, the stronger the resulting updraft on the south side of the roof. Therefore, if a rooster was to lay an egg on the peak of the roof during a strong northerly wind, on which side should the egg fall most of the time?

Dr Cuddy was found lying in her car, dead from a bullet wound just above her heart. Her right hand, firmly clutching a small hand gun, lay at her side. Clouseau examined the gun, and determined that it was the weapon used. After a quick examination of the body, Clouseau guessed that Dr Cuddy had bled to death over a period of about 30 minutes. A suicide note was found next to her body. Clouseau had the note analyzed and confirmed that it had been written by the left-handed Dr Cuddy. The coroner reported that death was caused by extensive bleeding from the bullet wound, and that she bled to death over a period of about 20 minutes. Clouseau was certain this was a case of murder and not suicide. Why is murder suspected?

David Cornfield, the famous magician, was standing in an empty room in which two very thin ropes were hanging from the ceiling. These two ropes were just far enough apart from each other that if David held one of them by its end and reached for the other it would still be a half meter beyond his reach. Using only a knife, David Cornfield was able to tie the ends of the two ropes together and still leave them attached to the ceiling. How?

Tie 1 end of the rope to the knife point, David's hand then hold on to the knife handle while the other hand will hold on to the second rope. :)

Ropes hang vertically from the ceiling. In reality, if both ropes can be brought together, they will touch and so David can tie a knot. Since if David was to grab the end of one rope, and walk to the other rope, he will not reach it as the other rope is hanging vertically downwards.

I see that the knife is used as a weight. Tie one of the ropes to the knife. Then set the rope in a pendulum swing (knife is the weight, so it acts as the pendulum). Run and get the other rope and bring it to the swinging rope and grab the end when the pendulum gets near enough to catch it. :D :)

ps - Thinking out of the box, that's the trick

Danick has been sentenced to death in an obscure foreign country which has a strange law. Before the sentence is carried out, two papers -- one with "LIFE" written on it and one with "DEATH" written on it -- are folded up and placed in a hat.

You are asked to pick out one of the papers (without looking), and if you chooses the one with "LIFE" written on it, he will be set free. Otherwise, the death sentence is carried out.

On this occasion, a mean-spirited acquaintance of yours, bent on your demise, has substituted the paper with "LIFE" written on it with another one with "DEATH" written on it. This person gleefully informs you of what he has done and that Danick is doomed to die.

You are not permitted to speak to anyone about this misdeed, nor will you have a chance to switch the papers or the hat in time. Knowing that Dancik is innocent, how would you prevent the certain death?

Ask someone else to pick one and as it will say "Death" - you can say that the other paper in the hat should say "Life" so Danick is free to go.

There are one thousand lockers and one thousand students in the school.

The principal asks the first student to go to every locker and open it. Then he has the second student go to every second locker and close it. The third goes to every third locker and, if it is closed, he opens it, and if it is open, he closes it. The fourth student does this to every fourth locker, and so on.

After the process is completed with the thousandth student, how many lockers are open?
