Three people check into a hotel. They pay $30 to the manager and go to their room. The manager suddenly remembers that the room rate is $25 and gives $5 to the bellboy to return to the people. On the way to the room the bellboy reasons that $5 would be difficult to share among three people so he pockets $2 and gives $1 to each person.
Now each person paid $10 and got back $1. So they paid $9 each, totalling $27. The bellboy has $2, totalling $29.
Where is the missing $1?
Dervish
24-08-2010, 11:15 AM
The hotel collects $25. $3 refunded to all three men. Bellhop kept $2. Everything ties up.
As for the missing $1, The hotel bill is $25. Divided by 3, each only needs to pay $8.33333 (i.e overpaid by $0.66666666). Since they got a refund of $1, each actually benefited by $0.333. ie. all three men benefited by $0.33 X 3 = missing $1 ....discount given by hotel, maybe. :)

Or if we look at it differently....
The three men paid an initial deposit amounting to $30.
Since they get a refund of $3, their actual cost is $27.
Of this $27, $25 goes to the hotel and $2 goes to the bellhop.
There is no missing $1
You can't add the $2 back to the $27 because it came from there.
The question is flawed, IMHO

Great thinking and you are right!
We have to be careful what we are adding together. Originally, they paid $30, they each received back $1, thus they now have only paid $27. Of this $27, $25 went to the manager for the room and $2 went to the bellboy. Question is not flawed. Our thinking is...Wide grin :D ;) :D

Rate of flow is volume/time. Volume is π (pi)x radius sq x height.
The Time here is constant and therefore whichever the higher radius (diameter in this case) it's emptying faster.
Therefore the 2 centimeter single outlet will empty faster.
Hope my explanation is ok

Yes, Peter, you've got the correct formula. Just want to clarify. You mentioned that the rate depends on the radius and therefore concludes that the 2 cm single outlet empties faster.
Are you saying that the other tank with contains TWO one cm circular drain outlets empties slower or did you miss that out?

If circular means circumference of tap, then the tank with two one cm circular drain outlets will drain faster - 2 times faster than the one with a one two cm circular drain outlet.
r = Small pipe radius = 1/2pi
R = Big pipe radius = 1/pi
Area of small pipe = 1/4pi
Area of big pipe = 1/pi
2 times area of small pipe = 1/2pi
Hence 1 big pipe flows 2 times faster than 2 small pipes since time and height of pipe is constant.

Billy Bob recounted the events of the last several hours. "I knocked on Doctor Sheik's door, and when there was no answer, I let myself in. I have a key you know. With the temperature at 20 degrees below zero, I was just going to warm up and leave a note before I walked back home. Just as I opened the front door I heard a noise in the den. I went straight there and saw a woman across the room removing jewelry from the safe. The next thing I knew I woke up with a splitting headache. My broken glasses lay on the floor beside me. First I phoned the police, then I called my optometrist. I'm as blind as a bat without my glasses. I'd be happy to stop by the police station later on and go through your photo file."
Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby replied, "That won't be necessary. It's obvious your story is a total fabrication."
What's wrong with Billy's story?

Blackadder, the notorious jewel thief, lay dead by the side of the tracks. He had been on a train, west bound from Calgary to Vancouver. The train had passed by this spot an hour earlier at approximately 6:30 pm. Inspector Clouseau quickly examined the body then slipped his sun glasses on and walked towards the sinking sun and the luggage containing Blackadder's clothes. Further down the tracks, Clouseau found another bag containing money and jewelry. "Looks like Blackadder was about to be robbed and jumped to escape," noted Officer Rob Roy. "It's most obvious that our Mr Blackadder did not leave the train voluntarily, if he was even alive when he left," stated Clouseau. Why does Clouseau feel this way?

The answer has to be 'A' or 'C'... since the answer not 'C', then it has to be 'A' :D Frankly speaking, I don't know how to explain for the sequencing but I think I got the symbol boxes correct.
There are several explanation for the sequence. I think I'll try my own which seemed simpler to me. We have 3 symbols i.e. triangle, hat and door? (Don't know how to describe so keeping it simple).
The triangle moves from left to right until it reaches extreme right (3). Then it stops. Next to move in same sequence is the hat. Therefore, my answer agrees with yours, i.e. "A"
The actual answer summarizes like this:-
The quadrilaterals and the symbols are two separate sequences. Quadrilateral moves from right to left. Symbols move in same sequence but from left to right.
You got the boxes correct and I got the symbols correct so between the two of us (if you don't mind I share-share a little bit of your glory), we are

12:30 ; 1 chime but not sure 1:00 or a 12:30 min chime.

"On The Run" always reminded me of the poem I wrote when I was in my teens. :D
Anyway, Akiyoshi, the noon chime should be 12 chimes, and not one. The clock also chimes each quarter hour.

oops, read wrongly thought it was half-hourly chime. Will think again.
Oooh .. u were one literary-minded teenager. What was it like ? "On the run."
On the run looking for one's identity, or a love poem, something like that ?
Share-share lah.

so, not 1 hour 29mins ?
No, I didn't say 12noon chime was 1 chime.
By the time, all that 12 dingdong finished, it could be around 12:01,
quiet and all. So, 12:01 - 1:30 is 1 hour 29 mins.
Oooh .. u were one literary-minded teenager. What was it like ? "On the run."

OK, let's give
you a
Bingo!
Actually, you would have to
wait 90 minutes from 12-15 (1st chime)
(remember you heard the
first chime from
the other room?)
to 1-45.
Once you have heard
seven single chimes
you would know that
the next chime would be
two chimes for 2 o'clock.
The clock chimes every
quarter hour.
"On The Run" was about a silly man and his silly girlfriend doing silly things together. No, nothing suggestive at all. Teenagers, during my time, were quite 'upright'. It was published in a local paper no longer in circulation. Somebody pin it up at a notice board in ITM. One of my classmates pin it up on our class notice board at the back of the class. My form teacher was very pleased and kept smiling at me thereafter. Just the silly things silly teenagers write about..:D

"I climbed over the wall and jumped down onto the grounds of the Wayne estate," gasped Blackadder. "I looked up and noticed a light on in the attic, where I could see Mr Alfred bound hand and foot. Just then a masked man ran past the attic window. I recognized him from the wanted posters. I no longer thought of robbing the estate. I just wanted to help Mr Alfred. After all, I couldn't just leave him lying there on the attic floor. I'm no murderer you know. I entered the house and ran up the four flights of stairs to the attic but Mr Alfred was already dead, and the guy I saw was gone. Since there was nothing I could do I started to leave and that's when you grabbed me." Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby declared, "That's a story nobody will believe!" What's wrong with the story?

The tension in the poker game was building rapidly among Bilbo, Frodo, Golum, Merry and Pippin. Suddenly, Bilbo lunged at Golum and began pummeling him. Frodo jumped up and pulled Bilbo off his victim. On the card table there were five hands and each had three cards face up. One hand contained a king, a queen, and an ace. There were two aces and a king in the next hand, and three jacks in the third. Two queens and an ace made up the fourth hand, while two kings and an ace made up the fifth. Golum had dealt the last hand. Bilbo accused Golum of cheating. Why?

Blackadder repeated his story for the police report. "I was standing on Main Street watching the people pass by, when this "ape" comes running at me swinging a pool cue. That's when I started to run. Detective Sergeant Troy saw us running and he grabbed me. This guy chasing me said I hit his manager over the head and robbed the till at the 'Purple Cow' arcade. It couldn't have been me since I've never been to the 'Purple Cow' or even heard of it before now. I went back to the arcade with the sergeant, and some of the customers said I might be the guy, but they couldn't be certain." After Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby read the above report, he stated, "Blackadder is definitely guilty." How could he know?

"Try that story on Professor Dumbledore," said Lucius Malfoy's teacher, Professor McGonagall. Malfoy stood before Dumbledore and began, "I was on my way to school, and I cut through the park like I always do. Since I was early, I sat down on abench to rest. I put my essay in my lunch bag, and set it beside me. Just then I noticed a black squirrel run past and scamper up a nearby tree. He was halfway up the tree when he suddenly froze and slowly backed down the tree trunk before taking off. I was curious to see what had frightened him so I looked up the tree and saw a red scarf. I climbed up to get it and just then a big dog grabbed my lunch bag with my essay in it, and ran off." Dumbledore sighed and replied, "Malfoy, you can't possibly expect me to believe that one can you?" Why not?
