Forrest Gump was going for a cross-country run for several months. He asked his friend, Jenny to watch for a certain letter he was expecting. The problem Jenny faced was that Forrest had a mail-slot and forgot to leave her a house key. Jenny sent Forrest a letter to inform him of her dilemma. Forrest immediately sent a key to his house by return mail. Jenny was still unable to honour Forrest's request. Why?

Dervish

If you're asking about the rusting object, here's the explanation:-

What happens when iron rusts is that the outside of it, which is exposed to the air, corrodes or oxidizes. A certain amount of oxygen of the air is added to the iron. This oxygen, like everything else, has weight, and its weight (actually relative atomic mass of 15.9994) must be added to that of the iron itself when the iron is rusty. Therefore the iron increases in weight.

Dear Naka,

If you have seven children, half will be 3.5 children, which is impossible? So this must be a neck-wringer. And Venuspop already gave that hint by including the "nw" in his post.

So thinking out of the box, we have to assume they were all girls. Half of them were girls and the other half also girls.

Cyrus, the Virus, the notorious convict had been thrown into jail. While appearing to be busy writing his dastardly memoirs, he is quietly planning his escape. His cell, which is 40 meters above ground level is on the fourth floor. Cyrus managed to remove one of the bars from the window, enabling him to squeeze through. He has a rope 20 meters in length and he knew that a fall of 20 meters to the ground would be fatal. Aside from the bars on his cell window, there is nothing else above or below, where he could fasten the rope. However, using just that, Cyrus was able to escape safely. How did he do that?

I'd suspect someone pushing or pulling a sled and after the position of the body, the killer went off on the sled. Hence the disappearance of the footprints... or maybe a vehicle knocked down the deceased and went off - hit & run episode?

The set of footprints which ran between the parallel tracks are Kelly's. That's why there are no footsteps after the body where the crime took place.

My dad used a wheel chair, so I know a bit how it is used. Yes, he can use his hands to turn the wheels. But he cannot put the wheelchair back into the car boot by himself although he can drive by himself. So if he wanted to go to a place by car someone need to at least help him put the wheel chair back in the car and take it out as well.

Each piece would weigh just less
than a quarter of a pound. (The sawdust
created from the cut would cause the loss)
This is similar to the situation that appeared
in Shakepeare's "The Merchant of Venice". When
Shylock won a pound of Antonio's flesh, he was
alloted only the pound of flesh. This meant he
could take no blood or even a fraction more
than one pound of flesh.

Arjuna received a tip that the "Holy Land" charter was about to be hijacked by one of the passengers on board. Arjuna instructed airline security to delay the flight while he conducted his investigation. Since the passengers had already boarded, the airline decided to feed them lunch. Arjuna read the passenger list and began his interviews. Among those questioned were two farmers from Scotland, a nun from Amsterdam, a minister from Australia, a Hindu priest, two artists from Paris, and a Japanese businessman. After several minutes of interviewing, Arjuna approached the stewardess and inquired about the dinner they were serving. "We're serving roast beef sandwiches, and it's a good thing we did," she added. "Every passenger not only finished his dinner, but most asked for seconds." Candle #1 is always twice the length of candle #2. Whatever time it takes it will always be twice the length of candle #2 as long as they burn the same time at the same rate.

I don't think so ... remember, they are both the same length? So one cannot be "always twice the length" of the other one.

Then why does one burn out faster than the other? The difference is due to one candle having 2X more wax than the other. The only way it can be possible for both to be the same length to start with is when one candle is fatter than the other (more wax) but of the same length.

But the question is:
How much time must candle #1 burn before it is twice the length of candle #2 ?

Answer: Every two minutes???

Naka
24-01-2011, 07:28 AM
The official answer is 2 hrs and I had to crack my coconut to figure it out.

So I drew 2 lines.....but are both 6 inches long representing both candles

First candle has 6 sections ( 6 hrs) and each section is 1"

Second second has 3 sections ( 3 hrs) and each section is 2"

First candle....after burning 2 hrs, it only has 4" left or 2/3 of the candle.

Second candle...after burning 2 hrs, it has only 2" left or 1/3 of the candle.

So after 2 hrs of burning, first candle is 4" high and second candle is 2" high.

So candle 1 is now twice the length of candle 2.

CONGRATS to VP.

No, centrifugal force represents the effects of inertia that arise in connection with rotation and which are experienced as an outward force away from the center of rotation

No takers? Here's the published answer:

The answer is yes. Theoretically, the answer would appear to be no, since to move at all, it would seem the exact centre is moving in two directions at once, which is of course impossible. The exact centre of a wheel does turn since the particle in the centre of the wheel, be it ever so small, could always be divided in half and this process could continue indefinitely.

(I don't pretend to understand the above answer especially the last bit about the central particle dividing in half...)

Three surgeons and a clumsy cook go camping in the remote wilderness. The clumsy cook stumbles over the campfire as he is serving the surgeons, injuring himself and dumping hot stew on the hands of the surgeons. The cook's injuries need surgical treatment. The surgeons' injuries are minor but open. It turns out they brought the equipment necessary for the cook's surgery with them, and they can use the campfire to sterilize the tools. But there are only two rubber gloves. Because of the different surgeons' skills, all three of the surgeons are needed to operate on the cook, in sequence. How can this be done without any of them being exposed to the blood of any of the others?

The first surgeon operates with the first glove (glove A) inside the second glove (glove B).

The second surgeon operates using just glove B. The third surgeon operates using glove A, turned inside out, inside glove B.

Here's the published answer:

Although it would seem unlikely to have a barbeque and then commit suicide, even stranger was the contents NOT found in the police search. If Datuk Apakata had just eaten some rambutans (according to the autopsy report) there should have been rambutan seeds or the hairy outer covering in the area. It was the absence of these that aroused Inspector Apamacam's suspicion.

It was on a warm evening in June 1920 that the 'Purple Cow Hotel' was robbed. Knowing the police were hot on their trail, Freddy Corleone and Al Capone agreed to split the loot and parted company. Freddy took the high road far up into the mountains while Al headed for the sea-coast. The first morning on the run, each woke up with an intense craving for hard-boiled eggs. Since water boils at a lower temperature at higher altitudes, which of them will get what they craved first? They didn't mention if both started cooking at the same time so I am assuming that they do.

Firstly they need the eggs and a saucepan and a fire. Eggs size and weight must also be the same to make a comparison. Although water boils at a lower temperature at higher altitude, it would take longer time to get that temperature compared with at the sea coast. Both will get their desired craving at the same time.....

Al Capone. Water boil at 100 degrees Celcius at sea level, but the higher up you go the lower the boiling point. Therefore Freddy's eggs will be boiling at a lower temperature, and consequently take longer to cook.

Assuming that both planes are exactly two thousand kms apart, how far will they be from each other one minute before they meet?

Plane 1

Speed = x/t = 15
x = 15 t

Plane 2
Speed = (2000-x)/t = 10
2000 - x =10t

Substituting x in second equation:
2000 -15t = 10t
t = 80m

Meeting will occur in 80 mins.

So one minute before meeting is 79 min.

Distance travelled by plane 1 at 79th min:
79 x 15 = 1185

Distance travelled by plane 2 at 79th minute:
79 x 10 = 790

So difference is 1185 -790 = 395km, that's how far away they are one minute before the meeting.
