split arguments from EPF thread

It's my personal opinion and you do not have to follow it if you don't believe in it. I am not a financial consultant.

In fact lots of financial consultants got it wrong as in the Wall Street collapse and legions of rich, powerful and clever people followed Bernie Madoff's advice and end up in a financial grave.

If you think the EPF is unsafe, then many other things are also unsafe depending on how you see it. If you think Malaysia is going bankrupt, what do you think will happen to the banks?

Didn't banks also go bankrupt following the Wall Street collapse? I am not saying that our banks will follow suit but one can stretch the possibilities given different scenarios.

Or maybe one may like to stash up money under the bed, earn no interest and get chewed by termites or cockroaches?

I don't know about you, I put RM5,000 every month in EPF and see my money grow and grow with a little exposure in unit trust. Spread the eggs in various baskets but the bulk still in EPF.

I made a mistake of listening to someone, who like you said EPF would collapse and I withdrew some money from EPF hastily when I reached 50 seven years ago. Had I kept it my EPF money would have been more today.

Anyway, when I say it's a safe bet, I am just giving my own opinion. I reiterate: you don't have to listen to me.

If you are to compare me with the likes of those always featured in chic magazines, I am nothing.

All I know is:

I am debt free.
Have some humble assets.
Have savings like many of you, and continue to save as we have no debts to clear.


Still can walk, eat and move around - if this can be regarded as healthy count me in.

My two sen advice to anyone who wants to listen is: money is for spending. Don't hoard money and never enjoy life. However, save some for a rainy day and EPF is a very good way of helping one to save.

Most important is not to try and keep up with Ali, Chong and Muthu. Just because you see your neighbour got a brand new Camry or Mercs, you also want to buy one.

The urge to improve your income is good but once you have got that income, think carefully before you splurge.

Your aim must be to be totally debt free when your company says: "Thank you. Here's your long service memento. Goodbye".

Looks like this blog has an excellent way of framing people.

When you call me argumentative, quarrelsome, vain...no bananas. When people give some views, you whack people but kwchang sits tight and smiling. I can see him putting his hands in his pocket about to dish out another banana.

If you called someone 'argumentative' and 'quarrelsome' (you did that in your post) then you had called him a name (accusing him of a state of mind ... or a personality dysfunction). That is being personal

My Teman Baru friend, this is what unbiased moderation is about ... I always try my best to exclude prejudice in my moderation. In that way, I treat everyone equally, above board and my actions should become fair and transparent. My decisions on the issuance of a banana should be based on the situation, not on past history.

If I maintained memory of past history, then a lot of the inmates of the plantation should not remain as members today. But I maintain no grudge against anyone. I do not judge the person. I only act on the nick causing mischief and chastise accordingly. Therefore EVERYONE on the Forum is not a felon with a record... and everyone has the 2nd chance to renew their stay once out of the plantation.

My philosophy is that all are guests here in the forum. No one should be treated as a felon with a police record. The rogues' gallery is only a record to discourage anyone from trying to break the rules.

Indeed, as you can see from most of the great bananas that I got they are mostly for arguing with people like you - and I am sure kwchang will agree that I started to argue when people like you instigated me into a quarrel by calling names and using harsh words.

I have even argued with kwchang whom I feel have wrongly penalised me on so many occasions. The bananas that I think I deserve are hijacking threads but the arguing bananas was forced upon me. But after awhile, I get used to it. In fact have to laugh over it.

I am past 55. In fact I am 57 this year. Perhaps I didn't put it clearly - I was referring to those like me who contribute to EPF on their own.

For those self-employed (meaning no employer) and past 55, you are allowed to put in a minimum of RM50 and maximum of RM5,000. I have been doing that for the past year or so (putting RM5,000 a month).

I am a consultant and my wife is a business woman so we have that extra savings.

My previous employer also gave 19% + my 11% = 30%.

That's why I try to give my one or two sen advice free of charge but people call me vain lah, arrogant lah etc. When I wanted to share with you people about my China experience (went again to China for the Expo in June) sentinel called me a "trained propagandist" and "communist". Firstly, I have not allowed anyone to call names. That is why Wasabe! was also in the plantation with you. Please note that I am not online all the time ... you expect me to take immediate action? How can you even determine that I have read the post and left it without any action on my part? I may even be online but I cannot be reading all the posts all the time.

Finally, that last part was a THREAT. We shall not have anyone giving out threats in the Forum. The last time it happened, someone threatened to shoot the one he was argueing with and that caused a whole lot of arguments ... I am not about to allow that to happen again.
