VIPs who drop names and default big time
By ELAN PERUMAL

SHAH ALAM: VIPs and prominent businessmen who use the names of powerful people are responsible for up to 50% of the arrears owed to local authorities in Selangor.

State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mokhtar Dahalan said one such prominent individual owed the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) RM9mil in assessment arrears while another owed RM5mil.

He said the two alone were accountable for almost half of the total RM30mil owed to the council in arrears.

“The situation is similar in most of the local authorities where we face a lot of difficulty in collecting taxes and arrears from those sheltered by big guns.

“These people make it very difficult for the local authorities to recover the debts or take any form of enforcement action against them,” he said yesterday at a press conference.

He was responding to the Prime Minister’s criticism on Friday of some local authorities for their tardiness in collecting assessment.

...Mokhtar said he was unable to reveal the total amount owed to all the local authorities as he did not have the full details.

However, he said, Petaling Jaya Municipal Council and MPSJ topped the list with RM30mil each followed by Klang Municipal Council with RM20mil and Kajang Municipal Council with RM15mil.

All are born equal, but fortunately or unfortunately some become more equall during the journey of human's life span.

Let's hope the authorities will treat all equal, and seen to be equal, no matter who they are, what they are, where they are, how they are, and why they are !! Please recover all the outstandings, just as they have recovered from us.

The rudiment of news reporting is to address the 4W1H - What/Who, When, Where, Why and How - of anything worth reporting.

Somehow, the press , like the Star, has lost the minimum courage to name names. Worst, news printed do not enlighten but confuse further.

The Star may change its form a zillion times, but its substance will remain sub-standard if rudimentary issues are left unattended.

In this case, the question remains: WHO are these two Subang Jaya businessmen?

TWO businessmen in Subang Jaya who owed the local authorities RM5mil in assessment rates and quit rent have agreed to pay up in instalments, said Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo.

“The two men approached the local authorities concerned and appealed for leniency as they could not afford to pay because their businesses were not doing well,” Dr Khir said recently after hosting a Hari Raya dinner for the Selangor Umno Pemuda and Puteri exco members at Bukit Mergawati, the Mentri Besar’s official residence.

He added that the two had earlier asked the state for a reduction in the backdated sum, but it was a request that could not be entertained.

“The state has a policy that all must pay up their assessment and quit rent.

“We sympathise with their financial difficulties, but we have a duty to collect.

“The best we can do is to offer an affected party some time. They can then discuss with the local authorities concerned to pay the outstanding amounts in instalments,” he said.

Selangor executive councillor in charge of local authorities Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Ahmad Dahlan had recently said that some ratepayers tried to avoid payment by using their political connections.
