Is there a way that one can set password to all sort of files to safeguard the content from prying eyes and can also be opened by any person to whom we give the password without having to use fancy high end encryption software .... something easily available, ubiquitious and easy - akin to Adobe Reader in its ease and availablity ?

If you are using Microsoft Office, instead of clicking normal save, use Save As function...at the bottom left hand corner, there is a 'Tool' button, click on it and select General Option, there you can set the password to open the file, try to set higher security password which consist of alpha-numeric instead of only numeric or only alphabets.

You can try to encrypt the file with Truecrypt. www.truecrypt.org
