your friend is half right, kidneys cannot digest.
Because they filter blood

I am convinced that for optimal nutrition, you need to take a high potency multivitamin and mineral supplement on a day to day basis.
Even if you are eating right, it’s unlikely that your food contains all the nutrients you need.

I'm a little confused when it comes to which supplement suits me best as there are many types or versions out there in the pharmaceutical industry.

Are there any recommendations/prescriptions for these medicinal purpose by a long time user or a physician/medical officer about?
Please share your thoughts and ideas. Thanks!

Who honestly feels better for taking supplements?

I stopped taking vitamin supplements just over a year ago, today i feel much better than i have done in the past decade.

So what have i done instead of taking supplements?
Lost weight, from 94 kilo in April 09 to 80 kilo in April 2010.
Exercised more. Dont be confused by the term exercise. To walking the dog i added riding a bicyle, maybe 20 minutes a day, 4 days a week so no big deal, i cannot say no pain no gain :D
I eat more fresh fruit.
I drink more water.

Nothing beats fresh fruits, balance meals, adequate sleep and exercise naturally.
Nothing is considered optimum even if you take vitamin A to Z especially processed vitamins or minerals. If you ask those who passed the 100 years mark, none of them have been said to ingest vitamin capsules to prolong thier life. ;)

Agree..but we have to take into consideration that the food that we eating today is full of chemicals compare to those passed the 100 years mark..

hormone in chickens and meats, pesticides in vege, borid acid in seafood...arrrggghhh...tons to list

Those who say we all need nutritional supplements because of chemicals, insecticide, hormones etc in our food are usually peddlers of "health" food themselves. If you eat a normal balanced diet, there is absolutely no need for anything else.

The capsules are made of gelatin. People usually raise a stink over their origin (bovine or porcine); not whether they clog up your kidneys. If they are indigestible, then they remain in your gut and comes out in your $hit. How they can get to your kidneys I have no idea.

As for living in a chemical, hormone, insecticide and additive free world, try going back 150 years where most people die in their 40s from poor food, medical care, water supply etc. Also where people have as many kids as possible because 3 out of 10 will die before they reach adulthood.

What means borid (or is it boric) acid in seafood? Care to elaborate?

Olden days grandma likes to 'slow cook' chicken meat for many hours to get all the nutrients out of it. Now , if we use a modern slow- cooker to do this job and with the controversy of chemical residue remaining in chicken meat ,do you guys think it is still a good ideal to cook this way ? Tks all.

Please share your thoughts and ideas. Thanks!@Spawn, I recently noticed a website that has organized research about the various supplements that are being marketed to consumers.

Basically, each supplement is evaluated according to the results of published research and give a recommendation (or not).

I will try to find the website and post it here.

Cheers, m

This image is a “balloon race”. The higher a bubble, the greater the evidence for its effectiveness. But the supplements are only effective for the conditions listed inside the bubble.

You might also see multiple bubbles for certain supplements. These is because some supps affect a range of conditions, but the evidence quality varies from condition to condition. For example, there’s strong evidence that Green Tea is good for cholesterol levels. But evidence for its anti-cancer effects is conflicting. In these cases, we give a supplement another bubble.

It's interesting to see which ones are above the 'worth it' line and which ones are below - either way below with no promising research, or in the 'conflicting' area.

Cheers, m

Perhaps the FAQ from this website will help to address your concern:
http://www.capsugel.com/about/faq.php

I have copy pasted the relevant areas below for your easy reading:

How can I be assured the gelatin capsule is safe?
While there are studies of gelatin that can be obtained via a more intensive search of the Internet or other sources, the most significant assurance of the safety of gelatin relates to its long-term use, not only in capsules, but in many other food products that are routinely consumed.

What happens to the capsule inside my body?
The water-soluble gelatin shell dissolves in the stomach, releasing its contents within the first few minutes of swallowing.

What is better - a capsule or a tablet?
Both tablets and capsules are well-proven and well-accepted dosage forms. The original rationale for developing the capsule as a dosage form was based on the capsule's ability to mask the taste and/or odor of specific medicinal compounds. It gained further popularity based on: ease-of-swallowing, attractive appearance, ability to hold a color, neutral taste, as well as its ability to be filled and processed easily.

Tablets are formed by direct compression of a powdered form of the active ingredient. Many "inactive" ingredients, primarily sugars, starches and other fillers, are often added to tablets to better enable efficient and stable tablet formation. Note that some tablets have chemical coatings that are added to make them easier to swallow, or less prone to dis-taste.

I see products that are labeled as "gelcaps"and "softgels"; what are they?
Gelcaps are basically tablets that are coated with a layer of gelatin.

Softgels are composed of a thick layer of gelatin, to which plasticizers have been added to maintain flexibility and stability. The inner section of the softgel usually contains a liquid form of the active ingredient.

An active family friend died recently from liver cancer and she was about 67 to 68.

I know she had been taking over 20 types of vitamins daily for a few years and I had always told her that her kidney may be overwork. Her vitamins cost ran into few hundred of dollars per month.

I am not sure what is the cause of her illness. It was too late when she found that problem.

So sad to die so young.

Just wondering why people would believe there are better vitamins in capsules than vitamins or minerals in real fruits or foods.
Porbably it is so easy to reach for instant nutritions in today's fast paced life. In fact, life can be torture without the TV remote control or washing machine for a lot of people nowadays.
