As far as I know, the angpow must be in red , even numbers in fresh notes and they given to children who are unmarried.

Old folks like parents and grandparents receive forgiveness and thanks from their children . Angpows are bigger for old folks. :)

In my family and many that I know of, recently married couples who have been married less than a year, are not expected to give out angpows and they are also not 'qualified' to receive as well. :)

And what about married couples who have no kids to receive Ang Pows but have 64 nephews and nieces and first cousins (and still increasing every year) who meet every 1st day at the ancestor's house for the last 20 years? Maybe this year, its cheaper to disappear and cabut for an overseas tour? :D

Put 2 Ringgit in each angpow lah!.. or is it all about the value of the contents of an angpow nowadays? Don't let me see any kid smirking about the amount. That'll be the LAST of any ang pow from me to that kid. The parents will get a piece of my mind too!

The going rate in the family is cousins - RM4, nephews / nieces - RM8, and elders minimum RM20 and parents - XXX ? :D

Even the standard practice now for the garbage truck team appearing on 1st Day of CNY is either RM10 to the leader garbage collector for the entire team or RM2 to each worker with the garbage truck... no wonder lah so many walking with the truck on 1st Day!

Anyway, I think most PARENTS NOW should do whats spoilt this country to address this and starting by putting just a token amount in the ang pow.
Wanna spoil a kids mind by encouraging them to be materialistic..GO AHEAD!

If people really want to do good, HAVE the financial capability, instead of big ang pows to kids.. MIGHT AS WELL GIVE BIG ANGPOWS to charitable organizations like Hospice here, were the funds WILL BE PUT TO VERY BENEFICIAL USE. Right or not? :)

How can you be wrong, BS Lee Sir!

Here's the address again : Penang Hospice Society, 250A Jalan Air Itam, 10460 Pulai Pinang. Write your name and address behind your cheques and the society will send you a tax-exempt receipt which you can use to submit with your income tax annual returns for the rightful deductions. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! :D

Don't cabut to overseas lah ,just pretend you have Parkinson and put newspaper in the angpow packet ,then alot will pity you and give you money instead :D :D .That's what my neighbor do many years ago.(still do not know what is Parkinson  )

..therefore, makes me glad to have a few kids of my own to even that out. :p

Seriously, the angpows money can amount to quite a hefty sum especially to those with big, huge families from his & her side of the family. On the positive side, celebrating CNY with so many family members is just great!

mWong, its ok even if the family is huge and very extended because you can always avoid meeting them during the CNY period... that is if they visit you or you visit them lah...

In Penang, most families all meet at an ancestor's house first thing on first day of CNY... one of thos heritage old colonial-type houses where there are 5 generations at aleast of the family from the great-grand father / mother, their children, their granchildren, their great granchildren, and multiply this by 2 because of maternal, paternal sides... every year we need to prepare 80 packets on standby and thats for 1st day and what about those who drop by for visits or those where we go and run smack into many children?

Ha Ha buts its all really fun at the end of the day... both wifey and I love to see the toothless grin of the little cousins and nephews and nieces when they greet you so shyly and receive their red packets... why? because they are too young to differentiate between paternal side and maternal side i.e. ah ee or ah mm or tua kor, ji kor, sar kor so they simply hentam just to receive the ang pows and they cannot just get away with auntie or uncle because they must call the right title and greet correctly... so funny these little ones! Greedy pigs... no teeth also want to eat peanuts...
