Practice A Threat To National Language, Says DBP Chief

KOTA BAHARU, Nov 8 (Bernama) -- The practice by some companies to include Mandarin as one condition for employment is threatening the use of the national language, said said Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Director-General
Datuk Abdul Aziz Deraman Friday.

He said it is an unhealthy development that could hamper government efforts to promote unity among the various races through the use of the national language.

"In the past, it happened in institutions of higher learning but now it has spread to the private sector. This is a threat to the national language," he said when asked to comment on the practice by some companies in the private sector.

He said it could not be accepted that the use of the national language would hamper business transactions since the various races were proficient in the language.

Abdul Aziz urged private companies concerned to review such condition since it was clearly against the country's aspirations of building a united race.
