Hahaha ... my son also decides to wear BEN-10 shoes for Std 2 :p Keep trying to "push" him towards more reliable and robust Bata, but nope, the power of the marketing Ben is much more powerful, he even got the cheek to tell me BEN-10 shoes are RM1-00 cheaper ... , so I should not waste hard-earned money buying Bata ..... aiyah, my "frugal" lessons back-firing !!!

School Bags for Std 2 (Upstairs)

Firstly, let me CONFIRM that Std 2 is definitely UPSTAIRS next year :(

Secondly, I had already tried the steps up to my son's class recently and it is slightly narrower and smoother (plain cement type with some grooves) compared to our houses' ones, so do advice the kids NOT TO RUN esp when coming down after school !!

Thirdly, if using trolley bag, make sure they can carry it DOWN step by step, up is not too much of a problem as they can yank it up but down, the bags may have a mind of its own if they slip down bringing the kids down with them

Fourthly, if using backpacks, advice that you also include a second carry bag TO SPLIT the load ...

My son still insist on trying with his trolley bag ... so I let him go and try first ;)

currymee is such a good father :) thanks for "turun padang" in trying out the stairs at LH & sharing with us here.

I will also go for roller bag. With such weight on the back, I really dont encourage the kids to carry them up the steps albeit splitting some weights in a separate bag. I hope LH could consider installing lockers for students :(

Thank you all for your advice. I actually bought one without trolley for my son. Unfortunately the father say better get on with trolley coz from his experience will get hunchback especially my son is quite small size. Only 15kg now. He He. So, will try to go this Sat see whether can change or not :p

If possible, I do recommend for Malaysian school children to use the trolley school bags until they are in secondary school - certainly if possible to avoid it at primary school while they are growing up. The heavy bagpack load is definitely not good for the growth of the back/spine no matter how you spilt the load, use any fancy support backpack bags etc ... If it doesn't deform the back growth, it may stunt the proper back development, this is based purely on my years of observations and not any scientific data. ;) (Note: if I am not mistaken, backpacks where initially designed for ADULTS, how on earth did they reach the young ones?)

As for Lick Hung providing lockers, not a bad idea but be prepared for PIBG to ask for another round of donations to do so.

If your children pack the bag according to time table given, I don't think it would actually be that heavy. The problem is the children wanted to play safe by bringing all books to the school. In fact, I feel that trolley bag actually increase more weigh especially when the children has to carry up the staircase.... unless you want your child to pull his bag up and down the staircase. ;)

This is merely my personal opinion based on observation. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Actually I have been getting my son to take his text/workbook according to timetable but not exercise books. Its bcoz in any case one to the subject teacher is absent, may replace by another subject. At least he will have the exercise book to work it. On top, he still need to pass up the homework.
Perhaps should get both types and gage which is more suitable. haha

Same here :) Problem is the class timetable is too general, so say for example, Bahasa Cina (BC) classes, the kids end up bringing about 5-6 exercise books, instead of the class teacher being more specific and say only these type of exercises on these days ... :(

Anyway, I am letting my son try with his "old" Std 1 trolley bag first for the first few days and see how it goes ... I also have my regular backpack, so he can take mine to school ... ;) No way, I am getting suckered into a Ben 10 or Transformer backpack when daddy got tons of free bags from so many companies :p

Anyway, a friend of mine (another parent) had asked me to check out this super-keng backpacks for school - www.ergoland.com.my Wow, got to kena lottery first before consideration .... :o and here I am bitching about Swan being expensive and went for generic chap-lang brand bags .... :p

No need to buy expensive backpacks... go scout around for adult backpacks for sales price... u can get a good one around RM29-RM40.

Next time I am in Pertama, will try to get a small army backpack for son :D, if he dowan, daddy can use.... I have one which can fit him inside also :D

Experiment at home - trolley bag vs backpack for Std 2 upstairs

I tried a little experiment at home just now with my son by asking him to carry his "normal" :p load of school books up the stairs and down again with the Std 1 trolley bag and a backpack with small carry bag. Then I asked which one he feels more stable, better and comfortable.

Conclusion: Backpack with small carry bag for upstairs (Std 2) but he said he wants to go back to trolley bag when his classes are downstairs again

He nearly fell and had to struggle to carry the trolley bag UP, down was easy - which is a surprise to me as I was expecting the reverse, guess I got the estimation of an adult's strength and a child's wrong going up and mixed up on the stability on the way down :o :o

PS: Maybe some of the other parents may want to consider doing similar experiments before finalising - after all, different children may response differently :)

That's exactly where I am coming from, the trolley attached to the bag actually put more weight to the bag. Thus, making your child more difficult in carrying up the staircase, unless you prepare to change the bag every quarterly or half-yearly by asking him/her to "pull up and down" the staircase. :p

And when you all try it, do so under REAL SCHOOL CONDITIONS with "normal" book loads ... big difference when an additional 4-5 kg is added (20 - 25% of the child's weight) !! My son was flying upstairs with an empty trolley bag but when loaded up, wow, ... really struggling ...

ONE MORE WEEK (7 DAYS) LEFT OF SCHOOL HOLIDAYS :(

This morning, wifey woke up and reminded my son to try back his old school uniform to see if they still fit as it is ONE MORE WEEK left to new school year. If they don't fit, daddy has to bring him to Jusco to buy uniform afterwards .... luckily they still fit since he was small size in Std 1, now just nice into the clothes, so save some money :)

Son has started to really get lazy and keeps on grumbling about don't want to go to school anymore, might as well stay at home and study since both mummy and daddy teach him , why waste time go to school ? We told him, if he doesn't go to school, the police will come and catch him .... coz it is the LAW for kids to go to school until 18 years old. So, don't argue with me, go tell the judges and policemen, end of story ... hahahaa .... :p :p

Last Week of Stress Free Week

This post is specially for the new Std 1 (2011) parents - do enjoy the most of this final stress free week and "shouting free" week esp for new Std 1 mums. Starting from next week,

1) You will be tearing your hair out and wondering how on earth your child is ever going to finish their homework by 10pm. FYI - it is NORMAL for Lick Hung to give plenty of homework, it is NORMAL for the kids when they first start to handle the huge volume of homeowrk to cry and seems to take ages to finish (it gets better and easier as time goes by - so it is a time-based sort of passage of rites ... so be cool ;) )

2) You will find that your child will be losing erasers, pencils, rulers and what have you almost daily if really careless or at least once or twice - DON"T KILL THEM over it, just guide them :) It is NORMAL for kids to misplace and learn to be responsible for their own stuff unlike tadika where the tadika teachers are paid to look after them. Lick Hung teachers will not intervene too much on children interaction unless there are cases of bullying or over-boisterous play - please distinguish between the two - to avoid parental conflicts.

3) If your kids get into any "difficulties" with another kid, inform the class teacher - don't settle it yourself by confronting the other child or their parents - the teachers know what to do, just inform them !! :) Don't take the "law" personally into your own hands even though it involves your precious ones.

4) When the exams come, you will go bonkers when you find out that almost every child you hear about gets an average of 90% and above and if your child scores 85% or below he/she will be in the bottom half the class  As long as your kids get 80% and above (an A) - they are doing well - so don't go nuts over class ansd standard position, that is a bonus !!

5) There will be NO STREAMING, so don't go crazy about it like us in 2010 - we discussed about it so often :o :o

6) Donations are NOT COMPULSARY BUT VERY MUCH WELCOMED ... so don't worry too much if you cannot afford to dole out RM100.00 or more each time the school asked for donations, just do your best :) (The PIBG and HM will kill me for saying this hahaha .... :D )

I am telling you all these NOT TO FREAK YOU OUT - but to let you know that it is NORMAL to be a stressed-out Lick Hung parents for the first few weeks - after that you get "desensitised" like us !! :D

Agree 101% with curry mee. I better rest my throat this few days before the shouting and screaming comes again. hahaha...
I tried my son with a back pack. Nothing much inside, just 2 bottles of water and his Mei Mei diapers and he can barely walk even on flat surface. Okie, confirmed, have to change back to trolley, get a cheaper one and let him drag up & down the stair case. His small size is definite a no no to carry the back pack.

Franky, thanks for the advance info on the replacement classes :)

Just told my wiifey and son about the possible whole January full of replacement Saturday classes - both replied CRAZY :p :D :D My son said like that might as well go to school this week instead ... see, even young ones got better logic :p

FREE MILK - I am happy :D - Birdy, yes, they started it in the final week of Std 1 last (this) year ;) (so confusing) - the Govt is supposed to go into in full-swing in 2010 but as usual .... better late than never :) - why do you think Dutch Lady suddenly starts introducing schoolchildren size packs ? ;) For the school kids, they just repack with 1Malaysia logo/branding - yes, I drank one of them last (this) year, when my son's friend don't want hers and gave it to him ... got 3 flavours - normal/chocolate/strawberry :)

Have you asked your son if he still wants to eat the canteen food or will he be happier if you pack the recess food for him ? Most important is that he has a FULL PROPER MEAL before classes - lunch or late breakfast before going to school.

Nothing complicated at their age - just simple sandwiches, biscuits, roti buns (my son's favourite) or even fried noodles or rice on the way to school - that is what I packed for my son daily since day one of Std 1. Take note to put the food in a separate plastic bag so that if it leaks (esp for fried noodles and rice) , it doesn't stain the books or go everywhere in the bag. :)

I believe the canteen food prepaid service is still on, just go and ask on the first day at the canteen - from what I noticed, there is a lot of wastage as most of the kids after the first month or so, just skip the meals or take some and then gobble down quickly and go and play. My son likes the buns and biscuits as he can play as he eats/snacks ...

Countown to New School Year - last 24 hours

Just kidding !! :D Relax and enjoy the New Year :) :) The only things that stress the parents in Lick Hung are the exams and homework - other than that, it is a pretty well run and ok school :) I had the opportunity to compare notes with my nieces and nephews from other SJKCs, we are pretty lucky.

As for the SUSU (milk) scheme, I am surprised that some of the kids did not get it or did not know about it, it was only given like a trial run for one day and as far as I know almost all the kids that I saw from different classes got them  Based on Franky's info, it looks like the SUSU scheme is now in full swing. I am not 100% sure if it is actually from Dutch Lady, but at first glance, it looks EXACTLY like a Dutch Lady milk carton (same shade of blue, size, design etc) until you see closely the 1Malaysia logo. :)

Welcome to 2011 New School Year :)

First words my son said when I told him today is start of new school year - DONT WANT !!!! :p :D

Anyway, he asked me if I am going to bring him to his class, well, I said it all depends if the school teachers expect all Std 2 children to group together at the canteen/car park - if yes, then I cannot do so, daddy is not going to argue with assistant HM so early in the year  ... if no, then I will bing him to his class :)

I told him to bring an extra notebook/pad in case he has to write down a few extra things like school timetable (if no photocopies are given), school fees, teacher's name and hp (if given) etc etc ... I told him not to tear up any of his new exercise books for this

As for books today in lieu of official timetable etc - I am just packing 2-3 copies of each type of exercise books, his workbooks and complete set of Chinese textbook, my guess is today will the CLASS TEACHER in charge for whole day, and majority of class teachers teach Chinese and Maths, so logical that if she wants them to do anything, most likely to be Chinese or Maths and most probably writing exercises - Bishun :p (Sorry for late info, the idea just came to my head when I was helping him pack just now :o )

Mommy

Unfortunately, I can't bring him to his class coz I am working full time. Let's see what he got back from school today. Hopefully, he is not so blur until dunno who is his class teacher/time table etc...

What a NIGHTMARE start for the new school year (afternoon session) - 2011 !! Firstly, traffic is bad (not unexpected), secondly, this year, the school management decided not to allow the Std 1 parents to take their precious ones to their respective classes or go buy exercise books until 2pm, so a HUGE JAM of parents formed outside Lick Hung main gates (unexpected) and then to top it all off, the morning classes break at the same time it rained from 12:30pm till 2pm (just now) causing HAVOC all over SS19/6

The good news ;) - due to the extreme conditions faced today, I sat down and waited out the whole commotion from 12:10 till 2pm and HAD TWO BOWLS OF CURRYMEE at Choy Kee which was JAMMED PACKED !!! :p :p - I am skipping dinner tonight - TOO FULL already !! :D

BTW, I feel sorry for the new Std 1 parents and kids, the rain will cause a lot of headache for everyone esp when the Std 1 classes are flood-prone as well and with parents rushing in to buy books etc. I think the PIBG got to arrange things out for the Std 1 properly, maybe start a day or two earlier, so that all the things can be sorted out.

I would think there are pros & cons of having the same class teacher. Pro is that the kids are comfortable with the teacher, hopefully the teacher knows their strengths & weaknesses and improve further from there. Cons is that since the kids are so comfortable, they are not afraid of the teacher. My 2 cents, not sure about other parents view.

My son Std 1 class teacher is also his Std 2 teacher - and according to him - her first words, ok, class, we continue from Std 1 HAHAHAHAA .... :) - all rules, sitting arrangements, duty roster, class monitors etc etc same-same ... :p Only a couple of "naughty" students from last year were horrified at seeing her again, and the teacher told them, this year be good !! :p

The workbook/yuran Std 2 booklist and class timetable were given out yesterday. (note that items # 10, 11 and 18 are TRULY OPTIONAL  - so I am not buying those :p ) Thankfully, for Std 2 the way the classes are arranged (for my son's class), not too many subjects per day but more intense (2x and 3x periods), so trolley school bags up to 2nd floor should be manageble.

My son has decided on the trolley bag for Std 2 after seeing like majority of his classmates are all still using the trolley bags and everyone just drag them up and down. I asked him any problems - he said no and if the girls can do it, so can he ... betul, betul "hero" :p :p Anyway, I am prepared to purchase more trolley bags than to see him get back injuries.

Another parent suggested to me to check out the hypermarkets for the cheaper non-branded trolley bags, so even when replacing every 3-4 months, don't get heart-attack at the ever increasing school bag prices

REGISTRATION of new children for SJKCs Klang Valley - MARCH 1st to 30th EVERY YEAR - why, I also don't know  .... but has been these 30 days for as long as I can remember in Klang Valley area. My suggestion is for new parents is to drive past the intended school around last week of February to look for the banners or call them up by end Feb - to be safe.

Special Information for Std 1 Parents (after school pick-up)

Please note that based on what I saw and heard (in my half-past six Mandarin) from the Asst HM yesterday, AFTER SCHOOL SESSION: all Std 1 children will be brought to the canteen and will be seated in accordance to their classes, so parents that plan to go and pick up their kids, please go to the relevant canteen tables/rows.

Don't go to the classrooms as they will not be there or hunt for them in the carpark or play area - basketball court (unless they are cheeky and decided to run wild  )

Homework Tips for New Std 1 Parents (based on the currymee's experience :p )

1) NO TV - if possible by everyone - daddy included (reading can or background music ) :D - so kids don't feel that they are being short-changed or "tortured" ;) For this part, the mummy has to get the daddy's cooperation in most cases.

2) Let the kids have a bath, change, makan first then start - best around 8pm-ish, coz the normal homework for average student takes about an hour or so ( my son's average is around 1.5-2 hours ) .... :)

3) As early as possible, teach the kids to pack their schoolbags for the next day together with you and later on let them try first and then you check with them.

4) If you have promised them 30 minutes of TV or games/reading after they have finished the homework, stick to it, don't chase them to bed if it is late, it helps for you to tell them next time try to finish faster, so can be less stress.

5) It is OK to scream and shout ... I have yet to meet a caring parent that has not done so ... :D :D :D

6) It is normal for the kids to cry also esp when they are too tired .... this part, it will depend on your child handling skill .... different parents got different ways and not everyone agrees on the best way ...

maybe the other senior parents can add a few extra tips ...

1st Anniversary of the SJKC Lick Hung Parents' Group Thread

:) :) - wow, we "survived" for ONE whole year !! :D

Time for celebration - I am having currymee for lunch afterwards :p

Thank you to all fellow forumers for making it one of the most helpful resource site for Lick Hung matters (so far ... mainly on Std 1 and 2 and as we go along ... :D )

I am reposting the original post of 5th January 2010 ;)

Dear Forumers (esp parents of Lick Hung schoolchildren),

Realising that for the next 12 years, I will be involved with SJKC Lick Hung as a parent, I am proposing that we have a cyber support group for parents (new and veterans) on matters and issues relating to our children's school and education. I hope that this thread can serve as an informal focal point and reference; hopefully constructive and benefical to all. Sharing of information and experiences will be key to its success.

I have learned a lot and spoken to a number of parents in the last few weeks, and clearly, there are some unique features of Lick Hung that may be daunting to first-timers and puzzling to veterans as well. Hopefully by sharing and pooling our experiences and knowledge, we can also make our lives easier and less stressful :)

This thread is not meant to be a channel for BASHING or WALLOPING the school, management or PIBG but to share info, raise issues, Q&A and other matters of concern to us as parents, and if necessary, we will collate them to be addressed in future PIBG - the official channel for us to discuss.

Thank you for your kind attention :)

Karen,

FYI - from the "old" 5-1-2010 post :) - wah - really bring back memories of my "blurness" at that time :o :o

Thanks Birdy, Parents please take NOTE:

For Standard One (2010 enrollment) parents - REVISED

This is what the abbreviation on your child's timetable means: (Thanks to forumer Terisunny, Jeyanthy, Rachel SJ and Birdy for contributions)

PM=Pendidikan Moral
MU=Music
PSV=Pendidikan Seni dan Visual
PJ=Pendidikan Jasmani
PJK=Pendidikan Jasmani (theory) dan Kesihatan
SC=Science
KOMP=Komputer
BM=Bahasa Malaysia
BI=Bahasa Inggeris
BC=Bahasa Cina
M3=Mathematics

*SC = Science in ENGLISH
*M3 = Maths in ENGLISH

PH = PERHIMPUNAN (Assembly)

As for the teacher taking an exercise book from each student - usually one copy is for the TEACHER-PARENT communication book, it is for the school to paste all sorts of notices, request for donations, exam timetables etc, so it will be one of the most important book for you to check regularly.

I guess the Std 1 teacher will do the first one for them before asking the kids to DIY later on future notices -

NOTE: Std 1 parents - DON'T FORGET TO BUY A GLUE STICK (and a pair of safety scissors) for the kids, plenty of cut and paste throughout the year :D

Don't worry too much. It's only the 2nd day. Soon they will know what to do and they will enjoy it.
I would say the Lick Hung's teachers are very patriotic about the school. Within months, my son was telling me how much he respect and like the school. With this, he actually make the effort to understand what is going on. hehe

My girl's class has a new teacher pulak, though all students from std 1 move to same class in std 2 together. But I realise the new teacher is 10 times fiercer than the std 1 teacher. My hunch is, the change is due to there are a lot of naughty boys in her class and the previous teacher is not fierce enough :p

May be different class different pattern, my kid's class did not have TEACHER-PARENT communication book, the teacher just passed the notice/memo in loose paper (without asking children stick into a communication book), so every time I have to check their bags see whether got notice or not. :p

I recall back last year, the class teacher collected all the exercise books is for putting some remark like A, B, C , D or M1, M3 etc at the top right corner. I think it will help the teacher easier to ask the children to bring the exercise books by only mentioned A, B, C books etc.

Hi Rachel, don't worry too much. Up to now, I don't underestimate the way my son adjust himself in any situation. To me, this is a way of survival. Thus, training from young age will be good. Parents don't have to agree with my way, but so far, it works for my son. I will sense from his behaviour when he got home whether he is "surviving" or not. Then, I will try to "grill" the story from there and guide him along the way. :)

For Std 1 2010 - the subjects that were denoted with * means it is taught in English (Maths and Science) and in the old syallabus (KBSR - Kurikulum Bersepadu Sekolah Rendah) - the current batch of Std 2 kids are the last ones under KBSR.

For Std 1 2011 - all that I know is that the new Std 1 kids will be studying under the new education ruling (Maths and Science 100% in Mandarin) and new syllabus (KSSR - Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah) - so the syallabus and exam format etc etc may be different.

See here for official KSSR - http://www.moe.gov.my/bpk/kssr_docs/mula.htm

I am no expert on KBSR or KSSR syllabuses and cannot tell too much difference between them :o Perhaps, other parents or teachers who are online can assist.

Trust the SJKC Lick Hung School Class Teachers

Whether it is KBSR, KSSR, or whatever next set of 4-letter acroynm :p , trust the school teachers to give our children the best possible education they are capable of. This is the one aspect I can safely praise the Lick Hung class teachers, they are really dedicated and do try their best for the children and the school.

Note: In my book, trust the school teachers is not the same as trusting the school management, PIBG, Board of Governors, Dong Zong, Minister of Education (last person on Earth) etc etc  .... I am refering to the ACTUAL TEACHER in front of the classroom, the one that teaches :) and got no time for politics !!

*BC and *MU are the extra periods added by the school. the HM and class teacher explained this on last thursday when the standard one student first reported to school. if you go according to the new KSSR syllabus, the school hours for standard 1 is shorter than that of standard 2, the school has added the additional periods for chinese and music to standardise the schooling hours for both standard 1 and 2 to ease picking up by parents/transporters. note that you have to pay additional RM50 for half a year for these additional classes which forms part of the school fees to be paid on the first day of school.

Mommy,
If your son can score a B (70%+) and above in Chinese, you don't have to worry about him not being able to cope. You should be concerned if they are failing (less than 50%) in Chinese then I think you should start having remedial actions asap - like sending him to Mandarin tuition.

From my discussions with some of the senior parents, there will be a BIG JUMP in Std 4 - after the foundation years of Std 1-3, so as long as the kids are doing well in Mandarin by Std 3, should be OK, otherwise, it will be decision time.

Definition: BIG JUMP - when the material studied increase in depth and exams suddenly become super-tough (more than UPSR standard) and the average scores suddenly drops by 10-15%, so any child still scoring above 85% (A) is considered horliow !!! (guaranteed A in UPSR) - most are in low 80s and 70s ... by then 90%+ is as rare as the dodo birds !!

Is this stadardise for all school?

Among the SJKCs in Selangor/KL - almost 100% - except for the odd special holidays for school events (cuti peristiwa - yes, it is a strange term but that is what they used last year  )

However, it will be different compared with other SK schools.

Karen, thanks for the info. I heard my niece in SK also have replacement class on 22 Jan. So think most SJ schools are the same.

CM, son's teacher didnt insist on mechanical pencil or 2b. One think I notice is he does write more neat now. Maybe the teacher did emphasize that. Teacher has the power. I had been complaining the whole of last year & no changes. Now few days got changes. Haha... Also, notice that he is using book #5 (small square) for maths instead of the #4 big square.

I heard it from the teacher (while I was there last monday) that it was HM's instruction that no mechanical pencils can be used in the school anymore. Looks like everyone needs to comply that now.

Another thing I heard & which quite puzzle me was that, the teacher asked the kids not to drink water in the class during lessons but only drink in the evening before school ends? Why ? especially during the hot season, what is the rationale of not allowing them to drink water ??

Like that, my son will be MOST DISAPPOINTED, he was so happy a few days ago that he can write neatly and cleanly with the "always sharp" mechanical pencil. Now he has to revert to the normal 2B, no wonder, the long long face last night :( I can understand the rationale and reasons for banning it for younger children (Std 1), as they can stab and poke each other with the pencils but also to all Stds including Std 6 ?

As for drinking water, that is a strange ruling, I asked my son and he said there is no such prohibition in his class - only advice by the teacher to be careful and not spill all over the books and place. BTW, I noticed that the QUALITY of EXERCISE BOOKS by Kuo Liang still SUCKS

Talk about drinking water in the class. Son too commented the BM teacher said cannot go to toilet until she finish talking/teaching. The teacher can said "no" if student ask permission whether can go toilet. Wow, then the more son will not drink water as he already don't drink much water. Kids will get sick often if they don't drink enough water and under stress environment.... :(

No problem - you are welcome :) Hope your kid survived the first week without too much stress. I must admit the first 2 days of heavy rain did not help the situation at all.

Hahaha ... it never cease to amaze and surprise me, some of the logistic planning/distribution/decision made by the authorities. Sometimes, I wonder if they do any homework beforehand. I hope next time the Govt remembers that SJKC Lick Hung is one of the BIG school (as in huge student population) of approximately 3,500+ students and not an SK (approx 1,500+) :D :D

We are lucky - my nephews and nieces at other SJKCs still has not got a single milk carton yet !! :(

Co-curiculum Activities 2011

Parents,

FYI - my son just informed me. Please note that the school is starting to give out information/notices on co-curiculum. Std 2 parents, please take note as this will be the first time, our kids will be getting the info since co-curiculum was not available for Std 1 last year (kids too small according to teacher - yeah right - my son was quite unhappy with that reasoning !!)

It seems that last Friday, the notice for DANCES were distributed. Hopefully, there will be more - my son is looking forward to some of the activities like scouts, badminton, wushu, etc ...

This is where we can help each other out as well. Since the notices for these activities are "by-interest in distribution" as in students that are interested are asked to go and collect from teacher rather than teacher giving each notice per child, let's keep each other informed on this. So far, I know that DANCES has been given out, so if your kids (esp girls) are interested, tell them to go and ask the teacher about it.

My son can be a blur sotong when these notices are given - as in too busy chatting while teacher talking/distributing !!!!!

Mommy

Ooops!!! my son will definitely take back "no" notice. So far, he is not interested in any of the activities except for fencing. Anyway, will asked son what the teacher announce.

As far as I am aware the latest 2011 Schedule/Time-table for Co-curiculum has not been pasted on the windows of the guard-house, only the 2010 one but that should serve as a good guide (I don't expect too much changes if any) ;) - most activities are on Saturday and Sunday but some are on weekdays if my memory serves me correctly.

It will all depend on the co-curiculum activities that he is participating - so far I know that DANCE activities are held on TUESDAY MORNINGS - I got one father "bitching" to me about it just now over lunch as his youngest daughter (Std 1) wants to join together with the big sister (Std 4) and it is becoming a logistical headache for the father  - as usual, I lent a sympathetic ear over a bowl of currymee and kopi, of course ... :p ;) :D - my tonic to solve all Lick Hung parental woes ... :D

Mechanical Pencil Silent "Revolt"

Despite the teachers' warnings, my son's classmates are all still using their mechanical pencils. He told me that he also wants to join them (in solidarity) and I asked if they are all punished, then how? He said he has spoken with his friends, they will all be punished together - boys and girls ... wow

So, if teacher wants to punish and confiscate then the whole class will also be punished and everyone will have no pencil to do any work/homework - hmmmm ... go on children "strike" leh .... :p

Let me see, the last time I checked  , they are kids aged 8 years old and NOT 18 years old hahahaa .... :p I said, as a father, OFFICIALLY I have to advise/tell you to follow your teacher's order .... ( ... so said the father that was caned at least once a year throughout his academic years for various offences ... :o )

He asked me IF I can talk to the class teacher about it for his class and friends :) , I said this directive is from the Headmaster, not the class teacher. Then he kept quiet and said he will talk with his friends later ...

I must say I am eagerly waiting to hear their responses ... ;)

Surprisingly, son said teacher allow them to use mechanical and everyone in the class still using mechanical...

Personally, I am ok with mechanical pencils at school for writing (but not during exams when shading in the answers sheets) - less messy and the writings by the kids are neater and clearer. If the school reasons that the pencils are dangerous and can wound someone from stabbing, so can normal pencils or their litle pinky fingers !!! :p

Anyway, this is one ruling, I am not interested to "fight" with the school management EXCEPT for them to be consistent in their ruling and enforcement - right now, it is havoc and chaotic, every class and child seems to be doing whatever they like, and those that follow the rules (like my son) feel so "stupid" for doing so and starting to rebel !!

Mommy
11-01-2011, 01:33 PM
Agree with CM. If the school wants to have such ruling, they should be consistent to every child.
When I told my son about it, he was so defensive saying that his class teacher never say so. That he will continue using.
Frankly, find that writing is much better with mechanical. Infact, son insist on 0.7 instead of the normal 0.5 as 0.7 is darker and clearer.
Let's see after a while whether there is any consistency in the ruling.

Wah !! :p - these kids really do gang up faster than I expected - immediately after school, 4 of them came together with my son to "chat" with me  - 2 cute girls and 2 boys. The leader is the girl - the one my son fancies, no wonder

I listened to them giving me the explanations and reasonings why mechanical pencils are good, sharp, neat, tidy, cheaper and one even added good for environment, no need cut-down trees - wow !! ;) etc etc ... and lastly, they said they needed an ADULT spokesperson to talk to the teacher for them. I asked them if they have mentioned these reasons to the teacher and she said yes but teacher said it is the HM and school decision, so now, SOMEONE has to go and talk to the HM  !! hahahaa .... guess who was the "chosen" person/sucker ? :p

I said, since this is a school-wide matter and involved many students, parents and HM, the best I can do is to raise the "problem" during the PIBG meeting - where problems like this are discussed, but for now, they just quietly use when teacher is not watching but bring normal pencils also, just in case!

I must say I AM IMPRESSED !! :) They are only Std 2 !!

I agree with the school HM and management on this matter. If I am not mistaken it used to be a directive/guide from the Kementerian Pelajaran that students in lower Standards 1-3 should use normal 2B pencils for the simple matter that it is cheaper. I understand that in an urban school like Lick Hung where every kids can afford one or even two mechanical pencils, but not so in the rural schools.

Furthermore, at their young age, the children tend to lose their things, so it can be costly as well. The directive is aimed at all schools nationwide including urban schools with well-to-do parents.

Hence, it does not surprise me to hear that "officially" the school has to tell the students that they cannot use mechanical pencils as per directive but they may close-one-eye or zero enforcement after that. SJKCs are well known to provide lip service to Kementerian Pelajaran directives and guidelines, which is fine, in my opinion, as most of the times, the directives are dumb to start with

However, I see that there are some overzealous teachers which is normal in all schools ;)

Co-curiculum Activity - Std 2-5 - MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD

Another co-curiculum activity for Std 2 to 5 , MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD CLASSES - Saturday classes (8 session) - cost from RM70 (Std 2-4) and RM150 (Std 5).

Things must have changed a lot since the 1970s and 80s when I was taking part and representing my schools - back then it was FREE and only the top 10-20 students in Mathematics were selected. Nowadays, it seems to be opened to everyone who CAN PAY !! :(

Errrrr .... you may want to double-check against the FULL ACTIVITIES time-table BEFORE finalising, as a number of things happen on Saturday mornings besides Maths Olympiad IF your aim is to keep her away from the TV - some of the "sports" , uniform units, etc are also on Saturday mornings, hence my careful selection ;)

You guys are welcome :) , my son's teacher insisted that the kids stick the notices into their NOTICE Book before going home, hence the "hum-choy" quality of glueing !! :D

My son's teacher is very particular about this. Apparently she scolded a few of the kids for not bringing their glue sticks to school to stick the notices and for not having their parents sign off the homework notice book. She told the kids that they are now in Std 2, big boys and girls now, so must behave more responsibly and she cannot allow them to chinchai-chinchai in their work, duties etc ... like in Std 1. I am a bit puzzled here  Did your child's class teacher actually tell them that they should start to do things themselves like cleaning their own school shoes, pack their own bags, check their own homework, make their own bed, tidy up their desks, sweep their room clean especially as part of the Pendidikan Moral (PM) ... etc ? During the school holidays, he even volunteered to sweep the car porch and water the plants daily until some of them drowned to death !! ;)

My son's class teacher, she did all the above during the last few weeks of Std 1, telling them that next year in Std 2, all of them will be big boys and girls (as she did not know then that she will continue to be their Std 2 teacher ;) ) and she repeated her "instructions" again at the start of Std 2. Hence, my son who is now becoming more "responsible" for his own work and stuff.

Now, we don't even have to shout at him to start his homework or pack his bags, he will do everything as soon as he finishes his dinner, he will finish his homework and pack his own bag for the next day, and get me to sign all sorts of books and notices. After he has done all the above, he will ask the mommy to come and double-check.

I am not complaining, but so far so good :) Point I am making here is that the school teacher makes a BIG DIFFERENCE in shaping some of the children's attitude, thankfully, my son listens :) . So, you may want to ask your child if their class teacher has taught them some of the above stuff, and if yes, why they did not follow ...... tell them that it is a good thing that the teacher is teaching them to be responsible and grown-ups.

Drill into the child that lessons taught in Pendidikan Moral are important even though the marks in exams are not counted in the aggregate. My wife places a high premium and value on the subject and my son has to do a number of workbooks and score well on this subject. She reasoned that although not counted in Lick Hung exams, PM is a good additional material for Chinese lessons as well as teaching the kids to be good and responsible.

Whoa, I too would like that teacher to become my son's Moral teacher !
His teacher did not mention anything of that sort, just teach only, apparently.
But after letting him read your post, he said he would learn to make his bed !

Although Pendidikan Moral mostly teach what we adults view as common sense, it does place an impact on the young innocent and impressionable minds.
However I don't place importance on the test marks.

I know :) !! Wifey and I also expressed similar surprises when my son came home, told us what the teacher said and what they must do :) Now, you know why the parents in that class love the class teacher to bits !! :D

According to my son, this teacher always like to remind the children what she has taught them in the past and then asked them why they did not follow or obey instead of shouting/screaming at them. Then all the kids will be ashamed and "kwai-kwai" follow .... she rarely uses the rotan except for really naughty cases, my son got the "distinction" of kena rotan from her at Std 1 :o :o This year, he said he will want to avoid that hahaha ... :) I said GOOD RESOLUTION for 2011 !!

Seriously, I am also trying to find out how she handles the "rascals" - I mean, none of my son's friends have a bad word to say about her  I know that she rarely canes them, she scolds them when they get out of line (to be expected) but no more than that.

She is known be to easy going and fun teacher among the kids. Maybe it is her commanding presence, voice and the way she tells you something - straight forward, firm and you know she means BUSINESS and SERIOUS ... even I was scared stiff when she once blew her top and I was just outside the classroom ... :o I remember hearing some of the kids saying to each other, "Teacher XYZ will scold if you do this ! " and the offenders just stop - AMAZING !!

Somehow, she has managed to gain the kids' trust, high regard and respect and from what I see, none of them wants to disappoint her or be in her bad books, including the regular "naughty ones" :p Believe me, I was delighted when she was made their Std 2 teacher !! :D

While for personal selfish reasons, I am happy with that, I think her impact and contributions will be even greater if she had be given another new group of Std 1 kids to experience her positive teaching values.

The example I give here of my son's teacher is not to say she is fantastic or great, I am sure the other teachers are just as good and kind. What I am hoping to highlight is that the teacher is a very powerful role-model and can have tremendous impact on the kids - can be both positive and negative.

I wish MPSJ or traffic police can do something about that too :) Rich pickings in traffic fines too ;) Perhaps, you may want to suggest this to our MPSJ councilllor Rajiv under TRAFFIC problem - http://www.usj.com.my/bulletin/upload/showthread.php?t=29552 :)

To be honest, I have never seen any MPSJ or traffic police in front of Lick Hung - perhaps they are "scared" of the parents hahahaha ..... you never know how many Datuks, Datuk Seris, Tan Sris you may accidentally offend (esp their wives) if you booked them !!

Had a chat over lunch with some of the mums from my son's class about the class teacher, discipline etc ... Hmmm, interesting bits and pieces of info that my son has conveniently "left out" in his daily school happening reporting :p

It seems the class is only good and obedient when the class teacher is in, they go CRAZY and HAVOC during the other teachers sessions - REAL RASCALS  and apparently have been paid special visits by discipline mistresses a few times during Std 1, walau !!! :p :D There I was thinking what a bunch of sweet little angels hahahaha ..... :p Some of the mums look at me in disbelieving fashion like I was from MARS or somewhere loony !! :o :o

Wifey was asking me this morning, 1) Why is the school exam so early? and 2) Will there be enough material to be examined?

My answer was:

1) School management must be very free after CNY, so have an exam to fill up their time !!  (I am being sarcastic ! )

2) This one is EASY, just look at the amount of homework piling in daily and RUSH through the school syllabus by the teachers, they will have enough alright ... SIOW ONE !! Are they in a RACE or what ?

Personally, having 4 exams per year is a bit too much - 3 is just about right :)

This short notice is to inform that tomorrow is a SATURDAY CLASS (use Monday's timetable).

For the first-time Std 1 (and all other Std also) parents, PLEASE GO EARLY - it will be ONE HELL OF A MAJOR TRAFFIC JAM around 12:30-1pm as most parents will be sending/picking their children to/from school instead of using the daily transporters/buses - this is a regular Saturday class feature - JAM is 2X worse than regular days  :p :D You have been forewarned !!

Sad to say, I was told by some senior parents that Lick Hung is very UPSR exam and donation drive (money) focused :( - everything else is of low priority including Pendidikan Moral, Art, Physical Education, Music etc ... only lip service. I know that many parents have resorted to additional tuition for extra-curiculum activities since the school could not care less with the EXCEPTION of Chinese orchestra, Chinese dances and Chinese drums - these activities that got the school the "Kluster Cermerlang" status.

Birdy is absolutely correct. However, I am sure you can spare a small angpow for the school PIBG :) (and come this year PIBG meeting, I want to know how they are spending all the donated monies - I hope they do a better job of presenting the accounts than last year - no details given unless someone asked and the PIBG were hoping to breeze through it - it is a lot of money, almost RM1million + ! )

It was mentioned during 2010 PIBG meeting that it is the school management's target to start building the new block by 2011 (11 months left - hope they can finish it properly and safely !! - hopefully NO hanky-panky "thiew kung kam liew " construction business - precious children lives at stake).

It was also mentioned that the number of classes will be shrunk to 10 classes per standard and each class around 40 students in a gradual reduction starting with 2010 when classes were cut from 14 to 10 and student per class to around 45-50.

By next year - 2012 - THE WHOLE SCHOOL will be SINGLE SESSION - JAM LIKE HELL in the early morning :( - already told my son, we are walking to school from 2012 onwards !! :D

Mommy,

Relax .... :) While exams are important to help us benchmark the kids progress, don't go overboard with it, we don't want to make their and our lives miserable as a result of exams - consistency in daily school work and understanding the material taught is of paramount importance here.

IMHO, the first exam is way too early and how the kids will perform is very much based on what was learned and remembered from the previous year. From what I have gathered, the first exam for Std 1 is like the revision of Tadika and for Std2 will be the revision of Std 1 esp for the languages and Maths. Science will be based on the syallabus taught to date.

Start of Co-curiculum Activities (This Weekend 12/2 - 13/2)

This is to inform some of the parents who may be interested to send their childen for co-curiculum activities, based on the notices that I have got, most of them will kick-start THIS COMING WEEKEND 12/2 and 13/2 :)

PS: For Std 1 parents, "OFFICIALLY" the Std 1 kids are not invited to join in the co-curiculum activities (too small/young) BUT if your kids are really keen, no harm to go and ask the teacher conducting the activities. If I were the teacher I will be happy to accept :) I know a number of Std 1 kids last year who have joined but it was too late when I found out for my son (already June/July then). BTW, DON'T QUOTE ME :p :p

Examination Postponed - by a week/few days ? (TBC)

Yesterday, on the long drive back from kampung after CNY, (hell of a journey !! :( ) , my son mentioned to me that the teacher has postponed their exams by a few days or a week later, and I was like WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, HOW COME I DON'T KNOW, WHERE IS THE NOTICE ??????

Upon further questioning, my son replies were classic Lick Hung kids :p - " pu chee tau", cannot remember, too long ago, teacher only says, no notice, did not pay attention, last thing teacher say before class over for CNY so no-one listens or write down etc etc , (blame it on the teacher , of course !! ) - I think too much firecrackers has burned his memory cells liow !!

So, anyone has any MORE RELIABLE NEWS on this development ? (or is it my son's tactic to delay his revision !!) :p

The crooks nowadays are It-savvy and smart also - they no longer target desktops - they prefer notebooks/laptops, handphones, LCD, easier to carry and resell.

My wife had a good look at the exam scope and informed me that this week will be very HECTIC if the teachers aim to meet the scope ... each subject still a chapter or two short of the scope :(

currymee,

Thank you for the exam scope and new dates of examination. Only after seeing your postings did my daughter-in-law checked with my grandson and got the notice from him - apparently he had "forgotten" to tell his mother ;)

BTW, I am surprised but glad that you are still active here. I was expecting you to start toning down seeing that you are now a "veteran" and from what I have seen, most parents become less and less active in their children's studies until UPSR year.

Currymee need to stay active to burn the extra calories gained from eating currymee regularly :D :D

Just kidding ... :)

Without currymee intiative, I think most of the parents. especially those busy with work will be living in the dark. I really really appreciate and thankful to Currymee for his initiative. Good job, Currymee.

Cikgu Fong,

You are welcome. I abide by a simple rule - as parents and given the accesibility and availability of Internet and the usj.com.my forum, if we don't help each other then I think we are missing out on one of the wonders of integrating technology, community, social building, education and parenthood :)

Also I believe in an old Bible saying, "It is more blessed to give than to receive ... (something like that)" ... so this is one form of my giving and sharing to all :)

Hahaha ... :D you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT - my doctor says I need to lose 10 pounds .... :(

BTW, let's try and make this thread a Lick Hung parents initiative and thread and not currymee's alone .... :) - the last time I have my own thread (newbie) (http://www.usj.com.my/bulletin/upload/showthread.php?p=491921#post491921), KWChang closed it down for talking too much and everything under the Sun !! :p :p

This may sound a bit drastic BUT it works for my son during Std 1, and since then he has never lost a single exercise book.

I told him if he loses any exercise book, he has to recopy by hand (not daddy goes to photocopy and paste) every single page AGAIN !! :p

I photocopied from his friend but got him to recopy by hand into a new book over his weekend and during his play and TV times, and he never forgets it !!

Moral: Let them know that they cannot get away with just "tidak apa" attitude - there is a penalty, not scolding or beating BUT to repeat again and take up their precious fun, TV, games time ...

...Thanks currymee, this is also my plan. Unfortunately, I am full time working & have hard time getting son to borrow the book from his friends to recopy. I was so upset that I caned him bcoz of this. :(

Do take note of the following possible reasons for children misplacing their books:

1) Genuine cases of books misplaced as a result of constant shifting/rotation of sitting arrangement in class.

2) Playful friends hiding books - trust me, my son kena many times from his "girl friends" My solution: I told him the next time another girl hides your book, tell her, daddy told him to kiss her - problem solved instantly !! :p :D

3) Teachers misplaced BUT will not admit .... this one also many times I have heard such cases ... what to do .... :(

4) Don't want or did not do homework - SO DECLARE LOST to teacher and parents and hoping to escape - IMHO this is the REAL PROBLEM you have to tackle and solve promptly and firmly if it occurs.

So you have to be able to distingush 4) as it is a common problem and one that must be tackled or else their studies will be affected badly.

Attention Std 1 (2011) Parents

I have got some past year papers for Std 1 in digital format (PDF). Although the syllabus have changed from KBSR to KSSR, if you are interested to have them, please PM me your email addresses.

Std 2 Parents

I am in the process of trying to secure some past year papers for our kids, if I am successful, I will let you all know :)

NOTE: IMHO, the objective of past year papers is not to spot question but to familiarise the kids with exam format and scope of exams - so any year will do :)
