.... Asked my son and he said the teacher said he does not qualify even though he was "democratically elected" by his classmates coz he has been too naughty and talkative for the year, caned too many times (does not hurt apparently), punished left, right and centre BUT he still loves her !!! :p :p :)
Note: "democratically elected" - apparently (TBC) the teacher ask the class who they think is best to do the job and he was "nominated" by the GIRLS in the class hahahaha .... WALAU !!!!! :D
Very funny :D So, was your son disappointed that he was not chosen to be a prefect or librarian ? I am quite surprised that your son gets on well with the girls in his class - normally, at that age, they don't like each other very much !! :)

yes birdy, in fact, i plan to replenish her set of uniforms (i keep 5 sets for a week) for next year even if she's not selected. Now just have to change the blouse from white to yellow la.
Those shops selling uniform (1 in SS15 and the other in SS19) should sell the yellow blouse...am sure...

Got that notice yesterday nite too. Daughter is selected as prefect for std 2 apparently, she was given a choice to choose btw prefect or Liberian...I thought the selection only comes after the last term report card being handed out ?

I think they shld have ... especially the one in SS19, no reason for them not to carry yellow blouse since they are so near to Lick Hung...
Now tell me, what is the name of your daughter.. I must ask my daugther to make friend with her so that your daughter can close one eye when my daughter commit fault... :D ;) ... (just kidding)

On the contrary, he wasn't disappointed at all BUT relieved that he was not chosen so he can continue to PLAY with his friends instead of "working", coming to school early, jaga Std 1 etc etc .... gave me a whole list of "duties" that he rathered not performed !! I told him that it is an honour and good thing IF his teacher chose him, he said, never mind, she can give it to some other boys who want it more .... :o :o

I think his first month "heroics" of giving tissue papers to crying girls in the class must have helped .... :p Cost me a lot of packets that first month - told him to give one sheet at a time not the whole packet ...
Even until now, whenever one of his classmates forgot to bring this or that ... he will lend them or give them one ... daddy will go POOKKAAAIIIII like that !!!! :p :D (just kidding)

The ONLY MAJOR SHOCK that you will get as a new parent of Lick Hung student is the amount of homework (and it is a lot !!) .... however, if you discipline yourself and child to do them each evening, after the first month, it will be become routine and smooth sailing ... :)
Most important is for you and spouse to project the right message to the child that homework is a necessity to help reinforce and strengthen what was taught and learned at school and that both of you agree and support the homework. Then the child will quit grumbling after the first 2-3 weeks and happily continue doing so ... well, mine still grumbles but he knows he has to finish and do them well  :D :D

The Std 1 children should be returning the Skim Pinjaman text books since the start of this week. So, do take note in case, your child suddenly panics and says they cannot find this or that .... :) or have to replace this or that if the books are badly damaged.

Yalor :p - wifey panicked two days ago when she found that son's BM text and aktiviti books "gone" - she usually double-check his school bag after he packs it. She was searching high and low and was about to scold son for being so careless again (yup, happened before when son left a few books in class, luckily, still there the next day) when son said teacher has taken back the books.

Dear Cikgu Fong and Sagamihara,
I think the words UNFAIR and GUILTY is a bit too strong to use. Don't get me wrong, the recent English paper for Std 1 is "tough" alright :(. My own son's performance dropped from a solid "A" to almost a "C"
However, I think the English teacher did fulfilled what Cikgu Fong mentioned about the objectives of exams and I repasted the key section of his quote below:
(
I beg to differ.
If the intention is to identify the high achievers, then it should be consistently done for all the pass 3 exams.
The previous three English exams are all within the same standard/depth, but the 4th exam suddenly up the standard so much (much tougher).
Only English shows such “abnormality”, not the other five subjects. Why ??

When you say homework is alot - what is the amount of homework a day? All subjects will have homework - 3 -4 pages per subject? My main concern is - me and my husband don't know chinese, therefore we are unable to help her in her school homework. Moreover Lick Hung's standard is so high - i'm not sure whether my daughter can cope with it.

This is going to be REALLY TOUGH - I cannot advise is to whether this will work or not, but I know that some parents in similar circumstances have done it - extra tuition and assistance for homwork or even those "an-ching-pan" like those tuition centres found around Lick Hung. I have no experience whatsoever with them, so I cannot give a definite comment. Perhaps, other parent who have similar experience can assist here.

To Newbie Std 1 Non-Chinese-literate parents,
Don't worry now. Let the kids go through the system on their own.
Most of the homework is repetitive writing, copying from textbook to exercise book, etc.
The tough homework that terrifies Banana parents is constructing sentences in Mandarin.
1) Seek help from friends
I let them learn how to seek help from friends. Get them to take down
phone numbers of smarter kids ( after 1st term exam, u should know )
or the class monitor's number who is normally more alert and matured.
2) Learn to check dictionary. This is useful skill. Teach them from young to be self-reliant. There are some simple books that pick up like first 400 Chinese characters, with writing guideline (stroke sequence), sample compound words, sample sentences. I find Kamus Bergambar that has 3 languages very useful.
3) Tuition
Provided that the little fella has time for Tuition. Certain days may have less
homework so that would be easier to include Tuition.
But most of all, do not underestimate the young kids. They usually do fine unless you have sky-high expectations that every single homework must yield 100% or A. Even in constructing sentences, let them make mistakes coz the teacher will correct them anyway.
Just stay cool and be sensible.

It has come to my attention that the teacher who set the 4th English exam is well-known for setting tough English exam papers throughout the years. I was shown some previous years papers set by her and yes, it is consistent by her standard. I was also informed that she is one of the better English teacher in the school.
From my experience, it is not "abnormal" per say to encounter the occassional "tough" paper. Like Currymee said, there are kids that have managed to "ace" the paper, so in this context, it is very much down to student's ability. If there isn't any student that got 90% and above, then there is ground and justification to call for a review.
However, if in every class, there are 5-10% that have managed to score a high 90%, then there isn't much the parents can say or grumble. The teacher can actually retorts by saying that the previous exams were too easy until such a high percentage scores 90% and above.
Like Currymee, I just told my grandson to buck up and spend the school holidays improving his English by doing more reading and exercises.

One way to reduce the weight is to buy a good bag that absorb the weight like our notebook backpack or expensive camera bag
Another is to distribute the load. The exercise book in another cloth bag or heavy duty recycle bag.
Make sure the water bottle is with a soft strap.
Another is to do spot check on the contents. Kids like to bring unneccessary stuffs and stationery, ie diff colour pencils, pens and stuff .
Bags was discussed earlier

Like Currymee, I just told my grandson to buck up and spend the school holidays improving his English by doing more reading and exercises.
Let’s look at some numbers from LH Standard One
• Students per class are around 45-50.
• Students in top ten positions scored above 90 marks (average for the five subjects – BM, BC, BI, Math and Science). This indeed is a very high standard. For example, I know there are students with average mark of 89 but position in the class is more tahn 15.
• Classes per week : BC is 8, BM is 8, Math is 7, Science is 7 and English is 2.
Conclusion : More than 20% of students scored 90 marks in these subjects and they are in the top 10 position for every exam.
Let’s revisit the English result for the 4th exam. I was told only a few of them scored 90 and above, less than 5 per class i.e. less than 10%.
So the numbers actually tell me that either the standard of the 4th English exam is too high or the previous three exams were too simple.
Don’t get me wrong, I have no interest to criticize the teacher. The teacher has a habit to set high standard does not mean she is doing the right thing.
I don’t welcomed the fact that the UPSR English standard is low but too bad this is a reality.
School exam should reflect the standard of UPSR assessment. There is only 2 classes per week for English, reflect this fact into the standard of school exam.

Its also good to humble the students and the parents sometimes :D
No point discussing the standards, the syllabus and the no of class ... You cant change nothing unless your are the Education Minister or Education Department, just be ready for the next battle (like CM says :D)
Wifey and son didnt complain about the papers... so the questions were expected.
So next year, work harder and smarter.
My son had over 90% for English, he is with his Ben 10 and my ipod games all the time plus piano lesson, once a week but he do do the extra exercise books I bought for him plus sister past year questions. If he wants to watch TV at night, he have to finish his HW at school, on top of that he is also the class monitor.
My challenge to him is RM10 for every subject he got 90% and that goes to his education saving account and if all subject above 90% he gets extra incentive, a gift of his choice, below Rm50. I lost on both challenges to him :D
I notice he is consistent with his work and do what he is told. He is not very smart nor genius.
Coming school holidays, I will be getting std 2 exercise books for him to do. He can take his time to do it and not all holidays spend on having fun..
Earlier this year we went Universal Studio, Penang and Ipoh... that was for relaxing. Also, planning something for Xmas.
So, its not all studying only...

The reason my son in LH is - location, we can’t get other school except LH.
I told him that the bottom line is 80 marks. More than 80 is bonus, if less than 80, we have to know why and improve from there.
My son’s average marks are above 90 for all the four final exams but I never reward him in monetary incentives.
Of course, good oversea holidays is a reward but it is more like rewarding me and wifey. :D

Bro, it is indeed a huge improvement from 70 to 90. An increase in average 20 marks means the improvement in total marks for 5 subjects is (5x20 =100 marks).
I said before, LH standard is high, as far as it is within the 80s is good.
Life is fun and should not be spoiled by the school marks..

currymee & Totoro,
I have my fair share too. My girl has been quite consistent in BM, science & maths but her chinese & english were ups & downs.
If I may suggest, Totoro, you may consider letting him start works/ exercises on std 2 reference books. I always think it's easier to teach based on the reference books given that they're concised & more focused.
I did this last year, ie I finished my girl with 1 round of std 1 exercises based on the std 1 reference books purchased from Popular Bookshop. I do think that this helps in her studies as she'd gotten the basic of what is expected in a topic when teacher teaches in the class & hence, able to focus more on the details. Hope I won't be perceived as a kiasu parent :p

I cannot afford for four pax to go overseas nor branded clothing for kids and not going to spoil them with expensive stuff but let them be humble. Let them learn the value of money, earn by hard work.
The monetary reward is for their saving which they know they cannot touch till they are 21.
Education then ( my time) and now are different. Children then and now also different. Either catch up or be left behind. Certainly I agreed with CM starting them early. At least do not stop the momentum during holidays.

And when I saw him talking nicely and comparing books and comics with the other boys instead of pulling each other hairs out, kicking footballs/bottles, or kick their asses, or playing cops-and-robbers - something is amiss also - BOYS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE BOYS - they are supposed to "tear the house" down IMHO :p :p :D :D Told my son he is joining Tkwando next year for serious ass kicking action - getting docile and going "soft"!!

CM, my kid is facing the same problem like your son : not consistency in the performance. For this 4th exam and compared to the previous 3 exams, especially for English, suddenly drop like taken a roller-coaster rides like what you described.
Can you share for me, how you work with your son on getting better consistency in his studies for Std 2? I hope I can have some ideas to train my kid at this coming holidays too.
Totoro, firstly, I had a look at the Std 2 syallabus already and I noticed that it is basically Std 1 REPEATED with greater details and depth. So, my planned first step is to go through his Std 1 work again esp the last term one and for Science (from page 1 again) with emphasis on where he is weak or unsure of his understanding - STRENGTHEN THE FOUNDATION FIRST - that should take about 3-4 weeks.
Son asked me why he has to repeat the Std 1 work for coming holidays and my answer was that there are still sections which he does not know and that the tests have shown that he is not good, so we work on those areas.
After that, I will start on the first term of Std 2 work in the last 2-3 weeks. That is my plan anyway. For Mathematics, I plan for him to memorise and know his timetables inside out and upside down 1X1 till 12X12.

It is not so much "violent" content but more HERO images ... I have carefully selected some of these HERO movies but always stressing upon him that it is GOOD vs EVIL, hardwork, training, discipline, justice, no cutting corners, no shortcuts (like Darth Vader dark-side coz he took shortcut and cannot control his temper) etc etc ...
Even told him that it is OK to fight to DEFEND yourself but never strike the first blow ... whoever strikes the first blow is WRONG and EVIL.
( Wifey just kept quiet when I teach him this ... and then on the side, she will teach him BEST IS NOT TO FIGHT and WALK AWAY !! :p )
hahaha ... now we are entering the realm of extra-curicullar lessons for BOYS ...

Currymee,
As an ex-HM, I don't agree or condone what you are teaching your son about fighting in school. Whether it is in self-defense or not, it should not be encouraged or permitted at all.
Best for you to teach him to report any such incidents to the school authorities and let them deal with it rather than settle the problem himself. You have to emphasise to him that fighting is never a solution to anything.

cikgu fong, relax...am sure currymee doesn't mean encouraging his son to fight but more like teaching him not to be bullied by others.
As a parent, I 100% agree that children should never resort to fighting to get what they want for whatsoever reasons. My girl was punched, kicked and bullied in other forms by some naughty boys in her class in all instances i didnt tolerate & made a big fuss to the class teacher. To me, naughty being naughty, as long as you don't hurt others physically, I'm fine. beyond that, I will surely report you to the teacher/HM.

Hi All,
I just want to reconfirm with some parents here - Std 1 kids next year will be on the GROUND LEVEL ? Wife has been pestering me to go and buy a bag. I am thinking of a school trolley bag and was shocked to find that the bag costs a "bomb" - the Swan brand   So, need to double-check before I spend the money.
Can check on the 'smiley' brand at Jusco or Summit, reasonable price and good quality too.

currymee & Totoro,
I have my fair share too. My girl has been quite consistent in BM, science & maths but her chinese & english were ups & downs.
If I may suggest, Totoro, you may consider letting him start works/ exercises on std 2 reference books. I always think it's easier to teach based on the reference books given that they're concised & more focused.

Initially, there was (as expected) a lot of grumbling about this and that, being "cheated" :D etc etc ... but after a few questions on plants, weed, roots, leaves etc ... turns out to be a real educational session for me and him as he keeps on asking all sorts of questions until I have to stop and say I am no botanist, not an expert so I also don't know :o !!!

As an ex-Science teacher, I am glad that you also noticed that there is NO SUBSTITUTE for good hands-on experience. All the theories do not sink in as fast as getting your hands dirty, so to say. I came from the old school in teaching Science where exploring Sciences with your five senses is the best way to learn and educate the young. Sadly, in Malaysia, we have decided to substitue everything with computer. While I agree that computers do help, it should NOT replace the basics which it seems to be doing so.
Urban kids (like those in Lick Hung) suffer from this disadvantage where they have never seen, feel, touch or play with REAL ANIMALS, PLANTS or the environment. It will be better for the school that they fully utilise the little patches of green they have to grow fruit trees, plants and flowers and if situation permits rear chicken and fishes. My grandson thought that chicken come from Giant/Carrefour and are start naked (fully dressed) until I took him back to the kampung and asked to chase one for dinner, he really learned a lot from that little episode. :p - (We went out for dinner that night - no chicken was caught hahahaa ... :D )
In the old rural school where I used to teach, Science classes always include field trips to look and touch real coconut, the coconut trees, leaves, stem etc etc and discussed about their multi-uses,... mangoes, durians, rambutan trees, catch fishes, touch and descale them, catch ants and grasshoppers to study insects, chickens etc etc ... in other words, Science is ALIVE and REAL to them even though most got Bs and Cs in exams
One simple experiment you can try with your kids apart from what you are doing with the plants in the garden, is that the next time you want to cook a fish, get the kids to get and feel and touch it and tell them to identify the parts - don't worry about it being smelly, scaly, dirty whatever, they will learn a lot from that small experiment.

Just for discussion purpose, actually what is no good about streaming of classes? To me, it should be more advantage as it creates some pressures to the children to study harder (and this is what will happen to them when they start working!). On the other hand, it will help to mix around and enable them to get to know more friends.

For the purpose of your discussion on Streaming (tracking), have a read on this article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streaming_(education)
I can now understand why Lick Hung school management does not apply streaming when majority 80+% of its student population are mid-high ability (As and Bs), hence the negatives will outweigh the benefits.
Streaming will create unnecessary stress and pressure for the kids in Lick Hung. It is already super-competitive within the classes. In the last exam, my son average only drops by less than 1%, and position in class by a whopping 10 places !!! Scary !!

I think it is to avoid the "streaming" / kiasu mentality in some parents - although I am sure the school has a complete listing of everyone in merit order. Put it this way, no parents like to see their child at 460/460 or 300+; so better just the position out of the whole class than Std; esp when difference between the top 100 and 300 could be as little as 5%.
That is one of the reason why I set my own benchmarks for my kids - try and score 85+% on average - and if he hits 90+% average - all the better. :)

Streaming does help where the disparities in performance between the top and bottom of the group of students are huge and glaring - i.e.more than 50% - in that context, it is helpful for both the strong and weak groups to be separated and due attention paid. However, as highlighted in the Wikipedia article, the weak tends to get weaker as the better teachers are usually not assigned to them, and honestly, no school will assign their best teachers to teach the worst students ALTHOUGH in theory, that should be the case ! So, this is where the INHERENT FAILURE of streaming comes in.
.... Put it this way, no parents like to see their child at 460/460 or 300+; so better just the position out of the whole class than Std; esp when difference between the top 100 and 300 could be as little as 5%.....
IMHO, and IF I WERE the HM of Lick Hung, if the majority are bunched together (almost homogeneous in performance) within a narrow band (say around, +/- 20%), then SELECTIVE streaming TO ASSIST the weaker and poorer students should be implemented rather than stream the best and majority - that will be counter-productive and create pressure/tension.
The bottom 10% may be identified and given extra classes or lessons on Saturday and Sunday. In my old rural school, some of the teachers do volunteer on a rotational basis to provide these extra tuition whose costs are borned by the PIBG.

I posted this on 23-Aug-2010, post #973
LH academic standard is high… ....
The ranking/position in class is not a true indicator of student’s academic achievements. The average percentage is a good reflection – if they can score more than 85%, I would say it is a good result.
That’s why LH does not have “elite class” like other schools. The average level is as good as those “elite classes” in many schools.
Just to share, my son average marks in 1st exam was 96 and position in class is within the top 4. When his average marks dropped to 92 in the 3rd exam, his position dropped 11 places.
Honestly, I don’t like this type of intense and ultra-narrow gap. I fully agreed with Currymee, the average marks should be the measurement of the kid academic performance. I remembered reading a post - a forumer here whose daughter was in LH before, position in class around 16-22 and she still comfortably scored 7A in UPSR.

Very learned view, cikgu Fong. I couldnt agree more.
I am a parent who strongly oppose to streaming practice in young learners because I won't want my kids to be pressured when it comes to academic learning. Learning should be fun & in many ways, eg arts, music & even learning to mix well with peers should be encouraged & promoted in schools rather than just training kids to score in exam.
If schools which stream students according to the smarts & the weaks could, at the same time, focus to ensure that teachers/parents will not just single- mindedly emphasis on their academic results (which means, at the same time schools focus on outdoor activities for fun (not for pride/to promote school like for purposes of inter-school competitions), then i think it's actually a healthy thing to adopt.
Sadly, the reality being, once kids are divided into smarts & weaks, the weaks will be neglected whilst the smarts will be put into pressure cooker to make their parents, teachers and schools proud. It's just human nature.
Though i agree that they will eventually be subject to peers competition when they grow to higher grades or start working, but why the hurry ? let them enjoy their early days in school before they face such realities in life later.
Just my 2 cents...

I was thinking if the streaming can be done less competitive way (or less pressure way)... as mentioned, the reason I support class streaming is because this will enable the children to widen their circle of friends. Instead of streaming classes based on academic results, they can stream the class by mix. Just an example... they can take all classes students bearing number 5, 10, 15, 20 to class 2A and 6,11,16,21 to class 2B and so forth... isn't this a win-win situation that they can consider?

Yes, I am also curious :) - how did the school perform ? Although, as an ex-HM, I don't pay too much value on this short-term statistics because each year the batch of students are different, you may get a BUMPER crop one year (all As and 100%) and the next year is an average lot ....
The average over a period of 5-10 years is the most reliable estimate rather than year-to-year, then again, who has the patience nowadays? :(

Jan,
Relax :) Based on what I understand and was told, the Sekolah Kluster Status is confered not based purely on results - it is based on the extra-curicular activities and in Lick Hung's case, it is a Sekolah Cluster for CHINESE ORCHESTRA and DANCES.
I also know of other schools that are Sekolah Kluster for marching bands, football etc .... of course, these schools are also good academic schools BUT not the main reason why they are "clustered".
Why do you think Lick Hung got so many functions/dinners ? - orchestra and dance groups need to perform regularly ;)
BTW, I also hoping that some other parents can post on how Lick Hung perform in recent UPSR ? It seems that it was better than previous year as the HM and his Assistants were seen smiling and laughing when the results were officially released (based on sources  )

Don't stress too much over the UPSR and exam results or school status - there is more to life than good academic results. It is more important that the children are taught values, honesty, responsibilities, integrity, trustworthiness, discipline, hardwork and all the good moral and social values than just scoring straight As and 100%.
A school, whether cluster or high performance (HPS) that does not inculculate these values is NOT A GOOD SCHOOL for the society and country - it is a super "kiasu" school and the school management should be changed for the good of the society.
It is just like being a very rich man but totally corrupt (too many to name in Malaysia) or to be an honest and just person with decent means.
I noted that Pendidikan Moral (PM) is not taken into account in the calculation of the exam averages of the children and only the UPSR exam subjects in Lick Hung. If I WERE the HM, I will not only insist that PM be included but to carry 2X weightage.

Cikgu Fong,
Unfortunately, this is MALAYSIA where for decades the emphasis has always been on EXAM RESULTS before anything else. If I am not mistaken, it is also the same in most Asian countries if not worse like what we read in newspaper/Internet about the South Korean and China's "super stress" end-of-year exam to enter universities, until office hours, traffic etc are readjusted so that the children can get to the exam halls on time !
Lick Hung just happened to become "super-kiasu" due to its students population demographic - most of the kids come from middle-upper-middle level of society and as we know, they are the most competitive and dynamic section of the society, so not at all surprising. Kids from the really rich parents are "enjoying" (vis a vis Lick Hung) themselves in the private and international schools.
As for your idea on Pendidikan Moral (PM) - errrrrr .... in theory, I support and agree BUT strictly when I look at Lick Hung's exams on PM esp with the depth of vocabulary used, better not as it will end up as another Chinese comprehension exam paper instead  ... I think PM should be taught more as an interactive subject in class and class-based assessment rather than exam.

Hahaha.... Welcome to the World of Parents with School-Going Kids :p :D
Firstly, let me say, I got no share in this bookshop (just like I got no share in Choy Kee ;) ) - I normally (80% of my purchases) buy from CASAMAC - the bookshop between Melur and Sportstoto in SS19.
Why ?
1) Good selection/range and sometimes some of the "funnier" titles that are not available in the bigger shops
2) The lady owner is very helpful and knowledgeable - so you can get some good recommendations.
3) I am card-carrying member, so got 10% discount ;)
(Note: You may want to wait and check what Lick Hung will get you to buy as part of the school workbooks when school starts - UNLESS you don't mind ending up repeating and having 2 copies of the same book! )
Overall - following the School Syallabus
For Chinese, Pendidkan Moral and Science - Oxford (SJKC series), Tunas Pelangi, EPH and PEP series.
For BM and English (Note: I used some SK workbooks as well) - Cermerlang Publishing - Buku Rampaian series for SK (not SKJC), Oxford (SK and SJKC) and PEP publications.
For Maths - Oxford and I set my own questions :p  (lagi teruk!!)
In addition, there are the other publishers like Siswasiswi (SK syllabus), Potensi, Hup Lick, Bang-Bang, United, Cerdik, Setia Emas and Gemilang. These are on more specific areas of the subjects like Grammar, Susun Ayat, Tatabahasa etc ...(depending on which part my son is weak in - and this is where CASMAC recommendations come in useful :) )
Basically, I don't get my son to do all but MIX and MATCH across the workbooks during the school term and in preparation for the exams. So for this school holiday, he has to finish all the "leftovers" :p :p

My son's classmates parents asked me this question yesterday. (We had a small get-together of a few of the kids to go tear McDonalds playground to pieces !! :p )
"Next year, Std 2, first day, what to bring to school ? " - as literal as I can remember in Malaysian rojak English :p
And then, the kids started shouting in unison, "Lau-see said must bring ALL books" , I replied "Siow !! All bloody 10kgs ????? " (and Std 2, go upstairs some more, want to break some bones and crack some skulls ?? )
Then, the parents turned and asked what am I going to pack for my son then .... ERRRRRRRRRRR .... boleh tolong anyone :o :o ??? - I said I get back to them later, after all, still got 7 weeks mah, why so kan-cheong ? !!!
Apparently, they are planning to start the "back-to-school" shopping this weekend since semua orang ada SALE !! After asking a few parents with kids in morning session before, I think backpack school bag and a hand-carry cloth bag for homeworks would be the idea choice for Std 2 students who need to climb the stairs.
Trolley bag is heavy (when climbing up), and dangerous (when walking down).

I was caught by surprised by the kids' answer to bring ALL books as per what their former class teacher said - to me that is nonsense !! I normally expect the first day to be 1) issue of time-table 2) issue of information for payment of school fees/PIBG fees/insurance/computer classes 3) some light class work, writing and Maths exercises - hence the need for some EXERCISE BOOKS, or maybe the workbooks .... but certainly not the textbooks !!

SJKC Lick Hung is one school that is really "too tensed" In my old rural school, if the kids get their school textbooks and full set of exercise books within the first week, we consider ourselves lucky !! Proper classes normally/must start by the 2nd week and this is consistent with Education guidelines.

BTW, I also hoping that some other parents can post on how Lick Hung perform in recent UPSR ? It seems that it was better than previous year as the HM and his Assistants were seen smiling and laughing when the results were officially released (based on sources  )
115 students get 7As and 83 get 6As, overall passing was 88.6% as mentioned by Jan.
HM said proundly, while others are complaining and crying over less 7As this year, LH's 7As increases (by 12 I think) though the number of students taking UPSR was lesser(by 58 I think) this year. He said, every 10 standard 6 students passing by in front of you, 2 of them get 7As. (On the other hand, on a personal note he said 7As at UPSR means nothing, no one going to look at yr UPSR result when you look for a job, he said parents are taking it too seriously).
This year there were a lot of stress on the teachers and the students , not very healthy!
BTW, I read a report about Japan's education, they just changed their system that were implemented for 10 years. The change earlier was because there was too much pressure on the teachers and students. After a review, they realised that the pressure has its positive effects - students are "smarter"! So, now they are back to thicker books.
Not every children can response positively to pressure, parents need to pay attention to their children's response to prevent unnecessary problems.

....
A few points that I like to mention here based on my own views on education and UPSR.
1) Firstly, congratulations to all those children that have scored very well in the UPSR 2010 - whether it is from SJKC Lick Hung, Tan Cheng Lock (Wawasan), Chee Wen, Puay Chai, Han Ming, Ladang Harcroft, Damansaras, etc etc ..... and even those in SK and Agama schools - they have studied hard and have put in the effort that should be commended :)
2) Rivalry in Subang Jaya - everyone knows that the 3 SJKCs in SJ/USJ are competing with each other to be the "top dog" school in the kampung, so let's not pretend otherwise. Competition and rivalry are healthy IF conducted and channeled in a healthy manner to spur our improvements and progress.
HOWEVER, PLEASE REMEMBER that the product here is OUR CHILDREN, we also want them to grow up to be high achieving, socially well behaved, have good manners, good character, high moral values, humble etc .... instead of being obnoxious, boastful, arrogant, selfish, anti-social but super high achiever.
So a tricky but good balance must be found in each parents in the way we encourage our kids ... sure we want them to do their best (where got parents who do not !!) and encourage them to compete BUT not to the extent where the negatives and unhealthy traits of competition kick in and destroy everything ...
3) Let's face the TRUE FACT - every parents want their kids to score 7As or as best as the children can do. I am sure every parent will be 2X happier if their own child score 7As and the school achieved 80% pass mark than their kids scoring only the passing marks but the school got 100% - look at yourself in the mirror and tell the truth. Will you be going around telling everyone and rejoice that Lick Hung got 100% but your child got 7Cs or Ds ?
4) Another FACT - you can put a child in the best school with personal best teacher in the world, BUT if the child is not interested or could not care less, end result still kaput !! (I have seen this a few times)
5) I like and agree with what Cikgu Fong mentioned in some of his posts about the importance of school to educate/produce good and useful citizens for the society and not just in scoring high marks in exams or workers for the industries - but to develop a CARING and THINKING SOCIETY !!
Hence, I disagree with the Lick Hung's HM on his personal remark about who cares about UPSR when looking for a job? Here he misses the point on the role of education in one's life and his own role as a HM/educator. The HM should have emphasised that SJKC Lick Hung's main role is to provide a good solid FOUNDATION and discipline for the children when they go further in their studies. The UPSR exams is an appropriate checkpoint on the strength of that foundation and discipline.
Education is not purely about getting grades to get a job !! That's is the problem of the Malaysian education system - the whole system is geared towards producing workers BUT not a thinking and caring society.
If I am not mistaken, there is an old Chinese view that - A person who is well-educated is supposed to be a positive contributing member to the society in all aspects and not just in their abilities to make money or get a job !! Even the crooks and robbers have a job .... as crooks and robbers

:
Bro,
He talked nuisance.
If the school achieved poor 7A in UPSR, his job is on the line.
I remember during a school assembly, in front of the students, he uttered such remarks – “you all are not first class, LH want first class students”
It was quite a hot debate when such remarks was reported by a Chinese daily and I nearly wanted to write to the Chinese daily to give him a piece of my mind.
LH consistently achieves good UPSR result are mainly due to two facts – the dedicated teachers, and the committed parents.
It is not easy to be the parents when you have kids in a Chinese school like LH.

Hi Fledgeling,
Welcome to the Lick Hung Parents' Support group thread :)
For 2011 - Std 1 and 2 are in the afternoon. The rest (Std 3, 4, 5 and 6) are in the morning.
It is expected/hoped that by 2012 with the construction of a new 4-storey classroom block to replace the "soon to be demolished" old classroom block next to the basketball courts, the whole of Lick Hung will be a SINGLE MORNING SESSION school - and more traffic jam   :p :p :D

Sorry ah, I am not sure if what you said is what he is, his statement could mean something to you but something else to himself. :)

Parents better get to know their children, do take note that not every child can get 7As in UPSR by working hard or have self discipline. Frankly, I have seen some of my son's schoolmates work so many times harder(like 3*more homework, 7*more tuitions) but their result never as good as his( he is not among the best). Luckily their parents know their limitation. Still, I pity the children ,I would never allow my children to go through that to get better result. I believe, if you stuff the little mind with only study and homework, the child might end up having a lot of other limitation.
Academic is just another field, just like sports, singing, dancing, etc; not something everyone can excel in doing it. In that sense, number of 7As is less important compare to overall passing percentage.
P.S. Correction, overall passing was 88% as mentioned not 88.6% as I post. sorry for the error.

I agree with your points there :) and the majority of the children should at least be able to meet the average performance among their peers. Unfortunately, the average for Lick Hung at Std 1 and 2 is around 80-85%
For the statistics buffs (extract from various sources of Chinese newspapers, of which I cannot read ;) ):
SJKC Lick Hung - 88% overall pass rate (115 7As out of 600+ students)
SJKC Wawasan - 88.6% overall pass rate (20 7As out of 130+ students)
Do your own statistics and guess who is performing better ;)

GOT !! Coming !! .... According to some veteran parents, the workbook list will be given on the first week next term, so be prepared to write another cheque again .... :(
My understanding for the "delay" is that the school wants to use the LATEST workbooks (new titles/editions) and the publishers usually release the new titles/editions by early-mid December each year.

Boys will be boys !
Yesterday, I took my son to go buy some books for him to read over the holidays. As always, we stopped at McDonalds or KFC for our lunch and had our father-son chat about things and life .... (no questions on birds and bees yet - phew !!! :p )
Then, out of the blue, he said over this school holidays, he wants to play a boy's game - football daily coz the school doesn't allow it - too rough and also the girls don't play and teacher (lady) don't know how to teach  ;) I said OK, and then later, he mentioned he wanted to buy boy's books, I said like what .... he said those about cowboys, pirates, knights, dragons, with fighting and kicking .... those type of books are not stocked in the school library coz girls don't like ....
Then I ask him what kind of books the school library keep .... he said he went there once, looked at the books available and then walked out and have never been there again voluntarily unless teacher brings the whole class. He said all girls books like Jack and the Beanstalk, Disney's Pocahontas, Aladdin, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast etc ... all got princesses .... hahahaha .... :D
Hmmmm .... so off we went and came home with SINBAD, HERCULES and PIRATES .... BTW, later wifey asked me why I buy such "violent" books .... aiyah !!!! :p :D
I wonder if the school knows that it is unintentionally "feminising" the boys ? :p  (just kidding!!) and no wonder, Malaysian football team KOYAK .... :p

Football used to be an extra curricular activity in 2009 but was removed in 2010. Kids should have the opportunity to take this as an extra-curricular activity if they are interested. Wonder why LH does not take the opportunity to enter its students for the interschool football competition as there are a lot of students who actually play at the SJCSC league and represent the club at tournaments.

Long time ago when I was a junior Assistant HM, the HM (I considered him my mentor, God bless his soul, he passed away 10 years ago :( ) discussed with me some aspects of being a really good HM, above and beyond merely following the directives and circulars of Kementerian blindly.
He said that a good HM can be regarded to be equivalent to that of a CEO of a company, where the teachers are the management team, students are the workers and the school facilities as the tools and workplace. Kementerian can be regarded as the foreign HQ that gives orders without any knowledge of the local operations  but as local CEO, there were a few things that a HM must do.
The obvious is to keep the teachers and students happy and motivated and the end result is good performance in public examinations and praises for everyone. He said the key secret ingredient is strangely the most neglected item in the school and the most abused .... the SCHOOL FIELD.
He told me that during his tenure as HM, he would not allow a single inch of the precious school field to be concreted for car park for teachers, canteen extension, building new classrooms etc .... not one inch. Why?
He reasoned that an open field of a decent size, about a football pitch and running track size, can do wonders for the school, its teachers and students morale and motivation. An open field somehow connects Man with Nature, allows fresh air, green scenery, a place for kids (young and old - teachers ;) ) to run with their imagination, play, run, grow, explore, lift their hearts and minds with they see the birds, the occassional cats and dogs (or cows) running on it. He always encouraged his teachers to take their classes to the field for PE, Science classes, Art classes, music classes or even punishment - instead of caning, run around the field !! :p All school functions and events are done in the field whenever possible including all extra-curicullar activities and uniformed bodies.
At first, I though he was just behind time .... until I became HM and then I realised the value of what he taught me when I was entrusted with a school with a tiny field - then I realised its value when I saw it every morning from my office window from morning till evening, how the children played, laughed and enjoyed themselves during the recess breaks, before and after classes. The running around and playing with friends in open field is actually good and healthy for all - exercise, fresh air and social interaction.
I remember my first comment to my daughter-in-law when I brought my grandson to SJKC Lick Hung for the first time in December last year. After hearing so much about its performance, the first I impression that I had when I first stepped in is that it is a SOULESS collection of buildings like a factory. I looked for the field and only found a small neglected patch 20ft x20ft behind the guard house, everything else is bricks and mortars ... cold and lifeless :(
If I were the HM of Lick Hung, I will dig up the main courtyard and grow grass in the middle and let the kids play on it, it will transform everything!! Then again, I retired 8 years ago ... ;) I hope the HM and PIBG are reading instead of collecting more money/donations to build more "factories" !!! Bring back the FIELD to Lick Hung ... it is OK to get dirty and muddy but you will 100X happier in life !!
I know it is difficult for urban schools and SJKCs, but I think some thought should be put into it for the future instead of cement and bricks everything !!

That's the same impression that I get of the kindergartens in USJ and Lick Hung. LH had to use the field of the adjacent school for football. There were talks that even the basketball court may have to make way to facilitate the construction of the new block.

Cikgu Fong,
I was educated in both SK and SMK where both schools got playing fields, and now that you mentioned it, I recalled that most of our fun and happy times were spent there, although the weekends were HELL when we have to wash our school shoes :( .... we even used the blackboard white chalk to "cover-up" during class inspections  !!
Apart from lack of a proper school field in Lick Hung, I also noticed that the school teachers actually discouraged the kids (esp boys) from running around ... how are they going to burn their testesterone-induced energies? The teachers (I don't blame them since they are ladies) don't seem to understand that boys and girls are DIFFERENT - boys need to get "physical" while girls tend to enjoy social interaction and talking more ...
I give you an example, my own son. In the first 3 months of school, he wants to go to school about 30 minutes early, because the teacher said so and also he can go and mingle and makes friends ... then in last 6 months, he said, no need so early, just 5 minutes before bell rings will do ... I asked him why? He said teachers and prefects make all the boys sit still, cannot play, move, walk or run about .... so boring ....and can only watch the girls play patty-cakes hahahaha .... :D
Hence, after school, I usually give him and his friends around 15-20 minutes of running around and be free as a bird to go and scratch their knees and bruised themselves :p :D

Yes, I remember that old game :)
As for the kids enjoying themselves during the school holidays, sad to say time has changed. Nowadays, you have kids as young as 3 and 4 years old being able to read, when in the 60s and 70s, if you are able to read by 8 and 9 years old, you are considered advanced for your age !!
However, I am confident that the parents in this forum are pretty level-headed when it comes to trying to get a good mix and balance between study and play. I am sure none of them will "pressurised" their kids into a mental breakdown - too precious !! :)
Understanding that to do well in SJKCs especially at schools like Lick Hung requires consistency and discipline, I can appreciate the fact that some of these parents are asking their kids to do some "holiday" work more as in keeping their motor ticking over rather than a complete shutdown resulting in a breakdown of work discipline.
Parents, get a good balance for the kids this holiday ... have more time for reading, playing and fun but do keep some hours for study. :)

That's normal esp for boys - both wifey and I must have developed an enlarged voice-box as a result of scolding/screaming over the last 12 months :D :( - this tend to happen more with boys though - so far, all the girls that I know, all very good ones, kwai-kwai all finish by 9-10 pm - my son if finish by 10pm, I KENA LOTTERY  , most nights it is around 12:00 midnight !!!
I remember 7 years ago, when I just move into this house, I always hear my neighbour screaming at the top of their voice getting their boy & girl to finish their homework. Then, I was thinking "my god, why so difficult". 7 years later...I really feel the pinch...It's damn damn difficult like I suddenly have an extraordinary loudspeaker at home. Besides, my voice will be his voice crying that he cannot finish coz too many..I wonder how he will go thru :o Std 2...I am worried for him....

Don't worry too much and relax. Just remind him that he is now in Standard 2 and older. He will do very well because he will be one year older, wiser and more experienced. He will know what to expect from his school, the homework, the exams and anything else that he had experienced in Standard 1. I will not be so concerned and fret too much.
The cultural shock from easy-going and relaxing tadika to a strict discipline school like Lick Hung will be difficult for most children in the first few months or even the first year, and come the subsequent years, they will know the system well. They may not like it but they will know what to do to get through it.
If I were the HM of a primary school, I will make sure that the best and most experienced teachers that know how to handle young children well should be placed in Standard 1 and 2. Believe it or not, it is one of the most crucial decision for a HM to make and it is actually an honour for a teacher to be chosen as a Standard 1 teacher than say a Standard 6 teacher, although it may not feel so ;)
Why? This is because how the Standard 1 teacher teaches, manages and coaches her students will have a lasting and deep impression on them as to whether they will love school, studying and develop an interest in learning. Thus, it is one of the most critical stages of a person's education although most of us don't remember them later in life. Hence, the best and most experienced teachers should be teaching in Standard 1 but alas, this is Malaysia, where exams count, so you will find the best teachers all placed in the examination classes.

Cikgu Fong,
Interesting point of view about Standard 1 teachers and to a certain extent, I agree as my son's own response to school, homework, class, activities etc are a mirror of what his class teacher teaches or tells them. My son and his classmates have such high respect and love for her that some of the girls cried on the last day of school when they found out that next year in Standard 2, she will not be their class teacher any more.
She told them that they will be big boys and girls next year in Standard 2, and she has to stay back and teach the next group of Standard 1, and she told them to imagine that they will be like their little brothers and sisters, and wouldn't they also want them to be well-taught and cared by her ? Walau! I listened to my son and his friends retold to me what the teacher said, this old man also went soft leh ..... :o

Cikgu Fong (as what I have been seeing you being addressed), thanks so much for your advice. Honestly, I have been worrying so much of my son whether he is able to cope in Lick Hung. My back up plan is always for him to study until Std 3, if he cannot cope, he will be transferred back to National or private school. After reading your advice, I really hope and believe he can cope and be proud to complete his primary in Lick Hung.
Agree with you and currymee. The teachers in Std 1 really play a great role. After half a term, I find that my son have great pride about Lick Hung. Asked him whether he wants to be transferred back to Puchong (if there is a place), he shook his head. He even mentioned that tho he doesnt have many friends (well, he's sort of introvert) in Lick Hung, he enjoys the place. Hope so, keep my finger cross x.

I think you can be smiling all the way :) . Not many children will say that. All you have to do is to continuously build his confidence and interest in learning and studying.
This is one method I always do with my son whenever he feels frustrated, I will remind him and let him know how much he has learned and progressed. And when he realised that, he will continue to do so. I will also use myself as an example by saying that I too have to continuously study and at times, I also make mistakes and does not understand, the SECRET is NOT TO GIVE UP and KEEP TRYING.
Give him examples of his previously won battles - example: He may not know how to read or spell back in Jan but now he is good, so highlight the fact that if he persevere he can do it coz he has done it before !! :)
Sometimes, a child can find a challenge very daunting and frustrating, my method is to highlight to them that they can do it coz they have overcome such different challenges before ... nothing helps a person's confidence than to be reminded that they have done it before - overcome challenges !!

Do you know what is distracting him from his homework? Tv? Games? Comics? If you can take away things that is distracting him, then it may be easier for him to work on his homework.
In my opinion it is not a good habit to have kids work till late night. As he gets older the situation would get worse, it will become more tiring for the parents to handle. If you can find a way to stop the bad habit now, it will make life easier for you in the long run.

The SJKC has some kind of social responsibility - cater for as many pupils as possible.
I don't think the HM wanted to built concrete for personal satisfaction. There's a lot of work involved and a lot of effort put in on top of their teaching responsibility. I believe, given a choice between field and these extra works, they would rather have fields. But they are doing all these, putting extra effort for us, the parents with young children that need a place to study - don't need to travel 25km away just to attend school.
The only party that can change this situation is the government - allocate land as big as(90% pun cukup) any other SK and SMK schools for SJKC.

Jenny,
Actually the reverse is now happening in Lick Hung, the school is now reducing enrollment from 14 classes to 10 classes from 2010 onwards and the plan is to reduce class sizes from 50 to 40 in the next 2-3 years.
The school plans to go fully single-session (morning) by 2012.

Well I guess you can't have best of both world right? Either way, still for the benefits of the pupils.
The school started here in 1991 with a capacity only sufficient for 298 pupils. In the next 3 years they built 40 more classes and total number of pupils in 2001 alone was 3528. Since then the school has been maintaining more than 3500 students yearly(I believe in 2010 too!).
Imaging, if the school were to keep the patches of green, in 10 years probably only 2980 pupils would have attended the school.
Anyware, I think they are able to reduce the number of pupils in 2010 because Chee Wen and Tun Tan Cheng Lock are here to share the load. So I believe they take the chance to do thing right - full day school.

Wow, I was discussing with a friend of mine who will be a "new parent" - his daughter is starting school in Lick Hung in 2011. As we discussed, I still remember exactly a year ago when I got my son ready for Lick Hung, starting with the December PIBG Orientation - all sorts of worries like Will he cry ? Will he make any new friends ? Will he be shy and timid ? Will he be bullied ? Will he pee in his pants coz he is too scared to go to toilet or ask permission from teacher to go to toilet ? Will he like the canteen food ? Will he .... etc etc etc ..... How do I cope with the infamous Lick Hung traffic jam ? (still have not figured this one out yet :o  )
Now, ONE YEAR LATER and looking back .... I WORRIED TOO MUCH :D :D , so new parents, some tips from me, it is OK to worry (natural as loving parents) but don't go overboard, somehow, the kids will cope and find their own way even though we may have our doubts, so RELAX ;)

Currymee,
I guess you must have been able to read the minds of many new parents :p :) My wife and I just went through what you were saying yesterday when we were shopping for school supplies for our Std 1 kid. She spent so much time worrying about the school bags - trolley or not to trolley (in the end, I told her that it was mentioned in this forum that all Std 1 classes are downstairs, so just get the trolley bag), how many pair of shoes, types of shoes, socks, clothes, school books, stationaries etc .... aiyo, I nearly pengsan in Sunway Pyramid Jaya Jusco Children dept (SOOOOOOOO LOOOOOONNNNGGGGGG ..... ). My kid just went over and look at the toys - SMART !! When we left, I paid RM6.00 for parking
I must get her to sit down and read what you just wrote - perhaps calm her down a bit .... she is getting "kan-cheong" already !! I have already been scolded for not checking up on those daycare/tuition centres around Lick Hung, on the transportation services, she has already taken leave for the whole Orientation classes, etc ... aiyo, DIE like this if studying in Lick Hung is tranforming my wife  !

start by bringing food, ie bread, from home and plain water. my son gets $2 a day but he seldoms spents it.

Agree with currymee. I was the same one year ago. In fact, I almost felt like crying when he went for the orientation. So worry, until I dont know what to do with myself...not him. hahaha.
I was also worrying whether he dares to ask to go to toilet as I heard quite a lot of comments from the Kindi teacher that her daughter pee in her pants coz the teacher said, cannot go to toilet during class. They have a time to go to toilet and if the kids dont go, they will have to wait until the next hour or so. Knowing my shy and timid son, I was worry hell!!!
Now, I think back, he actually manage to strive thru year 1, quite happily tho. He is lucky, his class teacher is guite good, not so strict. He He
So, new parents, worry but not too much. They will "survive"

The PIBG Orientation is like mock school days for about 8-10 half-days and last year it costs around RM100-00 (dunno about this year) as it also include canteen food and break. The kids will learn to mingle and get to know some of their would-be teachers and classmates when the school starts in January, doing some exercises in BM, English, Chinese and Maths - BUT NO HOMEWORK - so that was a bit deceptive - coz when real schooling starts, walau what a shocker when the first load of homework arrives and you realise that it takes your child HOURS TO FINISH !! :p

Dear New Parents of Std 1 2011,
Consider this an advice for the kids to enjoy a better start and less traumatic Std 1 ... ;)
I know it is a hassle, but please do consider making some time to go and buy the exercise books for your kids this week or at worse, on the actual Orientation Day itself. As far as I am aware, and based on what I experienced last year, the new Std 1 parents are expected to queue up and buy the exercise books/workbooks for the kids at the school bookshop, (CASH TERMS ONLY - approx RM200 (max - if you buy everything) and bring along a pen to fill in the booklist) there is NO CLASS COLLECTION purchase unlike those in Std 2,3 etc .... (senior parents - please correct me if I am wrong here :o ).
You don't want the stress of buying exercise books on actual school days or your kids coming home "stressed" or unhappy that they don't have any books - spare them that trauma :( . I still recall the incident that prompted me to start this thread/forum when a mother was freaking out/crying at the start of school in 2010 when she did not buy any books and her daughter was crying in class - see http://www.usj.com.my/bulletin/upload/showpost.php?p=399152&postcount=7

By the way, I didn't buy any new clothes or shoes for my son as the old ones still ok. Will just get a new bag for him. Dunno which is good, any recommendation.
Bad mommy huh...no new things for school

Unfortunately for my son, he will start school next year with a pair of glasses - went to see an eye specialist and he was confirmed with myopia. The little boy is now depressed and I am thinking of 101 ways to cheer him up .... :( :( I told him that Xmas is just around the corner, so this weekend, we can go shopping for a toy but his mood is not there .... :(

Any particular reason he is unhappy with a pair of glasses?
Oh dear!! tell him its ok. Many genius wear glasses. So he is one of the genius. :)

He felt "defective" .... I will try that point of view and angle on him. I think his concerns are more related to the fact that he is not able to particpate in active games although I have told him otherwise.

Hahaha .... :p He has cheered up a bit now when I told him all his "girlfriends" and his best friends in class also wear glasses, so now he can go to school in Std 2 and compare glasses with them  :D If his friends wearing glasses can still play active games so why not him as he plays with them .... that got him thinking a bit .... :)
Aiyoh - don't tell me, come Std 6, his whole class will be wearing glasses, now almost 20% are doing so .... :( and from what he described to me about a few friends who always walked to the front of class coz they cannot see from the back, looks like another 6-7 children will be joining him on the myopia list .... poor kids.

Bro, you are a good man.
Started this thread to provide pro-active advice and experience to new LH parents.
IMHO, if an adult can easily yield to tears just because she hasn't bought books for her kid, there is an individual problem. Gosh, I just can't figure out what is the big problem without books for a few days in the beginning of the school.
The only occasion which I think worth to go to school earlier is during the school registration day (after your kid has confirmed a place in LH). LH allocates students to different classes (A, B, C,,,,J ) according to first come first serve basis. My experience told me that class A & B normally are flooded with children from the LH teachers and hence more attention are given.
Just my observation.

Std 1 - 2011 Booklist
Since I happen to drop by for my weekly (since school holidays) currymee fix at Choy Kee - hope this may be useful :)
Note: New Parents, you don't have to buy the textbooks (section A) - but DO BUY all the PILIHAN items (section B)- it is actually compulsary for Lick Hung but you know-lah, Malaysia being Malaysia, officially NO extra workbooks
2011 Std 1 is cheaper than 2010  (DEFLATION?)
BTW, school bookshop is opened until 17th December - 8:30-12 noon
and if you missed it, then you have to wait until school REOPENS on 3rd January 2011.

I refer to the 2011 std 1 book list and found that there are no English version Maths & Sains books in the list.
Is this means the implementation not to use the English version of maths & sains started from year 2011?

I think I have mentioned that the school is actively encouraging the students to answer (hence study) Science and Mathematics in Chinese. As a result of that, I have stopped my son from even looking at any Science and Maths school work in English lest he gets all mixed up - just focus 100% in Chinese and make sure his foundation in both subjects are strong and that English is to be learned separately as another subject like BM.
Well, that is the approach I have adopted, right or wrong about teaching Science and Maths in English I am not too bothered. My own experience and belief have shown that it is much more important and vital to get a STRONG and SOLID foundation in Science and Maths irrespective of language, and in Lick Hung's case, I noticed that the teachers are better versed and teach better in Chinese, so be it. :)
The kids don't do well in Science and Maths later in universities not because of the language BUT due to the poor foundation in Science, Maths and in English. Sorry to say, blur politicans messing around again. I did my Sciences and Maths in BM for my whole formal education in Malaysia and got As all the way until I finished all my formal academic education :) I am thankful that at all stages, my English teachers are good :)

Officially yes, but Totoro, please think carefully, I will not risk it .... unless your kids' English is really better than their Mandarin and have a stronger vocabulary, I do recommend studying the whole Science and Maths in Chinese for one simple reason: the LICK HUNG TEACHERS TEACH BETTER AND DEEPER (STRONGER) IN CHINESE ... or at least, in my son's class
When he came back after the first 3 months and after my discussions with the HM during PIBG 2010 on the matter and I looked and compared the teaching of Science and Maths in Mandarin and English - I just threw all the English version workbooks into the bin and told him to study everything in Mandarin .... We will worry about English as a language subject, I am not prepared to sacrifice his Science and Mathematic foundations on half-baked English versions and sorry to say, sub-standard teaching of these two key subjects in English. Since the Lick Hung teachers are well-versed in Mandarin for Science and Maths, please proceed ahead in Mandarin.
I will not let my kids' education ended up as guniea pigs for politicians stupidity in making flip-flop education policies. As parents, we must recognise where the school strengths and weakness are, and Lick Hung is not that superb in English but its Science and Maths are among the best (in Mandarin) in the country.

But, the point is our children are the last batch and still wasting time to study the maths & science in English

Currymee,
Thanks for the info - my missus saw your post earlier and has made all the necessary arrangements to purchase the books tomorrow :)
No worries, you are welcome :)
When I went over around 11am yesterday, the queue was not that bad, around 6-7 parents, but can be a bit long as most parents will be asking/repeating the same quetions :p Do I need this ? Skim Buku Teks free ? Stationaries need to buy or not ? Pilihan compulsary or not ? :D - hence, my little advice here - BUY ALL in Section B (Pilihan - workbooks), Section A - ZERO (Buku Teks) and for first timer - get most/all the exercise books (Section C) - exception could be drawing block and the holder (if you have your own) or white board ;)
Note: I have no idea what are items 12 and 13 in Section B, since I don't read Chinese :o
What really surprises me was the wholesale change in the type of workbooks used - almost 100% different from 2010 Std 1 - wow ! I guess, I should expect that when my bookshop friend told me that the publishers change the titles every year and the old titles are usually for one year print-run only - strange but true - funny business if you ask me.

Well, let's hope some senior parents can provide us with an answer - I would expect it to be the library card but apparently, Std 1 kids are not allowed to borrow books from library, so ....

My eldest son's class was being chosen to test run the KSSR syllabus 2 years ago(so to say as guniea pigs) for 3 months. I would say I'm glad that it will be implemented next year(replace KBSR) although it's a totally new things for us and next yr std 1 students shall be the 1st batch sitting for the new Std 6 public exam in yr2016, that's why all the work books are totally different. KSSR is more kind of like learn more through interacting/play and in a fun way (like teaching using the projector/slide show)and less focus on just school exams but all rounded. I think they will have less home work as my son came home most of the time no home work(maybe finished in school) and it's less stress for me :) He has more playing time at home, he is more happy and I'm happy too. Although I welcome this change(less academic), one of the chinese work book already has simple essay writing  OMG. Well, hopefully my younger son can cope with it and enjoy the school days.
Any parent fetching their kids home from LH passing by USJ9? Need carpool.

Hi Parents with kids in Std 2 in 2011,
My son told me that Std 2 classes will be on 2nd floor. Will your kids be still using the bags with rollers or without. My son keep pestering me to get one without roller so that he can carry upstairs easily.
Any advice? :p
