Yes. There will be no class for Standard 1 students until this Thursday. So, make full use of this break to do final revision. :)

For those parents, that may be worried .... please look at the table near the bottom for UPSR "Cuti Belajar" break schedule - not only Standard 1 but 3,4 and 5 also (except today) :D - I feel "sorry" for the Std 2 kids .... :(

Does any parent receive the notice of Lick Hung Carnival 2010?
Normally parents will buy coupons or donate or sponsors for Foods/Beverage/Games Prizes?
Could any parent share about your experience?

Anyway, today is the start of the final exams for the Lick Hung students - I am just wondering what are they going to do after that, where there are almost 6 weeks of classes?

Yes, the usual "surprise" question from Lick Hung in every exam paper - that is why the reading must cover the textbook and workbook as well - usually it will be a word or two that they have not practise but have been taught/read.

i see...didnt realise that. But I think it's a good "surprise" in the sense this forced them to think a little rather than just memorise memorise and memorise.
I also noticed the chinese papers are getting tougher and tougher. Hope she could cope with it today.
anyway, currymee, do you know if LH going to stream classes in year 2 ?

As far as what I have been informed by the HM and Asst HM (afternoon session) when I enquired early in the year - there isn't any streaming for Lick Hung except for cases of indiscipline or where the student's performance is seriously bad, otherwise, they should remain with the same group of classmates until Std 6.

currymee
29-09-2010, 09:03 AM
OK, I have checked with some "senior" parents on a few of the questions raised yesterday.
1) No streaming from Std 1 to Std 2 from their experience with their kids who are now in Std 5 and 6.
2) Teachers change all the time as the kids progress, some teachers are good with Std 1 kids (got patience and higher level of tolerance) and some are better at Std 6 sciences, English etc .... so school will choose the best teacher for the level needed for Lick Hung.
3) About streaming at Std 4, 5 and 6 - well, their kids have gone through with the same group of classmates since Std 1, so they cannot be sure on that.
NOTE: I am made to note by the parents that all these are subject to change IF the school management decides to do so. So far, from their experience and knowledge, this is the CURRENT scenario.

If I remember correctly, it is in "nominations" of RM1 or RM2, something like that.
But don't worry, whatever it is, the booth selling its stuff will give back change in "coupons" of course. :D
Go lah and enjoy with ur kid. It is going to be very very crowded. The games "classrooms" normally attract the most crowd.

So far have not heard of any streaming other than the one "special class" which I understand is primed to be the best of that year. It looks like they try to use the same teacher where possible for two years, std 1-2, 3-4 and 5-6.

1) If there is such a super-class, personally I would not want my son to be in it if he qualifies (not likely after the 1st exam fiasco - hahaha ... ) - my personal reason, I rather he joins the other normal kids and enjoys his schooldays and friends rather than being "singled out". - I know how nasty kids can be towards each other .... been there, seen it, experience it, done that .... (ex-student of such a super class)
2) if they use the same teacher for Std 1-2, I AM HAPPY, I like the current teacher !! :D

I have checked with some of the "senior" parents that I knew - so far, the ONLY TIME Lick Hung practised streaming in recent years was LAST YEAR when the kids were required to sit for a pre-school exam prior to starting Std 1 and hence streamed - apparently, the program was cancelled after a lot of complaints from parents. Hence the Std 2 (2010) is a "streamed" Std but not the Std 1 (2010).
As to whether the school will do it again - no-one knows for sure - but as a parent, I think it is good for the school/PIBG to STATE CLEARLY in BLACK & WHITE and from Day One at the start of the new school year - otherwise, any tinkering later on will be met with a lot of unhappiness. I think this is a VALID POINT to be raised and kept in mind by the PIBG and school management. It causes a lot of unnecessary concerns and anxieties among parents as the year progresses.

Told my son, if there are any books that are missing, go buy from the bookshop as and when he needs them. Decided to skip all the optionals and wait and see IF he really needs them or use them.
Realised that some exercise books will never be used anymore - grown up already into Std 2 next year :p - to flea market or not ?

Actually this game can train your strategy planning skills. It is a game where zombies are attacking your house and you need to use the plant which also as your weapon to take down the zombie. As you go higher level, the speedier the zombies attack and therefore the difficulties are higher too ;)
You can learn more by googling it : http://www.google.com.my/#hl=en&source=hp&biw=856&bih=502&q=plant+vs+zombies&aq=0&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=plant+vs+zom&gs_rfai=&fp=42cdcfe0f1684f63

No such thing as RM50-100 - it is the kids' party - just let them bring whatever they like to eat/share with their friends .... my son has already "loaded" up over the weekend shopping with all his favourite "junk" food - it seems he has already pre-arranged with his other "junkie" friends as to who bring what .... Oh.. u mean the new stall by the side of the washing basin there? I didn't notice where is the pot of oil. It's true that it is dangerous especially children can be playful .. who knows pushing one another and someone might just get burn by the oil.
 huh, got new stall for frying food by the side of the washing basin , it is really dangerous
seems most of the parents at this thread do visit the school very often....I wonder why you know so much things about the school

NETWORKS my friend, NETWORKS :D .... cyber-network like this thread, real life network when we drop off and pickup the kids at school, school aunties (transporter) network, Parkway, Choy Kee, Hock Hin networks, pasar segar, Kett Star, Speedmart networks, school teachers network (believe it or not, some teachers are also parents and have contributed a lot of info incognito - with thanks "lausers" :) ), parents network, sons and daughters in higher Std network .....
Hence, back to the NUMBER 1 reason for this thread/sub-forum, a point of reference for all the above personal and private networks .... we share information and assist each other to understand our children education at SJKC Lick Hung.

I must admit that this is a effective way to gain more information. However, I do encourage you to drop by during recess time (no need normal day - u can do it this Saturday replacement class). Just stand outside and see how and what did the children do during recess. It won't take you long, it is only 20mins break. You can see things you don't know it is happening  Try it this Saturday.

Birdy, I think you better be prepared for a MONDAY off-day - to be on the safe side. I heard that the school has applied for an off day with the PPD and it was approved. As for the Saturday NO CLASS for Std 1 and 2, I knew some parents have spoken to the class teachers and have been informed as such.
I am just waiting for the OFFICIAL announcement by my son's class teacher or by the school principal. My son said he also heard his friends in other classes say the same thing but his teacher did not say anything yet.
So if you got to make any special arrangement, I do recommend that you do so ... SJKC Lick Hung has a habit of being 100% correct when it comes to HOLIDAYS !!!! :D :D :D

Birdy, I agree with you on notifying parents - but I think we are "ahead" of ourselves as in the parents get the info faster than the OFFICIAL announcement ... this is Malaysia, you know how FAST "unofficial" news travel .... ;)
Challenger, while in principle I agree that too many cancelled classes are not good for the children, in SJKC (not just Lick Hung) most of the cancellations that I am aware of affect the Std 1 and 2, while those in Std 4, 5 and 6 actually attend MORE CLASSES than "recommended" - cancellation of other classes during public exams - UPSR, apparently is a normal practice in Malaysia for both SK and SJKC.
Personally, I really have NO IDEA what the kids are doing now at school since Lick Hung has finished the exams last week - other SJKCs have not even started their final exams (or starting this week) !!!!  Why so early ?

I can't accept the slowness.... They should inform at least 1 to 2 weeks in advance for any special holiday they going to undertake. To my understanding, a lot of companies do have guidelines when come to applying for leave... some companies require the staff to apply at least 5 working days in advance (meaning 1 week in advance). So, parents can't take leave if they suddenly declare special holiday on Monday.

Proposed matters to be discussed at NEXT SJKC Lick Hung PIBG
I noted that a few parents have made some good points recently on matters pertaining to SJKC Lick Hung - matters that maybe should be noted by the school PIBG.
So for the next coming PIBG 2011 - please highlight some of the matters that may be of concern to you just before the PIBG, we can email them to the HM :)
1) Clear policy on whether are there any streaming in SJKC Lick Hung ? - and if there are/are not, please INFORM at the start of the year in black & white - there has been too many news and rumours throughout this year and Std 1 parents basically become kelam-kabut over it.
2) Special holidays - please notify parents in writing at least 1-2 weeks earlier - even though the Kementerian may be slow in reply, school should at least prepare well in advance - this is not the first time SJKC Lick Hung holds a Carnival, I was informed.
3) Booklist - when marked OPTIONAL/PILIHAN, please make sure that it is so and not for the kids to find out later that it is actually COMPULSARY use in class.
Any more anyone .... ?
NOTE: I have decided against having the PIBG matters discussed as a separate thread as it is not good for it to end up as a school management and PIBG bashing thread and a LIGHTNING ROD (as advice by some forummers who PM me) - it is best that the matters are collated here.

Is it true that the construction of the new block will commence next year and that the only basketball court in the whole school of 3000+ students will be removed during the construction period? Does that mean that students will have one less extra curricular activity again? They used to have football using the neighbouring football field in 2009 but this was dropped in 2010 and my kid had to change from football to basketball in 2010 and next year -what sports will be available?

They can plan the carnival during school holiday. Why would they want to do it on normal week. Moreover, carnival is not in the school syllabus, or is it? I stand to be corrected.
Actually, they must think of those working parents too. Imagine once no school, parents hv to take leave... the worst part is the school never inform about this in advance!

There is no class this sat for son and monday.
IMHO, Anyway, the carnival / fun fair / Sales / lelong is to collect funds for the school. As far as I am concern, my kids already "brainstorming" what to donate/ sell and buy a month ago. This activity is definitely more important than what inside current syllabus as this activity make an entreprenuer out of my kids. You should see how the kids make money while still young. Surely, they will survive in life later on. To teach them to be independant (from govt). Its also a bonding of people with the school, you should see the amount of stuff (including vegetable) people and business are contributing / donating. :D

Strictly speaking, menonjol = sticking out (and as you have correctly put it, it can also stand for "outstanding") - HOWEVER, in the proper daily usage of BM, and when it is refered to another person, it has an implied NEGATIVE connotation - that is why it is rarely used when preparing speeches/articles for publications - just like using "Awak" - crude / kurang halus.
Then again, it does really STICK OUT (menonjol) when one reads it !!! :D :D Just like it did for me .... ;)

Rachel,
I have checked with some parents on this yesterday and they informed me(after they had checked with the school) that the classes are as per normal. Perhaps the transporter ladies could be refering to those extra classes for higher Std ?
To be safe, you can call the school office: 03-5635 1333
I tried calling just now but cannot get through - line busy. (UPDATE: Got through just now - and the office said that class is as usual)

I look forward to joining this thread NEXT YEAR (2011) when my son enters Standard One at Lick Hung :) Hope there will be another good bunch of helpful parents like you all for Std 1 next year.
Excellent news and WELCOME !! :) :) I am sure there will be new Std 1 parents next year that will be active, after all, if you all don't help each other, you will end up poorer in terms of community bonding.
In any case, you guys can use the experiences that we have posted this year as your references. This thread must have been the first ever PUBLICALLY RECORDED DIARY/JOURNAL of Std 1 parents in SJKC Lick Hung - confusions, trials and tribulations ..... ;) :p :D :D
Hmmm ... if someone ever want to make a movie or write a book, well, ROYALTIES all around hahahahaa .... :D :D

Hi currymee... have you evaluate why the poor performance? Was it b'coz of carelessness or b'coz of insufficient practice? My dotter kena 'slaughtered' on her English this time ... not b'coz she doesn't know but b'coz of carelessness. The rest of the subjects are ok... Sometimes, I am just wondering how do we correct them from the carelessness, anyone has any good suggestion?

Everyone ( grandpa, grandma, uncle, cousins, aunties, friends ) are all welcome. No need to wear uniform. Just go and have fun. It's a carnival.

In my son's case, I guess it boils down to more reading and less TV - more practice. As for CARELESSNESS, I have "kind of" adopted a fairly effective method that another parent has taught me after the last exams ... whenever my son makes a careless mistake, I get him to REPEAT 10X and in the correction, mistake again, another 10X until .... they had enough
CARELESSNESS in terms of spelling/copying back answers - that one is something the kids have to grow out of .... it is part of growing up and maturity ...

As far as my memory doesn't fail me.... there is no pre-entrance exams. It's good to let your child to participate the orientation class to get him familiarized with the environment. The teacher will give some exercises for them to do and will brief them the various locations of the school.
There will be another formal orientation on the first day of school where parent ought to attend as you need to fill up few forms and booklet and of course pay monies :D (nothing is free this world)
Hope that would give you rough idea what you could expect.... but for details, maybe currymee would be able to explain better.

The orientation is for pupils to get used to the environment, teachers, etc. The previous pre-entrance exams were for streaming purposes - this has since been scrapped. Kids had some basic exercises to do in BM, Eng, math...not sure whether this is on since streaming has been scrapped.

Correct.. unless he is eating currymee that time :D
Actually, that was how I discovered Choy Kee currymee :p :p :D :D
Since I had taken days off for the orientation and after the second day, the "lady boss" (Afternoon Asst HM) chased all the parents away and out of the school compound with her dreaded megaphone .... I still remember that incident !! So, wandering like "lost sheeps" outside with some of the parents, that was how we got to know each other and "hang out" in Choy Kee :D :D while waiting for class to finish.
The rest is HISTORY .... :p
BTW, ONE TIP to help combat the children's FEAR (that fear is of being abandoned in school by parents - and don't worry it is normal to CRY and BAWL their heads off :o ) - is to choose a MEETING POINT from DAY ONE and from then onwards, just tell your kid, come rain or shine ... MEET HERE !! (best is in and around the canteen)
Once they have become accustomed to the school environment (normally by CNY), then you can change or they will change the MEETING POINT - but I suggest you set one as early as possible and stick to it - it does wonder for the kids confidence as they know where they can find you.

Franky is a very lucky father :) Some are not so fortunate, I have seen a number of cases of crying children having to be dragged into classes in the first few days .... and their mothers holding back their tears and embarrassments. I have even helped one of them to persuade the daughter mentioning about the "meeting point" and until today, she is still there, and now gives me a BIG SMILE and SAY HELLO whenever I walked past :D
Anyway, each parent will know his/her child best, so like Franky said, take it easy, just let the kids go and have fun, learn a few basics about the layout of the school and DON'T FORGET TO GO AND BUY THE SCHOOL EXERCISE BOOKS - or else you will panic when school starts.
As soon as I know when the school bookshop is opened for NEW Std 1 parents to buy this December, I will post it online :) My advice for FIRST TIME Lick Hung parents without any older brother/sister in upper Std, just go and buy all the exercise books and workbooks (even when marked optional) in the list - other items (like colour pencils, drawing blocks etc) may be maybe not depends on you ;)

Speaking of stationaries - something you should be aware of :) . SJKC Lick Hung discourages students in Std 1 (not sure about Std 2) from using mechanical pencils (although there are students flouting this "rule"). So do take note so that your kids don't come back suddenly asking to go buy normal 2B pencils as the school teachers will ask them to do so.
There are many types and brands out there - but after much trial and errors, my choice for my son is down to Faber-Castell 1323 (2B) (all red) and Noris Staedler (2B) (yellow and black stripes). They are cleaner and last longer (don't break so easily). I don't recommend Tri-Grip exam grade pencils for writing as it is too soft and dark, smudge easily - it will be very good later for shading exams (exam grade mah !! :p ) but not DAILY Std 1 writing, makes a bloody mess everywhere !!
As for erasers, I do recommend getting the soft types - my preference is the white ones from Faber Castell - again experience from my son having torn through a few exercise books (note the paper quality is very poor and easily torn). I don't allow my son to buy those fancy fancy stuff from the school bookshop as they are expensive and not so useful.

Following on Birdy's "advice" .... you can try him/her to start carrying the school bags full laden with books up and down the staircase at hoem over the coming holidays. ;) I know this sounds crazy but do let them try once at home and see how .... my son choose to drag it up step by step and down step by step ... so the bag will be "koyak" pretty fast next year ....but better than him breaking his back.

Majority of kids that I have seen in Std 1 carry those school bags with wheels including my own. Std 2 onwards, I don't know yet, have not decided/finalise since he will be going up and down the stairs in Std 2, so far, son is still happy with the wheelies ....
Most likely, I will not be purchasing a new bag for the first one week of Std 2, let him try first before deciding .... son has a backpack for travelling, so he can use that one first if he wants to try ....

My dotter has chosen backpack style.. I agreed with Currymee, to let your kid try out first.. see which one suit better. I do agree that the wheels actually add on more weight to the burden the children have to carrry.

Hi Karen - Welcome !! :)
1) Orientation on 30 Dec 2010 - my advice is to be with her as that will be the first time, all 400+ kids will be gathered together and they will go to their respective classes and meet their class teacher for the first time. Good for you to also know and see who is the teacher (and if she gives, take note of the teacher's hp no.) and also get to meet some parents of your child's classmates. On that day alone, I have met about 5-6 parents of my son's classmates and form a buddy-support system for homework etc ...
2) Bring along a GOOD PEN (CRITICAL), you will have forms to fill, photocopy of your child's immunisation (if you forget, can do it later) schedule and school fees & insurance fees to pay - suggest you bring some small change as well, teacher will go "gogo" with all RM50 and RM100 notes ... :p
3) Some classes will be given their class timetable or have it posted on the wall outside/inside ... so you may want to bring some blank paper/notepad to copy down.
4) School textbook (no need - skim pinjaman for all) - exercise books and workbooks, well, there will be one hell of a queue, so be prepared !!!
That is all that I can remember for now - any more that comes to memory, I will post again :) Getting old, cannot remember so much liow !!!
Is your child going to attend the pre-orientation classes organised by the PIBG? If yes, then that will be very good, as they will be meeting with some friends earlier and some of the teachers. You can also buy the school books during the pre-orientation classes.
NOTE : This is the one opportunity for parents to get to know each other - so be friendly and start exchanging hp nos !!!!! :) :)

;) ;) Always be prepared !! Anyway, I have to admit that I cannot help being a bit "kan cheong" as I have heard a lot of stories from my relatives about how Lick Hung is a "tough" and "pressure cooker" SJKC when I told them that my son has been enrolled there. Their news and stories don't exactly inspire a lot of comfort for the parents especially the first timers.
Hence, I am very happy to find this thread and usj.com.my website and after having read through most of the posts here, I have to say that it is not that bad, just need a bit of understanding of its nuances as you have put it at the start.
BTW, I am also recommending this forum to a few parents of my son's friends who are also starting Std 1 next year.
Also thank you for the information on the Orientation - I did not know that there are so much "activities" for the parents to do. Like that I will be taking leave on that day to attend school. :) I will also be bringing a GOOD PEN !! :p

Thanks a lot for the useful information CurryMee. I will take note of it! :D
Another thing need to ask you. I'm looking for a daycare for my girl plus my baby (now 11 mths) next year and I do not wish to have the daycare at SS19. You know anyone around USJ11 or USJ12 who can baby sit my 2 kids?

No worries mate .... as long as both you and your wife are on the same page with regard to school matters, homework, exams etc ... all will be well. "Trouble" starts when one parent has a different opinion on education compared to the other, then the child will take the easy way out. I have seen that scenario many times. As long as both parents stress the importance and the same message to the kid, they will do well.

Firstly, let me clarify that it does not happen in every case. The few situations that I have seen and heard displayed the same symptoms and root causes. It can happen when both parents do not share similar views on the kids education - i.e. what I term "on the same page and same message".
If one parent (usually the SK-educated one) takes a "softer / relaxed" approach towards the SJKC style of teaching, discipline and homework, (i.e. keeps saying in front of the kids to the spouse - crazy school, stupid system, so much homework, this is crazy, I don't do so much when I am in SK, take it easy, don't worry about exams etc ... ) then when the other spouse tries to "enforce" some discipline in order to complete the school homework, study etc ... then the child will start to whinge and complain and then refer back to the more "relaxed" parent and manja-manja (esp girls to their SK fathers) - kids are smart at doing this !! :p
So, when that happens, the necessary DISCIPLINE to do well in SJKC like Lick Hung will break down and will be difficult to enforce. My experience has shown that it really takes DISCIPLINE for a child to diligently complete, do well and pay attention to the school homework. If they manage to do well and properly, half the battle is won !! Regular and constant work is the recipe for doing well at SJKC and not the burning the last-minute candle ...
Parents may have to sacrifice like NO TV for everyone while he/she studies to help enforce that "discipline" and "understanding" to the child - imagine how easy it is to be distracted for a child esp with the TV around. (The good part is I ended up READING A LOT as a result also :) )
And for the child starting Std 1, it will be a REAL WORLD SHOCK for the first few weeks when they get homework daily and have to study ... so you can imagine the scenario if one parent keeps saying the "negatives" about school and homework and contradicts the other parent trying to enforce the necessary discipline ....
Hence, my advice for both parents to share and have the same message for the child from as early as possible. Yes, it is not nice to see the kids grumbling, complaining, crying and sometimes when you see your spouse "screaming" at the child (it happens !!) to pay attention, write nicely, be less careless, pay more attention .... etc etc .... but it is important that kids know that the parents are emphasisng the same message - BE DISCIPLINE and DO YOUR WORK PROPERLY.
I am not advocating "child abuse" or mental torture here ;) (although to many SK kids, I sound like one !! :p ) - I am just highlighting that both parents need to agree and support each other in introducing and enforcing DISCIPLINE to school work - this is the case for majority of SJKCs.

SJKC Lick Hung School Carnival was reported in the Star Metro section -
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2010/10/22/central/7256587&sec=central
Anyway, it was a good day out for my family :) Hopefully, the HM and PIBG will remind the MCA politicians that Lick Hung needs RM5million for the new school block. The token RM5,000 from PM department is a good start but NOT ENOUGH!! :p :p

My kid's muscle difficult to build up lar....that's why I am worry :(
I fully agreed with Totoro....which is my concern too.
on basis that std 2 needs to climb staircase, will you choose
a. a trolley bag - and let it koyak resulting from the dragging up/down by your kid on a daily basis, and endure & be prepared to change his/her school bag every 2 monthly; OR
b. a big backpack - just let them get use to carrying such big bags...
c. a decently sized school bag together with another small bag - better to carry more bags than to break their bones.
fRaNkY
22-10-2010, 07:52 PM
One way to reduce the weight is to buy a good bag that absorb the weight like our notebook backpack or expensive camera bag
Another is to distribute the load. The exercise book in another cloth bag or heavy duty recycle bag.
Make sure the water bottle is with a soft strap.
Another is to do spot check on the contents. Kids like to bring unneccessary stuffs and stationery, ie diff colour pencils, pens and stuff .

If you all really want to lightrn the weight of the school bag is to ask the school to ONLY use one exercise book per subject. If the ex.book is completed then the next one is use...Normally school has many ex books for one subject which contribute to the weight . :o

Speaking of computers, a few parents and I were shocked to find out (during the Carnival) that the school computer labs are still using old CRT monitors (which is fine) and the distance is too uncomfortably close (not so good for the eyes). One of the parents said he will raise it as an issue during the next PIBG.

I think it is a good idea to sent the kids to the PIBG classes, assuming that the PIBG-classes have not closed or filled up. Personally, I found it to be very helpful as it gave me the chance to ease my son into the school system and get all the sobs/grumbles/complains over with before school proper starts :p :p and if I am not mistaken, it is only for half a day (morning) for 2 weeks - that was last year's classes, not sure about this year.

Obviously, you have no idea of Chinese school – the dilapidated conditions of Chinese vernacular schools which have to survive on Chinese community’s support.
Lick Hung can be considered among the best in terms of hardware/facilities for Chinese vernacular schools.
Many (In fact, I should say almost all) of the Chinese vernacular schools now are the results of hard work, dedication and financial scarifies from the previous good Samaritans of Chinese community.
I am not shocked to hear you are shocked with CRT monitors…I am sad that the masses in Chinese society never know and understand the struggle and fight of Chinese schools. Chinese vernacular schools are the best outside Taiwan and PRC in terms of organization and agility, after gone through the financial limitations and policy biasness for the past 50 years

Sagamihara,
Firstly, you are right in saying that I am not that well-versed with the struggles of SJKCs in Malaysia. :o In time, I hope to be better "educated" on the subject matter.
However, I am always reminded whenver there is a fund-raising and donation drive by any SJKC of the UNFAIRNESS of the BN Govt and the USELESSNESS of the parties representing the Chinese community and interest  Anyway, since this is a school thread, best not to discuss about the national politics and education policies here before Currymee starts to grumble about hijacking !! ;)
My friends and I actually went to the Lick Hung carnival even though we are not yet parents of children studying at the school yet (next year onwards) as a show of support. In addition, we also want the kids to have a"feel" for their new school and a chance to walkabout. Seeing the computer labs was a revelation of sorts to us and I also heard plenty of stories about the toilets with a number of parents checking out the facilities ... hahaha :p :D

School toilets - a never-ending story that I have heard from the first day I became a teacher back in the 70s UNTIL TODAY  ... makes you wonder if the country ever progresses ... if they cannot even take care of toilets.
The Lick Hung toilets are much better and cleaner than the ones found in most other schools, with the exception of those Putrajaya model smart schools. Still, I don't think any of the parents here will sent their kids to a school on the basis of toilets, right ? :D

My grandson showed me his latest Std 1 English test paper where he got a "B" (70+), so he was disappointed as he usually gets an "A" (90+). At first glance, I was surprised to note the level and standard of English being tested, it is almost like Std 3 especially for the rearranging the words section, which he got ALL wrong  . I asked my grandson if everyone in his class also did as badly. He said a couple of children got 90+ but majority in 70s or lower 80s.
I told him the only way he can improve on those types of questions is TO READ A LOT. Still, I must admit that I am surprised at the level of difficulty of the English paper.

cikgu fong, my girl's marks in English has deteriorated this time too, and yup, she made a lot of mistakes in the re-arranging the words section. Initially i thought she was not careful enough but further read, I also think that the std is much higher this time.
The thing is, my girl is quite a reader and she spends most of her weekend reading...I realise maybe she hasn't done enough writing exercises, & that's why input and no output = less efficiency.
So now i make sure she reads & does writing exercise on weekend.

I am puzzled as to why the school sets its exams to be so tough and difficult beyond the normal syallabus level ? What is the school management trying to prove or do ? I understand that one of the objectives of exams is to test the students' current level of understanding and comprehension but if the exam questions go beyond what is taught daily, is that fair ?

Well, your question is not exactly that easy also - very TOUGH to answer !! :p I was once told by Simon Ngoo (the ex-parent-volunteer-traffic warden) that the school prides itself in being tough in its exams in an effort to "stretch" the children to their limits, and for them to know their strengths and weaknesses, and henceforth, take remedial action (study harder ;) ) so that when it comes to the actual UPSR exams, Lick Hung students that usually get "B" will easily obtain an "A" and those in the "A" category are GUARANTEED an "A" assuming if things go according to plan.
He mentioned that I should expect the grading for Lick Hung to be at least one grade higher than UPSR standard/requirement especially for Mathematics and Science.
Is that right or wrong? Healthy or unhealthy? Pressure or unnecessary stress ? Well, IMHO, the answer to that lies with the individual parents and their respective expectations and point of view on education. Personally, I told my son, for every exam, please target to get 85% + per subject and overall average - that is what the school expects (this was mentioned during Std 1 Orientation in passing as average). He may end up last in his class but if he fulfills the above criteria, I am satisfied :)

I understand that one of the objectives of exams is to test the students' current level of understanding and comprehension but if the exam questions go beyond what is taught daily, is that fair ?
From an ex-teacher point of view, the examinations are usually set to achieve 3 objectives:
1) Identify the students that are below the passing marks (bottom 10%) hence they need remedial actions such as tutorials
2) Identify the potential high achievers (top 10%)
3) Ensure that the majority of students (80%) understand and comprehend what has been taught in the syallabus.
Therefore, most exam questions are set in a manner where 50% of the marks are literally "free" (assuming the children pay attention in class and do their homework), 40% of varying difficulties to stretch the children's understanding and comprehension and the last 10% to really test the smart ones.
As a result, for a student to get an "A" (using the old rating system), you have to score 90+ with the bulk getting B and Cs which is normal. I noticed that Lick Hung uses 80+ for "A", which I guess is consistent with the current Kementerian system, although personally, I think it is better to use the old scoring system as it is clearer and more precise. A 20% range for an "A" is huge and there is a significant difference in the ability of a student scoring 90+ and say 80 or 81%.
Why is the Lick Hung exams so tough? Currymee has given a good explanation, so I shall not repeat what has been said. It is up to the indvidual school to set its standards within the range set by Kementerian, and obviously Lick Hung has chosen to take the higher end of the range.
What is more important is whether can the school teachers raise the students' abilities through their class lessons to match their "tough" exams? To me, it will be UNFAIR, if the children are examined in say GRAMMAR but they are never taught the proper way or to use vocabulary beyond their current level. In this aspect, I think Lick Hung is guilty on a few occasion

I had posted in this thread before that LH standard is high – the Std one Mandarin is closed to the Std three in Singapore, and the Math is tougher than the elementary three in Taiwan. I got the feedback after showing the Chinese and Math books to my friends and relatives from Taiwan and Singapore.
I can accept Mandarin, BM and Math exam in LH are tough and beyond the average Std one level because the time (the total hours spend for these subjects in school) and the resources (the number of text books, exercise books for these subjects) in LH is definitely one of the highest among all primary schools.
For English, there is only one class per week and only two books. I agreed with Fong that the school/English teacher who prepared the English exam paper is “guilty” and I am puzzled what is the intention or educational benefits for setting the English exam much tougher which do not reflect the attention/resources for this subject. You should not and is unfair to ask a student to answer questions with depth which they never exposed to.

Dear Cikgu Fong and Sagamihara,
I think the words UNFAIR and GUILTY is a bit too strong to use. Don't get me wrong, the recent English paper for Std 1 is "tough" alright :(. My own son's performance dropped from a solid "A" to almost a "C"
However, I think the English teacher did fulfilled what Cikgu Fong mentioned about the objectives of exams and I repasted the key section of his quote below:
As a result, for a student to get an "A" (using the old rating system), you have to score 90+ with the bulk getting B and Cs which is normal....
Giving the teacher the benefit of the doubt, I think the English paper really STRETCHED the kids and achieved the objectives as mentioned by Cikgu Fong (see above) where the top 10% (or maybe top 5%) were clearly identified !!! I noticed that in each class, there is only 1-3 students that have managed to get an "A" with 90+ % with the bulk of the class in the 70s and 80s.
Lick Hung exams are TOUGH and and as parents, we have to acknowledge the hard facts that maybe our kids are not as good in some areas like we hope they are. As I have mentioned, it is all down to our expectations as parents.

I had a good look at the English situation earlier in the year when my son almost flunked the March paper. I noticed that the teachers in Lick Hung are adhered and followed the Kementerian syallabus emphasising COMMUNICATION ENGLISH and not Grammar or sentence structure.
BUT as we all know, when it comes to testing in English, the only things you can test at Primary level is GRAMMAR and COMPREHENSION. So, there is an inherent mismatch between what is being taught and tested from the word go. IMHO, the fault lies with the Kementerian for having a screwed-up syallabus. This would not have happened during our time in the 1970s, where English is taught properly from the GRAMMAR LEVEL UPWARDS !!
My solution after my initial post-mortem in March was to teach my son English Grammar (the old fashion way) on my own, irrespective of whatever is happening in school - no choice :(

Interesting discussion.... kids with all those energy... can take some extra work.. dont worry... and now is the time to expose them to all kind of things... at least they will be well rounded.... not just down there... :D
Son was prepared.... with all those revision books I bought for him (from popular) and the previous year exam paper from sister.
Some says... let them enjoy and as long as they pass.. its ok.... but if the momentum is not there then how to catch up?

Cikgu Fong, Sagamihara, Currymee and Jan Tomaswaki,
Thank you for your opinions, insights and explanations on the Lick Hung school examinations. It is really an eye-opener to note how much you all are aware of the school matters, syllabuses and subjects.

Hi, I am new in this forum. I hope someone is kind enough to answer some of my questions for Lick Hung School. My daughther is turning 5 next year and i am planning to register her in Lick Hung School for primary one in 2013. I am very doubtful of this school as i have heard many horrible and terrifiying stories about the teachers in Lick Hung. I was told that the teachers there are very strict and normally will canned the students if they forgot to bring their homework or don't know how to answer a question. I need feedback from the mothers, especially their children studying in stardard one this year. How are the teachers in standard one? Do your kids enjoy going to Lick Hung? I called the school and enquire about some information and the office personnel in Lick Hung was so rude. They are not polite at all. I just wonder whether that person who answered my call was a teacher, if yes, i realy need to think twice whether to send my daughter to that school. I know that Lick Hung is a very famous and good school but what is the point of sending your children there if the teachers do not even know how to show a good example.

Congratulations !! :D Asked my son and he said the teacher said he does not qualify even though he was "democratically elected" by his classmates coz he has been too naughty and talkative for the year, caned too many times (does not hurt apparently), punished left, right and centre BUT he still loves her !!! :p :p :)
Note: "democratically elected" - apparently (TBC) the teacher ask the class who they think is best to do the job and he was "nominated" by the GIRLS in the class hahahaha .... WALAU !!!!! :D

Your dotter must be very good result in exam. :) I heard that only the children with good result will be chosen for Prefect & other duties.
If be a prefect or Liberian, do they need to go school earlier? Everyday on duty or rotate? What is the duration of duty?
Rachel, I know that you are a working mother, how are you arranged the transportation if your dotter being a Prefect and need to go school earlier?

Hi Jooai75,
To answer your concerns: (feedbacks from a father, so hope that is ok with you) :D
1) Horrible and terrifying stories - ALL TRUE IF your child is naughty and problematic coz the school will discipline him/her. they do not pamper the kids.
2) Very strict and normally will caned - STRICT - yes, imagine trying to control 50 hyper-active kids and the LIGHTSABRE does work ... as far as I know, more as a show ... but my son has got his fair share ... work wonders on his discipline. Note: Teachers don't cane girls ONLY boys !! Girls get light-taps and scolding but enough for them to be bawling their heads off ... (according to my son)
As for caning for homework and how to answer a question - as far as I am aware, does not happen at Std 1 BUT parents will be NOTIFIED through the "jia ker pu" (homework book) that the child has not hand-in or done his/her homework, so onus on parents to be responsible. I think the stories you heard are the more chronic cases.
3) How are the teachers in Std 1 ? Do the kids enjoy going to Lick Hung ? - My son loves his teacher to bits (probably suffering from Stockholm Syndrome !! :p :D ) and enjoys going to school to play with all his friends. The part he hates the most is HOMEWORK - then again, show me one who does love it .... ;) IMHO, the Lick Hung Std 1 teachers are pretty good and dedicated, I have no complains per say and are supportive of their efforts.
4) Calling the school office - which Govt department is ever polite ? :D
These are my point of views - maybe and perhaps other parents may have different experiences :)

Jooai75,
It is a good school and a good place to mould your child into a responsible person for the future - you will not regret it :) :)
I also heard all those stuff before entering the school but after having gone through it for Std 1, I am glad I sent my son to Lick Hung. :)
One of the main reason why I started this thread/mini-forum was to help address my own uncertainties about the school back in January. Now, in November and having gone through so much, I can assure you that the teachers esp at Std 1 know what they are doing and what is best to quickly help the kids adapt and adjust to SJKC life.
Major point to note: NO PAMPERING - DISCIPLINE is the key watchword of ALL SJKCs. :)

Thanks currymee, but seriously I think she's also not "qualified" as she's too passive & quiet hence doesnt demonstrate enough leadership qualities to be a prefect. I'm sure all parents would agree with me that good student shouldnt be measured just based on academic results but other qualities as well.
Am not sure how much this role will impact her study next year but will see how.

Thanks Totoro2010. She did well overall this year but not sure she could maintain such grades when she is in std 2 onwards. hard to say, since Lick Hung std is very very high.
oh, I am not sure how early she needs to go to school yet but will arrange her aunty transportor to send her early if that's necessary.

Rachel,
Have faith in your daughter - she will do well :) The responsibilities as a prefect is an honour and recognition from the teacher and school - you should be very proud :) Encourage her !!

I can see that prefect will have to wear yellow uniform.... so, u will have to buy new set of uniform for her next year.
