Meaning that would be compulsory? There goes my weekend ... :o

No-lah, these are just activities like Taekwando, ping-pong, scouts, etc etc .... just wait and see - I am interested to enroll my son for taekwando, but depends on him .....

Also in Moral paper (I think) .. there was a picture of a boy jumping but the picture is really not that clear... To me, all the option is correct since you can't really tell much from the picture.

I noticed that question in Moral paper too...

I heard from some parents that the result of 1st term test will not be recorded into students' report cards & also, not be taken into account when school average the annual tests (4 term tests) taken by students at year end? is that true ? (so instead of total marks dvd 4, it's total marks dvd 3??)

Huh? That is news to me - maybe some other better informed parents can shed some light on this. From what i know and heard from some veteran parents, everything counts - perhaps, a parent/forumer here that knows the teacher well can ask on our behalf?

I got the news from a Lick Hung parent whose kids are there in Std 2 & 4.

Yep, we need helps from fellow forumers with older kids in Lick HUng to clarify this...

Most importantly, IMHO is that we take heed of the strengths and weaknesses of our kids' current level of study and comprehension and improve on areas that are weak and strengthen the good ones. Whether the March exam marks are counted or not, I guess it is too late to do anything about them, time to move on to the next one in April/May.

So, TIME for this daddy to be busy teaching his son to READ !! :o

PS: I never thought I will be saying this in my lifetime, but for the first time, I am actually THANKFUL for an examination that has revealed so much to me - I am really thankful that it happens NOW and NOT LATER :o

That's the purpose of examination / test! :D Just like annual appraisal by your boss, to feedback how you perform and where you can improve further.

After having read my posts, a few forummers PM me asking me if I am disappointed with my son's recent exam results and did I reprimand him severely for it?

Well, as parents, it is natural that we all have high hopes and certain level of expectations and belief in our children's abilities and capabilities. That my son has not reached the level of my expectation - it is natural for me to feel disappointed, so let's not pretend otherwise or try to be a hero about it :(

Did I scold him etc etc ? The answer is NO but I did highlight to him that the tests have shown that he needs to improve on certain areas of his education i.e. reading, eradicating unnecessary carelessness, answering questions etc ... How did he respond? Well, he knows that I am firm and that I do care about his studies. I told him that I will be helping him to improve on these areas but he needs to also apply himself to the tasks seriously and earnestly. He is ok with that and I told him that while he studies hard, he will also get to enjoy his TV, toys, games, comics etc .... he will still have his all important growing up childhood :)

So, it is very much a BALANCING ACT that I will have to do and juggle to help him .... so, forumers, I thank you for your concerns and don't worry, I am not the tyrannical father type ..... :) I will only beat the sh*t out of him if he does drugs, involved in gangsterism, get someone's daughter pregnant  (before marriage), steal, cheat and lies .....

Even if you have filled in the RSVP form saying you will not come, if you have a change of heart, PLEASE COME TO PIBG this Sunday, if we as parents don't support the school or take an interest in its running and management, and the PIBG meeting is our only once-a-year direct open public forum, do you think ANYBODY else will care ......... ? :o

Went to the meeting and came out blur-blur ..... all in Mandarin - a few parents actually asked some good questions including one parent on teaching science and mathematics in English. The HM gave a reasonable answer saying that the school's emphasis and focus will be more on Chinese and they actively encourage the students to do so in Chinese. HM also explained that the key point is the knowledge for both these subjects not the language per say.

The PIBG was reelected and there wasn't exactly an election. Just sat through and watch the whole PIBG meeting proceedings and spending half the time trying to figure out what they are saying. :o

Meeting went on until past lunch, but I was so blur that I went home and forgot my currymee lunch hiya !!!! :o :o Never mind tomorrow, make up with a LARGE BOWL !!!!

On the serious side, I noticed that there are not that many parents attending, I estimate to be less than 3% around 50 at most while the teachers are around 70-80% (and they also double up as parents since most got kids in LH as well) - this is very SAD to see .... BTW, most of the ladies are also teachers :)

Wifey asked me if I would still go in the future given this first time experience, although I said yes, but seriously, I am disappointed at the lack of parent participation, I even saw a few busy reading newspapers, playing handphone games and gossiping ..... as a first time observer, I must say that I am actually happy to see a few parents asking some questions ... kudos to them. I enjoy those two parents in the front querying about the accounts, the PIBG committee faces went pucat hahahhaa :D ....... when they said showed the details on a few items - nearly burst out laughing !!

Personally, I don't have any objection if the PIBG committee is re-elected if they are functioning and from what I was told when I got back from toilet break by another parent, he said there were no other parents that were interested or volunteered at all in contesting for any posts, so the committee re-elected themselves. I asked him, can volunteer meh?  He said yes, the Chairman said so (in Mandarin, of course) :p :p I told the guy that I thought you need a proposer and a seconder, he said not really since the interest level is so low ....

Wifey asked me if I plan to join and volunteer for PIBG next year. I said I will not as I prefer to play an INDEPENDENT role and it is too MCA for me - heard a few mentions and praises for Lee Hwa Beng, Fong Chan Onn .... I presume for their contributions in the past - well, thank you gentlemen, but please keep politics away from the school - I will thank you for that :) .

One thing I am a bit curious when one of the parent raised that why the school is charged RM500 for the use of MPSJ field and the HM replied that they can't do anything and ask the parent to write to YB Hannah Yeoh on resident capacity? Isn't this the responsibility of the PIBG to write to appeal? What has the resident got to do woh...

Talking about the 2 parents who questioned about the accounts - nothing they could do also - the details aren't informative enough. For example, they didn't mention the breakdown for the renovation work done and also for the food & beverages of RM9K plus! Isn't the notes to the account supposed to be given together with the accounts so that people can understand the figures better before hand? When I get the accounts, I was stunt to see so many nota but couldn't find any notes to it. :o

Since now Lik Hung has many non-chinese students on top of those parents not of chinese edu. Isn't it the time to change the official language to International language? I don't think so. Next year we can request for it to be conducted in English IF they want ALL the parents to actively participate .... :D But looking at what transpired yesterday, looks like a "private" club members only committee ..... :( I mean it looks so funny to me for them to praise each other, give each other momentoes (dunno how much they cost and definitely money wasted), pat each other on the back and then afterwards re-elect each other :p :p :p

If they can do the job well, fine, I will support them, and as this is my first year, I will wait and see but I still think they should stop the momento giving business, looks so ridiculous, almost MCA/BN like .... meaningless and wasteful hadiah here and there .....

... Isnt it high time, non speaking parents "Chiang Hua Yi" ? ....

We all know that is why some of us do try our best with our half-past-six Mandarin :D - but for the non-Chinese parents, a lot of blank faces and to a certain degree, disappointment. That is why I mentioned in earlier post IF the PIBG wants ALL parents to partake then it may consider at the very least bilingual for some key aspects .... at least the HM answered all those who asked in English back in English. That is just my 2 cents.

Not phantom voters... no voting at all. The old committee members re-elect themselves.. Once the name was propose, very fast, there was seconder. Immediately someone propose to close the candidate proposal and was very quickly seconded. So, where got chance for the parents to cast the votes? :o

As I have mentioned in an earlier post, I saw one of the parents that I knew having a chit-chat with some members of the PIBG after the meeting, so I "bribed" him with an ALL POWERFUL BOWL OF CURRYMEE from Choy Kee :p asked him got anything "extras" for us, parents. Well, he mentioned (I think after this post, he will be "banned" from Lick Hung, hahahaha .... :p , although I believe what he said are old news but just not mentioned during PIBG meeting - or mentioned in Mandarin but blur-sotongs like me, don't understand !! )

1) Teaching of Science and Maths in English (he is really into this one) - he highlighted to me that the school emphasised more of teaching both subjects in Chinese, so he said better pay attention or later, the disparity in depth and coverage will show up ....

2) New school block - get ready for fund-raising and donations, starting in April/May, gonna cost a few millions but no exact figures - apparently, this is also an old news.

3) Annual complain of toilet issue - he got the impression that this is a big joke and was not taken seriously by PIBG  So, maybe have to raise this issue again and this time insist on ACTION PLAN and reporting back to parents required in the future.

4) No streaming of students although it seems parents were always confused and worried about this one esp Std 1 every year. It seems the wrong perception came about after they tried the diagnostic test in the previous year entry 2009 Std 1 (scrapped). He mentioned that HM gave his reasonings for not having streaming BUT may shift some students about esp those with discipline problems .... I looked at the parent and asked - Std 1, already got gangsters in school meh?? ;)

5) He asked about the "Kluster Cermerlang" status - and apparently LH was given due to its selected focus and niche in traditional CHinese cultural music and dances - nothing to do with academic prowess etc .... He said like that there is no big deal leh ..... and no wonder, there was so much time "wasted" talking about them during the speeches. (this guy, 110% academic focused parent and don't believe in the extra-curriculum stuff)

The PIBG also hinted for him to consider joining PIBG in the future. Hhahaha .... I told him, maybe that is their strategy to shut him up and not to ask anymore akward questions during meeting esp on the PIBG ACCOUNTS ... he was stunned when I mentioned that :D Then we joked about the NOTAs .... and lack of transparency .... and all the "cultural" trips/relationships.

BTW, after finishing the currymee, he mentioned that he also had currymee with the PIBG but with siew yuk instead of chicken - he prefered siew yuk ..... hiya ....  (no taste one !!) :p OR IS HE HINTING I SHOULD BUY HIM ANOTHER BOWL ????????????? I just act blur !!

I told him, if he really feels he can contribute positively in the PIBG next year, I will support him, I also told him that I may post some of what we talked about on this forum, he said go ahead .... so here it is :)

What I understand from one of the parents who has kids studying in LH is that the 1st term result and 2nd term results will be average out while the 3rd and 4th term results will be average out. Finally, these 2 half years average result will be average out to determine the final position.

So, if ur kids not doing well in the 1st term - it's not the end of the world for him/her. Do give them more encouragement and suport in their studies. That's one of the main responsibilities as parents, in my opinion. ;)

Correct and I agree - actually my main concerns for Std 1 are their adjustments to a new way of life (school) and the discipline of homework, studying and responsibility for their school activities. I still see a number of children crying at the school gate every now and then :( . When I found out that there is no streaming for Std 1 going to Std 2 next year, I was glad that the kids don't have to go through the whole "traumatic" cycle of making new friends and classmates all over again.

For some kids it is easy to make new friends, for others who are a bit shy, like mine, it took him almost 2 months to settle down and start calling a few of his classmates his friends, prior to that, he just grumbled saying school is no fun coz he has no friends and he doesn't know anybody .... I am one of those parents who send their kids 30 minutes early and fetch them back 30 minutes later, so he has a chance to play in school  :D - that to me is important, so they don't feel that the school is a "torture" chamber ..... there is FUN there after all. :p (I know that it is next to impossible to re-create the play and fun environment of a SK school in an SJKC but give them some play space/time) - but remember, if they are good in their studies and go all the way to university and beyond, there is another 20+ years to go .....

As for the school exams, as I have said before, I take that as good pointers to help me identify where he is strong or weak in his study skills and allows me to take the necessary remedial steps to strengthen his weaknesses. :)

I don't think parents need to come and collect the report book for the 1st exam. The teacher will just distribute it to the students and bring home for parents' signatures. Last year, the parent only came one time to collect it for the mid term exam.

Hello Busy Mom, welcome on board to USJ forum. This thread will update developments and issues related to Lick Hung. Do constantly check out for updates. During the recent PIBG, the HM did inform that a full day school session would probably be introduced in 2012. So, your kid probably will be the 1st batch to undergo this full day scheme.

Hi birdy...thanks for the heads-up. Me & hubs will now know roughly wats the directions of the school in coming years.

Meaning to say, there will only be one single session if there is to be a full day school session? No more segregation between morning & afternoon session...hmmm, i wonder this will tire the kids..

Busy Mom,

Welcome to the SJKC Lick Hung Parents Support thread :) . Single-session school will be very good for the school and the pupils as it will enable them to coordinate all activities and studies etc as a whole school simultaneously.

It is hoped that with single-session schools, there will be less stresses on Sat and Sun for activities as all can be conducted in the afternoon on weekdays - at least that was the idea and plan of the Govt when they first mooted the concept.

Please take note that for Lick Hung to go single-session by 2012, a new school building will have to be built, so don't be surprised if prospective students/parents will be asked together with the existing ones like us to help in the fund-raising ;)

BTW, afternoon classes are more tiring due to the weather, I know of kids including my own falling asleep during lessons. Some of the teachers like my son's just let them catch those short cat naps

What I trying to alert is... kids need some help... give it... else if they cannot catch up... they will feel bored.... and will loose interest... not unless u have plans to switch them half way to public school... Never know u might have a bright kid... but just need a little push... the potential out... :D

Yes I agree with franky.

I believe there're a lot of potential in a person and one needs a bit of push factors to demonstrate his/her full abilities...same applies to kids, just push them a little & see how they respond - the result might be out of your expectation! or, if they respond negatively, just stop pushing any further...keep trying until both of you reach an equilabrium.

as parents, letting the kids play all days or do things unguidedly doesnt mean you are taking a "liberal approach" in educating your kids...children are too young to decide what's right & wrong & if you let them roam freely, no doubt they'll still learn but through the hard ways & by try & error.

Spend some time to talk about "Facts of life" with your kid alone, tell them the cause and effect as well.

Not just blind scolding and whipping.... they wont know why... some kids are more mature than others and during our time.

When they achieve something... learn to praise and reward them.

Metaphor is using story to convey your message. For example, if you want to tell your kid the importance of primary education as foundation, you can similarize with contructing a tall building. The piling is like primary school education, it helps you to build up a strong and solid building in the future. If the piling is not strong, the whole building will collapse in the future.

I take a slightly different approach. I set a target for my son. I told him, he should try and aim for 90% or more for each subject, and getting a 100% is a special bonus :D . And for each subject that he did not get to that target, I told him, ok, now, we sit and down and see where you have gone wrong and why. At all times, I told him that I will guide and assist him to achieve that target, but reminded him that he has to be diligent and try harder each time.

You will be SURPRISED at how well they will response to that coaching - it brings out the best of parenting and child-parent bonding, and you will be surprised how willing they are to forgo TV, games, toys etc and do exercises and corrections, and with you nearby without scolding hahahaha ....... of course, once they are done with the planned study work for the day, let them go and enjoy ;)

Set PERSONAL targets that are achievable ( I suggest at Std 1-3 or maybe even later, do set percentage targets rather than position in class/std - teach him/her to set and achieve their own goals and personal targets - then they will grow up to be INDEPENDENT rather than always measuring against someone else but not their own goals - kiasu  ) and then work at guiding him/her there - be patient, they will stumble every now and then, most important is that they get up and continue working towards it.

Different parents have different ways :) and that's how I am coaching my kids when it comes to education.

I remembered a colleague sharing with me that her kids currently attend a single session Chinese school. What shocked me is that the kids still have to start school at 7.30am in the morning instead of later at perhaps 9.30am. There are a lot of time wasted as not whole day in school is filled with activities. By the time she picks her kids up from school, they are so tired they had to nap in the car till reach home, and end up eating dinner late cos too tired. I think single session schools should have the time re-adjusted so it would tire the children out.

I strongly support SINGLE-SESSION schools as the weather in Malaysia is now way too HOT and HUMID for afternoon classes. I see kids falling asleep in afternoon classes including my own. The early morning start is good as it is cooling when they start studying. As for the kids tiring out, need to ask them whether they have been playing and running around after classes - that usually exhausted all adults as well never mind all kids esp in the afternoon heat !! :)

I believe the school starts at 7.30am is to accommodate the parents to drop their kids at school before going off to work. By starting later, it may pose a problem to parents since flexi working hours is not a norm in this country.

What time usually does a single session school ends? There's pros & cons in having single session i'd say but hopefully LH will take into consideration from all aspects before they implement this.

If I am not mistaken, all schools that were given the "Sek Kecermerlangan" status have to be SINGLE-SESSION within a stipulated time-frame, and eventually, ALL SCHOOLS will move towards the SINGLE-SESSION. It is the education policy, the question is WHEN.

Had a discussion with some parents about the coming Penulisan exams - and the senior ones said that the best way to prepare is TO MEMORISE ALL THE EXERCISES in BM and CHinese and then hopefully, kids can regurgitate word-for-word ......  What kind of education is that ??????? That is what the CHinese called (literal translation to English) - "study dead books" :(

Aiya ..... do I follow and force my son into the rote-learning system?

akiyoshi

Currymee, soon the kid will be asked to memorise a whole passage of easily 60 chars, then just write every single char down. Nope, no word coming out from the teacher's mouth, just plain memorizing. Mind-boggling !

Banana parents will not appreciate and instead condemn the Chinese school system for rote learning like I did. What a backward way ! But this seems to be THE effective method in learning Chinese. It is through familiarisation, not through logical thinking in initial learning. So, no choice.

My advice: stick to it. Don't confuse the kid. They actually cope quite easily.

Ya, another round of stress for the parents as the 2nd exam started on 26/4 :( The school has actually set 24/4 (Sat) as a school day for replacement of Hari Raya Holiday. I really don't like this arrangement as the kids are going to have the exam on Monday, yet they hv to come back to school on Sat for replacement class and still need to do home work. Can't the school fix other date instead? :( Anyone has insider information that the school decided to change the date of replacement class?

Ya, another round of stress for the parents as the 2nd exam started on 26/4 ...
Now my kids have gone on to secondary school, I can stand back and be amazed at how stressed we all were. In reality, do remember that our kids in primary school (especially LickHung and other vernacular school) are simply pre-teens and need to enjoy school rather than treat it as an examination bogey-man !!

My daughter simply loved school not because she was getting educated but because she had so many friends. Everyday was an adventure because she looks forward to meeting her friends and making new friends. That is a healthy attitude and as parents we should be aware of that. Of course, as parents we need to emphasise the importance of performance but I think it is only a secondary thing for primary schools ... wait till they go to secondary school ... now my hair-drop is on full acceleration and hopefully i don't get bald before they get into college or University ... aiyahhhh :( :D

Franky,

I only received 1 notice which pertains to PIBG dinner night. What's the second one for ?

That aside, daughter told me yesterday a girl fainted in the toilet & was rushed by teachers to the teaching staff room. She said she heard from friends that the girl was apparently coughing, having fever & other Influenza flu like symptoms

Really hope LH monitors closely on this.

There are also a number of parents that I have heard who are thinking along the same line of thought. I have discussed with my wife and her logic is better to attend school and class lessons, and forget about the exams - treat the exams as just another set of school exercises for us to gauge his performance to date. After all, if the kids don't do well in exams, they are not going to get expelled or face any disciplinary actions but skipping classes without valid reasons is another story.

Parents, take it easy. They are only in Std 1. Exams are a regular feature in Lick Hung. Apart from those in the schedule they also have "Small Exams". So just ride along. Let the kid have fun and just do whatever he can.

Still a long way to go ... usually the kids worry much less than the parents and yet they can deal with school pretty well, not under pressure. :)

birdy,

some time last week daughter wrote on her "homework book" to ask permission to go to MPSJ field sometimes in May/June ? (cant remember exact month now). I asked her to check if that's for sport day & teacher confirmed that.

so i guess yes, sport day is coming soon. I'll confirm the date when i get home today & take a look.

I think the main reason for parents who plan to ask their kids to rest at home on Saturday is related to health.

Continuous six days class is very tiring for primary school student. Tiredness will cause the kid more susceptible to illness.

Another reason is time.

Except for a few who are self-employed/freelancer, many of the parents only have time to go through the homework and do revision with the kids during weekend.

After six days of hectic school chores and still have to prepare for exam on Sunday, it is not a good way to sustain the kids interest in studies. They need time to play, rest and relax.

THe school needs to be more vigilant in planning the date for replacement class.

currymee,

I heard from my LH kaki that they were once told by some experienced tutors that it's common for LH to teach std 2 syllabus to LH students in std 1.

I notice the maths teacher is now teaching my daughter's class times table for no. 1 to 3, something that Sri Selangor teachers will only teach their students in std 2.

So, it's true that LH std is indeed higher as they push their way through....

If the children can learn fast, I think it is fine for the teacher to add some 'vroom' power to the teachings. After all, more time can be spend on doing revision come end of the year.

Dont quite get it...do you mean you thought that Lick Hung operates a secondary school in subang jaya ?

if you place your child in LH it doesn't mean you must send them to govt secondary school thereafter, you can opt for private chinses/english schools. It's totally up to the parents & the child.

What options are available in Subang Jaya for secondary after LH? Are there any private Chinese schools in Subang Jaya?

I have to agree with Birdy on that, less tiring if regular revision ... only we do it on the weekends, revise back the previous week's work - it will be tough to start with but if both of you set aside an hour or two each weekend, it will soon become a routine and then no problem - best if you can do it daily as if in a tuition centre ....

yes agree...during non-critical/exam time, i let her do homework & reference books outside of school syllabus on weekdays & total play time during weekends. This allows me time to relax, do house chores & attend to the lil sis who seeks my attention 24/7...

I thought Lick Hung is "too much" giving so much homework to the pupils, now looks like parents can be even worst!

In my opinion primary schools' results are really nothing to worry about as long as they are doing average. What is more important is the ability to read and write, and do math. I pity children who have been pressured by their parents with tuition and tuition after a long day in school. I guess that's partly why we now heard parents said, "No way I am going to send my children to SJKC to suffer!". Besides, I think too much of texts and studying might limit a child's creativity development.

It's not so much of achieving good results as far as I am concerned. In my view, if we didn't not build up the right attitude at young age (ie. giving too much laxing time), there is high chances that the children will not take exam seriously and unlikely be independent when they go to Secondary school too. For me, I only cultivate right mindset of the importance of examination. I don't pressure my kid to score 90 or 100% in the test. :)

My wife and I take a different approach to evaluation - as long as our son can demonstrated to us at home that he has mastered the necessary understanding and comprehension of the material he has been taught - we are satisfied with whatever outcome from the school exams. We have come to the conclusion that the SJKCs (not just Lick Hung) are TOO exam-oriented and NOT education oriented per say.

I remember relating to my wife a discussion I had with one of the parents and he made the most sense to me. He said why is it that Science should be given priority when by right Pendidkan Moral should have the higher emphasise and merit to be counted in examination averages? Reason: Isn't it more important to educate the next generation to be members of a civil society than just to be scientifically competent but morally bankrupt? He mentioned the lack of emphasis on Moral/Civics is a screw-up reflection of the education system whose values are towards those of materialism and not moral character - sigh :( He said he is happier if his daughter scores higher in Moral than Science even though Moral counted for nothing in the exams.

What is the score for A ? The report card says 80+, some teachers say 90+, some parents say 85+ .....
Don't bother what others said ... just follow what the report card says... I think it is 80+ coz my daughter got 82 for her chinese in the first test, it still showed 'A' in the report card.

I got my 4 yr old japed for H1N1 last week at Clinic Little one USJ9 for RM100. Heard another parents saying Clinic MediForm at USJ 2 only charges RM75. Asked the pad if my 7 yr old need that his answer was "not necessary" as they no longer belong to the high risk group.

Klinik Choo (SS15 - my "local" trusted GP - don't play-play with this doctor, can scold you one if he thinks you are making a fool of yourself !! :D ) charges RM75 per jab - vaccine is made by Novartis ... apparently, there are a few brands ...

No idea, to be honest, but as long as it is made by well known big phrama, should be safe in terms of QC, more concerned, if it is the cheap and generic vaccines esp if made in PRC. Sorry, if I sound biased, but when it comes to medicine, don't play-play. If they even dare to make tainted milk powder and kill babies, they can do anything in the name of money  !!!

Just so happened to listen to BFM 89.9 at 4pm today with Shazmin talking to 2 doctors, one from MoH, another from some preventive medicine dept on key questions about H1N1 vaccine. The gist as :

1) Types of Vaccines
Ans: Public hospitals give mono-vaccine meaning the one addressing the
pandemic virus; private gives tri-vaccine meaning in addition also includes the
common flu vaccines

2) Anyone who shouldn't be vaccinated :
Ans: Yes, those allergic to egg, or allergic to vaccines coz most vaccines
are cultured using egg

3) Dosage
Ans: Those below 9 yrs old need to get 2 dosage, within 4 weeks of each other, whereas 9 yrs and above just need 1 dosage

4) Fully immune after jab ?
Not 100%.

I believe www.bfm.my will be posting a recorded podcast on its site soon so you can still catch it.

So which brand is the good one?

The one I got for RM1 from government clinic, I feel a bit feverish and tired but a panadol counters it.

The ones my kids got from Klinik Liew have no after effect, just a bit pain on the hand got injected. Afternoon we went watch Ironman2 :D

Other clinic I am not sure. You could call that clinic what vaccine they use and see if u can get cheaper elsewhere.

Yeah, the vaccine made from egg...

kwchang
12-05-2010, 12:37 AM
Govt clinic vaccines are the single-virus types ... the shot is painless but some people develop a swelling for a few days at the injection site.

Private clinics are likely to give you the seasonal flu shot with the H1N1 strain added. This shot is usually painful at the site AFTER the injection but there is no swelling

By the way, vaccine production requires living cells for the virus to grow. Although cell-culture is available as a source of living cells for culturing viruses, some viruses such as the influenza viruses are only successfully grown in fertile eggs (http://www.microbelibrary.org/Virus/details.asp?id=2402&Lang=) which was an old method for culturing viruses

Finally, son got his class photo, books and some exam papers yseterday.

1) Photo - I am plesantly surprised that all his classmates look very cute in the photo and clean !!! Does not look anything like the boys and girls I see daily, full of sweat, hair all over the place, devillish cheeky and dirty shoes ... this photo all angelic and spotless !!!! :p My wifey keeps on asking my son who is this girl, who is that girl .... I asked her - "You are looking for your FUTURE daughter-in-law or what? " HAHAHAHAHAA ..... :D :D :D Me, I am more interested in all those "rascals" that he hangs out with ..... aiyo .... my son kena punished daily :o , so needs to know all his accomplices ....
(PS: Son says he is not going to marry at all, girls drive him nuts !! - hahaha .... like to hear him repeat that when he is 18+ years old ;) )

2) Books - errrr .... I think I over-bought, so I may be offering some Lick Hung exercise books for SALE by year-end at the Flea Market hahahaha ..... :D

3) Exams - wah .... dunno what to say ... overall a steadier performance within expectation. The mother is not happy with the CHinese Pefahaman - more with the school, she said crazy to set questions at that difficulty level and out-of-syallabus/scope proposed .... no comment, as I am "buta-huruf" on this one.

Yeah, the kids are cute... not like my time, messy hair, shirts untuck, different shades of uniforms, torn uniform and kids come in various shapes/size/height... here mostly "Prosperous" look :D

Yeah, some of the girls are indeed cute and we asked son who their neighbours are... who get no 1... 2... so on. Who got beaten by teacher... never do home work, always talk in class... was impressed son knows everyone's name  ...

Keep the exercise books lar, maybe next year can use or for the younger kids.... Now only std 1, so.... 6 more years b4 expiring :D Can also use for scrap book in std 3 & 4, cutting articles and chinese stuff. At home, we have various nos of exercise books for dotter and son.

My plan with hisour sweet and small teacup jelly for son spoilt when teacher says no junk food..... so daughter get all :D.... so maybe have to buy some cakes on thursday and cut into small2 size :D

With 80% as A... son should score easily... if maintain his work. However, my reward is 90%. Remember my time 95% is A :(

I notice that if wrong up to 5 questions, your point can drop to 80++

There is no whatsoever class party, is more that you bring your portion and share / exchange. I asked if any notice given, my dotter said just verbal. So, meaning this class party is up to the class teacher preference?

Kid came back to say that next Monday is the vaccination day in Lick Hung Std 1.
:D
Kids were informed that if they were absent on that day, then the parents would need to fork out RM100 to get the injection outside on their own.

Some parents were asking IF the vaccination is necessary? If I am not mistaken it is for DTP, BCG (if no scar), Polio and MMR boosters and at the age of 6-7 years old, it is ADVISABLE ( I prefer to say compulsary, but different parents have different way of thinking ;) ) to do so, since the last round of boosters will be around 1 years old, and would probably have worn off.

I am sure as parents, all of us have GOT the jabs when we were that age too :( - still remember I cried the whole day :o , so it is good for the kids, don't be too protective in the wrong direction, it is a preventative measure for the good of their health. Let them cry and make friends in school - crying bring the kids closer, semua suffer together, and nothing bonds them like "suffering" :D

I told my son he has to be a BRAVE boy and bring tissue papers to school to give to his "girl friends" if any of them cries ... kind of boost his bravery a bit to be hero !! :p :p (TIPS: Suggest you do like wise, tell your sons & dotters to bring some tissue for other friends that may cry, then they will feel "braver" - works all the time !! Tell them it is less painful to shout a loud OUCH when jabbed, the pain leaves through the "mouth" :D )

Errrr .... when it comes to cuts and bruises, best to advise the kids to go to the school office or inform the class teacher - the school has all the proper first-aid kits there and also for an adult to check just in case it needs further medical attention, in case the cuts are deep or got things embedded and the bleeding doesn't stop - the kids don't know too much about this yet at their tender age. ... can we bring the kids home after meeting with the teachers for the report card collection....Perhaps some "veterans" can help out... In the past (latest for me was 3 years ago) it is normal to ask the teacher for permission to take the kid home after the report card is taken. The teacher wouldn't have time to teach anyway since most of the day is spent in discussions with the parents. Do get to yr kid's class and queue up as the parents are seen to on a first-come-first-served basis. Sometimes the meeting with parents are done in the staff room (when the classrooms are shared) so check it out. Good to know the teacher's name in advance so you know who to look for if it is in the staff room

My son did not have his genitals checked, but he said the boy before him did.
According to him, out of the 3 incl him, only one was given a brief look. Yes, I agree that parents should be informed first.
There were 2 jabs given as opposed to 1 jab only in previous years. BCG ? MMR? Polio ?

MOH will list a place when they have a "cluster" ... ie when more than one person gets the infection - this indicates a risk of spread. Isolated cases are not so risky because there is no transmission.

By the way, why aren't people going for the FREE AH1N1 vaccinations at govt clinics? Heard on the news that the public isn't interested. I got mine done and I can tell you I am still well and alive with no known negative effects :D

I will go and check with my sources later in school ;) In the meantime, here is a good link to keep up to date, click on the "Lampiran 1" hyperlink in the letter to get the list of cases and location, to date Lick Hung is not mentioned yet.

Thanks currymee for the infos.

I have called the school and they confirm to me that there's no outbreak in LH so far but might have isolated cases from time to time. Things are so far under control.

I just got wind from some parents that there's a AH1N1 case in standard 3 Lick Hung detected. A parent called me to ask me not to send my girl to school today. Any forummer heard of that ?

You should be worried when school reopens.... rich families will be travelling overseas.... so get your kid vaccinated.

I have 2 kids.... I would have heard left and right.

Even my office building have AH1H1 watch.... everytime someone kena, I will get a holiday?

I am not questioning the effectiveness of the H1N1 vaccine.

This is a type of flu virus…and we know there are countless of flu viruses which can cause influenza-type symptoms.

I just not sure what happen when there is another new type(mutation) of virus, a new injection ???

Can someone help to explain ?

Thanks

Yup, the few mothers and fathers that I spoke to mention the same thing ... there have been some isolated cases for the last few months, but to date no major outbreak (cluster) in SJKC Lick Hung. It seems that whenever there is a case, the children/teacher would stay home and quarantine themselves until they are better.

Talk to your doctor. The shot contains COMMON flus... few strains

If mutate, then... good luck.

Report Card Collection - Thursday (27/05/2010)

Parents - please take note, time to go and see the teachers for the report card collection. Please refer to the kids notice book for details.

For Std 1 and 2 (Afternoon session):

Collection time: 1:30 to 5:30pm
Break/recess time: 3:30 - 4:00pm (break for teachers, so don't kacau I guess ;) )

Some of the parents that I know have gone and checked with their kids' class teachers and yes, can bring the kids home after report card collection.

Son told me to come around 4-5pm (after recess), he wants to play in school since teacher will be busy so presumably no lessons hahahaa .... little rascal (he and his gang had already planned to ask their parents to come around same time) !! I told him if he kena walloped and his teacher complained to me then how ..... ??? :p :p

Spoke to the doctor before, and the doctor is from the clinic that provide the H1N1 vaccine as posted by one of the forumers in this thread.

The feedback from the doctor – The vaccine is

1. Necessary for those immuno-comprised people i.e. those who are more susceptible to flu virus. The high risk group in this category are children and elderly folks who can fall sick easily.
2. Those who are working in, frequently travel and constantly stay in a crowded environment. These include people working in the airline, hospital and shopping mall.

The fact is
1.If you are healthy, you don’t need to take the vaccine as your body is strong enough to take care of the virus, and because there will always a new strain of viruses evolve to counter the vaccine.
2.If you are not healthy i.e. week in immunity, vaccine is needed. BUT, the key is still to enhance the body resistance by having sufficient rest, adequate nutrients and avoid crowded space.

That’s why I ask the questions in my previous post, I find it strange there are people who think the H1N1 vaccine is the solution/savior to the problem.
