I agree with Currymee, the govt thinks that parent has nothing to do, just sit there and wait for super short notice. Bear in mind that some company has policy that leave has to be applied at least 3 working days in advance. If the government is really sincere and worry the safety for the children to collect the money alone, then they should be more caring, issue cheque payable to the parent name or child name. I am sure most of the children would have his/her own bank account.

Agree, dont see anything wrong with giving the cheque to the children. School has full record of parent/guardian name. Just put any of the name will do. I am still thinking how to sneak an hour/2 out to get the monies. Dont take also stupid, take also stupid. Easily take 2 hours plus travelling and waiting. Why not give 2-3 days to collect the monies????

Firstly, you must understand that this is a TOP-DOWN POLITICAL DIRECTIVE and DECISION, so the schools have to do as they are told ... no thinking allowed !! If allowed, I bet you, Lick Hung will "re-channel" all the fund into the new school block development :p :p

In such a situation, UNIFORMITY in method of distribution, day, time etc is pre-determined by the Ministry. I am not sure IF the schools are given any leeway here, if they do, then Lick Hung school management is a BUNCH OF IDIOTS for cramming everything like this !!

Issuing of cheques will only work in urban schools like Lick Hung but not for rural schools. Hence, it is not done in any school nationwide as far as I am aware.

All these aspects, I can accept and understand, knowing how stupid, rigid and idiotic the Ministry of Education can be ....

BUT what I strongly disagree with is THE CRAZY SHORT NOTICE (as good as NO NOTICE) given until working parents cannot apply for leave and have to forfeit .... that is UNFAIR

It is akin to saying want to "give and help" BUT you make it so difficult with so many conditions until it is next to impossible for some .... and then you want those that cannot make it TO FORFEIT and TAKE IT BACK .... that is a very "INSINCERE" gift - in my book !!

It is called "BURUK SIKU" in BM Simpulan Bahasa ... :p - give and then try to TAKE BACK ....

What CERAMAH ?

I just walked in and all the class kids shouted "Hello Uncle !! :p " (no need to check my ID) and just went to the class teacher's desk, sign and took the envelope with RM100 inside.

The teacher even joked with me as I opened the envelope to check - "Don't worry, got money, I pack it myself !! :p :D - like she is giving "angpows" :D

AIYAH :o Birdy, thanks for the clarification ... so Mdm Ong is a YBhg - Yang Berbahagia - the honorific salutation in front of a Datukship etc .... My apologies to Madam Ong if she did not claim herself to be a YB but others confer "YB" to her in the process of trying to "curry favour" (or aka carry-balls  ) with her .

FYI - YB (Yang Berhormat) is exclusively reserved for ELECTED REPRESENTATIVE of the people ;) - sorry, you are not it !! SJ/USJ residents in majority did not elect you in 2008 ....

LATEST UPDATE by DG of MOE on REBATE

Must have been a lot of parents complaining leh ....

Extract ... "We are focusing on making the payment this week to enable parents to use the money to buy schooling paraphernalia. However, if they cannot go to the schools now, they can claim the money later," he told reporters after the 1Malaysia national-level special education co-curricular excellence awards presentation, here.

Abd Ghafar dismissed an allegation that the money would be returned to the Government if it was not claimed this week.

Errrr .... so what about the school letter (see below - item no. 4) ? Who is talking cock and bull ? :p :p :p

This is a logistical nightmare created by BN nightmare, not properly thought off.

I checked her profile (below) and Mdm Ong was the former PIBG Committee of Lick Hung (1995-1999) even before the current HM (2005) and since then, she has got no official connection whatsoever with the school.

http://www.chongswen.com/Profile/MyProfile.htm

..... BTW, WHAT ARE POLITICIANS DOING IN SCHOOL AGAIN ?

Yes, the school headmaster is guilty of breaking the Jabatan Pelajaran Negeri orders by inviting a politician to school to "officiate" an event. If enough parents complain to the Ministry, he can be reprimanded or transfered for breaking the General Orders (Perintah Am) of civil service.

Madam Ong has no official rights to be in any Lick Hung events (or any other SJKC in Subang area) as she is no longer a parent of a school going children, she is not a PIBG Committee member anymore nor is she a member of the Board of Governors. She is just a plain politician and has no right to attend whatsoever and in breach of Government rulings.

If any local politican is allowed to grace any funtion in the school, it should be ADUN Subang Jaya - Yang BERHORMAT Hannah Yeoh (DAP) or MP Kelana Jaya - Yang BERHORMAT Loh Gwo Bourne (PKR) - they are the real YBs representing the people of Kelana Jaya.

I feel sorry for Madam Ong to be put into such a shameful situation by over-zealous officials wanting to "curry favour" her (I checked in the online dictionary and there is actually such a term, I thought currymee was kidding ... ;) ) for their own selfish reasons.

This event has left a very bad taste in the mouth of many parents (voters) and even neutrals like myself are disgusted about the blatant abuse when I heard about it

What if this is directive from the Ministry? I don't think the headmaster has such influence since the ceremony combines 3 schools, Lick Hung, SK SS19 and another school (which I didn't pay attention, coz I have collected the money :p)

Eeerrrrr .... guys and gals .... let's CHILL OUT about POLITICIANS here .... I will start another thread on this in the main forum :)

It is already susah for me to wake up to reply to a few PMs and emails telling me that I should not "blast" MCA politicians in a school forum so openly and in public domain, afterwards, SJKC Lick Hung will not GET ANY MORE GOVT/MCA FUNDING assistance .... then we all will be suffering. I have a different point of view on this but I shall leave it to another thread .... http://www.usj.com.my/bulletin/upload/showthread.php?p=525545#post525545

So I don't want to risk having the school forum closed as a result of an over-zealous "ball-carrying" HM and a "wanna-be" politician - they are NOT WORTH it !! :p

We can BLAST them in another thread !!! :p :p :D :D My bazookas are FULLY LOADED already !!! :D

UPSR RESULT (2011) OUT TODAY (17/11/2011)

How did LH perform ?

Any news from senior parents ?

MY APOLOGIES :o

Some parents have emailed and PM me their disappointment that I have brought "politics" and "shame" into the school thread/forum and to the school by highlighting its "short-comings".

To these parents, my sincerest apologies :o :o

Please note that I will highlight ANY FORM ABUSES (political or non-political) if it happens to or at SJKC Lick Hung until all my children leave the school, after that I have no direct interest anymore. Yes, this is deviating from my original intention for the forum but then, at that time, I was naive and did not know that it was this bad ... :( and official channel (through PIBG AGM) does not work due to the "choy tan" AJK and HM stranglehold, so that is a DEAD END.

So for those people who don't like me to "say and highlight" bad things happening in Lick Hung, please be patient, just wait, only a few more years to go .... :D :D

My intention is TO SEE LICK HUNG RUN LIKE A TOP-NOTCH SCHOOL IN ALL ASPECTS and deserving of all its awards (Cluster, HPS) and live up to its motto .... I believe if there is something "wrong" or not right, highlight, correct it and perform better ... NOT SWEEP UNDER THE CARPET and pretend it is not there .... OR ELSE the school might as well throw away its motto " TO PERFORM, TO LEAD, TO BE THE BEST "

It is important for LH to do the RIGHT THING IN THE RIGHT WAY AND RIGHT MANNER if you want to perform, to lead and to be the best ... ;)

To those parents that say that SJKC Chee Wen and SJKC Tan Cheng Lock are better off since I don't comment about them ... well ....

The other SJKCs in SJ/USJ are of no direct concern to me, so there is no need for me "kay-poh" there ;) ... the parents there can take care of it themselves IF they want to - their kids, their school, their "sufferings". I know that there is a strong active group of parents in Chee Wen (kudos to them) - that is why we are CALLED PARENTS (ibubapa) in the PIBG (PTA) .... I will lend moral support and give an opinion or two on COMMON issues (again since it also affects Lick Hung  )

I have NO PERSONAL AGENDAs against anyone EXCEPT JUST DON'T ABUSE THE PARENTS' TRUST ... because I am one of them ... :)

CM,

No need to apologise for you have been doing an invaluable community service for many LH parents. Although focused on Lick Hung, I am sure many parents of other schools are also following the forum as it provides them with other parent's views and insights about education. This may have helped many parents albeit they are not as open and vocal as we are here. Like the motto - "to perform, to LEAD, to be the best "

As for the other SJKCs in SJ/USJ, I know that some of the parents (my own relations) have mentioned that they wished they also have something like this for their own schools.

Keep up the good work, you have my support. Lick Hung is very lucky but I think the school management, especially the headmaster and PIBG AJK may not agree with this point !

PPSMI @ Secondary School Level Support Letter Drive

There are a few pro-active parents outside Lick Hung main gate and on the Kett Star side just now during morning session break, asking for parents to sign a petition to support PPSMI (teaching of Science and Mathematics in English) especially AT SECONDARY SCHOOL LEVEL. They continue to support Lick Hung and all SJKCs to continue teaching both Science and Maths in both languages but their main aim or target is for PPSMI to continue at SECONDARY LEVEL.

If you feel strongly and would like to support, they should be around during the afternoon school break (6:00 - 6:30pm) this evening. I have already done my bit :)

Currymee,

Just remember to DO THE RIGHT THING IN THE RIGHT WAY AND RIGHT MANNER too when you discuss about Lick Hung :)

Try to avoid getting too emotional or personal as you have not heard the other side's story or reasoning.

For example, Madam Ong could be totally innocent in that she did not claim herself to be a YB (Yang Berhormat) but others, being typical Malaysian, may want to "bodek" her and thus refer to her as such.

In this context, it is UNFAIR to say bad things about her but should be directed towards those "kaki-bodeks".

Just my reminder for you to remain fair and objective - you are doing a good community service, keep it up !

Currymee,

Another point to bear in mind is that you cannot please all the people in this world ;) Don't try to do that. Don't apologise for doing the RIGHT THING.

Most importantly is for you to try to remain fair, ethical and keep your integrity.

People in power/authority (HM, PIBG AJK, politician, policeman, school teachers etc) will never like people who question them on anything. And if any of them were to tell you that they welcome feedbacks (negative ones) is a two-face liar.

People love praises, it is human nature. Thus, when you have to criticise, always BE FAIR, CONSTRUCTIVE AND OBJECTIVE, avoid emotional outbursts, personal mud-slinging and ridiculing anyone. Then you will get their respect and ears however reluctant they may be.

Simple advice from another "wily old fox" :D - no free bowl of currymee needed

Extracted from BN Playing Politics in School thread ....

Although it is political, I am highlighting it here as I know the school management reads this thread/forum and it is IMPORTANT for them to know that they have made a SERIOUS faux pas (bad move) in forcing parents to SIGN OVER the RM100 money and attend the "ceramah"... hope they will take note and call these parents and apologise to them and work out something to return the money, it is not worth it - don't be foolish !! As far as I know, some of these parents are very, very angry with Lick Hung and MCA ....

Yes, it has already BACKFIRED BIG TIME in Lick Hung :p . I was told by some parents yesterday that to make things worse, parents that refused to attend the "ceramah" were FORCED TO SIGN OVER THE RM100 MONEY AS DONATIONS TO THE SCHOOL !!!!!!  These parents are seething after reading the newspapers that schools are not allowed to do so ... aiyah, Lick Hung, ARE YOU CRAZY ? Don't touch this money - it is TOO POLITICAL !! :(

If Lick Hung school management is reading, they better rectify this asap before they kena reprimand from MoE and FORCED TO RETURN THE MONEY (no face - shamed), other schools have already got whacked for doing similar things (see below) ....

I got a not-so-nice email telling me that I should learn Mandarin and read Chinese newspapers before I open my BIG mouth on any topic about SJKC Lick Hung. The emailer also said ".... that Lick Hung disseminates information to the public regularly but too bad, I am a BANANA and don't understand. It is not the school's fault, that I am an incompetent parent ...." - I don't know who the emailer is, but hey, I am getting AN ANSWER AT LAST - albeit, not as pleasant as I hoped for ... :p :p but I can live with that ... :)

The emailer also included the following hyperlinks and from what I can figure out, they are related to the school new block.

Since like the emailer said, I am a BANANA and don't read Mandarin, perhaps, some kind forumer who does, can help to extract key points for me - a non-Mandarin reading parent :o :o

Bro,

My secretary just helped me to translate all these difficult links because I suddenly striked by partial amnesia, I forgot some Chinese words oredi.. :D

The 1st link is from chinapress – the pibg chairman (don’t know how to translate his rather difficult name) said on 14th Nov, the school needs 1.8 millions to construct new block and so far has collected 1 mil i.e. still short of 800k..

2nd link is from Sin Chew – the Sin Chew's CEO said for the past 18 years, Sin Chew in collaboration with Tiger Beer had raised total of 3.3 millions from 4 Tiger charity show. That’s all, no mention of how much LH needed and still short of…

Pardon my secretary’s poor command in Mandarin… I literaliy translate what she told me in her broken mandarin to my broken ingeris... :D

Cheers

The 1st link is from chinapress – the pibg chairman (don’t know how to translate his rather difficult name) said on (CORRECTION: 14th May not 14th Nov ;) ), the school needs 1.8 millions and so far has collected 1mil i.e. still short of 800k..

2nd link is from Sin Chew – the Sin Chew's CEO said for the past 18 years, Sin Chew in collaboration with Tiger Beer had raised total of 3.3 millions from 4 Tiger charity show. That’s all, no mention of how much LH needed and still short of… (looks like from the photo, LH is getting RM384,896.00 from Tiger-Sin Chew - TQ)

Pardon my secretary’s poor command in Mandarin… I literaliy translate what she told me in her broken mandarin to my broken ingeris... :D

Cheers

Thanks Bro,

So if Lick Hung only needs RM1.8 million to build the new block (and short of RM800k then, last I heard from the news-at-main-gate, is that it is reduced to RM200K or less - God knows which number is correct now  ) then why he said RM4-5 million in the last two PIBG AGM then ?? or is my oral Mandarin so shitty that I cannot differentiate 1.8 from 4 and 5 :p :p :p

OK, let's give them the benefit of doubt that my oral Mandarin is shitty, so why don't they just tell the parents openly in a notice then ... since the amount (if it is RM1.8million) is very reasonable for such a building ?

I smell rotten fish somewhere ...

BTW, please say TQ to your "secretary" for me ;) most appreciated service.

It is true - here is the news link (in Mandarin)

http://www.chinapress.com.my/node/269379

but there is no mention of overall percentage of passes.

Quite a big drop from previous year (2010) for those students obtaining 7As from 165 (2010) to 113 (2011) - but the number of candidates is smaller.

Perhaps some of the teachers who visit the forum can furnish us with more accurate news.

Well, be very careful with machine… remember the fiasco when the PRC leader visited UM. The welcome banner was translated using Google Translate, and the 1PM has to apologize to his PRC’s counterpart on behalf of his substandard bureaucrats.

Ps. I am relatively ok in this two languages and hence I always try to have some fun/thrill when I watched DVD by switching on the subtitles in the opposite language... For those who can understand English and Mandarin, please do so and is full of fun reading the machine translation which appear in the subtitles.. extra entertainment apart from the movie… :D

I was refering to absolute total number (as in 165 students got 7As in 2010 versus 113 students got 7As in 2011 - so an actual decrease by 52 students getting 7As) while the school reported percentage of 7As out of total candidates (if my maths is correct) ... anyway I could be wrong, ... like kwchang, I also use Google translator.

Does anyone know what is the total percentage of passes ? Previous year, it was around 88%. I heard some parents mentioned that it has dropped also.

Standard 3 (2012) Morning Class schedule ?

Can some senior parents with children in the morning session confirm the following ?

Some parents have said the following but after comparing with other SJKCs, they also become not so sure.

1) Have to be in class by 7:00 AM

2) Morning session classes start at 7:15 AM ? - (other SJKCs start at 7:30am)

3) Morning session ends at 12:50 PM

The school did not inform the Standard 2 children as to the time schedule when they switch over to the morning session next year. :( Some of us first time "morning session" parents are guessing.

Playing STATISTICS again ? Look ... never mind what Lick Hung gets ...

Sorry to be blunt and straight so early ..... As far as PARENTS ARE TRULY CONCERNED .... it is what their children get that matters .... what Lick Hung gets is what the HM and schhol teachers worry about (affect their bonuses) ... Rachel,

Furthermore, please remind your daughter that in the morning session (Std 3-6), the children GO STRAIGHT TO THEIR RESPECTIVE CLASSES upon arrival and not assembled in the canteen or car park like Std 1 and Std 2.

The class location (usually remain unhanged but anything can happen in Lick Hung !! ) will be made available for viewing at the MAIN GUARDHOUSE WINDOW or the notice board at the canteen (next to staircase to the office) a few days before the start of school. (Note: from what I have seen of the "old" class location map, Std 3 and Std 1 share the same classrooms, so the our kids will go back to their old Std 1 (2010) classrooms for Std 3 in 2012 !)

I was also informed by other senior parents (TBC) that on the first day of school, parents are allowed to come into school and PAY THE BILLS/FEES  :p :p - (TO BE CONFIRMED) !!

IMHO ... good deals and bargains ... go to EASY CARRIER shop (at Summit Shopping Centre USJ, Ground floor) - go with the SMILEY brands ... cheaper and just as good as Swan (fyi - the maker of Smiley ( http://www.taiping-poly.com/index.asp ) also make bags for Jusco etc ... http://www.taiping-poly.com/client.asp
)

Their own brand SMILEY starts from RM49.99 all the way to RM100+ ... I just buy the RM49.99 and if koyak, then just replace, the only weak part that I noticed is the part where the trolley handle joins to the bag at the base, so when it comes out, I just SUPER-GLUE back, (it came out after 6 months as my son was pulling it UPWARDS to go UPSTAIRS, not designed for such method of use  ) and it has lasted since ... wow, will still use next year !! :D

Don't ask me how I end up knowing all these .... :p :p

How my kids coped back then at LH -
Wake up at 6 or 6:30 (too long ago to remember) and it did not matter if they are still half asleep ...they sleep in the car ! Leave it to the kids, they learn to cope eventually.

Think of the kids in JB ... they get up at 5am? Sleep all the way to Singapore everyday. Going to LH fr anywhere in SJ/USJ is nothing la

Daughter wakes up at 6am, come down at 6.20. Have a cereal drink. Probably reach school by 6.45am. Breakfast probably during break.

Sometimes she sleeps at 11pm. Dont worry. Kids are hardy. They will find time to nap in between classes or after school.

Honestly this 6am thing... my daughter cope better than me. The training is really good as she is in Std 5 now and since the maid went home.. she prepare all her stuff the night before. Put the school bag near the door.

When she was in STD 3.. there was an incident, we drove all the way to school to realise.. she did not wear her school shoes. That is good training.. Now she wakes up at 5.45am.. before the mummy.

Not to worry. The kids really will cope better than the parents at this 6am game.

LH "unofficial" position on PPSMI until 2015 - as per Kementerian ruling

I had the chance to have breakfast with one of my favourite Lick Hung school teacher by accident (saw her at Parkway, so makan together) :)

I asked her about LH's position about PPSMI. Well, she said as far as the school is concerned, they will follow the Kementerian's directive. As it stands for the moment, PPSMI will still be made available only for those in Std 2 (2011) this year (the last batch) and above and continue with them until 2015. After that, LH will revert 100% back to Mandarin as it is now for the current Std 1 (2011).

However, she said, between friends, it is best for me to continue emphasising Maths and Science in Mandarin for my son as that it what the LH teachers can teach both subjects best in.

I am afraid you read the post wrongly. I was commenting on currymee's earlier post where he said his son has to eat in the canteen. My comment is about being healthier to bring your own home-prepared food. There is no compulsion to buy canteen food. If you had read my later post, i commented that some of the parents send lunches over for their kids to eat in the canteen.

I beg ur pardon. Do you mean children MUST buy food from the canteen CANNOT bring food from home?

The children CAN BRING home food and it is best to do so. :) I mentioned that he has to "go to canteen" - means to sit down and eat his food (home packed) properly instead of munching while playing. I know that his class teacher (Std 2) discourages the kids to eat in class but go to canteen instead.

The main thing to teach the kids to avoid is THE JUNK FOOD (snacks) that the canteen sells. Some of these junk foods, don't know what brand, usually are from China, if you know what I mean .... ;) (if you read the news on China's lack of QC for food!)

I always tell my son if you want any snack or junk food, let me know and we go and buy for you to take to school. Let me buy you "PROPER" junk or snack food ;) - SAFER !!

To give an example is the "seaweed" sold in school canteen, I know my son was tempted, so I took him to Jusco and bought for him the "Nico-Nico" brand instead. He commented that Nico-Nico is more expensive than the school canteen one, I said I know but I trust the QC of this one better. So, if it is expensive, don't take everyday lor ... he said OK, settled :D

School badges can bought on the same day as you buy the school exercise books.

The temporary card badge with name and class is to be worn until the 1st month (depends on class teacher instruction) - for the teacher and the kids to familiarise with each other.

For SAFETY REASONS due to fear of kidnapping and misrepresentation, Lick Hung school children do not wear student name tags or any badges with name - that was what I was told.

Mommy,

I think he is already doing some work at the day-care, so when he comes home, he doesn't want to do anymore.

Like my son, once he has finished the "agreed" amount of work for the day, I can forget asking him to do "extra" ... he will not budge

I can hear and see children flying KITES at the back though ... :D

Hahahaha :D ... I got an email asking me TO BE PATIENT and he/she said "Rome was not built in one day" .... ;)

CM, i wouldn't say u have created a study 'monster' but instead you have instill good interest of study habits in your son. This is really a good start to build the foundation. Imagine, they have many years ahead of them in studies right up till uni. I hope slowly my gal will build up her interest in study without me 'pushing' and reminding her all the time. But i also know each child is unique so most important is for the parent to know their child well.

Unfortunately, not exactly so ;) ... more like he knows there will be NO TV, NO computer games, NO comics etc ... until he has done his DAILY exercises (if any) and he knows each time, there is a delay or he procastinate, the exercises don't go away but back-logged and the amount builds up, so better to clear it daily ... :D :D

But some of the positive values are starting to build in ...so I am happy with that.

I shall wait and see ...
Currymee, your son is smart. My one cannot lah....recently, he have to wake up 7am++ for going to Day care centre as I have to go office, he has already acted like a "Zombie" :p , some more he should follow TRANSPORTER's time table, maybe should wake up before 6am

So, I am not dare to buy the new shoe lace type.

Maybe, I will try it next year

My son the same, the transporter will come at 6am, means the latest he needs to wake up is 5.30am. If he continues to drag his homework from afternoon till late night, he will be sleeping in class most of the time....

Seriously, it is TOUGH, even now, my son still struggles to get up by 8AM - and this is already ONE HOUR EARLIER than his usual 9am .... yup, morning school will be ONE HELL OF A SHOCK to the kids next year !! :D

Right now, I am also training myself to wake up by 6AM as I have to prepare everything to get him ready for school - coffee (or else I will be sleepy when driving !! :D ), breakfast, uniform etc ... sometimes I wonder WHO IS GOING TO SCHOOL ?

It takes time BUT what is KEY is consistency in your "rules", "carrots and sticks" and activites ... once you are doing that, then they will know, learn and accept.

Took me the whole Std 1 to "drill" some discipline into my son AT HOME although the school has done the drilling for the school .... don't you notice how well the children behave in school ? ;)

That is what SJKCs are famous for ... DISCIPLINE :p

He was ok in Std 1. His prob starts in Std 2. Not afraid of the sticks anymore. Cannot figure out the reason. So I stopped the sticks after his final exam, unless I really blow up, try to combine a bit of carrot. Not much improvement after 1.5 mths. May need more time for him.

However, be FIRM in telling him that ONLY IF he finishes the agreed amount of work and when he does, you keep the end-of-bargain ... it is OK for him to day-dream (my son does that also, saying this and that) but when it goes over-board, remind him, WORK FIRST THEN PLAY !! :)

In case anyone doesn't know of it yet, you can check the kids' marks, position in form and class and overall %....just like an online report card. I'm having fun and my kids are cringeing...

I tried the url link on the Sistem Analisis Peperiksaan Sekolah (SAPS) above.

http://saps.moe.gov.my/ibubapa2/index.php

Wow, all my son's results are ONLINE as well as his position for Std 2 in the whole of Lick Hung   !! Showed it my son, and told him, coming in at more than 100+ out of 454 students means a lot of work to go .... :(

I set him a target of top 100.

So now, we can monitor the kids progress in a bigger context (overall standard position and not just class position).

What surprises me is that the school is actually giving marks to the kids for MUSIC and ART too .... walau - I didn't know they took exams for these subjects too ?

Apparently, it holds the records of EVERY STUDENT (Govt schools) IN MALAYSIA !!!

Bro,

Thanks for the link… it is useful info to evaluate the kid’s result in the whole standard two..

The changes can be very drastic due to the sheer size of Lick Hung students..

For example, based on my kid’s result.

Position in class is 3 and position in whole standard two is 17...... However, the position in whole standard two can drop to 76 when the position in class only dropped to 7.

I think the calculation of percentage and hence the position in class do not take into consideration the marks of music and art subjects...

You can easily verify the numbers shown by the link with the one appear in the report card... There are the same.

I did not make a soft copy of report card like sagamihara. So, I can't 100% say the marks are correct.

Aisaayyy, after a few years in LH.... now only discover that exam marks differ only by a small percentage points? What does that tell you?

...no comment for the position in whole std 2 as I don't know it. Hahaha, you should do what I did one year. I stood in front of the school notice board and wrote down all the total scores of the kids in the same std as my kid. In the past LH used to put up the score sheets of every kid on the notice board, not sure if they still do it. From that list you will be able to determine where yr kid stands overall for the year.

Like I asked above, what does this tell you?

For me, I was not concerned whether my kids were in the top 10 or the bottom 10 (where they usually end up !!). Life was already tough as it was coping with the homework and tuition. Afterall, it was primary school and they were supposed to enjoy their school-life.

I have double-checked and my son's data etc ... are all OK :)

I also have "buzzed" the school mum's network (I am the only DAD in it :p ) on the above.

Some of them said that their children class positions are ALL MESSED UP, and are very unhappy ! Well, they said they are going to talk to the school teachers when school restarts next year ...

I think the Sistem Analsis Peperiksaan Sekolah (SAPS) may have a different method of calculating class positions or standard positions than LH (maybe based on weightage for certain subjects) OR as usual, Government computer systems are usually FAULTY and FULL OF BUGS (remember the incident for registeration earlier this year  ) - nothing surprises me anymore.

What does the position in overall standard tells..??

Ok, I look at it this way (so far, I haven’t told my kid his overall position in standard two and likely will not tell him).

Let’s use his result for example..

He was no.3 in his class for one of the exams but his overall position is 17. There are 10 classes in standard 2 i.e. there will be 10 students scored No.1 position, 10 students for No.2 and 10 students for No.3.

His position of 17 tells me (to a greater extent) he is in the middle-point of all the top 3 students in standard 2 during this particular exam..

It is also a relatively good measurement of his class in relation to other 9 classes. If his overall position is at the upper quartile of 30 , his class should be the top class among the 10 classes. Similarly, if his overall position is in the lower quartile of 30, then his class is at the bottom of the 10 classes.

As Chang correctly mentioned, life is already tough for the kids in highly competitive chinese school like LH. This info is good for parents, may not necessary for the kids. Let them enjoy the childhoold without unnecessary "KPI".. :) :p

As Sagamihara has read and understood my message, the positions are for the parents to gauge but should not be a burden for the children

Remember CM's observation that 2% difference in marks meant a difference of 30 positions. Imagine having lost like 5% marks could mean the kid drops to the the bottom of the class! Is the position so important? For me it is not..

What is more important is the child has learnt the subjects and is able to cope with the mandatory exams.

And more importantly, being able to cope with secondary school after the UPSR. Language skills are very important.... be reasonably good in BM if they will proceed to Kebangsaan secondary schools, be good in Mandarin if they proceed to private Chinese secondary schools. And ensure they have a good grasp of English for their future working life.

Bro,

Good point and roughly I have made the same conclusion and analysis :D

I mentioned it here for the parents to know - after all, this is THE PARENTS forum !! :D This is the one piece of information feedback on the children's exam performance that Lick Hung school management has witheld from the parents in the school report card when compared to the other SJKCs.

I can understand and appreciate the school's reasoning in that it will create A LOT OF STRESS esp when one discovers that a miniscule difference in percentage can be grossly exaggerated in the standard position !!

Is this a better way to encourage our kids to do better in school? By telling them that they are 100+ in whole std?
Maybe some senior parents can advice if it does really encouraged your child. :D
I'm learning various method to encourage my forever dreaming son to do better in school...Else, I dunno which secondary school he will be sent to after UPSR!!!

I was informed that the previous Lick Hung HM used this "open declaration" method as the CARROT and STICK, needless to say, it produced BOTH KINDS OF RESULTS ... both excellent (90%+ passes) :) and highly strung and stressed-out parents and kids .... :( (see KWChang's posts about notice-board, today, they are no longer displayed as far as I know ;) )

How you use that data is up to your individual parenting. The data can be a DOUBLE-EDGE sword - on the good side, it can be a GREAT MOTIVATOR and on the flip side, a REAL KILLER and STRESS. So as a parent, you have to exercise your most judicious judgement and care in applying it. You also have to know your own children's mental and psychological make-up and response system to such feedbacks.

In my son's case, he mentioned to me that he would like to get 7As for UPSR - I am happy to hear that is what he desires :) . In return, I mentioned to him that STATISTICALLY since LH moved to Subang Jaya more than 10 years ago ... each year LH produces around 100+ 7As students. While it is not a SURE THING, logically, if you are in the top 100 of LH, your chances are better, assuming that the quality and level of difficulty of exams in both LH and UPSR remain approximately the same.

So, right now, he is using that as a TARGET to spur and motivate himself.

I encourage my son to set REASONABLE ACHIEVABLE TARGETS for himself, it is part of his growing-up character training as I slowly ease off the target settings for him. I believe that a child should grow up with some "ambition" and "target" lest they turn into a mindless blob in the future .... expecting to be taken care off and rely on handouts by the Govt, which, sad to say, as a non-Bumiputra, he is not going to get !!

At the end of the day, it is all about BALANCE and setting APPROPRIATE TARGETS and EXPECTATIONS for both parents and child.

There is NO PERFECT 100% GUARANTEED SUCCESS approach - it all depends on the individual combination of parent and children.

Mine is 80% CARROTS and 20% STICK ... if it is 100% CARROTS, he will "rot" and becomes "tidak apa"

As an ex-HM, let me say that the "theoretical" main use of position in standard/form list and its sister concept - streaming is for the school to identify the weak students and then allocate the necessary resources to assist them.

However, in reality, the whole idea is usually skewed towards who are the best and competition for the top classes. And when that happens, a lot of stress, "kiasu" behaviour and ultra-competitive parents and students start to emerge to the detriment of themselves and the school at large.

In Lick Hung's case with almost 90% of students doing well, scoring As and Bs based on UPSR results, these added negative stresses and elements are unnecessary and more likely to be counter-productive than helpful. Thus, I support the current Lick Hung HM's decision not to make the "position in standard" information publically available. I remember having read that the HM has mentioned this in the PIBG AGM.

However, since he has the data and authority, I do urge the Lick Hung HM to do a "remedial" streaming instead of a general streaming across the board. He should identify the weakest 50 students (remedial class) and put his BEST teachers to teach and assist them. Yes, the best teachers will complain (as the weakest students are normally an indiscipline lot as well) but he should remind them that it is also a good deed to do so. I did that when I was the HM and actually gave the best teachers extra bonuses as incentives (out of my own HM allowances but when the teachers found out, they returned the money to me - credit to them :) ) to teach the remedial classes.

Note to the HM, this was how I improved the school's SRP and SPM performances by 8-10% in the overall pass rates in the 5 years that I was the HM. ;) - maybe Lick Hung can score 99-100% pass rates if you do so.

Fong, thanks for your advice and I know this is a good approach to help the academically poorer students..

However, I think may be you don't understand much about Chinese schools.. or to be more precise Chinese school HMs... :D

Pass rate is never their worry, and is always at the bottom of their priority list.. :p

It is the other indicators like total students with all A, percentage of students with all A, highest % of students with A in the state/country…, etc. that keep them busy whole year..

I would like to clarify this post from any mis-understanding : - This is not a complaint. I salute the extra effort from the HM and the teachers in Chinese school, for being able to produce the excellent overall/individual results in exams, consistently year-by-year.

No matter what are the intentions to aim for such exam indicators, the underlying efforts from the school cannot be denied, and it is never an easy and interesting job..

Cheers

Sagamihara,

You are quite correct on the priorities of SJKCs HM. That is why I used the sentence ... ...."However, since he has the data and authority, I do urge the Lick Hung HM to do a "remedial" streaming instead of a general streaming across the board....."

I also gave him an example on what I think is the best way to apply the "remedial" streaming methodology. But it is all the HM's decision.

Sometimes I hope that HMs and teachers remember that their potential and influence to change the lives and futures of "weaker" students are much greater than those of the best students, who will be quite motivated and driven to succeed anyway.

My son's class positions were also all "messed up" and I have informed his class teacher. She had kindly re-checked the system and mentioned to me that she can only key-in the subjects marks (which is correct). The class position and standard position and all other statistics were automatically calculated by the Government SAPS system. She also could not figure out why it is different.

She also told me that in her official records, the class position in the school report card is the one used by the school's own computer system.

Fong, I fully concurred with you – education is to teach everyone regardless of competency and more focus should be given to those who need it.

This noble aim to teach everyone was one of the objectives of earlier Chinese schools when those school were founded by the good Samaritans.

Unfortunately, due to rapid changes in economic progress and thus education becomes result-oriented than knowledge-oriented, the initial noble objective skewed towards other priorities..

In urban Klang valley, it is difficulty for a “below average” students to get adequate attention in school and parents (if can afford) have to find private tuition to assist the students.

It is a demand and supply issue, most of the parents who put their kids in high performance school are willing to go extra miles to ensure their kids are within the lead.

...extra miles to ensure their kids are within the lead.
I wonder if it is pulling the cow up the tree? Parents should assess the true academic abilities of their children. Sometimes, the child may not be able to perform academically and get all the A's as expected. I would say the parent should be the first to identify the child's abilities and find the best route to develop the child's potential. Academic grades are important but if it is beyond the child, then we should not force the child beyond his/her abilities.

I think they call such developments - PROGRESS .... :D :D

I have to admit that although I am not in favour of streaming per say, there are strong merits to Cikgu Fong's proposal and idea of "remedial" streaming as he termed it. If it is to be implemented in Lick Hung, I will support it.

Lick Hung has the streaming class but it is definitely not what you think. My children's school did that too and it was very successful.

Happen before in Lick Hung you have half the class making noise(takes turn or concurrently) while the teacher is teaching and the rest of the pupils having difficulty to hear what the teacher is trying to teach, sometimes, the pupils' stories attracted more attention then the teachers.

Can you imagine, these poor pupils have to stay in the school from 7:15am to 4:10pm without a proper learning environment! The school is supposed to be the right place to study, but instead looked more like a place to "ruin" them. You can not imagine the psychological impact on these pupils. They can not study in school, probably not at home too! The poor kids are punished at such a young age, just because they are ignorant, playful, or lower IQ. If one is ruin at such a young age, he/she probably have a bleak future!

I got an email this morning that got me pretty stumped even until now I could not figure out how to answer.

The question was: What can the parents do if the school management decides not to proceed with the building of the new school block altogether citing lack of funds ? What will happen to all the money already collected ?

Honestly, the only answer I can think of is ... WAIT, WAIT and WAIT abd hope for the best ... like one senior parent who told me that she started donating when her daughter was in Std 2 and next year she will be in SMK USJ12 .... left the school already ... still KIV ....

Another answer is GIVE MORE MONEY would be the PIBG AJK preferred answer  :p

PS: I think the emailer was thinking about getting "refunds" but I don't think that is at all possible or feasible as it is classified as a "donation" ;)

Same here for most of us, that is why we have this forum to help each other :)

As for joining the PIBG committee/AJK (note: all parents with children in the school are automatically PIBG members with voting rights! ;) ), I have thought about it this year but having seen the way things were done (the PIBG election) and controlled by the HM in the Lick Hung PIBG AJK, I rather stay outside of them.

Some lessons in donation for the PIBG AJK

Read this article in the Star and some key points on donations and how the charities are evolving .... key point: TRANSPARENCY - perhaps, LH PIBG AJK can learn a few things too ...

Key extracts (from full article) ....

Children's rights activist Dr Hartini Zainuddin said the “secret” to winning donors' support is to be transparent and maintain a close relationship with them.

She said many organisations were worried the lack of funds but did not know what was wrong with their method of attracting donors.

“Malaysians are no longer taking money out of their pockets because of a one-time feel-good factor.

“Donors want to know that we are not just doing a charity but are involved in a long-term social investment,”

..... Human rights body Suhakam commissioner James Nayagam, formerly the Shelter Home executive director, said it was crucial for non-profit organisations to keep donors interested in their work.

Providing annual reports and audited accounts to donors have become the accepted norm, he said.

“They (donors) need to be shown that you are not interested only in their money.”

Construction of New Block Has Started !!! :D

I got an sms from an excited mum this morning that she saw constuction work has begun on Lick Hung's new school block :) . Since my morning was already full with visits from relatives, I only managed to drop by just now. ( Aiyah :( - I was hoping to grab a bowl of currymee but CHoy Kee was closed for holiday also. :p )

YUP !! GOOD NEWS !! :D :D The old block has been torn down (partially demolished) and the construction fencing/barriers to seal off the construction zone from the rest of the school blocks and courtyard are being erected.

The construction area covers the whole basketball area as well, so no more basketball for Lick Hung for a while.

Well, looks like June/July single-session target can still be achieved

Well, u can't go in there alone trying to make a diff. You may try to get a number of peoples to join u as a team. While waiting for my kid, I used to hear parents complained every now and then. A few have warned the school to be more rational when dealing with their children but most of them dare not complained because they don't want their children to be victimized later.

On surface things may appear to be ok in school, but a lot of psychology war is going on. The children are the ones suffer due to excessive emphasis on academic achievement. There is a need for the teachers to change their style so that the children would grow up a confident and creative leader, not a timorous, obedient worker.

Having said that, some parents are also at fault, their over emphasis on academic achievement pressure the school to be demanding. May be a new team of PIBG committee would be a more effective communication channel.

I attended PIBG meeting in another school, every year, without fail until my children graduated. There seem to have a lot of parents attending PIBG meeting, including Malay parents who can't understand Chinese. It is a very good school, not much of a problem, most parents would have nice things to say about the school, the PIBG, and the Board of Directors. Kind of strange, though the number is small but USJ parents usually attend the meeting there.

It's strange why parents attendance in Lick Hung is so small. Could it be the meeting is usually at the most inconvenient time? I remember those meetings normally clash with some other activities(contest at another place, activities in another school, etc) I had.

Yes, the Lick Hung's PIBG AGM is held on SUNDAY MORNING at the same time as the Christian parents are going to church, so that rules out an active group of parents. A few of the parents that I spoke to regularly highlighted this issue to me and they have made a number of requests for it to be shifted but to no avail.

Yes, this does happen ... one ex-parent told me that after one PIBG AGM incident a few years back where the father was vocal on an issue, the teacher made "snide remarks" at his children in school regularly until the father told the children to tell the teacher, "please go talk to my father" if you are unhappy.

I was told that it stopped after the father paid the class teacher a surprise visit.

EXACTLY !! :( But looking at the way things are run ... I am not sure IF any SANE STRAIGHT THINKING parent will want to join the PIBG AJK !! I know I definitely don't want to be part of the HM-controlled group !!

Every year I attend the PIBG AGM, I don't know whether to laugh (at the comedy act of the HM and Chairman, the prize-giving of plaques to the AJK themeselves (self-rewarding and congratulatory) and the election process) or to cry (at the apathy shown by the majority of parents who do not attend) ... but still I attend and say my piece. :p

Big Step Jump in Maths from Std 2 to Std 3

I had a look and let my son try some of the Std 3 Maths.

Just to let some of the coming Std 3 (2012) parents know to take note of the BIG STEP JUMP in Maths syllabus esp with the introduction of the long-form DIVISION with remainders and FRACTIONS. It takes a while for the kids to grasp the concepts, so you may want to start early on these two sections.

They may scream and shout "pu-chee-tao" as to what on Earth are these but do be patient when teaching them these concepts, it is one of the bedrock of Std 3 and upwards Maths.

PS: I always let my son do Maths during the school holidays to keep the brain ticking .... :)

Also, ching ming time!

We were there this morning :) Things are quite well organised by the teachers just that parents are overly kan-cheong and wouldn't budge even numerous reminders to leave the school compound resulted being 'shooed' out instead (yours truly included) :p

My gal enjoyed herself throughout the whole session. Btw, I've subscribed the catered food from canteen for my gal...RM100 for 2mths. Will update about the food when school officially starts. Will be another long day tomorrow...purchase of school books start tomorrow till friday (9am-11.30am).

I didn't subscribe to the food catering. or should I?

Busy Mom, which class is your gal?

So LH is going to start one session for ALL this July?

She is assigned to 1H. So for this week she will be in the 'green' class. How about yours?

I'm just trying out the school catering for 2 months. Reason being for her to settle-in in a new environment before she starts having her own group of friends to hang out during recess.

I'm curious, at what time is the recess for std 1?

Talking about kiasuness...... :D

Hahahaha :D .... fRaNkY, my "kiasuness" is a WEIRD VERSION one :p :p - normal kiasu, you hide and keep the "secret" and competitive advantage all to yourself and don't share !!

Mine, I tell the WHOLE WORLD .... hahahahaha .... :D

Actually, it is more of keeping my son busy with some work and keep the DISCIPLINE going over the long school holidays or else he will be plonked in 24/7 with ANGRY BIRDS ....

When I found him struggling with these sections of the Maths, it dawned upon me that certain steps and procedures need a bit more time than usual to be taught and understood. Since my boy is about average in LH, so I assume that most children may also suffer similar challenges later on in Std 3, so I might as well alert the other parents too !!

I'm curious, at what time is the recess for std 1?

Afternoon session recess (std 1 and 2) is from 3:40 to 4:00pm

Parents CANNOT GO in during this time for SAFETY and SECURITY reasons - they are afraid strangers may walk in and kidnapped or hurt a child.

Good for you :) Most important thing is to share and help first !! :D

As for food catering, it all depends on your child and you, if you are happy to "pack" her recess snack/meal then that is the best way - cheaper and you can control what she eats and the quality as well.

I know that for some working parents, it is not possible to "pack", hence they opt for the canteen food. However do take note that from what I have observed of kids in Std 1 and 2 from my conversations with them, after the initial few months, most kids just grab a small bite or even abandon the food altogether to go and play instead - so it is wasted BUT they will not tell you lest they get scolded .... so parents ended up paying for uneaten food for months before realising it  .

So, what you should do is after the initial period of say 4-6 weeks (2 months), just ask the kids if they still LIKE (don't say eat - it will make them defensive !! ) canteen food or not, if not, then can "pack" - it gives the kids a "way out" ;) - if they say, yes, they like, then you know they eat and want to continue ... otherwise, if no, then it is time to stop the catering and resort to "pack" food or give some pocket money to buy food.

I think std 1 kids dont eat alot so the catering will be a waste. Most of the time not finish or not eaten.

Try to make a sandwich or an egg or something they like will do.

They will be back by 1pm right? Mm yui ngor sei kei :D

CRAZY LONG QUEUE AT SCHOOL BOOKSHOP !!!

I went with one of my friend as his daughter will be in Std 1 in Lick Hung next year. I "kaypoh" :o :p a bit since I plan to go for currymee lunch afterwards while the little girl was attending the Program Transisi.

OMG  !! The queue was crazy - it was worse than Jaya Jusco on members Sales Day !! There were like 4-5 lines and almost 20-30 parents deep each and the number of people keeps on building up UNTIL the order was given to shut the school gate by 11:00 am !!!

Anyway, we managed to get in and had to queue for almost 2 hours before it was my friend's turn to purchase. I had a great time talking to a few new parents and scared the "shit" out of them also with all the LH "homework" stories hahahahaha ... :D :D And I AM NOT KIDDING !!!

Anyway, I got a copy of the booklist for Std 1 2012 (see below) - from what I can see, AS USUAL, only section B and C are required. Section A is FREE and Section D, in my opinion is a waste of money ...

Note:
FYI - items 13, 15, 16 and 25 will be given by the school class teachers later but you have to purchase now.

DON'T FORGET - You can also buy the SCHOOL UNIFORM BADGES (new version - with an additional ring for HPS) for 90cents each - they are all the sew-on type - not ironed ype.

Orientation Day - 30th December 2011 (Friday)

First day of school for Std 1 (2012) is 3rd January 2012 (Tuesday)

All other standards (Std 2-6), first day of school is 4th January 2012 (Wednesday).

Why all different ? - good question and like my son and his friends always reply when I ask them a question - "poo chee tao" (i.e. don't know!!) :p :p One of the mysteries of Lick Hung ....

Today I subscribe to the food catering, let her try out the food in canteen like CM said.

CM, you really "geng", Q up for 2 hours with us. and you act fast to post the book list.... I bought everything except the last section and the abacus.

I snap the photo on the latest update of school reopen date (4th Jan 2012).

I also snap photo on the banned visiting hours. So parents, if you plan to meet the teachers, please go at the right time.

but, how to upload photo here?

my gal showed worry face when she saw me: why are you so late, I'm so worried about you....

....

This is VERY IMPORTANT !! Please take note seriously. It is part of child psychology and if you can handle it well, it will make the MAJOR DIFFERENCE between a happy or miserable start for the new Std 1 child for the first few months.

1) For a child, starting Std 1, is a MAJOR NEW AND CHALLENGING PHASE in life - a phase that can last as long as 20 years (formal education) if they go all the way to get PhDs !! They have a lot of little worries and concerns but they will not let you know. Slowly, address each one by one, don't rush .... solve one at a time. In sydneymak's case above, her daughter has already hinted at the MOST COMMON CONCERN among new Std 1 kids - the worry of being left (abandon) in school esp when she sees other children all going home while she waits.

2) For the FIRST TIME, esp comes JANUARY, the child will definitely feel at one stage or another - the feeling of "abandonment" when you leave them at the school gates and can no longer accompany them all the way to the classroom or if they ssuddenly feel "pressured" or dislike the school routine, not making friends, scolded by teachers, homework chore etc .... - this is a RED ALERT to take note.

Do not brush it off as unimportant or just growing up phase (even though it is but to the children, it is like a HUGE MEGA PROBLEM and WORRY), take heed, pay attention and use this stage as the time to coach and parental guide.

One KEY STRATEGY to overcome this stage is for the PARENTS TO BE PUNCTUAL (10 minutes early is ON TIME was what I advised the parents back in 2010 !!) in picking up the kids esp at the early few weeks. If you can, try to rearrange your work or life schedule to make sure you don't miss this time. Then you can confidently tell your child that "Don't worry, just wait here, daddy/mommy will be here come rain or shine to pick you up when school finishes" - select a "pick-up point" in the canteen area and always be there.

Once they build up that TRUST, CONFIDENCE and FAITH that they will not be abandoned in school ... the rest is easier to resolve .... ;) Most children bawled their heads off at the start of school is because of this .... oh, some can also suffer from it a few months later ... delayed shocked !!

....

When i asked my gal about the interesting things that she learnt today in class, she keep telling me that her only friend is mad at her. everyone is mad at her including the teacher because she does her work wrongly....... :( dunno how to handle her

Then tell her gently, it is ok, everyone makes mistakes, that is why all children go to school to learn. What is important is that you learn where, what and why you have done it wrong and try to improve from there.

As for the friends, just tell her, it is ok, just like in tadika, sometimes you and so-so also get mad with each other, what is important is to forgive, forget and be able to say sorry. Remind her that the other children are also first time and unsure like her, so just always be nice and polite and you will make a lot of other new friends !! :)

I need to remember and recall ALL the parental coaching that I did from 2009-2010 on my son and his group of friends ... hahahahaa .... so bear with me if I am a bit long-winded :p :D :D Getting old and forgetful. :( :o

ALWAYS REMEMBER TO PUT YOURSELF IN THEIR LITTLE SHOES and try to see and understand things from their perspective and THEN help to resolve it by using your knowledge and experience as an adult.

They are not little adults - they are still CHILDREN !! ;)

Wow!, your RED ALERT really alarm me. Actually i wasn't late. I walked straight to the canteen once the gate opened. As there were too many parents picking up their precious ones, by the time i reached her, she showed her worried face.

Yesterday, i acted more quickly than Monday. she was still worried...i think she need even more friends.....

Thanx CM. i wish all teachers apply the knowledge of child psychology too when they deal with kids, especially the new students. heard from one mummy that her son was scolded by the teacher because the son talked too softly when asking permission to go to toilet..:p

Oooopppss ... did not mean to scare you - just to draw your attention !! :p

If you are not late then just LET HER KNOW that there are so many parents waiting outside, so everyone has to come in carefully and slowly so as not to fall down, kids are smart, they will understand IF you tell them :) (btw, this is a common feature for Std 1 and 2 parents - so do let her know !)

Well, as for making friends, is your girl the "shy" type ? If she is not, then you can coach her by telling her when she sees someone she likes or want to be friends with, just go and say hello and introduce herself. Someone has to make the first move and all kids are naturally shy in the first few days, so you tell her to be the brave one and make the first move and each time, she has done that, congratulate her ... it is positive reinforcement for a child to come out of their "shy" nature :)

BTW, after they know each other for about a month or so ... they will all be like little out-of-control "monkeys" in the class   , I know I have seen them many times .... Lick Hung teachers always have to frighten them with the "light-sabre" (cane) to bring some kind of control and order in class !! My son was caned in Std 1 so often until I was summoned to talk to the class teacher - paisei :o

I learned to overcome the shyness the HARD WAY many many moons ago  , if I want to date a girl, I don't ask I don't get ... so .... learn from there lah ... :p :D
