Dear Forumers esp parents of Lick Hung students,

My son just got back from first day at school (Std 1) and was given his school/class time-table. Problem is each subject is given an abbreviation, most of which I have worked/guessed out except a few. Hope some enlightened parents from experience can help out a "blur" sotong here :)

PM=??? (this may be Pendidikan Moral) pls confirm
MU=??? (I bet RM100 - not Manchester United) :D
PSV=???
PJ=??? (this may be Pendidikan Jasmani) pls confirm
PJK=???
SC=Science
KOMP=komputer (Malay spelling)
BM=Bahasa Malaysia
BI=Bahasa Inggeris
BC=Bahasa Cina
M3=Mathematics
*SC *M3 = presumably English version of Science and Maths

Hope someone can help out.

How about a plain phone call to the school?, surely they're the best people to clarify your doubts?.

BS, thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking of doing that this morning if no forumers are able to assist - but USJ.com forumers are much more helpful - thanks :)

Trouble with calling the school like Lick Hung is a catch 22 - you call them they (the office) say talk to the teachers but you cannot even step into school to talk to teachers, so you end up standing outside flapping like a headless chicken, worse still, if your children don't understand Mandarin that well, so instructions from teachers come back totally blur ! Most of us parents outside, actually end up helping each other. :)

THis is only the beginning,mate come Sat.for school activities,you also cannot enter the school,have to wait outside under the sunny skies and traffic jam and horns.I was just wondering isn't the school belongs to the gomen or HM ?I think you better attend the PIBG AGM come April ( closing date ) and shout thye hell of the noise.

Just to add , I think there are 2 types of math classes, if you notice M3 and M3* - M3 is for Maths taught in English and M3* is for Maths taught in Chinese...

There was a kind parent from my daughter's class who had printed 47 copies of timetable for each student in the class, so kind....

By the way, I find 47 students in a class bit huge, can anyone share how many students are there in your child's class in Lick Hung?

My son's class is 46 .... so I think that's about the average 46-48. The Science is also taught in *SC and SC.

How can that be, I'm intruiged? Any parent can visit the school office during working hours, isn't that normal?. Well, plausible if the teacher is in class and wouldn't appreciate any interruption. But I'm sure the school office will be able to offer any assistance within their capability. If school office can't even entertain a phone call to clarify common issues, then the school administration is possibly in the ruts!

P.S.. as if the school office is as busy as a General Hospital? :eek:

In my daughter's class, the class teacher gave out copies of the time table and everyone has to glue to the back of their small book. Last week during orientation day, we were also told there is no need to copy down the time table on the notice-board, as copies will be given out.

Yesterday, the parents are allowed in from 2-3pm and to talk to the teachers. From what I understand, after that, you can still go in but it is by appointment basis and you have to register at the guard house.

terisunny

and do remember to avoid trying to get in during recess time. It's a definite no-no! nothing you say will sway the guards to let you in :D

My kids are ex-Lick Hung ... the reason for not allowing visitors was made during my kids' time. There were kidnapping issues then and this came about to protect your kids. So what if you need to get permission to see anyone in the school? We should support that. Furthermore, if parents are allowed to meet the teachers during school hours, that would disrupt classes ... go after school hours

Did you all realise that the UPSR results drop. 2007 - 91%, 2008 - 90%, with 143 pax score 7A's ,2009 -89% with only 102 pax score 7A's.I forsee 2010- 87% pass with less than 100 score 7A's then 2011- 85% pass then 2012 -kaput !

Wow! its changed THAT much. I've NOT walked into any school related matter since 10 years ago, where my boys are now grown up and on their own. I hope I don't have to do this all over again. Whats past is past.

I agree with KWChang - there were kidnapping issues in the past. I was told the same thing by some parents yesterday when I asked why is it so difficult for parents to go in and do simple thing like buying exercise books - seems so bureaucratic.

Let me clarify- the kidnap case was never happen inside the school compound but the child follow the kidnapper while walking to school so that next few days rumours start to spread like wildfire and parents personally see and pick their child back and causes havoc inside and outside the school.

My son seems to think that the new canteen operator offer more choices, more value for money.

Parents are allowed to go into the school at certain hours, you can check the visiting hours at the main gate. That's a notice. For morning session, you are not allowed in early in the morning, recess and 30 minutes before school over. You can visit any other time.

In the newspaper you always read about people complaint about taking action only when something bad happen, here, the school is taking at action before something bad happen inside the school compound. Is that good or bad?

If you need to clarify certain things with the teacher, you can always write a note, telling the teacher and asking the teacher for their contact number. Have a good relationship with the form teacher, good or bad, they are still human.

There are many cases where unruly parents just walk in and scold and threaten the teacher infront of the students in the class, in some cases till the female teacher cry. Would you expect the students to respect the teacher after that? Good or bad, they are still human.

My daughter always have the teacher's contact no, last few years and would call for help after school when needed. Treat them with respect and courteous.

If you feel the teacher is not good, can always ask to change classes or move them to a private school :D

Hang around the school if you can when students arrive. A majority comes in Merc, BMW, Volvo, Camry and other luxury car.... unlike my perodua... :D

So most parents are in the professional group... my daughter told me... almost all are doctors, lawyers, MDs, CEO, COOs, on the higher pay salary... translate? Higher income parents kids... wont it be potential kidnapping case?

Security have to be tight and have to teach your kids to be really careful...

The security control measures in Lick Hung (if you can call it as control measures) are symbolic, not much help to prevent kidnapping.

Donít get me wrong, I respect the effort of the school to limit public/parents visiting hours but this is not an effective method as EVERYONE can pretend as parents and walk into school compound.

Of course, school is and should be a place where public can and is allowed to enter. But, we can only blame the policies of gomen past and present that lead to the present sad stage.

Maybe an easy and straight forward way is to issue a parent card and the security guard will only allow those who carry parent card to enter the school compound during working hours. Something similar to the resident card in condominium.

I would like to stress that I hate all form of security controls, but you really have no choice living in this country.

Nowadays, kidnapper also targeting middle income group and ask for ransom within their affordable range.

Sure you read news that parents paid 20k, 50k, etc for ransom. Not few hundred thousands or million.

Donít think you are not driving a sleek German automobile, you are not a target..

Today is my turn as wifey not free....The class starts at 12.55 and I reach 12.10 already jam... luckily my small car can easily squizh thru while the bigger have to wait in patience.

I agree with this totally. I always make an appointment to see the teachers if I have any issues. And from then on, managed to build and maintain a good relationship with them. That relationship is extremely vital if you want to keep tabs on your children's progress.
