If it is white on the other side, than 99.9% it is what Jan described. I think it is called sandpit fish or Ikan sebelah in malay.

maybe seeing the real thing only for the first time, but if not mistaken unknowingly we do eat it regularly.
Where? It's one of the open secret recipe ingredient(in powder form) for KL style Hokkien Mee to make it more ohmm, originally made popular by Kam liang kee at Jln Petaling.

We have plenty of them here in the Swam River but they are a little bit different. I used to fish for them too.

It's called Flounder.

I like to eat them Steam.http://forum.ipoh.com.my/images/smilies/yum.gif

..It's called Flounder...
Quite right but not exactly if you look at these Googled images (http://images.google.com.my/images?q=flounder&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=8i46S_yVJ5Po7APkuLTvAw&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4&ved=0CCQQsAQwAw)

It is more likely a sole (http://images.google.com.my/images?q=sole+fish+pics&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=CTA6S5y5PIvi7AOtsrWJBg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CBAQsAQwAA)

These types of bottom dwelling fish have evolved because by lying on one side, the fish is flat on the bottom and covered by sand, it is difficult to get eaten by other predators.

CLFoo is also correct - my Aunt fries this fish till crispy and then pounds it into powder. The powdered fish is great as a flavor enhancer - better than using MSG. It is generaly used by Hokkien Mee sellers.

Apparently the flatfish or sole has an interesting name! Half-smooth tongue sole or Latin name Cynoglossus semilaevis Gunther. They are found in river and sea.
