Hi all,

My fren has this problem.
When he gets hungry, his stomach becomes a bit bloated and there is some pressure build up near the sternum making him uncomfortable.
So he keeps trying to burp to reduce the pressure and he does burp.
It also happens after eating.
It can go on for hours.

Anybody had this problem before?
Please help.

Please help.it could be a buildup of bacteria h.pylori in the stomach moving up towards the esophagus...

Or, the nerves that stimulate the diaphragm muscles could be easily irritated.

m has the same problem (without the pressure) of multiple hiccup-style burps after eating...but the test for h.pylori came back negative.

I suggest you pm palmdoc and ask for feedback (assuming palmdoc doesnt see this thread first)

Cheers, m

I searched h.pylori in wikipedia but found no references to "burping", "excessive gas" or "bloating". Could it be something else?

He doesn't experience any pain or heartburn.

There could be any number of reasons. It is definitely due to excessive gas which is usually caused by excessive acid in the stomach. If bloating is persistent, check the gall bladder. It could be filled with stones. I had these problems (bloating and burping) for a long time until it was too late to save the gall bladder. I had it removed and the problems stopped.

How many years you had the problem?

How does gall stones cause excessive acids?

It is hard to pin point the starting date as it progressed slowly. Probably acute for the last 2 years and many discomfort nights for 3 years. The gall bladder releases bile into the stomach when it is needed. I guess when there are sufficient stones, the bile release is expedited causing excessive acid. A medical person will explain further. All I know is that, these are similar symptoms of a gall bladder problem. Perhaps it could be other problem so a medical check up may be helpful.

BTW, I had complaint to my GP a few times and every time he dismissed it as indigestion, lack of exercise and fluid. Insists on an ultra sound check of your bladder to be safe.

Maybe acid reflux. Try Gaviscon, if it works tell the doctor as i dont think this is a long term solution.

Maybe candida, try extra fibre (i developed a huge bloated stomach, a lot more fruit in my diet worked for me).

Above all, ask the doctor.

It is done under GA using keyhole method. That means, you sleep through it so no pain and get to discharge the next day. I paid about RM7000.00 to SJMC but it was covered under my medical insurance. If you do not have medical insurance, they may charge cheaper. Alternative go to Sentosa Medical Center. They are much cheaper than SJMC or Sunway.

I am well known for having 'wind' problems all the time. Usually it happens when i don't eat regularly. Sometimes i don't eat lunch and sometimes i don't eat breakfast, so my stomach works on nothing and creates all that gas, bloats up and causes me to hv a migraine even. I'd burp non stop every few minutes for at least an hour after the time i do eat something. It's terrible uncomfortable. I didnt realize that was the cause of some of my migraines till my chiropractor told me that. I stock up on Cuplaton (prescribed by my doctor), usually brought at Caring Pharmacy. I can't get cuplaton here so i buy loads from Msia and they go everywhere with me. They're the size of lizard eggs, so they aren't hard for me to swallow :D

Actually i am suffering from this right now coz i didnt eat breakfast and lunch, then had a big pre-xmas dinner. Was so busy cleaning and baking today, and a bit stressed out with the never ending dinners and lunches lined up for the next few days. It's time for a cuplaton and Aleve, then off to bed.

Did the doctor say there is a cure for your "wind" problem?
Or do you have to take the pills for life?

Rather than speculate, get a proper examination. Many serious ailmentd are masked by otherwise "common" symptoms. Catch it early to prevent headaches later.

No 'cure' but the only way would be to prevent such problems by eating regularly at decent hours and identify foods that might cause 'wind'.
I basically know my triggers. For me, they are watermelon, cucumber, beans (yummy), raw garlic/onions, and as proven at the moment, sweet potatoes. I had some very yummy baked sweet potato at dinner, now i am sitting at the far end of the hse watching Star Trek on the big tv far behind from the rest of the fml. Needless to say, it is not a pleasant experience for the moment. :D

I don't know about you, but every time I see a doctor for something not minor, things will go wrong.

I don't really blame doctors as homo sapiens have up to 20,000 types of diseases. How can a human doctor know all of them?

The internet is a safer bet to get an accurate diagnosis.

Lady,

Why are you not taking cuplaton now while watching tv?
It's not effective?

Hmm.. very good question, kpc.... Coz i am always thinking to myself that it will go away on its own soon enough, so i wait.... and wait... and trying to not think about it, but usually it doesn't, then medication is my last resort. By then i end up with a headache, so i pop one cuplaton and 2 Aleves. (then space out)

Btw... How've u been kpc? Long time no see eh.

Zing, i tried bananas too esp since we always hv bananas are the staple fruit around my house. Doesnt work. Makes my burps smell of bananas only. hahahhaaha...

If you have a gastric condition, wouldn't taking acidic stuff like these fruit juices aggravate the condition? I had a severe gastric condition (diagnosed via endoscopy - inflamed gastric lining) and I took Slippery Elm for a few months and cured myself of the condition. It does not condition a drug but coats your stomach and allows it to heal. However, not all people can tolerate it. My missus could not take it.

Interestingly, citrus food, even though acidic in their natural state turn into alkaline ash in the stomach after digestion.

Try staying off caffeine. I found out about the caffeine when I tried isolating my food intake to determine the cause of the discomfort at night (constant need to burp but cant however when could relieves the discomfort at the sternum). These days I stay away from teh tarik and coffees, much improvement over the last 1 years. Also, take oats for breakfast too (re: read previous thread about oats).

You could be lactose intolerant also - they also cause burping, BUT best like other forumers suggest, go see a doctor, so to rule out any "hidden" serious ailment ...
