Someone send me an e-mail relating to a young boy in Klang who ate kangkong and died of Gastro-Enteritis . The autopsy found that leeches got into the stem and after it is the stomach it multiply. This vegetable is cooked with the stem. Please make sure you slict the stem and wash thoroughly before you cook kangkong.

Knew about it also.To me i use a gadget bought in Japan ,a stainless steel casing with some rocks to wash together with the vege.Better still soak together with salt ( cheaper to buy those rock sal,.size of a lemon)

How did the leech survive the cooking and the salt?

urban legend lah...how to survive the wok stir & fry style? Pasti mati from all the tossing and if not? the wok-hei will almost certainly masak that fella kaw-kaw...else, the salt/ajinomoto/kichap, chilli + sambal belacan sure would have knocked the wrigggly fella stone dead!

BTW, u know that hiv & hepatitis infected blood can survive in leeches? True 1 u know...

Yang Best makan kangakong blacan latotupai :D

Could be folklore... unless the person is swallowing food without chewing. :D

in LOS, many restaurant, stalls etc serve a platter of fresh vege to go. The platter has various ulam (inclu leaves that taste like mango!), bitter gourd, pods, and kangkong too!

But i have yet to see any creepy crawlies on the leaves...or maybe i am really blur & blind :p

Yang Blur, Buta, BattyBlind, Bug-Biting latotupai :p

if salt can kill it, stomach acid (pH 2 - very acidic) would definitely kill it.

Never believe everything you read in viral emails....or in Forum posts...and at times even the WWW in general.

Here's how you can try to authenticate any stories or news of an event you might read on your email. Just search about it in Google.

Like this:
Search "beware of eating kangkong"

This brings up 2 relevant results:

1. another Forum post [made Oct 4th], where the story was initially quoted as a young girl...

"this young girl was only about 23 - 25 yrs old and she liked to eat the Kang Kong with sotong"

....and then refers to another story that's it's a young boy and it seems that this 'story' stems from a report put out a a Dr. Nor ni Abdullah, who claims to be a Psychiatrist at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah in Klang.

Quoting one sentence from the letter > "Doktor surrender dan menyatakan tidak sanggup mengambil tindakan medical apapun."..... No Doktor will never write like this or use the word 'surrender' in context. [Read the whole letter] Read Here (http://forums.techarp.com/lounge/25579-beware-eating-kangkung-water-spinach.html)

This is the Blog that may have originated the story....post made Sept 25th > Click Here (http://aina-shafrina.blogspot.com/2009/09/kangkungs-secret-beware-all-kankung.html)

These days, you can verify or at least get more info [to decipher if true or not] on just about any local story or event by going online. Try it next time.

AND, BTW....if this be genuinely true....then this is major medical news item that would have been picked up by the News Wires, for it's definitely odd for 'anything' to live in the acidic environment of the stomach. Possibly in the large intestine, but "Leeches"? ....I doubt it, worms maybe :D

Odds are that there may have a child that was taken ill with gastroenteritis after eating 'Sotong Kangkong' and may have even passed on. The sotong may not have been cleaned of its toxins, or there was some residue on the uncleaned kangkong resulting in gastroenteritis.

This reminds me of the story going around about Sugarcane :)
