There is no need to stay in a hotel in Halong Bay. They have hotel boats that comes in a package including food ( simple meal , then along the way they will stop by at some fish farms and attracts you to buy fresh seafoods at fierce price to improve your menu- advice , don't buy eat simple )

we have decided not to stay overnight on the boat (seasick la)

we are booking the hotel in halong bay, via hotel in hanoi. and we are given choice of either 2star or 3star hotel in halong bay.

if 2star hotel is clean and comfortable, we are fine.

any feedback then whether 2star or 3star?

Go for the 3star if you get better view. A good view of Halong Bay from your hotel or room is worth the extra to pay. My 2 bits.

Suggest you check out www.tripadvisor.com - it helps a lot looking for hotels esp the reviews IMHO - good luck
