Hi guys, I'm currently smitten for this SUV which is up for grab at about RM65k or thereabout.
The specs are as follows:-
Year : 2003 registered early 2004
2 litre Diesel/Auto transmission
Leather seats/ori sports rims
Accident free and condition ok
2 air bags/ABS/no power steering
Odo: 100,000 km
This is the first time I'm buying an European or diesel car and would like to get some feedbacks from you guys who owned one especially in terms of known problems with this model, parts availability and maintenance costs. Hopefully, your advice will assist me to decide to commit on this purchase.

a friend has this oil burner...it has been quite ok except that he had some issues with the quality of diesel here and hence had problems with the engine...with the euro2 grade with less sulphur it might be ok...but pls beware of the damage which has been done before...

I had a Freelander diesel TD4 too - 2006 model. It is a workhorse... easy to run around and very torquey. The only thing about the older 2.0 model is that one gets the head knocked getting in and out too quick. Other than that its a good vehicle... can keep forever.... :D
Its an all-time four wheel drive so you feel pretty safe in wet and slippery conditions...
The service on call from Land Rover is really good if you live in Klang Valley.

Hi Sentinel,
Looks like the SUV I'm eyeing is the same engine type (BMW) except that yours is newer and facelifted with body-colour bumper. Are you still keeping this car? I was told this 4x4 is very robust but a certain batch has issues with the tranny. Where do you normally service the car and how often? I was told you need to service every 20,000km instead of the normal 5,000 or 10,000km for petrol cars. Is the maintenance costs very high?
And also, is the seller's asking price fair and current market value?
Sorry for asking so many questions :D

Thanks for your feedbacks. I honestly didn't know that our diesel here is of lousy quality. No wonder all diesel-powered engines are so noisy and smelly. :D

I had a 2001 model before too when I was in Brunei... I used it for daily use and to Miri and Limbang and every bumpy potholed roads you can imagine... its a very hardy vehicle.
Both units I owned are similiar except my first unit was 3-door and manual which I find the gearstick a wee bit too short to reach.
The price of a Freelander is not indicative as it is hardly traded. I suggest you check the vehicle with Land Rover which is in PJ. Try and bargain a bit.
No I don't have mine anymore coz my niece came back from overseas and she 'borrowed' my car when she got her first job... she has since kept quiet.
I am actually considering another unit which is the new 2.2 TD5 one but not likely in the next few months.

Thanks for your feedbacks. You're right in saying Land Rover Malaysia (Auto Connexions) in PJ has good after sales service. I've called their SC and the manager was very kind and took the time to tell me the history of the said car and future preventive maintenance costs to be involved. The maintenance cost is indeed high (I should say it is higher than the Toyota Camry 2.4)
The asking price for the car is attractive but after considering the additional expenses to put in for a new set of tyres, brake pads+discs, hoses and major service consumables, I reckon the total cost should be above RM70k+ With this price I'm tempted to go for the post 2004 face-lift model but a well-maintained pre-owned is hard to come by.
BTW, the new Freelander 2 is out of my reach. It's an eye-popping RM275,000!!

You're a few months late... a friend sold his 2007 model (last unit of the TD4) for 100K last August.

Sayang lah. That's a damn good 4x4 and pretty new too. Sadly so few of the last batch are on the road. I was told most owners of the Freelander TD4 are happy with theirs and are for keepsake.
Thanks for sharing anyway.

BMW Malaysia has been very brave and launched a range of diesel models from the 3 series to the 7 series...quite a bold move when we only have euro 2 standards..they seem confident of the quality of the diesel here..
actually these diesel models are very nice to drive..bit of vibration compared to the silky smooth 6 cylinder in line petrol version...very very good torque and power..cannot hear the clatter inside but can hear the diesel engine noise outside the car..

I was pleasantly surprised over the smoothness and power when I test drove the TD4. I don't hear the engine noise inside the cabin except the humming sound from the worn tyres. You're right in saying earlier the inferior quality of our diesel here as this car has undergo a fuel pump change at 80,000km due to heavy clogging.
