i enjoy listening to live bands, those that are able to belt out English contemporary songs, from 80s to current ones.

most of the 5 star hotels' bands are just so-so. some are quite disappointing.

anyone has a good place to recommend? preferably non smokey?

Aiyah.............. must have current hits ah?
If you are partial to slightly older songs, then you might give Ol' Skool along Jalan Gasing a try on Thursday nights.......... bit smoky though........ and the place is a bit old school....... ie. dark and dingy......... but good atmosphere.
Country Barn in USJ 11 on Tuesday nights is pretty good with Sherman Tan and his buddies playing......... not so smoky

There's a gang of ex-Strollers performing at a joint in USJ 1. I think some of you may know about it. The Strollers were a local group, cut an album or two in the 70's.

LA VENUE CAFE
42, Jalan USJ 1/1C, SUBANG JAYA
(After Giant/Mydin, go straight about
500 Meters -Shop Lots on your left)

Yes, they are pretty good live. Didn't know they played at La Venue though. Only knew about the Ol' Skool and Hard Rock gigs. If you like live music, I would highly recommend giving them a listen.........

The Lone Pine, next to Golden Sands Resort, has a live band - not only the songs are oldies but the band members are too. :D

Just curious . Is there any such place where they have strict no smoking rules .?

I enjoy live band music too but the cigarette smoke really put me and my wife off. Ya, would be interesting to know if there are really such places where smoking is banned. Yes, I remember the Strollers when I was young. Didn't realise they are still singing !

I know one of them personally. You can find him at 2nd floor Amcorp Mall on Sundays selling vinyl LP's. I reckon they sing not just for the money. So it may be worth your while?..for local entertainment. Live entertainment is just so different from listening to one's hifi or some emulated channel.

hope that someone will set up a joint where it is smoke free. i wonder why entertainment must always go hand in hand with cigarettes...

i very much enjoy live bands, but the smoke really put me off.

at one time, hard rock cafe, had excellent band. but the smoke there was so unbearable, had to leave after 45 minutes.

this is where singapore is good. most places are smoke free...

Sorry man, you're giving folks here a hard time to suggest something precisely to your liking. You know this land lah.. got but may be little hard to find. We all exist here with degrees of compromise and tolerance.
Hmmmm.. perhaps for the right price, they'd surely play for you one night at your home?. For the price, nothing's really impossible. I'm sure they'd oblige.

I think Sunway Resort Hotel and Subang Sheraton lobby are smoke free but I am not sure about the quanlity of the live bands. Not true, Subang Sheraton got smoking corners and the smoke definitely floats across the lounge. Anyway, not good place for family hang-out coz many scantily clad China dolls sipping their cocktails in the lounge.

Yeah...these guys are good and they do play a wide range of hits, even recent ones. Have been following their gigs for a while now. As mentioned in a comment earlier which I agree with....I think they play for the love of music more than for the money. You can tell from they way they seem so involved in what they do. On top of that...most of them are in their 50's and real cool chaps.

Besides the Blog....they have a website too.

Yes, I'd prefer to artists who sing with passion and for the love of the music, not some juveniles yelling their tongues out thinking they'd become a hit sensation or household name in 12 months time.

I think I will head to LA VENUE CAFE tonight to watch the Strollers2. Have never seen them before in person. Hopefully, can tahan the smoke. If not, will just stay for a while. I really pity the people working in such places.

many years ago, i really enjoyed the live band at subway, amcorp mall. the band from phillippines was really2 good...

Was at the LA VENUE CAFE last night with some friends to watch The Strollers2. I must say we really enjoyed their music. Thanks to BSLee for the his information about this band. For those of you who enjoy music of the 70s and 80s, I am quite sure you will enjoy their performance. Not as smoky as I thought it would be. Maybe not that many smokers last night.

There's a pub inside Sunway Club. I forgot what it's called but they have a good local band there. I went there once and enjoyed the songs played by the band there. Mostly classic rock songs from bands like Queens, Lynard Skynard, etc.

How about Cheers? Frankie Tan belts out plenty of good oldies plus middle of the road "newbies" every Monday & Wednesday nite from about 8 to 11 pm. It's situated in the little neighbourhood of Jalan Batai, Damansara Heights. Address 8-11 Jln Batai. It's in a quiet area and perfect to chill out. Not the typical rowdy joint packed with under-aged teenagers. More of a hang-out joint for young to middle-aged professionals to gather and have a quiet meal. Offering food ranging from Western to Asian cuisine.

Frankie came out one of the top few winners during those years of Bakat TV during the time of Brian Jeremiah etc. He is a very nice bloke and normally obliges song requests. And if you do visit him, please tell him I pointed you there. Btw, just in case some of you are not aware, Frank is paraplegic.

Pat, have you heard of Frankie Chia of Bakat TV fame from JB as well, well known for singing songs of Engelbert Humperdinck?

"Woman in my life,
How long must you pretend..."

Even though I'm a non-smoker, jazz and blues is just not the same without those thick fumes....

In Europe it's come to such an extremity that you're not even allowed to smoke in cigar bars.... ;-)....

I think it's quite a bit over the top.

Having common public places such as shopping malls and daily restaurants smoke-free is one thing, but really having smoke prohibition in music clubs is just plain silly...

When I was in St Louis I was told the best jazz & blues places were on the east of the Mississippin river. I was also told not to go because it is dangerous. But heck, all the way to St. Louis and not visiting their famous jazz & blues bars? Dangerous?

I really enjoyed the 2 nites in the jazz joints, tobacco smoke and cheap cigars included.... plus of course a few swigs of Jack Daniels!

Back in mid-90s, at The Ship in Damansara Utama upstairs on weekends, there used to be a very good and telented Filipino band The Acropolis, a 10-member band. They use to play to full house... full of people and full of smoke.... is the band still playing?

I've been there too! I remember them. For political/racial reasons, it's very difficult for pinoy bands to play in KL. I think it's about 10 years ago they imposed tough workpermit restrictions on foreign musicians, effectively banning them.

Walking distance was the 'Rasta' club in the next building! Artstream and Bala used to play there....

Generally, I think most of the good bands are gone. KL is dead. The syndicates have forced nightlife to central KL. Bangsar, which was the only clean, syndicate-free place before, is struggling and losing it.

Despite the bombs, Jakarta is the happening place now. The nightlife is excellent. The quality of the local music scene is even comparable to London.

i understand that there are 2 groups of people - those who enjoy a smoke and those who enjoy clean air.

i belong to the latter group (although the haze doesnt help at all). so where do we go to when we want to enjoy music in clubs? all the clubs are smokey...

Ha..ha ... arent we all!! Everyone is getting older every day!! So..it's ok..all part of growing up!! Haha!!

Wonder what Frankie is doing these days! Wow...those good old days! Brian Jeremiah is still in Penang and I have lost touch with him. David Thiagarajah of Alleycats is now without Logan. Wonder how they are doing without Logan. Anyone knows if they are performing in town? Gotta keep in touch with David. And sadly, Billy Chang of the Strollers is no longer with us. I heard he passed away! Should have kept in touch with him....sadly!! I was even in Outward Bound School with Billy! We had great fun!!
