This question is posed to some of our educators here in the USJ forum:

Is it possible to register and take the SPM English 1119 as a single paper? I already have my SPM which was taken in 1999 with a Grade 1 but I failed to take my 1119 back then.

If you intend to do a local degree, why don't you take the MUET?

Otherwise you can go to the Exams Board at Shah Alam to enquire?

I just need an internationally recognised English qualification that I can fire and forget (ie. not renew every couple of years like TOEFL).

I always thought that the English paper is marked twice once for SPM and again for GCE O level automatically even as far back as late 70s.

I always thought that the English paper is marked twice once for SPM and again for GCE O level automatically even as far back as late 70s.That's true but prior to the incorporation of the 1119 examination into the SPM in the mid 90s, it was the GCE O-Levels English for Communications (1322) paper which is not considered as equivalent to the GCE O Levels / IGCSE English Language paper. The GCE O-Levels English Language (1119) paper was usually taken as an optional extra by students then.

Comparing the test fee of RM 550 for IELTS and RM 20.50 (+ RM 20 registration) for SPM / GCE O-Levels English 1119, somehow the latter looks more appealing. :P

I always thought that the English paper is marked twice once for SPM and again for GCE O level automatically even as far back as late 70s.

When I took my SPM in the mid 80's, the 1119 English exam was taken separately and was optional to students. Because about 75% of my class signed-up for the exams, our english teacher decided that twice a week, instead of the normal english lessons, she would teach the whole class the 'O' level syllabus.

Usually, we need to watch out for any notices in the NST for the details when you can register for the exams plus where to get the registration forms.
I only know about the SPM(U) as I need to improve my score.
Now that you brought up the English 1119 subject, I may want to try this too!~ :)

Hahaha .. I thought so too. Nonetheless, since they didn't say no, I would venture to make some conclusions based on the various resources that I've come across to date.

The SPM Open Certification basically allows Malaysians to take examinations in single subjects for SPM, provided:

The candidate has previously taken Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) / Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (Vokasional) (SPM(V)) / Sijil Pelajaran Vokasional Malaysia (SPVM) / Malaysian Certificate of Education (MCE) / School Certificate (SC) / Federation of Malaya Certificate (FMC)
Aged 19 and above on January 1 of the year of the examination
Previously obtained a pass in Bahasa Malaysia / Bahasa Melayu on the SPM / SPM(V) / SPVM / MCE level

If a pass was not previously obtained in BM, then the candidate will have to take a minimum of 6 subject papers (BM, Mathematics, English, Islamic Studies / Moral Studies, History, Science) before given the option to take the other electives. A list of SPM electives can be found here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sijil_Pelajaran_Malaysia).

It was already there .... you just needed to know how to search the website!~
The "search" space is at the top left corner ... just type in english 1119 and, viola, all related items will be listed!~

So .... I am not sure if you still have time to register for the Nov 2009 exams ... anyway, next year isn't too far away!~

Khap!~
