The vaccine is for human papilloma virus (HPV) which is one of the predisposing factors for cervix cancer. There is no vaccine for cancer (yet)

There are no vaccine for cancer. Cancer is not a virus or bacteria that is external to your body and which our immune system can attack.

The best way to avoid cancer is to eat healthy. More vege + fruits, no or less meat (preferably 100% vege). No preservatives etc.

Wht Regines is talking about is the GARDASIL HPV vaccination .. http://www.cmc-mvmc.com.au/gardasil/ . This vaccine is relatively new and is a life saving for many females of the younger generation. I'm very surprised the Malaysian govt has provided so little information regarding this important piece of advice to the young adults.

This vaccination is recommendated for female only between 16 and 26 and preferably before one is sexually active. That is why all the teenage kids in our secondary schools are on a mass vaccination program for free before they get sextually active. The vaccine is given over 3 doses.
This GARDASIL vaccine is a prevention and NOT a cure.

Cancer is not one disease. Different cancers are different diseases with different causes.

Some viruses are implicated in the causation of some cancers, and these are known as Oncoviruses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oncovirus). The HPV (human papilloma virus) vaccine protects against four HPV types, which together cause 70% of cervical cancers.

The most successful anti-viral anti-cancer vaccine to date is your humble Hepatitis B vaccine. This has resulted in a drop in the incidence of primary liver cancer (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0DED/is_6_20/ai_59120049/) (though not complete eradication since there are other factors which cause liver cirrhosis and liver cancer)
For the successful uptake of a vaccine in communities, the cost should be affordable and in the Hepatitis B story, universal vaccination of babies was possible once the cost dropped significantly. While HPV vaccines are still expensive, the cost will drop eventually. While it is still expensive, some would call the HPV vaccine a contentious one (http://www.malaysiaoncology.org/article.php?aid=277&PHPSESSID=fdc).
I hope to see an EBV vaccine developed so that in the future we can kiss some lymphomas and NPC goodbye (http://www.crc-vt.qimr.edu.au/media/ebv.html).

Posting some links in the MMR FYI, some old news going back 3 years.

So lemme get this straight:

1. 70% of Cervical cancers are caused by HPV.
2. This vaccine is for HPV - a sexually transmitted disease (STD).
3. STDs spread by sex with an infected partner.
