View Full Version : when & where do you buy books?

when
my philosophy is to never buy books at retail price if possible, so i usually stock up when there's a warehouse sale. :)
where
wherever the warehouse sales are, usually the nearby ones. there are only so many sales you can go to and they mostly carry the same titles anyway. mph, times, pay less books are the warehouse sales i usually go to. when i'm at amcorp mall i'll pay a visit at bookxcess and when at atria i'll drop by the big bookshop.
where do you go to get your reading fix? is there a particularly place you buy books from more often?

It really depends on the books that you want to purchase. Half the books I need can never be found at warehouse sales. Ie. Technical books (by the time they make it to a warehouse sale, it is no longer needed :D ), a number of novels.
Also, warehouse sales tend to throw at you a lot of hard-covered version books at paperpack prices. I'm the kind who just dislikes carrying around a book that's overweight. :p

that's true. must cost a bomb buying technical books then!
yeah i don't buy hardback novels unless i can't get it elsewhere, but it's not usually a problem i encounter when buying books.
when i buy at warehouse sales it's more to try out new books rather than finding a title i've been meaning to buy. a bit cheaper on the pocket if it turns out to be a lousy read. :D

Tks....in the middle of thinking where to get preschool story books?
I tried Pay Less at 3K twice, but the children books are really in such bad condition...some scribbled, some missing cover, some missing pages...!
For adult books eg novels and DIY home kinda thing still good deal.

franky: just came back from that mph warehouse sale. being quite a seasoned book bargain hunter (if i do say so myself :p ) i found the books expensive. some books were pretty cheap, like the twilight series by stephenie meyer, but overall it is not value for money. some books i saw there i found to be cheaper elsewhere.
but it was terribly crowded despite it being on a saturday morning!

I totally agree. I found that it was not exactly promotion price, I ended up leaving without purchasing a single book. I went to Popular's at Summit USJ, here however, many great deals were available. I bought up to RM200+. Most of which were 90% discounted. weeee :D

Well, as for me, I have been purchasing mags and books from "Re-issue" & Book Xcess in Amcorp mall. Averagely, u pay 1/2~1/4 of the market price. Of course, the selection is limited comparing to MPH or Borders, but if u are fortunate enough u may find the current issues on SALE.
I must thank them for allowing my child to have a great collection of books without burning a hole in my pocket... go take a look and you'll be blessed.
Folks, if I hope for our gar-ment to help reducing the "cost of reading", I'm a hopeless guy.
Latuk, macam mana nak jadi developed nation ni? Buku pun tak mampu nak beli.....

Where's this Re-Issue place? Never heard of it...do they sell mags only, or do they sell books too?

Go to a Popular Sale next time.....I visited the sale at Submit Concourse on Saturday and it was great. I joined as a member on the spot (RM12 fee/yearly) and got further discounts...
Got my son a lot of Hardcover Books eg Nursery Rhymes, Bedtime Stories, Kindy Science, Jigsaw Puzzle Book, Colouring and Fun Activities Book....most of it at a 50% - 90% discount. Many good quality Hardcover ones are at 70% esp those from Ladybird...Great buy!
