The Human Genome Project.. (So what is it exactly..?)

The famous Human Genome Project - something that most of us have somehow heard before, but less likely to know about in terms of details.
So what is the Human Genome Project (HGP for short)..?

Well of course, I'm here isn't the ultimate expert when it comes to the field of genetics. But I'm sure some research, plus a little bit of cut and paste sure does the magic.

The Human Genome Project (HGP) is an international 13-year effort formally begun in October 1990. The project was planned to last 15 years, but rapid technological advances accelerated the completion to 2003. Project goals were to determine the complete sequence of the 3 billion DNA subunits (bases), identify all human genes, and make them accessible for further biological study. As part of the HGP, parallel sequencing was done for selected model organisms such as the bacterium E. coli to help develop the technology and interpret human gene function.
It has been acclaimed in a Common Declaration of the heads of state of the 6 countries which participated in the project (Germany, China, the US, France, Japan, Great Britain).

The project began in 1990 initially headed by James D. Watson. A working draft of the genome was released in 2000 and a complete one in 2003, with further analysis still being published.

If you're asking about any main points to remember about the HGP, then i will say it'll be these:-
- HGP, a project to study the human gene sequence
- A joint effort of 6 countries.. (US, Britain, Germany, France, Japan and China)
- Completion of draft was announced on 26 June 2000

Wala! And the magic is done..
