Cough with phlegm is usually caused by secretions in the nasal (nose) cavity that drips down the throat which activates the gag reflex. This causes the cough which is a natural attempt at removing the fluids that tickle the throat. If you go to your doctor, he/she may prescribe you expectorants or even anti-histamine medications that help to reduce the over production of fluids in the nasal passages. It need not be cough mixtures.
Final word - do not self-medicate, get medical prescriptions. Most coughs are simple bodily reactions to over production of phlegm but there are also coughs that indicate other conditions - let the medical professionals check it out.

First how long have you been coughing?? As Chang said, better go visit the Doc! But if you wish to try some remedy you can go buy a bottle of honey and some lime (the ones used to make limau ice). Scoop 1-2 big table spoon of honey and put it in a small cup, then squeeze the lime (1-2) until the sour blend with the sweet honey and mix well. Remember to take out the seeds!
Do not add water...take a tablespoon a time 2-3 hourly...letting it sips slowly down the throat....great especially for those who lost their voice! :D
If the cough is bad for now do please visit the Doc!!

try eat sengkuang ( turnip) :)
this is natural... dont do any harm if it does not work.
Add equal amounts of ginger juice (old ginger, preferably) and honey to a small glass of quite warm water. Mix and sip slowly.
Note: I usually use 1 Chinese soup spoonful. Water temperature must not be too hot, i.e. boiling water should be cooled for about 7-10 mins before using.
Hope this helps.

When you are sick...that means your body is weak.
Try essence of chicken for 3 days, boost with 1000mg Vit C and multivits with some cough medicine. :)

What happened to pottle?
He/she hadn't come onto the Forum again after the post on this thread.
I'm wondering if the cough is smoking related ....
Generally, smokers have this problem because the smoking habit kills the ciliary cells (http://www.naturalhealthschool.com/cilia_smoking.html) lining the throat and air-way leading to the lungs. These cells perform a basic function of moving foreign particles and phlegm out of the lung. Once the ciliary cells die, the smoker will constantly cough as his body tries to expel the phlegm and dust particles out of the lungs.
If you are a smoker ... STOP smoking !

haha...sorry for my long absence... my cough has recovered a lot...but still got a little more when it comes to night time...
Initially, my cough was almost killing me esp at night. so hard to sleep as I cough my lungs out for hours before I sleep. So I end up taking antibiotics which did helped a little.
And I came accross to this wonderful cough curing tip which is starfruit boiled drink, so gonna share this recipe with you all..
you just need to chopped 2-3 starfruit in star shape and boil in 3 bowls of water until it is left with 2 bowls. let it cool a bit and drink it... drink once daily.. Do it for 3-4 days continuously on top of lots of 'loh hon koh' and plain water... my cough recovered a lot after that.
not forgetting good rest and early sleep and don't expose yourself to breeze and air-con..
* I'm a non-smoker btw... hehehe.. :)

If you cough at night - it could be there are something you may be allergic to in your bedroom - such as dust mites or perhaps the air-conditioner needs to be cleaned. There could be a lot of allergens that make one cough because the allergy make you produce a lot of secretions in your nasal passages.
